Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 91.7 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 151 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by seeyouintee on 3/30/2024 & rated 91 points: Purple core, with just a hint of bricking at the rim. Powdery plum, blackberry, soubois, crushed violets, and anise on the nose. Palate is still surprisingly dense, but follows the nose, with marked acidity. Long (30+ seconds) finish, with a lingering tartness. Very good now, but if I had another bottle I'd hold it for 5+ years. (528 views)
Tasted by Bubblesearcher23 on 3/30/2024 & rated 90 points: This was not powerful, but was quite elegant. Deep garnet with a browning rim. Nose is clean, not super perfumed, with raspberry, red fruit, gamey notes, cloves, and a hint of pepper. On the palate, blueberry, red fruits, red licorice, herbs. I think this is a well made wine, but doesn’t bowl me over with complexity and flavor. Solid QPR, but not sure I’d buy again. Unsure if I love the blueberry bomb on the palate. (513 views)
Tasted by Goofienewfy on 2/18/2024 & rated 95 points: Dirt, spice, dark fruit. Good mix of acidity and tannin finishes strong. Peaking. Good stuff. (758 views)
Tasted by drmilkweed on 2/11/2024 & rated 91 points: brambly, red and black fruit, herbs, medium finish, complex aroma, drink now (661 views)
Tasted by Ruby99 on 2/4/2024 & rated 90 points: Improves after 1 hour decant (813 views)
Tasted by WojteG on 2/4/2024 & rated 93 points: 4 months ago I had a fantastic 2017 vintage(97 points !) Let's check out this one.

I think this wine is at its peak. Harmony, balance, mellowness - top notch. My subjective complaint - not enough concentration of fruit flavors or maybe it it like this by design. Who knows.
We have a lot of herbs, cocoa powder (!), tobacco and after these we have some fruit like blackberry and black cherry. Soft spice from the beginning to the end (nice). Soft acidity and tannins. If you expect muscular wine it's not here. If you like finesse one - you will be in heaven.
15% ABV and absolutely no alcohol bite!
May I say this is "slow wine" in the aspect, that you don't want to take one sip after another.
The right word is - delectable. Great with cheese, baguette, salami or completely solo.

2012 vintage got 92 points according to the WA Vintage Guide. Outstanding. Early maturing and accessible.

Tasted by DizzyOneCheck on 12/30/2023 & rated 91 points: Decanted, drank cooler than room temp but warmer than cellar temp. On the palate it hits all the expected notes, with layers of herbs, bramble, mint and anise/licorice, but (for my taste) lacked a bit of depth and concentration. Overall very pleasant and drinking well currently, 90-92. (829 views)
Tasted by SLOFred on 12/30/2023 & rated 91 points: Not one of the better bottlings of this wine that I have had over the years, but certainly not flawed. (688 views)

(659 views)
Tasted by peter.mancell@mfg.com.au on 12/19/2023 & rated 92 points: No change in my views. (772 views)
Tasted by Supercuts on 12/11/2023 & rated 90 points: This had good typicity but I found both my bottles to be a little bland. The great CdP flavors were there, but it lacked concentration. It struck me as more of a sipping wine, which was surprising for the region. (728 views)
Tasted by stonedog on 11/13/2023: SO – we mentioned 95 points, right? Goodness, this will make your skin get goosebumpy, we think – savory, ripe blueberries, raspberries, and cherries for days, tons of that fantastic “garrigue” (sweet roasted herbs like fennel, lavender, and thyme), chocolatey, spicy earth, licorice and graphite, black pepper, and….WOW wow wow! Under $40 is cray cray! 95 points! 11 years YOUNG Robert parker (900 views)
Tasted by cos65 on 10/19/2023 & rated 90 points: Clear ruby
Light cranberry aromas
This particular bottle is unexpectedly quite backward, medium bodied, great acidity, but still in a rather dense shell. Certainly restrained in this appellation.
Nice but hopefully will open up and be more generous with a little more time and coaxing. YFS (1046 views)
Tasted by asajoseph on 10/15/2023 & rated 96 points: Really blown away by this, I’d say it’s in its sweet-spot of maturity now. Gentle palate is perfectly integrated plum and black cherry fruit with a soft pepper and freshly milled oak character, delicate black chocolate & and cocoa, with a cinnamon note just to round it all out. Glorious, loved it. (969 views)
Tasted by SawgrassSteve on 10/11/2023 & rated 92 points: The nose is absolutely beautiful and very berry. Garnet color and holding together well. Decanted with aerator and trying my best to be patient. On the PNP, is a lovely hint of fennel on the finish and lots of berries. I believe this will continue to open up. Just gotta slow my roll.

