Full bodied, complex, concentrated, full lingering tannins predominate the dense, black and blue berry fruits with hints of liquorice, plum and spice and spicy oak. https://unwindwine.blogspot.com/2023/05/pour-boys-winers-diners-23-cityscape.html (288 views) | | Tasted by wconnolly on 5/26/2023 & rated 95 points: My last bottle of this premium 2008 Shiraz and it just gets better. Blackberry, plum cassis, pepper and steely granite. Layered and full bodied. My favorite of an 18 bottle selection for our quarterly wine group dinner. Nose : Clean, Medium(+) aroma intensity of blackcurrant, black pepper, jamminess, vanila, blackberry, meaty, gamey, earth, cedar and leather. Developing. Palate : Dry, medium(+) acid, medium alcohol, medium(+) body, medium tannin, pronounced flavour intesity of blackcurrant, black pepper, jamminess, vanila, blackberry, meaty, gamey, earth, cedar and leather with a long finish. Wine is of outstanding quality. Can drink now but suitable for further ageing. Still spectacular but beginning to show its age. This has become a mature Shiraz, lacking the steely, granite notes from its younger days. Berry and a bit of smoke on the nose. If anything, some of the roughness of the spice has diminished ( but not by much), to be augmented by sweet, blackberry and raspberry fruit. Spectacular! This wine is medium-bodied at best with an easy drinking smoothness and relatively balanced considering its 14.5% alcohol content. On the first day, the wine was drinking beautifully. The palate was predominately fruit-driven with notes of boiled meat, violets, a certain earthy component and oak. However, by the second day this wine seemed to have fallen apart. I was surprised by the hollowness especially towards the middle palate and the overall lack of freshness of this wine. This tells me that this does not have the stuff to last even for the mid-term. Overall, I was rather disappointed and was expecting more (much more) from an old vine shiraz of this caliber and price-range. There are plenty of mid-range Barossa shiraz out there can out perform this wine for the fraction of the price. Layered and complex with spice, granite, minerals on the palate with a touch of softness not usually expected in a Shiraz. Drinking beautifully now but will last for years. Went nicely with barbecued ribs, baked potato and haricot vert with friends Rick and Linda. We met winemaker and proprietor John Grebs at Wine Spectators Grand Tour about 3 years ago where he introduced us to this 100 year old vine product. Our group immediately got with his distributor an retailer and bought every bottle brought into our city. Maybe the best Shiraz I have had. This is softening somewhat and I will not hold remaining bottles for more than another 3 years. Drinking exceptionally well. Full of fruit as expected but rounder and better balanced than most Aussie Shiraz. Does not express the tangy almost medicinal taste associated with the better Shiraz. (3043 views) |
