Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 88.8 pts. and median of 89 pts. in 34 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by wayfarer on 11/1/2015: Deep yellow. Tart, and trending a bit to over the hill--not oxidized but the former green apple & citrus, acid &vmineral has become flat and a bit harsh. (1058 views)
Tasted by pkbowen on 8/12/2015 & rated 92 points: PnP at refrigerator temperature. Presents as a medium-gold color with no obvious sediment. The nose is subtle and complex, with aromas of chalk and ocean spray, a touch of honey-covered sawdust, and a spicy/savory undertone reminiscent of sage and white pepper. It seemed to change a little bit each time we picked up the glass. On the palate, it enters with a slightly woody flavor underscored by honeyed fruit. Medium, well-balanced acid kicks in on the midpalate and accentuates the flavors of sappy wood and herbs. The mouthfeel is very refined: round, smooth, but with a reasonable acidic backbone. It finishes medium(+) with some honey and sappy wood flavors.

It's hard to believe, but this low-priced 2010 offering seems to be drinking at peak right now. If you have one of these in your cellar, it's time to pop the cork! We will call this bottle "excellent," 92/100. (1802 views)
Tasted by joet626 on 8/31/2013 & rated 90 points: Very good! I am not a chardonnay guy but this was great. Very little oak and plenty of apple and pear with a nice refeshingn finish. i was surprised at how much I liked it (3005 views)
Tasted by fredb on 7/8/2013: Medium yellow-gold color. Aromas of ripe pineapple, butterscotch, and baked apple. Palate has slightly overripe pineapple, butterscotch, lemon, and pear notes with some sweet floral finishing elements. This is not long for this window of prime drinking and it is time to get at it. Drink up. (2160 views)
Tasted by fredb on 4/10/2013: Golden color. Aromas of honeysuckle, peach, pineapple, and pear. Yellow apple, mango and honeysuckle on the palate lead into a medium-short finish. This picks up butterscotch and lemon notes with time in the glass. The brightness of youth is wearing off and what is left is solid, but this bottle didn't perform to the heights of other vintages at this point in its journey. Drink or hold another year. (2229 views)
Tasted by K&J on 4/6/2013 & rated 91 points: Very nice Burgundian white wine. One of those white wines that needs air to improve. Suggest opening for at least 1 hour before drinking. Even better the next day! (3388 views)
Tasted by Kriz on 3/28/2013 & rated 87 points: Straw yellow, full bodied Macon. Apple, pineapple and a hint of sweat. Well done in this price range. (3498 views)
Tasted by Dulcie and Aylwin on 1/26/2013: The second of two devoured. I cannot really add anything to the previous note from a couple of months ago. The most pleasing aspect is the nose, quite a seductive oaky, floral perfume; on the palate maybe just a little lacking in weight: minerality and citrus, almost a touch of sweetness, but fades quickly. (2261 views)
Tasted by drwine2001 on 1/12/2013: Medium yellow. Buttery, ripe fruit with some oak toast. Not too heavy and better structured than the aromatics suggest with good acidity, but the wood is overdone and there is an odd popcorn element. (2333 views)
Tasted by bin905 on 11/28/2012 & rated 90 points: Full body and multi-layered; featuring citrus, pear and limestone flavor with plenty of acidity. (3911 views)
Tasted by astroman on 11/17/2012: Great balance sharp acid. (2714 views)
Tasted by Dulcie and Aylwin on 11/11/2012: I cannot really agree with any of the previous TNs completely with this wine. Pale straw in color with a very pleasing perfumed aroma of oak, wet stones and floral notes (don't ask me for species!). The region is apparent in the chalky minerality, but there is surprising sweetness in the bracing citrus; very clean on the palate. Let's put this in perspective: I paid a shade over $12. I am happy with that outcome. (1776 views)
Tasted by fredb on 8/12/2012: Medium yellow color. Aromas of peach, pineapple, ripe pear, and passion fruit. Palate has pineapple and passion fruit up front with pear and apple lurking with a bright floral finish that is medium-length. This has good density and some minerality and sap to help keep it more than an interesting quaff. Delicious. Drink or hold. (1001 views)
Tasted by Ben Christiansen on 8/6/2012: Terrior driven. Shows chard fruit but holds to the French style. Nice at $18. Not too tart, just fat enough, finds it itself. (1920 views)
Tasted by Sauvyfan on 6/23/2012 & rated 86 points: This wine had quite a bit of minerality driving it. But the nose was muted and the palate was boring. (936 views)
Tasted by baseballvino on 6/12/2012 & rated 87 points: Mild pear and apple notes with very nice minerality. Good taste and a hint of butter. No oak and a nicely balanced wine. Repeat buy at a fair price. Solid, good wine. (1608 views)
Tasted by rc@ughey on 5/21/2012 & rated 88 points: Lovely Macon and a worthy substitute of a Cote de Beaune white Burg. This has sharp acidity and lovely citrus fruit in a very well balanced package. A winner. (1832 views)
Tasted by vin0vin0 on 4/14/2012 & rated 90 points: I'm liking this more with each bottle I try. (1291 views)
Tasted by isaacjamesbaker on 4/8/2012 & rated 89 points: This is a really solid chardonnay. I love the richness of the nose, with pear and butter aromas, along with a zesty lime aspect. This wine has terrific acid on the palate, bright and fresh, but there's also some green pear and apple butter. The finish is absolutely delicious, with a streak of minerals and a rush of green apple fruit. I'm considering making this my "house" chardonnay. (1361 views)
Tasted by gbshell on 2/24/2012 & rated 87 points: Apples and pears balanced by nice citrus acidity; underneath, hint of sweetness, vanilla and oak. Ever-so-slight tannin feel. Overall effect is very smooth and pleasant. Complex enough for fussy wine-lovers, but also a real crowd-pleasing apertif. First-rate value. (1479 views)
Tasted by cartime on 2/23/2012 & rated 90 points: A whiff of sulfur at first, making way to citrus and gypsum on the nose. With more air, developed candied pineapple, light caramel, and spice aromas. Nectarine, Meyer lemon, smokey mineral, creamy palate with great acidity. Really nice balance of ripeness with acidity and minerality. My first 2010 white Burg and so far, so good. (1383 views)
Tasted by Keith Levenberg on 1/31/2012 & rated 85 points: This is done with a really light touch for a Macon, almost Alpine in style in its streamwater-like presence and purity. I'm not sure it even tastes like chardonnay. A pleasant food wine when you want something easygoing and flexible, but it doesn't have enough personality to be interesting on its own for purposes other than washing something down. (2239 views)
Tasted by shaftlet on 1/17/2012 & rated 87 points: Peach, pear, quince with a chalky minerality. Quite viscous with some backbone. Very nice. (1551 views)
Tasted by vin0vin0 on 12/22/2011 & rated 88 points: Very nice white burgundy, crisp, clean, minerally with good balance. Better if served not too chilled. (1528 views)
Tasted by isaacjamesbaker on 11/21/2011 & rated 89 points: Wines with Val's Parents; 11/19/2011-11/25/2011 (Washington, D.C.): Poured this for Val and her parents, and we all really enjoyed it. The nose shows lovely pear, butter, cheese rind and some walnut shell. The palate shows fresh acid and creamy, buttery fruit. Lots of golden apple and pear, backed up by walnut and hazelnut. This is a very nice wine that has me excited about the 2010 Macon chardonnays. (2156 views)

