Tasted by Oldmanzin on 5/15/2024 & rated 93 points: Silky smooth texture with blackberry preserves, mint, Chinese allspice. So easy to drink and enjoy. Good juice. (102 views)
Tasted by RPerro on 2/19/2024 & rated 93 points: 1 hour decant; paired with seafood cioppino. Delicious, as fully expected! Deep and brooding black fruits, cracked pepper, vanilla and some bitter scorched earth notes on the finish. Great stuff and drinking well right now. Drink now - 2031. (1010 views)
Tasted by corkscrews on 2/2/2024 & rated 93 points: A nose of dark fruit and spice, dark black ink in color. A full bodied red, with blackberry, blueberry, spiced flavors on long finish, was very good, short decant. www.winelx.com (1025 views)
Tasted by CabinConnoisseur on 12/20/2023 & rated 93 points: This wine has certainly improved since I last tried it a few years ago. Aromas and flavors of dark fruit are quite robust. On the palate there is also black pepper a d some earthy undertones. Full bodied with medium lto long in length, with the black pepper most long lasting. (1270 views)
Tasted by caroleandjay on 12/3/2023 & rated 91 points: 50 minute decant, could have used more.
Clear, deep ruby with purple hint. Just beyond minimal meniscus with high viscosity.
N - Dark fruit - black raspberry, black cherry, blackberry with green herbs, bacon, mushroom. Great nose.
P - Powerful fruit (as on nose), and strong notes of alcohol and tannins. Baking spices and coffee in addition to the fruit.
Struct - Dry, Med+ body, medium acid, 14+ all, somewhat coarse tannins still - Med+, Long and palate less complex than the nose. (1110 views)
Tasted by red freddy on 9/14/2023 & rated 94 points: Received a partial bottle as a gift from a neighbor.
15.0% abv

Had a sip. Dark red on the pour with purple tinges around the edge; Opaque in the glass. Nose of Cherry and Blackberry, with alcohol hints on the nose. Full-bodied and hearty, with a robust explosion of flavor on the initial sip; followed by grippy tannins. "Sweetish" notes of cured meat and fruit on the palate. Peppery, but not as spicy as their Zinfandels. Nice acidity. Pleasant lingering finish with a little 'pucker.' Full of character; Smooth and refined. (1791 views)
Tasted by SineQuaNon on 6/26/2023 & rated 94 points: Remains a masterpiece and is equally stunning as five years ago! Wow and yum! (1928 views)
Tasted by wineismylife on 4/5/2023 & rated 93 points: WIML93

Tasted non blind.

Dark garnet color in the glass, clear looking throughout. Nose of talc, flowers, boysenberries, roasted meat and plums. Flavors of plums, raspberries and boysenberries. Medium acidity, medium to firm tannin, full bodied. Drink or hold. (1850 views)
Tasted by tward on 3/23/2023: This Very Good++ to Excellent wine needs a decant. The first night from Coravin it was a disjointed but good, seeming to show reduction. The following night the bottle was decanted for a few hours with some aggressive aeration. Lovely drinking and it continued to evolve for hours more. Rich style with roasted meats, plum, baked earth, deep notes. Good balance here for a big wine.

Tasted by wineismylife on 3/21/2023 & rated 92 points: WIML92

Tasted non blind.

Purple color in the glass, clear looking throughout. Nose of soapstone, currants, plums, saddle leather and a bit of thatch. Flavors of black raspberries, cherries and plums. Tart acidity, drying tannin, full bodied. Drink now. Maybe into the short term. (1913 views)
Tasted by mflesh on 1/23/2023 & rated 94 points: After initial cork pop, didn't think I was going to be given this one a 94. The nose and palate were quite a bit astringent and even pretty lean initially, almost having a savory beef au jus and mushroom characteristic with a huge youthful oak tannin curtain that really killed just about anything. After 30 minutes, this one settled to show roasted black and purple fruit, walnuts and almonds, pipe tobacco, finished with black pepper tannic baking spices. Dang. Would have thought this wine was an 89 without the 30 minutes which let it morph into something beautiful and yet so, so powerful. I need to buy a case of this stuff. Drink now with a healthy decant, or hold another 5-7 years as I definitely see room for improvement and development. (2092 views)
Tasted by Matt Scott on 1/7/2023: This is aging exceptionally well. Truly hitting its full, astonishing stride. Possibly the best Carlisle bottling ever - which is a statement I make with a ton of humility: this is the most amazing bottle of Syrah that I have experienced from Sonoma County (much less the Russian River Valley). The palate is pure perfection. The finish as well. Drink now - 2035. (2026 views)
Tasted by caroleandjay on 12/26/2022 & rated 95 points: 50 minute decant. Still young. Feel free to wait a year or 5.
This was my favorite Papa yet.
N of both red and dark fruit, licorice, hint of sourdough.
Palate is full of power, primarily black fruit, layered with tobacco, coffee and cocoa. long finish with high complexity and improved over a few hours. (1624 views)
Tasted by Oldmanzin on 12/24/2022 & rated 93 points: Dark fruit, underbrush, wonderful spice notes from the deftly use of oak. I think the 23% of whole clusters adds an earthy component that works well here. After a two hour decant, this wine was ready for action. The nose was bright and evolved. It has the Mike Officer silkiness that I love. This wine is in a good place for drinking. Good juice. (1448 views)
Tasted by RPerro on 12/17/2022 & rated 94 points: Brought to RingSide for our annual Christmas dinner with the crew. A huge, Syrah, black as night, and very full bodied. Flavors of blackberry compote, tobacco leaf and vanilla. The youngest of the wines, and the biggest by far. Drink now - 2031. (1443 views)
Tasted by short and confused on 11/22/2022: This is fun inky stuff. Despite how huge and alcoholic it is - it held some real interest. Great value at $38. (1612 views)
Tasted by ogres3 on 11/1/2022 & rated 93 points: Wasn't sure I was going to like this because it's still somewhat young and has been over the top in the past. This is hitting its stride and while not subtle, is developing some complexity. (1802 views)
Tasted by J-a-m-e-s on 11/1/2022: Hold for Vinni (1604 views)
Tasted by MMiazga on 10/29/2022 & rated 95 points: Drinking well, dark plum, blackberries, spice notes, chocolate. Quite smooth at this point. Easy to drink now; the potential still awaits. Hold at least 5 more years for it. (1362 views)
Tasted by Bryan49 on 7/18/2022 & rated 94 points: Awesome! Paired perfectly with Smoked Brisket. Blackberries, savory notes and licorice on the nose. Smooth, big body, lots of depth, resolved tannins. Bottle was gone to quickly! (2223 views)
Tasted by 3daywinereview.com on 6/8/2022 & rated 90 points: Better on Day 2 or 3!; 6/2/2022-7/5/2022 (3 Day Wine Review World Headquarters, Minneapolis, MN): Day 1: Dark purple. Dust, wood, spice, blackberries, plum and chocolate. Big style wine and on the pop and pour a bit over the top. Rating held at this point.
Day 1.25: Had to give this a good decant as a bit over the top on pop and pour. Blackberries, mild heat, spices, wood, dust and dark chocolate. Certainly not my preferred style and too big for me. Not flawed but just not into high octane Syrah. 88 points
Day 2: Wood, spice, blackberries, tar, black pepper, minerals and red currants. Better on day 2 and no heat like day 1. Still not a wine I am running out to get but solid. 90 points
Day 3: A little better but big style Syrah. Blackberries, black pepper, spice, tar, wood and dark chocolate. Medium plus finish. 90+ points
Recommendation: For sure needs more time in the cellar. Would not touch these until 2026 and beyond. (2621 views)
Tasted by iamandyc on 5/21/2022 & rated 94 points: Drank a few days ago and it was an awesome syrah. Lots of delicious fruit but tempered by great structure that provided tension and long finish. Typical syrah flavors and spice. Great QPR (2349 views)
Tasted by Hover low 64 on 4/5/2022 & rated 93 points: Absolutely ready now. So very good with complex flavors of blue and black fruit, smoke, and pepper which keep coming and coming after just a 30 minute decant to let the wine warm up after storage in the wine fridge. One more bottle to go and will hold for a year to see if it evolves into something even more spectacular. (2633 views)
Tasted by RobbieC on 3/4/2022: One hour decant. Blackberry, smoke, and beef flavors. Dry finish. I expected a bit more weight / viscosity. Well made and lovely. Alcohol shows a little but watching serving temp helped. Review from RDF58 on 2-23-2021 is spot on. (2527 views)
Tasted by hoservin on 1/19/2022 & rated 92 points: Aerated with a Vinturi by the glass. Aromas of blackberry, black plum, licorice and spice. Black fruit, licorice, spice and fine tannins on the palate. Lingering finish. Full bodied. Served with chili. (2671 views)

2016 Carlisle Syrah Papa's Block

From release newsletter:

2016 Russian River Valley “Papa’s Block” Syrah
Picked September 27th, this was another vineyard that excelled in this very strong vintage. To increase aromatics and to add a touch more structure, 22% of the fruit was not destemmed. Cold soaked for five days, the wine was fermented with several yeast strains that maximize aroma and mouthfeel. Twenty-three days on the skin. Aged in all French oak, 23% new. Bottled unfined and unfiltered.
Tasting Note: Very dark purple-ruby. Nearly opaque. A heady, intoxicating nose of blackberry, smoked meats, and herbs. Smells deliciously savory. Quite smooth and silky on entry, flavors of blackberry and blueberry are intertwined with lavender, violets, and spice cake. Gentle tannins emerge on the long and persistent finish. Totally compelling and a wine of great beauty and harmony. Already drinking well due to its impeccable balance, enjoy from release through 2028.

Syrah

Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
