Community Tasting Notes (average 92.3 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 95 notes)

Tasted by Hamersly on 4/1/2024 & rated 92 points: Ripe and delicious with plenty of sweet cherry. I fall on the side of those who recommend drinking within the next couple of years. (270 views)
Tasted by drwine2001 on 7/9/2023: Decanted and served. Dull ruby to the edge. Complex aromas of dark fruit, licorice, olive, and bark. Full bodied but not ponderous. Magical mix of succulent, perfectly ripe fruit, spice, and savory elements. Sappy, long, and bolstered by terrific acidity and round, ripe tannins. Delicious now but impressively young with miles to go. Outstanding wine by any measure. (1245 views)
Tasted by pbaek on 4/22/2023: This is singing. Wonderful, sweet cherry fruit and white pepper notes, old Grenache showing through. Lively, elegant, no hard edges. This will be long lived. (1086 views)
Tasted by canan on 4/16/2023 & rated 92 points: Dark and lush blackberry fruit but also some aged flavors of mushrooms and wet leaves. It still feels like a fairly young wine but it is certainly ready to drink.
The tannins are nicely integrated but the alcohol is dominating a little bit. (965 views)
Tasted by WJK4 on 3/11/2023 & rated 90 points: I have the good fortune to have many older CDP in my cellar. The Mont Olivet is drinking well but its best day is likely behind it and not a lot of future in it. If you have it, drink up. (982 views)
Tasted by drwine2001 on 7/8/2022: Dull ruby center, not perfect clarity due to light sediment present. Bark and licorice dominate the aromas. Medium weight but still chewy. Some ripe cherry, herbs, and dark, savory flavors with excellent acidity and a tannic finish. Impressive wine that has not yet peaked. Older, more brooding style of Chateauneuf, certainly not an old vine Grenache sweet raspberry bomb! (1882 views)
Tasted by Everything Ahead on 1/4/2022 & rated 93 points: After a series of bad bottles over the years, we finally opened up a good bottle of this vintage. Initially mostly prunes and alcohol on the nose, but over time in the glass fruitcake spice, blueberry, concord grape and herbs de provence. Extremely unflitered, with the appearance of a grape milkshake, but a very nice wine, and still has some tannic structure, suggesting that I leave my remaining couple of bottles for a couple more years. I'm more of a Bordeaux guy these days, as I find CDP to be simultaneously too high-alcohol and too lean in the midpalate, but with cassoulet this CDP really worked well. Sante! (1852 views)
Tasted by beatles on 11/14/2021 & rated 94 points: Showing much better than last time, this has really arrived as a grand neuf. Cool wine yet with all the fixers intens with sweet, lush fruit and local feel, this is a real 2005, upright and concentrated. Will live.
Bagnols-en-Forêt (2421 views)
Tasted by Everything Ahead on 10/11/2021 flawed bottle: This bottle was horribly stinky from Brett and also very tired yet not corked; down the drain. The sad thing is I've had a few bottles over the years and this wine never impressed at all. Bought soon after release and stored in a cool cellar, I can't blame storage, maybe just a lot of bottle/lot variation with this wine? If you have a stash, I recommend trying one soon to see if you have the "good" or the "bad" bottles ... (1789 views)
Tasted by pbaek on 2/25/2021: From my stash bought at the domaine in France. Calm and collected, this is quite cool and subtle, the fruit is at the lighter red end of the spectrum and there are marks of white pepper and Provençal herbs. Still young with plenty of fruit, this has many years left. Lovely wine, actually. (2118 views)
Tasted by valecnik on 12/25/2020 flawed bottle: Cooked. Smells very jammy. Has a hot, boozy note that dominates it. Not right. How sad. (1529 views)
Tasted by beatles on 4/28/2020 & rated 92 points: Cool, calm and collected, quite tight, well structured; needs more time, I think, not as open for business as some 2005's right now.
#PBinthegarden (2463 views)
Tasted by jerhardt on 3/17/2020 & rated 87 points: Listed at 15.5% and acts like it. Not overtly hot, and some would argue it is in balance, which is fair...i.e. everything is big. Not bad, but also not my preferred sytle. (1677 views)
Tasted by grapist on 3/8/2020 & rated 95 points: 30 minutes in decanter and could have used hours. But still a treat. I have repurchased this three times and would buy more. Can’t think of a wine I would rate higher at a lower price (1643 views)
Tasted by short and confused on 3/8/2020 & rated 87 points: Tired (1400 views)
Tasted by grapist on 2/8/2019: disappointed. not good upon opening. Got considerably better after time in the decanter but never approached the near greatness of previous bottles. (2193 views)
Tasted by Rollerball on 2/2/2019 & rated 95 points: Enjoyed next to the '07. Just as you'd expect from the two vintages, the '05 is more finessed, structured, and restrained and is still on its way up. (1915 views)
Tasted by tward on 1/27/2019 & rated 91 points: I agree with DRWINE2001 that this is not near fully mature. Very nice fruit and fine, not at all heavy, more aromatic with a bay leaf and garrigue nose with bright red fruits and some spice. Subtle and should be capable of developing into something excellent with time. My guess is also about five years. (1794 views)
Tasted by yasha on 1/5/2019 & rated 94 points: Very good (1808 views)
Tasted by KPB on 10/31/2018 & rated 91 points: A chicken coop aroma on opening dissipated after an hour or so. Then the wine is lovely and mature. Ripe raspberry and garrigue on the nose, and a soft, lush palate. Delicious! (2198 views)
Tasted by bin905 on 10/7/2018 & rated 92 points: Lively, dark berry, mocha, mint, tar and spice flavor with plentiful fine tannins. Racy. (1504 views)
Tasted by drwine2001 on 6/12/2018: Ruby. Much darker register of fruit than the Cailloux. Bigger, chewier, more tannic. Ripe red and black fruit with broad, tannic finish. My word, this is impressive and not nearly mature. Should be a classic, old style Chateauneuf (i.e., not overly sweet or too syrupy) with 5 or 10 more years in bottle. (2354 views)
Tasted by the godfather on 4/29/2018: Massive, works with meat (1987 views)
Tasted by JOsgood on 4/28/2018: Huge wine. A bit hard to judge. Showed some elegance despite being a bull in a china shop. (2174 views)
Tasted by Rollerball on 4/20/2018 & rated 94 points: A long, lush, just-perfectly-intense, complex, and special wine. The volume is on four and the speakers are great. (1963 views)
Tasted by bin905 on 3/23/2018 & rated 93 points: Initially some funky cellar that dissipated, then black pepper, dried spice and wood scent. Very smooth, earth, dark fruit, Kirsch, mocha and licorice flavor with ample fine tannins. Delicious! (1917 views)
Tasted by susieqni on 3/11/2018: Awesome after fresh seafood and pasta. Great after dinner sipping opens great give it time to breath (1672 views)
Tasted by grapist on 2/17/2018 & rated 93 points: Decanted at the restaurant, but could have used several more hours. Garrigue, meat and spices along with dark fruit. Continued to open and improve in the glass. Shame on me for not taking my own advise on air-time. Sure I left a couple of points in the empty bottle. (1599 views)
Tasted by Claret & CdP Gang on 2/10/2018: Inky red, sweetish nose, bitter chocolate, full bodied, a good cdp, about ready (1659 views)
Tasted by bin905 on 8/23/2017 & rated 91 points: Upon opening it was lively with garrigue, tar and meat flavor. The long finish showed grippy tannins. At that time, I would have been rated 92. However, after breathing for a few hours the flavor and vibrancy ebbed a bit and the tannins softened, warranting an 90 rating. My overall rating is the average of the two ratings. (2153 views)
Tasted by bwine on 8/17/2017 & rated 94 points: Wow. Drinking beautifully now. Delicious, with a long finish, well integrated tannins and fruit. Good acidity remaining. Delightful. Drink or hold, but if I had more, I'd be in the drink camp. (2280 views)
Tasted by rmalloy on 8/2/2017 & rated 92 points: I haven't drunk chateaneuf du pape in a couple of months. It's like coming back to an old friend.

The predominant flavor for me in this wine -- and all great CdPs -- is barleywine, though I would not quibble with calling the flavor "fresh brown fig." Either way, it's a deep and complex flavor. There's still some nice black cherry fruit here, but it's evolving fast. Tannins are fairly strong for CdP -- I like it. I suggest drinking now, though there is plenty of room for aging. (2304 views)
Tasted by Frank Schneider on 5/7/2017 & rated 95 points: Big Ch9 tasting (2748 views)
Tasted by Jeff Leve on 3/4/2017 & rated 94 points: Full bodied, and loaded with layers of sweet, juicy, ripe cherries, kirsch and olives, there is freshness and opulent character to be found here. Drink now, or wait another year or two, this is really a delicious treat. (3788 views)
Tasted by bin905 on 12/24/2016 & rated 91 points: Tasty with dynamic tension through the long finish. (2281 views)
Tasted by schway on 11/24/2016 & rated 92 points: Big wine. Lots of red and dark fruits. Excellent with a healthy decant. (2526 views)
Tasted by Snag One on 10/23/2016 & rated 92 points: Decanted for an hour before pouring. Initially this wine was a little tight but eventually opened to a wonderfully balanced wine. Nice dark fruit layers with some strawberry, mint and toast notes. Enjoyable wine, but it needs time to open up. (2323 views)
Tasted by rmalloy on 7/26/2016: initially I found this wine overbearingly ripe and alcoholic. But four days after opening and leaving it for dead, I really enjoy it. This has the umami foundation I prize in CdP along with pencil shavings, plum, and smoke. (2434 views)
Tasted by Derek Darth Taster on 5/25/2016 & rated 94 points: CDP All-Star Tasting (Extra Space): Tasted blind. Poured into decanter and drank over 3 hours.
Appearance is clear, medium intensity, ruby colour. Legs.
Nose medium intensity, with aromas of earth, red cherries, red plums, slight barnyard. Developing.
On the palate, dry, medium+ acidity, high alcohol (15.5%), firm high tannins, full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of sweet red cherries, red plus, licorice, spice. Long finish. Initially just muscular and rather angular, but this rounded nicely on the palate with more air.
Very good quality. Good structure and concentration. Needs a while in the decanter to open up. A more muscular style rather than elegance here. Drink over the next 5 years.
From Montalivet, La Crau, and Palestor terroirs.
75% Grenache, 15% Syrah and 10% other varietals. Mostly old vines more than 100 years old. Aged in vat and demi-muids for about 18 months. (3443 views)
Tasted by guido23 on 2/20/2016 flawed bottle: Had a very sharp edge to it but was otherwise pleasant. Flawed bottle, I think. (2681 views)
Tasted by AllRed on 2/7/2016 & rated 93 points: Second Sunday Group: 2000 Bordeaux (Barb's): Rose petals, red and white currants, garrigue and pepper notes, developing a lush, grapey fruit note. Very bright and exuberant. Red berry fruit, garrigue and white pepper flavors with a lengthy finish. (3374 views)
Tasted by Pknut on 12/1/2015: Sadly, this is yet another example of my growing distaste for CdP, even from a classic producer in a classic vintage. I find this sweet and uninteresting, yet only 1.5 years ago, I praised it. Greg notes "sweet upfront but then a bitter finish." Dinner at Brad's. (2881 views)
Tasted by Claret & CdP Gang on 9/25/2015 & rated 93 points: Color: dark red
Nose: ripe plums, sweet cherries, just a touch of garringue
Palate: open for business, 15.5% alc but no heat and very well balanced, elegant for a cdp, long and layered finish, should improve
93+ (2697 views)
Tasted by jerhardt on 8/31/2015: Pop and pour. Not that compelling. Kind of hot, spicy, and angular. Next time give it some more air and see what happens. (2556 views)
Tasted by pbaek on 6/2/2015: Dark robe, what captures the nose is aromas of brown fruit and pebber. Nicely restrained palate where the fruit again is towards the brown end of the spectrum, warm and baked fruit, yet there is finesse and elegance here. This is lovely, lovely Chateauneuf in the traditional mold. Fantastic wine on a rainy, Tuesday night in Denmark. (2783 views)
Tasted by AllRed on 8/10/2014 & rated 91 points: Second Sunday Group: 2005 CdP Traditional Cuvees vs. Tete de Cuvees (Neil's): Crimson color, quite reticent at first with generic red cherry notes and not much else. Tannins are firm, with dark fruit and cherry lurking underneath. Develops spice and red fruit notes in the bouquet but also begins to show a bit hot. Red and dark fruit intermingle on the palate, adding an interesting tapenade quality too.

My #5, Domino's #6
Group #8, 67 pts (4850 views)
Tasted by grapist on 4/16/2014: Decanted for two hours; could have used way more as this opened continuously. Top shelf CdP. Hold for several years or give this lots and lots of decanter time. (4193 views)
Tasted by Pknut on 3/29/2014: The dark side of Grenache, rather than the bright red, with notes of fig, lovely balance, silky texture, with a hint of Grenache sweetness on the finish. The silky texture makes this extremely easy to drink. This is also very classic CdP, no gobs, no excessive alcohol, no excessive oak. Papet is the old reliable in today's world of luxury cuvee CdP. (4138 views)
Tasted by ghood on 2/4/2014 & rated 92 points: Good+, but not great. I've had better Papets. Last bottle in my cellar and glad I drank it now as I think it's not going to get any better. Seems to be correct drinking now. I'm not averse at all to older wines especially older CDPs, but the secondary flavors are already prominent in this and it seems to be a bit lacking in the energy department compared to a great CDP at age 9. (4356 views)
Tasted by Tim and Bonnie on 2/1/2014: Neither Bonnie nor I enjoyed this. It's not a bad wine, just not worth the money, $70. But actually, if it were much less I wouldn't seek it out. Flavor showed what seemed like charcoal, slight green bell pepper, and a general veggie vibe under the fruit. Compared to the 2007 Les Cailloux we had a few weeks ago which was $40, this was not even in the ballpark. We gave the LC a 92, but since I'm trying to manage my hubris and hold off on giving low ratings to wines we don't appreciate, I'm not rating this one officially, but for us it's an 84. Buy a Télégraphe instead if $70 is burning a hole in your pocket. (3951 views)
Tasted by BordeauxBuff on 1/7/2014 & rated 93 points: Beginning to enter into its drinking window, this is a full bodied, classic example of CDP, and a good example of the solid 2005 vintage. (3051 views)
Tasted by LFCHALA on 7/15/2013 & rated 92 points: Great wine. Modern style. Full Body. Young. (3131 views)
Tasted by tsec1224 on 4/26/2013 & rated 92 points: Vanilla, coconut, spice, pepper, dried fig, herb, earth on the nose. Opulent sweet spice and cherry coats the mouth with a long vanilla finish. (3203 views)
Tasted by tsec1224 on 2/7/2013 & rated 91 points: Mint, ripe cherry notes wrapped into herbs, magnolia and spice. Still has decent amount of tannins, but balanced by vibrant acidity and weight, which suggests ageability. Minerality lingers on palette with fresh ripe cherry flavor. Drinks well with decanting but can likely improve (3389 views)
Tasted by *Vine* on 10/16/2012: Popped and aerated in bottle for 4-5 hours. Medium-plus garnet/purple, hazy. Complex, multi-faceted nose just jumps out at you and shows extremely intriguing aromas of spiced Chirstmas ham, kirsch, provencal herbs, barbecue spices, milk chocolate, teriyaki sauce, and dried maki wrapper...lots of umami. Medium-plus body. Interestingly, the fruit on the palate veers in the more red-fruited direction, with fresh cherry and raspberry notes accented by cedar shavings, spiced oak, crushed stones and an herbaceous note. Moderate acidity and just a touch of heat. The finish lingers on well past taking a sip. Although the tannins are a touch astringent, this seems to be drinking in a good place but will no doubt go for quite some time as it possesses all the structure necessary for aging.
What a great CdP, this just rocks! (4072 views)
Tasted by dekay on 9/20/2012 & rated 91 points: Somewhat a disappointment. Dark and red berry intermingled with spice; took some time to open up. More red than dark fruit, minerals, light garrigue; keen acidity and matching tannins. Moderate finish. Extended air required; somewhat shut down, I'd wait a at least 2-3 years for the next bottle. (3223 views)
Tasted by Pknut on 9/5/2012: Why did I open this? Did I have some stupid idea that this would be open at all? It wasn't. Really tight, with some dark cherry that turns sour, not in a bad way, just not ripe and forward. This doesn't show any youthful baby fat, and it is tight, lean and inward. Do not open next bottle for three years. (3599 views)
Tasted by bin905 on 5/28/2012 & rated 92 points: Cherry, raspberry, licorice, meat, fig, mineral, light garrigue flavor with full tannins. (3571 views)
Tasted by grapist on 3/31/2012: CdP tasting at our house Disappointing. I should have brought up another bottle. It is quite incredible how much variance there can be from bottles within the same purchase/case. Previous bottles have been great, this wasn't even particularly good. We had the 1990 in the next flight and for some it was the wine of the day. (3673 views)
Tasted by Feindinger on 2/15/2012 & rated 89 points: Nice CDP - upfront fruit balanced by strong but moderated tannins. Nice mouthfeel with medium finish. Typical CDP fruits with strong vegetal favors but not unpleasant. Aeration and decanting time definitely mellowed tannic nature. For those who love Rhone wines, a beautiful CDP - for all others a "nice" wine but not a show-stopper. I enjoyed this beast young but have found its aged counterpart equally enjoyable. Wish I had more than my 2 remaining bottles. (4200 views)
Tasted by pmilne on 10/15/2011 & rated 91 points: Nose of bright raspberries and hints of other red fruits. Slight garrigue present too. Ample tannins drowned out the fruit at first taste, but the fruit came back on the nice, lengthy finish. Definitely needs another 2-4 years. (4206 views)
Tasted by Rollerball on 8/19/2011 & rated 92 points: An outstanding and pure wine with a seamless palate of traditional CdP flavors riding over moderate, inviting structure. (4285 views)
Tasted by mimik on 7/19/2011 & rated 95 points: Absolutely stunning wine. Great purity with lots of red raspberry and smoke with sweet licorice notes framed by a seamless silky texture in the mouth. No grainy tannins-all well woven. A great CDP that will improve with age but incredible to drink now. Long finish. My last bottle but opened for a special occasion. 95+ (4957 views)
Tasted by KimHartman on 6/10/2011: Karaff 3h, följer sen under kvällen. Fikon, kola, plopp. Övermogna jordgubbar, hallonsylt. Något bitter i avslutet (på ett delvis bra sätt), och lite baktung. Frågan är om balansen kommer infinna sig med tiden, jag tvekar. (4717 views)
Tasted by grapist on 5/6/2011 & rated 94 points: Excellent, but not quite up to last bottle. Decanted for 6 hours and it continued to develop in the glass. Probably should wait a couple of years. Don't even think about drinking without at least 4 hours in decanter. (4623 views)
Tasted by grapist on 4/10/2011 & rated 95 points: Decanted and tasted over 3 hours next to the '90. Initially beautifully aromatic but closed to taste, this came around beautifully at Prosecco, Chicago with Wild Boar papardelle with mushrooms and truffle. Rich fruit and great depth were very youthful, particulary next to 15 year older version. Very similar, but so different in maturity. This has a long life ahead of it and may likely eventually surpass the wonderful '90. (4830 views)
Tasted by Rechrom on 2/5/2011 & rated 92 points: Decanted one hour, drunk over next four, hit peak after 2 hours and held up through the end. Very solid bottle. Good nose, strong palate with dark berry fruit and a bit of leather. Medium plus finish. Not a showstopper, not flashy, doesn't dominate food. Drinking well now, I suspect more complexity will emerge with time, a very well put together wine that is a bargain at the price and might easily get better. (4920 views)
Tasted by Sijan on 11/12/2010 & rated 94 points: Delicious. Surprisingly open and approachable now (after aeration). Great fruit. One of the best vintages in our vertical tasting of Cuvee Papet. Bottle was opened ~3-4 hours before tasting, decanted, then poured back into bottle. (5190 views)
Tasted by junglejuice on 11/7/2010 & rated 94 points: Drank mid October, notes are from memory - Just a hair behind the Telegraphe but may prove to be superior in the long run, only time will tell. We decanted it 3 hours and it never fully opened but the components were there for a truly special wine. The dis-jointed sections made for an awesome drink, I can only imagine how great it will be in 5-10 years. Also, the fact I can find this for less than $50 is amazing. An utterly fantastic wine that will be show stopping down the road. 94++ (5295 views)
Tasted by Edward A on 4/26/2010 & rated 92 points: Purchased from HDH, stored at 55 deg. 15% ABV. Popped and poured. Red-purple color. Wonderful bouquet of fruit. Complex flavor of graphite with dark and light fruit. Tannins are still too pronounced, however. Smooth finish. Definitely needs more time. (5463 views)
Tasted by KeithAkers on 11/7/2009 & rated 92 points: Kicking back on the rooftop (Shane's, chicago IL): nose: good and rich nose filled with garrigue, creamed red fruits, red cherries, spices, bits of meaty tones, and some leather. Great depth and balance on the nose and has a more red fruited base to it right now

taste: good tannins and a delicious medium feel with well balanced tones of garrigue, creamed red fruits, red cherries, spices and some leather. Great depth with a real polished feel to it underneath the tannins

overall: this should develop real nicely over the next 5-8 years and seems to have a great spine to have it last a good while. There is a real tasty red fruit style to this and there is a real good purity and depth to the wine already (6536 views)
Tasted by Zweder on 2/4/2009 & rated 92 points: Already nicely developed and very approachable. Very juicy ripe forest fruits; red as well as black. Good spices and bitterness. Offers very nice drinking now and probably at least the next 5 – 8 years. (6349 views)
Tasted by goofy Yno on 1/1/2009 & rated 90 points: earth, cherry, mesquite nose, nice balance a little complexity and medium short finish. (6110 views)
Tasted by *Vine* on 11/27/2008 & rated 94 points: Thanksgiving 2008 and celebrating my 30th birthday (Mom & Dad's house): Decanted for about 2 hours. Deep, black cherry hue. Delightful aromas of spiced red fruits, dark cherry, ginger snap, anise, and a general assortment of herbs and spices. Medium-plus body, great concentration for a Chateauneuf. The fruit glide over the palate like pure silk, redolent in flavors of cherry, raspberry puree, kirsch liqueur, and more. The tannins are big, almost chewy but completely obscured by the wealth of fresh fruit & spice. This wine has tremendous upside.......but is so hedonistic at present it's impossible to fault anyone for opening up a bottle! Really impressive, and a fabulous representation of what was achieved in the Southern Rhone Valley with the 2005 vintage. (7289 views)

Tasted by Pool Boy on 2/28/2008 & rated 92 points: Pork rinds, figs, caramello, pencil lead, butter, sugar daddy, foaming butter in the pan, kirsch, some ash and crunchy gravel

One of my favorite two of the night. So good. And a baby! Glad JT opened it 16 or so hours ahead of when we drank it. 91-92pts. (6561 views)
Tasted by jaimetown on 2/27/2008: Opened and recorked 20 hours ahead of consumption - and it needed it. A really pure dark ruby color with fantastic aromas of kirsch, figs and a little animal character - great length and volume on the palate, with some gripping tannins on the finish. I can see this wine demonstrating that "power without weight" character years down the line when it matures - a terrific bottle of wine. (6684 views)
Tasted by Ben Andersen on 1/14/2008: First time from bottle. On the nose, rather closed, with deep, dark cherry fruit. On the palate, dense and chewy, with dark, plummy fruit and garrigue. Fantastic, very traditionally styled / old-school CdP - though way too young right now. Wait until 2013+ to open another. I suspect this will be incredibly long-lived. FWIW, a half bottle that I poured off tasted better on day 3, and was much more open, suggesting that decanting might not be a bad idea... (6857 views)
Tasted by Ben Andersen on 5/5/2007: Tasted at the domaine. 95% Grenache + 5% Mourvedre. 13,000 bottles made in 2005. 15.8% alcohol. Old vines (about 100 years old). Vineyard sites in La Crau and Pied de Baud (old vine Mourvedre).Much denser fruit than the regular 2005 cuvee. Sweet red / balck cherry fruit. Nice weight and excellent balance. Nice freshness. Elegant and traditional style. (6749 views)

Rockss and Fruit (10/25/2007)
(Mont-Olivet Chateauneuf Du Pape "Cuvee Papet") This was way too young. Like drinking olive juice spiked with hardcore cherry fruit. This bottle had been open for four days and was still wickedly tannic. There was impressive fruit with great persistence but this wine needs 20-30 years. It really had a dense structure.

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.

"As I have written many times in the past, the sweet spot for drinking Châteauneuf du Papes is usually the first 5-6 years after the vintage. Then they seem to go through an adolescent, awkward, and sometimes dormant stage, only to re-emerge around year 10-12, where the majority of wines are often fully mature. The best of them will continue to hold on to life (but rarely improving) beyond 15-20 years. It is only the exceptional Châteauneuf du Papes that will evolve for 20-25+ years, and those are indeed a rarity. However, things may be improving dramatically in terms of the longevity of Châteauneuf du Pape, although Grenache-dominated wines, the vast majority of wines produced in the appellation, are wines that do not have the polyphenol (extract and tannin) content of top Cabernet Sauvignons, Merlots, or Syrah-based wines. Nevertheless, the younger generation in Châteauneuf du Pape has taken seriously the farming in the vineyards. There are more organic and biodynamically run vineyards here than in any other appellation of France. The yields, which were already low, are even lower today (20-35 hectoliters per hectare), and of course, the proliferation of top luxury and/or old-vine cuvées gives a significant boost to the number of wines that will evolve past 25 or 30 years. The advantage of these wines is their broad window of drinkability." - Robert Parker
