Community Tasting Notes (average 89.1 pts. and median of 89 pts. in 44 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Gece on 1/29/2021: Still austere with good fruit to it. Age isn't very obvious but in the other hand nothing you strictly need waiting for, it's quite good at it is. (1765 views)
Tasted by Julian Marshall on 11/22/2019 & rated 87 points: Good, but has not lived up to the promise it showed a few years ago - slightly bitter and the fruit has not developed sufficiently. (2433 views)
Tasted by Gece on 7/27/2018: Blackberries and cacao powder. Fairly austere but with an accessible side to it. Meat wine, for sure. (3051 views)
Tasted by pommard1969 on 2/1/2017 & rated 92 points: sehr lecker. immer noch viel tannin, aber auch schöne frucht. habe noch 5 flaschen, habe es aber nicht eilig. (4599 views)
Tasted by bons vinhos on 8/15/2016 & rated 90 points: Opened 2 hours before drinking, then decanted.Pretty good, seemed a little cooked (too much black olives),but overall a pretty decent bottle of a well made wine.Serve it at 16 Celsius,it would last longer, but I think it's time to drink. (5280 views)
Tasted by thunberg on 2/2/2016 & rated 90 points: @Brumont tasting, Stockholm
Sample from magnum bottle
On the nose perfume, red berries, mature, licorice. Good body structure, dry tannins, both smooth and harsh at the same time (very odd). (4884 views)
Tasted by Ungifted on 6/12/2015 & rated 88 points: Deanted for 3 plus hours, complex slightly rustic nose, relatively clean cork. Not as full as either the 1999 or 2000, though it had a decent black fruit palate with medium acidity and tannin. It also lacked the bite of the 2000 but was still excellent value and has plenty of life to go. (5298 views)
Tasted by Julian Marshall on 6/7/2015 & rated 90 points: Very impressive. Still with a fair amount of baby fat, the fruit hasn't developed fully, but there's plenty of it and the future is promising. For the time being, a ripe, rich mouthful of blackberry, redcurrant and liquorice with an intense finish. (4609 views)
Tasted by Frank Murray III on 2/27/2014: I enjoyed this wine alot. Never tried it or the region previously and was poured blind. Poured dark in color. Nose of mint and faint hint of tobacco leaf. Chewey, with iron, dark cherry fruit, rocky and bitter chocolate. Reminded me of a leaner styled petite sirah. Excellent. (4914 views)
Tasted by brigcampbell on 2/27/2014: G5 - Variety is the Spice of Life (Juliette): Blind. Dark purple color. Still plenty of structure after a afternoon decant. Tannins are firm and the wine is very angular. There's a dried leaf quality and a touch of black licorice. Very good, I poured more than my share to pair with the grilled beef. Really nice match. (5807 views)
Tasted by 14frimaire on 8/11/2013: Wow, who needs Bordeaux? This is seriously good. Pulled the cork a couple of hours ago and decanted. There was quite a lot of sediment, and I lost about a glass. That glass is a little cloudy but tastes damn good. Looking forward to the bottle!

ETA: the dregs turned out to be more open than the decanted wine, which was still good, just a little harder to read. Next bottle in 2015 or so. (4962 views)
Tasted by AndersL on 7/28/2013 & rated 92 points: Ripe, lots of dried fruit, tobacco and spices. Still plenty of tannins but fully ready to drink. Probablyat its peak from now and a few years ahead. (4327 views)
Tasted by LFCHALA on 7/15/2013 & rated 92 points: This wine surprised me positively. Rustic. Young. Very good and affordable. (4435 views)
Tasted by Petberg on 7/12/2013: Pop and pour, potdicht. Drie uur decanteren, in de fles en een nachtje wachten. Mooie wijn, prachtige structuur. Vlezig, stoere tannines. Komende jaren vanafblijven! 89+ (2241 views)
Tasted by Finare Vinare on 11/3/2012 & rated 90 points: Initially a bit funky and animal, we gave the wine two hours in the decanter. The air made a lot of difference. Now it's dominated by fruit - developing aromas of ripe black plums and blackberries, dark chocolate and sweet spice. On the palate full and sturdy with high concentration of fruit, big ripe tannins, melting dark chocolate oak and some mentholated freshness. Still quite young, but definitely ready to go after aeration, this 04 now tastes like $50 and seems set to cruise and develop further for at least another ten. Excellent with prime rib and bearnaise. We're happy to have a case left. (4765 views)
Tasted by Patrik_L on 9/7/2012 & rated 91 points: Really great wine to pair with a rib eye steak! (4089 views)
Tasted by Chomsky on 3/14/2011: Shut down. Leave alone for a long time. (5578 views)
Tasted by Rupert on 2/15/2011 & rated 90 points: At Bistrot Bruno Loubet: thick, funky, powerful farmyard wine, lots going on, exciting (5585 views)
Tasted by Ombibulous on 11/24/2010 & rated 84 points: Nice and dry. Firm tannins still. The Tannat comes through. Good (84.5). (5046 views)
Tasted by Freekie35 on 11/24/2010 & rated 89 points: Wijncursus Les 3 (Bij de lokale Vinoloog): Uiterlijk: Bruinrood, ondoorzichtig, Geur: middelzware geur, animaal en hout, geen alcoholische geur, Smaak: vrij intens pepertje en een zuurtje. Redelijk afgeronde tannines. Prachtig glas wijn! (6483 views)
Tasted by Marcyrillo on 11/23/2010 & rated 89 points: ABS - 3 horas de decanter, tabaco, floral, complexo, cacau, frutas negras. Na boca bem tanico mas de boa qualidade, boa acidez, otimo meio de boca. Bem gastronomico e precisa de bons anos ainda. (5235 views)
Tasted by btock on 10/3/2010 & rated 87 points: Tannins still present, straight forward, not the integration of the 2003 (5130 views)
Tasted by KristianT on 7/21/2010 & rated 89 points: A wine for the patient. Needs a lot of time to integrate the powerful tannins. But paired with rich food (I chose this to go with the cassoulet I have been cooking all day), it shows really well. Very peppery and spicy with a long aftertaste. (5627 views)
Tasted by rfcarney on 5/27/2010 & rated 88 points: overpowering tannin and acid, needed food which I didn't have, will try again with food (5650 views)
Tasted by Faryan on 5/9/2010 & rated 89 points: Dinner at Jace's (Jace's House): Decanted at 2pm and served throughout the evening at 8 and then 10pm, the wine is still painfully tannic on the finish, with a nice floral lift of cherries and tapenade, but less depth on the palate as the finish of the tannat grapes are not fully integrated. I think it has very nice upside but won't see its potential for another 7-10 years. Bury and revisit in 2020. (6526 views)

Madiran

Vin de Madiran (l'ESAT de Madiran)

The Madiran appellation is where red wines were born to go with magret and confit de canard. Alain Brumont is a master of this deep, dark-fruited, powerfully grippy style, the tannins melding satisfyingly with the fat of the meat. HT:
