The wine shows very spicy character, closer to 2014 with an equal amount of ripe red fruit, cherries, currants, the palate shows again the same balance, sour cherries, ripe red currant, nice balancing acidity, a few coffee and chocolate notes, deceptively lean, medium body and a rather medium to long very tasty finish (1247 views) | | | Tasted by Cailles on 4/3/2022 & rated 90 points: 10x 100 Pts with the Wine Advocate Team: That‘s a tough one. On one hand, this is so well structured, ultra fine and with a quite feather like texture, highly complex and precise. On the other hand it is just completely overripe and a bit too much, too intense. I didn‘t finish the glass. 90 pts for all the technical excellence outside the ripeness level. If you love that ripeness, then it maybe can be a 95 pts wine, which what Czerwinski certainly had in mind. But Australian Shiraz doesn‘t have to be overripe, so not a convincing call by him.
TN: Very intense, expressive nose with very ripe dark berries, mixed with coffee notes, licorice, and some hints of herbs. This is a far too ripe for my taste. On the palate there is a lot herbs, licorice, christmas spices, gingerbread, hints of coffee. The complexity and precision are off the charts. The structure is superb with so much finesse, lightness, super fine tannins and high, round acidity. Long and very balanced. Just far, far too ripe for my taste. Much riper than other RunRig vintages or other high-end Aussie Shiraz.
Decanting: This was sitting in the glass for some time. Open and singing right from the start. I don‘t think it needs a long decant. Asian 5 Spice, Christmas spices add further sweetness to the concentrated cherry, bramble berry and raspberry fruit. Additional spices of vanilla as well as intriguing char coal undertones. To round things off, minty high notes add a fresher angle. A fresh and crisp palate with an endless finish. Powerful yet weightless. I have scored this even higher in the past in a stand-alone setting, but in a this particular line-up it was more difficult to shine. Very consistent with hardly any changes noticeable aromatically between day 1, straight out of the bottle, and day 3. Intense, commanding yet detailed. Lots of vegetable, green bell pepper and green olives notes. Dark fruit core of bramble-berry but also showing bright, red accents. White crushed pepper, a bit of Asian spice and rooibos tea round off an incredibly varied aroma profile. Firm and muscular on the palate. Lots of acidity balanced by structural tannin. Also tense and dense and concentrated bursting of juicy, sweet and ripe fruit. Amazingly spicy, savoury on the palate as well with a finish that just won‘t stop - haven‘t tested but I think you would still taste the RunRig finish even after a lemon slice and tequila shot. Another beast from Torbreck- but a gentle one you want to cuddle up to. So in short, while still a bit wild overall and likely needing time to settle down a bit, pretty spectacular overall. Outstanding - well balanced, intense and complex wine - concentrated fruit and savoury notes on the palate, long finish, Suitable for bottle ageing - this wine has the structure (tannins/acidity) and density (fruit flavours) to age - primary notes and tannins may mellow, oak will integrate as tertiary/more savoury aromas develop further - excellent, (2847 views) | | | Tasted by Quiet Lion on 11/22/2019 & rated 95 points: Wine Advocate 1000-point dinner in NYC (Gabriel Kreuther): I drink a lot of Washington Syrah and I tend to find most Barossa Shiraz a bit simple. I have to say this was beautifully balanced on the palate with slightly sweet blackberry jam that didn't overpower. For my taste, though, there are domestic Syrahs at half the price that I prefer. Despite a dry winter during 2015, rains in January and March 2016, freshened the older vines and provided long, slow ripening periods in between, which led to a stand-out vintage with high quality fruit.
Tasting Note
Intense, lifted aromatics of dense blueberries and blackberries dark chocolate all come to the fore with an opulent profile of mulberry plum and five-spice.
A plush and velvety textured palate of red cherry and stone fruits, clove all interwoven with hints of dark chocolate. The complex layers and fruit characters continue to evolve in the glass with hints of ironstone, anise, blackberry and pepper all becoming more persistent in the finish.
This densely textured Run Rig will certainly reward those with patience.
