Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 91.1 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 192 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Jonathanmustang on 1/27/2024 & rated 91 points: C’est bien mais wow (861 views)
Tasted by chatters on 1/23/2024: Lemon, apple, a little almost cherry, honey. Tangy, very slightly sour notes of cherry and citrus; mandarin rather than lemon. The mousse lends a little coarseness. Hmm. It feels like it needs a year or two more in bottle to integrate. (876 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 1/22/2024 & rated 91 points: Jadot (and Clair Dau) Chapelle-Chambertin Dinner with Thibault Gagey (Sepia - Chicago IL): Bright citrus with good power, while still nicely rounded and harmonious. Brut Nature lets the wine shine without trying to make a statement here. (719 views)
Tasted by R.H. on 1/1/2024: Nye 2023. 17 vintage, 20 disg. Better a couple hours after opening. Classic (931 views)
Tasted by manonthemoon on 1/1/2024 & rated 92 points: Popped on new years with cheese and meats.
N peach, quince, almonds, minerals, toast, spice
P citrus peel, little peach, chalk, spice, yeast
F long finish, lots of minerals and cut
Overall a great bottle of bubbles.

Tasted by ylkim30 on 12/9/2023: Herbal and cool on the palate, with a heavy streak of smokiness. Dense, brooding, and darkly pitched, it had a real feral wildness to its palate presence. Great acidity, but not jagged at all. It showed really well tonight. (225 views)
Tasted by MC2 Wines on 11/28/2023: Piemonte: Truffles instead of Turkey; 11/23/2023-12/2/2023 (Barolo, Barbaresco, Alto Piemonte and of course Alba): Drinking nicely. It is more oxidized and intriguing and all of that which can be fun. Not a wine that is nearly as available as it was a few years ago. (1393 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 9/17/2023 & rated 91 points: Pausing for the Cause Fundraiser and Dinner (Obelix - Chicago IL): 2017 vintage. Lean lemon, apple, and berry with very good depth and power. Still a few rough edges on finish, so I expect slight upside as this softens. (1965 views)
Tasted by KeithAkers on 8/18/2023 & rated 92 points: The nose is classic Laval. It is aromatic and leans natural, but with excellent complexity with cider notes, gun flint, red apples, quince, toast, saline, meyer lemon, biscuits, and nectarines. The Medium bodied feel is well balanced and with excellent depth along with mouthwatering, high acidity. It's been a little bit since I've had this and its like talking with an old friend. This is everything Laval is about and it still easily hits all of those notes. (810 views)
Tasted by chicsucre on 8/17/2023: Savory is first impression, but in a good way
On the palate, plum, mushroom, picked veggies
Chalky
Me likie!!
However got too much to drink afterwards and forgot to take down the base wine/ disgorgement info lol (1213 views)
Tasted by drwine2001 on 7/27/2023: Book Release Wine Dinner-“The New French Wine” (The Morris, San Francisco): Unknown disgorgement date. Laid back aromas of citrus oil and brioche. Medium weight. Somewhat neutral flavors with only moderate intensity but nice chalk and earth, and it did improve with time in the glass. (1913 views)
Tasted by Frank Murray III on 5/17/2023: Champagne In My Backyard: Served blind. April 2022 disgorgement (if I got it right). Aroma of cardamom. chai tea spice, which is also infused to the wine's flavor, too. I also wrote down graham cracker, so imagine that array of flavor. Nectarine, quince, and pippin apple. Tangy, acid bright finish with a low dose profile. (2625 views)
Tasted by grafstrb on 5/13/2023: Blind Champagne at FMIII's: Tasted blind
7/04/22 disgorgement
Very weird Nose: all I wrote was "bitter bitter". Weird taste, too: medicinal/bitter. Not much finish. Did not like it. (2066 views)
Tasted by WetRock on 5/13/2023: Served blind. Raw fruit on the nose with notes of fruit skin. Very light bodied and chalky. Frothy. Somewhat more cohesive than the Garennes yet still lacking. (1816 views)
Tasted by ciesel on 4/22/2023 & rated 93 points: Wonderful complex sparkler. Enjoyed as the bottle opened up (1525 views)
Tasted by vindictive on 3/26/2023: Excellent , fresh. Only problem was we had it after the Bouchard.. (1575 views)
Tasted by MC2 Wines on 3/11/2023: 2023 Napa in the City: Tasting & Lunch (The Pool/Grill): One of my favorite bubbles and a definite ‘go-to’ for us. This needs some time to warm a bit in the glass because you want it just slightly cooler than room temperature to get all of the flavors. It drinks very well and pouring it around during lunch went quite quickly. (1826 views)
Tasted by MC2 Wines on 3/4/2023: Charleston Food & Wine Festival 2023; 3/2/2023-3/5/2023 (Charleston, SC (various locations)): A perpetual favorite of mine and this evening was no different. The only wine I went back for seconds on. This was lovely. Had all spice notes and herbal and interesting and drinking very well. (1777 views)
Tasted by Ghoulardi on 3/4/2023 & rated 91 points: Much more serious than the Ganerres. Slightly oxidative, nicely rich and nutty despite the zero dosage. (1160 views)
Tasted by aquacongas on 1/5/2023 & rated 93 points: not blind
One of my favourite wines of Laval. Fresh, precise, balanced and long clean finish. Great acidity structure. 92-93 (1944 views)
Tasted by manonthemoon on 1/1/2023 & rated 94 points: Had on New Years day with wife and truffles, cheese, and charcuterie.
N almonds, peach, minerals, herb, toast, spice
P red apple, citrus peel, little peach, chalk, little spice, tons of yeast
F very long, tons of minerals, and lots of cut.
Overall a fantastic wine to start off the new year with.

