Tasted by Winiac on 11/25/2023 & rated 94 points: Solid structure with good acidity and focus of flavors. Was best after one hour of decanting. (636 views)
Tasted by hprphf on 11/18/2023 & rated 90 points: Good aromatics but short. 90 (681 views)
Tasted by mxpbuy on 8/19/2023 & rated 91 points: After an hour of air or so, the wine opened. This wine is lighter on its feet than most 2003s are and is why this wine still has at least another 5 to7 years left in it. Black fruits, tobacco, cedar, dried herbs. A very nice and well made wine that tasted blind would be hard to pick as an '03. (840 views)
Tasted by remyworldpeace on 7/16/2023 & rated 95 points: Elegant red fruits. Graphite, pencil lead. Long finish, precise structure and good complexity.

Tasted blind. I confess that I thought this was a Pauillac (although don't feel too bad as an MW around the table concurred). (1038 views)
Tasted by Harley1199 on 6/16/2023: New Opportunities by the Sea; 6/7/2023-6/30/2023 (Alicante - España): First of four. As it is traditional at my home, bottle opened sixteen hours in advance having a slow breath. Bottle has been laying down in my cellar for fifteen years. In spite that plastic envolving its capsule, cork showed moldy and little soaked (pictured). First sniff was pretty reduced smelling something in between drain pipe and horse manure. After this slow, gentle aeration all have changed to cedar, to a punch of macerated red and black berries, to a strawberry bunch, certainly veggie yet mineral too. Effectively masculine yet been a Margaux. On the palate showed a diluted texture but tasty and long at the same time. Maybe a little tired acidity, tamed tannins at an unbalanced alcoholic, smoky, dry finish. That's all. Heat records only in your mind. Prices rocking to high. Nothing spectacular but quite effective. No rush.

(1251 views)
Tasted by Goldstone on 5/11/2023 & rated 90 points: 'Welcome back Neal' Dinner (Giando, 5 Star Street, Wan Chai, Hong Kong): Splash decanted. Deep totally opaque red/black colour slightly lightening at the meniscus. Understated but velvety nose of fermented raspberries. Palate is wonderfully velvety, mellow and followed with a super mounting resonance and reverberance. It rose up to a silence-creating element but soured somewhat with extended time in the glass and ended up disappointing. Drank in parallel with the Pontet Canet 2003, which is a league higher.  Tasted by redknife on 7/26/2022: Been 6 months
Dinner at home with Allan and Phill E.
No tasting notes but remember went well with grilled ribeyes (1096 views)
Tasted by Peech on 1/3/2022 & rated 90 points: double-decanted an hour before drinking. More woodsy and fragrant on the nose, definitely more tannic and grippy on the palate. Two hours after opening this was still more concentrated. (1910 views)
Tasted by Tao on 8/22/2021 & rated 91 points: Dense, young and tight, so dark in colour! You can feel the heat of the vintage! A touch tannic on the palate, needs quite a bit of time! (2525 views)
Tasted by Peech on 3/5/2021 & rated 86 points: decanted 1 hour afer opening and served 30 minutes after decanting. Very muted, with some smoke in the nose. Finally opened up a little more after an hour in decanter, showing more fruit. Pretty disappointing. (1589 views)
Tasted by redknife on 11/28/2020 & rated 93 points: Weekend after Thanksgiving with Bella’s parents at home. Decanted for about two hrs. Wine Evolved throughout the night beginning to show a bit of tertiary aromas
Beautiful tobacco and coffee aromas
Went great with grilled ribeyes
No rush to drink (3005 views)
Tasted by S-C-S on 1/15/2020 & rated 93 points: Decant for 2 hours (3166 views)
Tasted by Brian of Mull on 11/5/2019 & rated 91 points: Solid and elegant. Plums and red fruits. Smooth. Good wine (3232 views)
 Tasted by StasMedvedev.lv on 10/11/2019 & rated 93 points: 🏅 Rating 93+/100 (4,35⭐)

Beautiful wine with intense aromas. Pyrazines of bell pepper of Cabernet Sauvignon, cola. Mineral even saline on the palate. Long lasting aftertaste.

This 2nd wine of the legendary Chateau Margaux is superb! I always hunt for a lesser vintages because to my experience the gap between the Grand Vin and the 2nd label is minimal in such vintages. Probably due to the fact that in difficult years some of the Grand Vin grapes are declassified and go to 2nd wine blend.
2003 is a very difficult vintage in Bordeaux as in many other wine regions in Europe.
But this one is absolutely gorgeous! (2763 views)
Tasted by Xavier Auerbach on 6/21/2019 & rated 91 points: Summer Solstice Dinner (Jan-Dirk Taams' residence, Groot-Ammers, Netherlands): Tasted blind. Decanted. Typical Margaux elegance is compromised slightly by a touch of warmth. Exactly what you’d expect of Pavillon Rouge in a vintage like 2003. (3183 views)
Tasted by mpricher on 12/28/2018 & rated 90 points: Same as prior TN’s. I do think this is tasting better after it breathes a bit. Lots more fruit and secodary notes. Fleshy Merlot base. Went well with roasted meats. (2889 views)
Tasted by tzelmer on 7/14/2018 & rated 92 points: Red berries, plum, slightly smoky nose. Red fruit, pencil lead. Gravel, Rose water, baking spice in the finish. Ample silky tannin, still very fruity. The secondary elements are just beginning to evolve. Very good Margaux. (3115 views)
Tasted by cab blends on 5/11/2018 & rated 91 points: AHA Hearts Delight Vintners Dinner with Chef Daniel Boulud (Mellon Auditorium - DC): With some airtime, a beautiful light tobacco nose evolved. (3261 views)
Tasted by Millennial Drinkers on 5/11/2018 & rated 90 points: Deep to medium garnet red. A little stinky on the nose, with some spices and red berries. Medium tannins (6.5/10) and medium plus to full bodied. Power comes through on the palate with cherries, currants and earthy. Medium plus to long and well integrated. Drink till 2022. (3036 views)
Tasted by RGCM Gananda on 6/18/2017 & rated 92 points: Classic Margaux nose of raspberry and mineral notes, but perhaps slightly soft and not as bright. Prior bottle was almost three years ago (July 2014) and this bottle showed a bit better. Full bodied (13% ABV), but more balanced than previously, after being open about two and a half hours ahead of time. Soft and balanced red cherry and raspberry upfront with enough brightness to be interesting, but with enough depth to allow it to feel open and expressive. Mid-body has that wonderfully silky elegance to it that allows the wine to show off fruit and structure to the best effect. Clean transition to the finish where it shows earth notes, vanilla, integrated spices and graphite to go with fine grained tannins. Fells like this wine could continue to improve slightly over the next few years and show well for a few more beyond that. (3941 views)
Tasted by amateur62 on 5/5/2017 & rated 91 points: On the nose quite heavy with mainly tertiary notes. On the palate smooth, mouth filling and good length but rather low acidity. Drink now or during the next two or three years. (3607 views)
Tasted by Sir-Harrie on 2/5/2017 & rated 91 points: Dunkelrote klare Farbe, filigran im Glas. Typische Noten von schwarzen Früchten, leichtes Röstaroma, schön balanciert, Tannine wunderbar eingebunden? (3324 views)
Tasted by mpricher on 10/22/2016 & rated 90 points: Was a good first experience. Was Tart and Tanic upon first open. Double decanted for and hour. Still wasn't giving up much. After 2-3 HR this really started to open and shine. Lots of cherry with some mellow earthy notes. Almost a milky quality on the palate. (3743 views)
Tasted by TimothyJames on 10/16/2016: With Colonel Timothy Adams (3742 views)
Tasted by the player on 10/12/2016 & rated 92 points: Best bottle of this vintage so far. The tannins are beginning to resolve with about 3 hours in the decanter. Bright ruby red, perfumed cassis nose with cedar and tobacco. On the palate the fruit stands out with its ripeness and purity, good acidity and decent though not flabbergasting depth and a good finish. Not bad at all. (2708 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman

Médoc

VdB

The eight precisely defined appellations of the whole of the Médoc (from Blanquefort Brook to the north of the Bordeaux built-up area, almost to the Pointe de Grave) may claim the Médoc appellation. But there is also a specific territory in the north of the peninsula which produces exclusively wines with this appellation. In the great majority, the Médocs come from the north of the peninsula. The great individuality of this region is that the number of vines has increased more recently here than elsewhere, apart from a few isolated spots where vines have grown for many years. Today, the size of the small estate has brought about the development of a powerful co-operative movement. Four co-operatives out of five belong to the group called Unimédoc which ensures aging, bottling and marketing a large proportion of their wines.

Margaux

Read more about Margaux and its wines As with a large part of the Bordeaux vineyards, vines first appeared in Margaux during the Gallo-Roman period.
In 1705 a text mentions Château Margaux . But we have to wait for the end of the eighteenth century and the coming of the earliest techniques in aging for the concept of wines of high quality to develop. The confirmation of this was the famous 1855 classification which recognized 21 Crus Classés in the Margaux appellation. One hundred years later, the Viticultural Federation and the Margaux appellation of controlled origin were born. The appellation, which stretches out over five communes, is actually unique in the Médoc in that it is the only one to contain all the range of wines, as rich as they are vast, from First Great Cru Classé to the Fifths, not forgetting its famous Crus Bourgeois and its Crus Artisans.

In Margaux there is a predominance of Garonne gravel on a central plateau of about 4 miles in length and one and a quarter wide. To the east-south-east, it overlooks the low lying land by the estuary. Its east side is marked by gentle, dry valleys and a succession of ridges. The layer of gravel in Margaux was spread out by a former Garonne in the early Quaternary. Rather large in size, it is mingled with shingle of average dimension and represents the finest ensemble of Günz gravel in the Haut-Médoc. It is on this ancient layer on a Tertiary terrace of limestone or clayey marl that the best Médoc crus lie. All the conditions for successful wine are present : a large amount of gravel and pebbles, poor soil which cannot retain water and deep rooted vines.

It is customary to say that Margaux wines are the "most feminine" in the Médoc, thus stressing their delicacy, suppleness and their fruity, elegant aromas. This does not affect their great propensity for aging; just the opposite, for the relatively thin terroir imparts tannins which give them long life. The other characteristic of these wines which combine an elegant vitality, subtlety and consistency, is their diversity and personality. Over and above the flavour which is their "common denominator", they present an exceptional palette of bouquets, fruity flavours which show up differently from one château to another.

Production conditions (Decree dated August 10 1954)
In order to have the right to the Margaux appellation of controlled origin, red wines must:

- come from the commune of Margaux, Cantenac, Soussans, Arsac and Labarde, "excluding the land which by the nature of its soil or because of its situation, is unfit to produce wine of this appellation".
- satisfy precise production conditions: grape-varieties (Cabernet-Sauvignon, Cabernet-Franc, Carmenère, Merlot Noir, Petit Verdot, Cot or Malbec), minimum of sugar (178 grammes - 6.27 oz. - per litre of must) degree (an acquired 10°5) base yield (45 hectolitres per hectare).

Vins de Bordeaux:
Grape Varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Petit Verdot, Merlot
Soil: Gravel and silt plateau on a layer of limestone or silt on clay
Surface Area: 1,530 ha
