Tasted by srh on 8/4/2018: Winebar [4 Whites, 8 Reds, & 7 *shared* wines] from 08/03/18] (Vintage Wines Ltd., San Diego, CA): "The Syrah undergoes a traditional style fermentation in concrete Nomblot tanks, incorporating 35% whole bunches which are foot crushed. Spontaneous, natural fermentation occurs with minimal punch down and pump over’s. The wine spends 12-14 days on the skins before being racked into a combination of a 2500L foudres & older FR oak barrels for 13 mos maturation." 13.68% ABV, 1.7 g/l R.S., 5.6 g/l T.A., & 3.74 pH.

N: Ripe, lots going on, but tough to parse; Intensity lurking!

P: Med body; RNDISH etry with NICE frt met by some puckerish astringency which loses the MAJORITY of its bite as it transitions into a LONG, balanced, VERY slightly tangy, very, VERY slightly bitter finish with notes of swtness to the very, VERY fine tannins. Needs/DESERVES another 12-18 mos, then approaching its 10th. My VG+/EXC-. 94 pts Tim Atkin, 88 WS, & 17/20 Jancis Robinson. [This vendor's $22.95 is ≈$6 < than the only U.S. wine-searcher listing, & that vendor wants a min order of 6 bottles!] (1037 views)
Tasted by HG1xGinnel on 5/9/2018: Restrained nose full of red fruits, spice, hints of tar and leather. The fruit is also restrained and elegant the tannins are smooth. The wine does have a rustic old fashioned side but for the most part its clean well made and modern.

Nicely balanced South African Syrah which shows a restrained old world feel to a new world wine and offers good value. drink now but good a for the next 3 years or so.

Decent sediment in my bottle so worth decanting. (845 views)
Tasted by JimmyBubbles on 12/13/2016 & rated 85 points: Sacado a ciegas en Lavinia.

Clara syrah. Ahumado, animal, alguna violeta.

(979 views)

Syrah

Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.

Stellenbosch

The historical town of Stellenbosch boasts a winemaking tradition which stretches back to the end of the 17th-century.

Stellenbosch is the educational and research centre of the winelands. Stellenbosch University is the only one in South Africa with a viticultural and oenological department, and many of the country's most successful winemakers studied there. The Nietvoorbij Institute of Viticulture and Oenology is also in Stellenbosch and this organisation has one of the most modern experimental wineries in the world and, at its experimental farms (situated in several wine growing districts), important research into new varietals, clones and rootstocks is undertaken.

The mountainous terrain, good rainfall, deep well-drained soils and diversity of terroirs make this a sought-after viticultural area. The rapidly increasing number of wine estates includes some of the most famous names in Cape wine. The district, with its mix of historic estates and contemporary wineries, produces excellent examples of almost all the noble grape varieties.

The intensively farmed Stellenbosch district has been divided up into several smaller viticultural pockets including Jonkershoek Valley, Papegaaiberg, Simonsberg-Stellenbosch, Bottelary, Devon Valley and Banghoek.
