Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 91.5 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 27 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by jlhkiss on 4/21/2024 & rated 93 points: Opened and decanted 1.5 hours ahead of seared filet, roasted potatoes, and grilled zucchini in olive oil. Was reductive on opening but the nose eventually blossomed into a lovely floral array of cherry blossoms, potpourri, red roses, crushed gravel, and mint. The palate is medium-full, round, silky, and voluptuous, bringing blackberries, blueberries, and cherries, followed by scattered coffee, tobacco, eucalyptus, leather, and that orange peel note into a refined finish. Much improved over our last tasting a few years ago, as this has retained its outstanding acidity and refined tannins yet developed more fruit and freshness on the palate. Drink 2024-2030. Technical score: 93. Enjoyment score: 93. (251 views)
Tasted by Swajln on 7/6/2023 & rated 92 points: Excellent wine. First impression was good after popping the cork. Smooth and full of complex flavors - dark fruits and tannins. After decant everything was balanced. Wish I had more! (675 views)
Tasted by edjBoca on 9/10/2022 & rated 91 points: This is too young to drink...closes down pretty fast. (953 views)
Tasted by Tahlequahdave1972 on 8/10/2022 & rated 92 points: Decanted for an hour plus. Nicely balanced with a hint of cinnamon spice on the front end along with blue fruits that covered the palate. Medium body and medium length finish, displaying Spring Mountain District fruit throughout. Drink now or enjoy over the next three to five years. (1052 views)
Tasted by jlhkiss on 6/21/2022 & rated 93 points: Opened and decanted an hour ahead of seared NY Strip off the grill. Dark crimson color. The floral nose brings cherry blossoms, spring violets, blackberry jam, and some hints of herbs and spices. The palate is medium, round, compact, and juicy, bringing a large red core of red cherries, raspberries, and pomegranate encased in plums, blueberries, and fresh blackberries, followed by lingering tobacco, eucalyptus, and orange peel into a smooth, refined finish. This is the definition of an elegant, old-school Napa Cab, and should reward another 10+ years of aging. Drink 2022-2032+. Technical score: 93. Enjoyment score: 93. (1166 views)
Tasted by winecadence on 10/4/2021 & rated 93 points: This is probably my most favorite second label. Togni wines are better consumed after some time in the bottle (ideally +5 years). Decanted for 2 hours and was drinking well, but was really shining on day 2. I will wait a couple years before opening another one. (1482 views)
Tasted by CMN on 2/7/2021 & rated 91 points: Nose of purple fruits and cedar. On the palate, red fruits, cassis, cedar and some balsa wood. Medium bodies with nice acidity; tannins are fine grained and add some interest. With air a pleasant green herbal note appears, that seems most prominent on the finish. Drinking well today, but would benefit from more time. Better in 5 years.

This second wine is more enjoyable for my palate than most Napa Cabs at twice the price. A good food wine and a great QPR for a mountain Cabernet. (1919 views)
Tasted by winecadence on 1/18/2020 & rated 93 points: Beautiful Napa Cab that presents more like a classic Bordeaux. Understated elegance. Silky smooth mouthfeel with smooth tannins that follow during lengthy finish. Second label - no way! This is an amazing wine with a great QPR. I decanted for 3 hours. Opened up slowly. It shows potential to age for another 10 to 15 years. (2066 views)
Tasted by Nutty08 on 12/1/2019 & rated 94 points: Awesome Napa can at this price point. Shows well, but still pretty wound up. Fine red fruits, quit herbal with a clear leafy edge to the cab. Big plus in my opinion. Holds the finish well. Minimal oak influence to my palate. Probably has upside but delicious now. Fine polished tanning back bone is there. Best with food if drinking now. (2122 views)
Tasted by Thirsty1 on 5/29/2019: This is one of the great value wines coming out of Napa. It is exactly what it should be and I've never had a bad bottle - nor one with a lot of bottle age but my assumption is this wine would last you 10-15 years. (2254 views)
Tasted by Glencoewine on 2/2/2019 & rated 91 points: Drank over two nights. No Decant. Great QPR. Will buy more. (2109 views)
Tasted by winecadence on 11/30/2018 & rated 94 points: More of this please. Beautiful bottle. Deep red color. Full bodied. Dark red fruit. Really started to shine after an hour decant and another hour just passing time. Cherries, plums, and licorice. Initially just smooth, and then the flavors evolve. The finish lingers. Nice balance of acidity and tannins. There’s some more age out of this one. This does not drink like a second label. (2247 views)
Tasted by joraesque on 9/26/2018 & rated 90 points: Tight upon opening, it softened up after one hour of air. Well balanced.
No ABV statement on the label. (1854 views)
Tasted by peternelson on 5/25/2018 & rated 91 points: Excellent cab, all classic Cab notes, very bordeaux-like but for a little riper fruit. Nicely done. For blind (2341 views)
Tasted by Nutty08 on 2/25/2018 & rated 93 points: Fruit forward, yes, but quite restrained by Napa standards. Blue and red fruits, with hints of tobacco leaf and sage. Palate is quite fine, polished tannins, solid concentrated fruit. Soft tannins for a wine this young. Hard to believe this was a second wine. Terrific. (2369 views)
Tasted by pdev on 1/31/2018 & rated 90 points: Classic Napa cab nose...leaning more towards the red fruits, but very ripe, almost sweet fruit . Palate is pleasing, tart cherry, dusty tannin. Very well made. (1971 views)
Tasted by VeniceCalif on 12/5/2017 & rated 88 points: Decanted 90 mins. ahead and still somewhat tight. Very deep garnet color. Nice nose of plums, cassis, dried herbs. Medium-bodied on the palate with tight acidity with gives a lifted texture. Finishes with moderate, drying tannins. This is austere. Labeled only a "table wine" with no ABV, which means that it's probably around 13%. It may open up after awhile, or a few years in the cellar. (1913 views)
Tasted by ShayGlenn on 12/5/2017 & rated 90 points: Young and big fruit bomb (2039 views)
Tasted by peternelson on 11/15/2017 & rated 92 points: Fantastic cab, with deep leather, pipe tobacco, herbal notes, forest floor; very structured with good acidity, strong by fine tannins, and rich mouthfeel. This is a great bargain, I think it's the same as the estate, only younger vines. Should go for 10-20 years easily. Prefered this over the Ch. d'Issan 2010. (1786 views)
Tasted by Ben Christiansen on 9/28/2017: Well, i like it. Green heading to violet, hard edge ferrous red tannins. True springmountain. (2145 views)
Tasted by Ben Christiansen on 9/25/2017: That smells great. Classic Spring Mountain character. And crunchy green tannins. Right up my alley. Reminds me of Smith Madrone before they switched to French oak. (2066 views)
Tasted by cmr on 5/15/2017 & rated 88 points: Drank over 3 days and it just never showed much. (2044 views)

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