Tasted by rawdealbuffy on 12/13/2022: A sentimental wine as we opened it when we bought our first house. Showing more oxidative and nutty than I remembered. Brandy soaked orange, brioche, toasted hazelnuts. High acid. Gorgeous wine. (1444 views)
Tasted by MC2 Wines on 12/7/2022: Commanderie des Costes du Rhone - Fall 2022 Intronization (Aquavit): Always a treat to end an evening like this with bubbles. Many thanks to Paul for making it happen. This was great. Just fresh and bright and easy to drink and really welcome after a lot of big red Rhones! (1837 views)
Tasted by MC2 Wines on 11/24/2022: Piemonte: Back to the truffling!; 11/24/2022-12/3/2022 (Wineries and various restaurants): Very tasty as always. Served a touch cold and so needed to Ket it open in the glass. It was all herbal and spice notes. Interesting style of champagne but always very enjoyable. (2212 views)
Tasted by AaronMaxwell on 11/23/2022 & rated 93 points: Excellent balance of dry-sweet. Vibrant fruit. Would pair well with oysters. (1288 views)

Garagiste (9/24/2009)
(NV LAVAL Champagne CUMIERES 1er) Three Dear Friends, Three wines with limited availability so I have to lump them into one offer. This parcel is set to arrive in a week or two and all three wines will ship this fall. All have impeccable provenance directly from the winery cellar: 2003 Castello di Bossi "Corbaia"(W&S94)(GR3) (I know everyone is clamoring for as many 2003s as they can get (yeah right) but this happens to be quite interesting. Beware grey market bottles of this in the US with improper storage): ...and the second wine... 2007 Hubert Lamy St. Aubin "Derri_re Chez Edouard" 1er (BH91) EXTREMELY LIMITED (this wine is what Chardonnay is all about but so rarely is: bathed in the soil, vintage and stone of a specific place - not a specific oak tree. A wine that will make mincemeat out of 99% of the world's examples of the grape - a great effort in a tailor-made vintage for the best sites of St. Aubin): ...and the third... NV Georges Laval Champagne Cumieres 1er Brut Nature EXTREMELY LIMITED (from a 100% certified biodynamic vineyard, farmed BIO for nearly 40 years, this Champagne is amazing - end of story. With delicate and pinpoint notes of anise, nutmeg, ginger and what appears to be pewter coated lace, those that are experimental enough to take a chance on this feminine creation not be disappointed. I drank this last night with one of Australia's foremost experts on Champagne and he called me three times today to make sure I understood how good this wine was. I understand.) France - When it comes to wine, France stands alone. No other country can beat it in terms of consistent quality and diversity. And while many of its Region, Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne most obviously, produce wine as rare, as sought-after and nearly as expensive as gold, there are just as many obscurities and values to be had from little known appellations throughout the country. To learn everything there is to know about French wine would take a lifetime. To understand and appreciate French wine, one only has to begin tasting them. Click for a list of bestselling items from all of France.
Sub-Region:

Champagne - The French region of Champagne (including the cities of Rheims, Épernay, and Aÿ) was the first region in the world to make sparkling wine in any quantity. Today, the name of the region is synonymous with the finest of all sparkling wines, and wine-making traditions of Champagne have become role models for sparkling wine producers, worldwide. Surprisingly, the region of Champagne is now responsible for only one bottle in 12 of all sparkling wine produced. Styles of champagne range in sweetness ranging from an extra brut or brut 0, to the basic brut to demi sec to doux; some houses produce single vintage champagnes and others produce non-vintage (or incorporate wines/grapes of multiple vintages), often to preserve a specific taste; combinations of grape varietals; and colors, including a rosé. There are several sub-appellations, including the Valley of the Marnes river running from Épernay west, Massif de Saint-Thierry north and west of Rheims, Valley of the Ardre, the Mountains of Rheims (between Rheims and Épernay), Côte des Blancs, Côte de Sézanne, and Côte des Bar in the South. Champagne wine only uses three grape varietals (cépages): Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier.