Château de La Greffiere

Producer website

U.S. Importer (Addt'l Info)

Vincent and Isabelle Greuzard started to work with us about ten years ago and after one or two years let me make my own assemblage taking the oldest vines, aging about one-quarter in barrique, about one-half new. We have happily continued this tradition since, with now also a portion of the blend being barrel fermented, but always being sure to get the old vines (Vieilles Vignes). The village of La Roche Vineuse (meaning vinous rock) appropriately named for the bevy of limestone found in the vineyards, is located in the heart of the Maconnais, and captures its true "terroir". This lovely wine balances richness with minerality; the mid-palate and length are classic Burgundy. There are less expensive Macons; there may be greater Macons, but we feel there is no finer Macon for the money.

Burgundy

Les vins de Bourgogne (Bureau interprofessionnel des vins de Bourgogne) (and in English)

Burgundy - The province of eastern France, famous for its red wines produced from Pinot Noir and its whites produced from Chardonnay. (Small of amounts of Gamay and Aligoté are still grown, although these have to be labeled differently.) The most famous part of the region is known as the Cote d'Or (the Golden Slope). It is divided into the Cote de Beaune, south of the town of Beaune (famous principally for its whites), and the Cote de Nuits, North of Beaune (home of the most famous reds). In addition, the Cote Chalonnaise and the Maconnais are important wine growing regions, although historically a clear level (or more) below the Cote d'Or. Also included by some are the regions of Chablis and Auxerrois, farther north.

# 2013 Vintage Notes:
* "2013 is a vintage that 20 years ago would have been a disaster." - Will Lyons
* "low yields and highly variable reds, much better whites." - Bill Nanson
* "Virtually all wines were chaptalised, with a bit of sugar added before fermentation to increase the final alcohol level." - Jancis Robinson

# 2014 Vintage Notes:
"We have not had such splendid harvest weather for many years. This will ensure high quality (fragrant, classy and succulent are words already being used) across the board, up and down the hierarchy and well as consistently from south to north geographically apart from those vineyards ravaged by the hail at the end of June." - Clive Coates

# 2015 Vintage Notes:
"Low yields and warm weather allowed for ample ripeness, small berries and an early harvest. Quality is looking extremely fine, with some people whispering comparisons with the outstanding 2005 vintage. Acid levels in individual wines may be crucial." - Jancis Robinson

# 2017 Vintage Notes:
"Chablis suffered greatly from frost in 2017, resulting in very reduced volumes. As ever, the irony seems to be that what remains is very good quality, as it is in the Côte d’Or. Cooler nights across the region have resulted in higher-than-usual acidity, with good conditions throughout the harvest season allowing for ripe, healthy fruit." - Jancis Robinson

# 2018 Vintage Notes:
"The most successful region for red Burgundy in 2018 was the Côte de Beaune. The weather was ideal in this area, with just enough sunlight and rain to produce perfectly balanced wines naturally." - Vinfolio
