Seems barrel aged in a neutral oak for several years, dense viscosity, rich straw with hint of cloudiness. Weighty neutral fruit and low-florality honey needing more interest otically, sweet palate impression dusted with mint powder, and fine length. With the right dish this could be an inspired wine. Clean fresh nose on the fruity side. Body – full, intense, oily, powerful but well balanced, finishes very long. Balance is impeccable, the alcohol 15% alc – global warming is felt in Alsace as well. (1203 views)

Grapefruit and other citrus fruit like lemon as well as pineapple and toast. Medium + intensity on the nose and off-dry on the palate with medium + acidity. These wines come from lieu-dit(s) located within [a] Grand Cru vineyard(s), but were not labeled with their respective vineyard names (a requirement for Alsace Grand Cru AOC.) As a matter of fact, this seems to have been deliberately avoided, purportedly for reasons given below.

IT MUST BE EMPHASIZED THAT NOT EVERY WINE MADE IN A GRAND CRU VINEYARD IS ENTITLED TO THE AOC ALSACE GRAND CRU BECAUSE THERE ARE SEVERAL OTHER REQUIREMENTS, NOT LEAST YIELD AND permitted VARIETIES.

NOTE THAT what is claimed by Robert Parker as an Alsatian-dialect trivalent for the Burgundian 'Grand Cru' or the German 'Grosses Gwächs', that is, Grossi Laüi, seems to have no official standing in the wine law that I could find as of this date. The Hugels are knows to be among a handful of powerful estates who, for various reasons, have strongly resisted participation in the Alsace Grand Cru system, and its efforts at promoting a separate system probably should be seen as self-promotional, in the view of some. In 2017, those resisters were beginning to work with the system, and it is expected that this will influence the labeling identity of subsequent vintages. I expect this may cause some confusion as to wine identities.

In Cellar Tracker, it is strongly suggested that wines not be listed as Grand Cru unless the maker has chosen to make that label claim, and is prepared to defend it to the Appellation authorities. However, exceptions may arise, and will undoubtedly be structured into the CT infomatics.

Pinot Gris

Wines made from the Pinot gris vary greatly and are dependent on the region and wine making style they are from. Alsatian Pinot gris are medium to full bodied wines with a rich, somewhat floral bouquet. They tend to be spicy in comparisons with other Pinot gris. While most Pinot gris are meant to be consumed early, Alsatian Pinot gris can age well. German Pinot gris are more full-bodied with a balance of acidity and slight sweetness. In Oregon the wines are medium bodied with a yellow to copper-pink color and aromas of pear, apple, and/or melon. In California, the Pinot gris are more light bodied with a crisp, refreshing taste with some pepper and arugula notes. The Pinot grigio style of Italy is a light-bodied, often lean wine that is light in color with sometimes spritzy flavors that can be crisp and acidic. Although this wine can be very sweet, it will begin to lose its acidity when it is nearly ripe.

Pinot gris is considered an "early to market wine" that can be bottled and out on the market within 4–12 weeks after fermentation.