(1606 views)
Tasted by Hamersly on 9/10/2023 & rated 93 points: Ready to go after a 1 hour decant. Plenty of fruit and very fine tannins. Drink over the next few years, great QPR. (1362 views)
Tasted by Delund on 7/18/2023 & rated 90 points: 1 hour decant, served at 60 F. Deep garnet color. Initial licorice-heavy nose gradually softened, with floral notes and earth. Smoke emerged after 2 hours. Noticeably prominent tannins evolved from rough through velvet to silkiness with air. Very dry wine. Alcohol well-integrated after decant. Low acidity. Pleasantly sour blackberry fruit on the palate, with clove, cedar, cherry liqueur on the palate. Short finish. (1314 views)
Tasted by beatles on 7/14/2023 & rated 90 points: Remains a bit forced. Very concentrated, clean fruit, intense - but to dry. Primary, yes, but would not opt to keep it, will dry out, I fear. Shall see tomorrow.

Tasted by bobadopolis on 4/13/2023 & rated 94 points: Powerfully tannic on opening, but was very approachable after approximately 3 hours in the decanter, and the following evening was spectacular. Would probably hold for another 2-3+ years, or recommend lengthy decant if drinking now. (982 views)
Tasted by Erik Snel on 2/27/2023: ‘Chateauneuf with Bordeaux Left-bank attitude despite the high amount of Grenache from 100 years old vines. Produced by flying winedoctor Xavier Vignon. (1187 views)
Tasted by Eurojon on 1/14/2023 & rated 92 points: Decanted for 30 minutes, a bit of sediment in the bottle. The wine is dark and opaque. On the nose, immediate wiff of raisins, with undertones of jammy red berries and bit of honey. On the palate a mix of dark and red berries that is dominated by anis and tar. The tannins are resolved and acidity on the medium-low side. The bottle says 15% alcohol but the heat was not noticeable. About 20 second aftertaste. Maybe somewhat unusual taste profile for a CdP, but very enjoyable. Glad I have two more, though I won’t save them for long. (1210 views)
Tasted by EMAZurich on 12/17/2022 & rated 94 points: Sehr dörrfruchtig in der Nase.
(1398 views)
Tasted by NeuroWine on 11/19/2022 & rated 96 points: Beautiful balance of dark fruit, rose, mild earthiness, but still fresh and vibrant. Soft tannins. Very friendly with Indian food, even bitter melon! Just a delight all around . (1316 views)

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.

"As I have written many times in the past, the sweet spot for drinking Châteauneuf du Papes is usually the first 5-6 years after the vintage. Then they seem to go through an adolescent, awkward, and sometimes dormant stage, only to re-emerge around year 10-12, where the majority of wines are often fully mature. The best of them will continue to hold on to life (but rarely improving) beyond 15-20 years. It is only the exceptional Châteauneuf du Papes that will evolve for 20-25+ years, and those are indeed a rarity. However, things may be improving dramatically in terms of the longevity of Châteauneuf du Pape, although Grenache-dominated wines, the vast majority of wines produced in the appellation, are wines that do not have the polyphenol (extract and tannin) content of top Cabernet Sauvignons, Merlots, or Syrah-based wines. Nevertheless, the younger generation in Châteauneuf du Pape has taken seriously the farming in the vineyards. There are more organic and biodynamically run vineyards here than in any other appellation of France. The yields, which were already low, are even lower today (20-35 hectoliters per hectare), and of course, the proliferation of top luxury and/or old-vine cuvées gives a significant boost to the number of wines that will evolve past 25 or 30 years. The advantage of these wines is their broad window of drinkability." - Robert Parker
