Community Tasting Notes (average 93.1 pts. and median of 93 pts. in 23 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Rixon on 3/3/2024 & rated 94 points: Samma noter. Utmärkt! (871 views)
Tasted by drwine2001 on 1/31/2024: A Taste of Serralunga Dinner-La Festa del Barolo 2024 (Locanda Verde, New York): Red. Soil driven nose. Medium weight and quite enveloping texture. Not at all fruit forward, but black cherry comes up along with mint. Fresh acidity and a tannic finish. (1316 views)
Tasted by Peristero on 1/21/2024 & rated 93 points: Probably a bit early to drink even after 6 hours of slow oxygenation. Extremely balanced and easy to drink with mostly savoury aromas of dried flowers and herbs but somewhat muted. (1081 views)
Tasted by Rixon on 8/27/2023 & rated 94 points: Röd och relativt tät. (1473 views)
Tasted by kenv on 2/21/2023 & rated 94 points: Baudana Baudana Dinner with Giuseppe Vaira (Popina, 127 Columbia St, Brooklyn, NY): The first bottle was flawed with quite a bit of acetone in the nose and mouth. An off bottle. Giuseppe and Tom agreed, so Giuseppe found the other bottle, which was sound.
Bottle 2: Big rich nose of red fruit and licorice. Lovely and soft in the mouth, but with good structure underneath. Should drink well for at least 15 years. (1973 views)
Tasted by Bordeaux-OH-OH! on 12/26/2022: To Seth Christmas 2022. (1728 views)
Tasted by MAXIMUM SATISFACTION on 7/22/2022 & rated 94 points: Decanted a few hours and surprisingly approachable now. Still acid sears and tannins stick but the fruit shines through. Dried cherries, strawberry, truffle, mint and mineral. Needs time but approaching the moment (maybe 2-3 more years if you like young Barolo). (2239 views)
Tasted by connorpksmith on 4/6/2022 & rated 92 points: At times this sang with dark fruits and aromas of tobacco and rose petals and berries, but most of the time the tannins overwhelmed everything. Might be in a shutdown phase now. Was disappointed this didn’t match what I’ve come to love from other Vajra bottlings (2447 views)
Tasted by Sieegs on 11/27/2021 & rated 93 points: Young, but has great bones. (2476 views)
Tasted by ShakinSwedens on 8/25/2021: I absolutely adore this Barolo. The 15 remains approachable- no signs of closing down. Super! (2544 views)
Tasted by fussyeater on 7/7/2021 & rated 93 points: BTG –this is darker in colour and the nose reveals savoury red fruits but after some time wild herbs as well. On the palette there is very savoury concentrated fruit in particular sour cherries. Approachable now but with Serralunga power and underlying structure to age, although tannins are fine and do not stick out or overwhelm. If you have a case, I would pop open a bottle now as no reason to wait. (2575 views)
Tasted by murkybird on 3/16/2021 & rated 92 points: Surprisingly balanced. Wasn’t sure if I would get something hot and fruity based on the vintage or something brooding and tannic. Nice clarity of fruit, good structure, but still some pleasure in drinking- particularly with some braised beef. (2752 views)
Tasted by MAXIMUM SATISFACTION on 2/26/2021 & rated 95 points: It’s good but nowhere near as approachable as other 15’s have been young. High acid with tart/sour red fruit and mineral night one. Come the second night deeper red/dark/plumy fruit emerges with classic tar/roses and a really nice spearmint element. In ten years this will be lights out. (2646 views)
Tasted by KeithAkers on 2/26/2020 & rated 93 points: 2020 Tre Biccheri (Bridgeport arts center, Chicago IL): Nose: The nose is deep and layered with dark red cherries, raspberries, sour red berries, licorice, tar, violets, iodine, earth, and some tobacco notes.

Taste: The feel is Full bodied with tart, high acidity and chewy, high tannins. There is a lot of youth to the structure with dark red cherries, raspberries, sour red berries, licorice, tar, violets, and earth tones.

Overall: This should be a complete knockout in another 5+ years. There is a ton to like right now and it will certainly reward patience. (2510 views)
Tasted by TannicBeast on 1/22/2020 & rated 94 points: A delicious but youthful Barolo from a historic, west-facing MGA vineyard near Serralunga d'Alba. Clean, complex, with med (+) ripe red cherry, ripe plum, roses, medicinal herbs, espresso and a fair amount of oak spice. Dry, but rich with fruit. Med (+) acidity, pronounced but ripe tannins, high alcohol (14%). Full-bodied, generous yet already very well balanced, with intense flavors and a long, savory finish. More approachable now than the Cerretta, but perhaps even more age-worthy. (3296 views)
Tasted by Eric Guido on 8/27/2019 & rated 95 points: Here I found floral-inspired black cherry, hints of moist earth, dark violet florals, licorice, animal musk and crushed stone. On the palate, soft, feminine textures gave way to zesty red and black berries, with brisk acids and tannins tugging at the senses while saline-minerals saturated all that they touched. The finish was long yet structured, with drying red fruits, savory spice and minerals penetrating the senses--but through it all, focused with amazing precision. The Baudana has a long life ahead of it. (4744 views)
Tasted by viniferatu on 8/21/2019: Explosive and exotic nose. Just jam packed with fruit, spice and flowers. Just a touch of a roasted and toasted quality, which melds nicely with its classic tar and rose notes. Very textured and deep on the palate. Tons of tannin and incredible length. This is striking and powerful. It needs 10+ years though. Giuseppe Vaira says "iron oxide in the soil is like a distortion pedal" and this young and noisy Serralunga seems to illustrate this idea perfectly. With time, will clear and precise notes emerge? I hope so. (2734 views)
Tasted by Drankard on 6/1/2019 & rated 97 points: I thought this wine was the star of the 2015 Vajra lineup. Lighter in color than the BdV and more elegant. Wonderful freshness and persistence from start to finish. A pretty wine that will make its way into my cellar. Tasted twice. (3104 views)
Tasted by cct on 5/24/2019 & rated 93 points: With Isidoro

Ripe and red fruited, with rose and balsamic notes. Ripe and a little broader, than the previous Baroli. Sappy and expansive, but it lacks a little lift and freshness to make it complete for me. TM liked it more than I. (2713 views)
Tasted by MC2 Wines on 11/23/2018: Here we go atruffling... (aka Piedmont... and Veneto); 11/16/2018-11/30/2018 (Alba, Guarene, Modena, Barolo, La Morra, Lake Garda .....): Also a very pretty wine. Officially on the divide which should be for the more powerful, masculine style wines, but I thought there was a certain elegance here as well. Lots of very nice fruit. Tannin well balanced. Nice to try and very enjoyable. Still a young wine so give it more time. (3097 views)

Luigi Baudana

Producer Website
Luigi Baudana is one of the last garagiste wineries of Serralunga d'Alba.
4 hectares are farmed.
4 wines are produced:
Barolo Baudana: single vineyard, south-west exposure, clay soils and "arenarie di Diano", approx. 300 cases made per year.
Barolo Cerretta: single vineyard, south-east exposure, white calcareous marls. approx. 300 cases made per year.
Both single vineyards were listed in the Renato Ratti chart of Barolo.
Starting with 2005 vintage, also a "Barolo di Serralunga d'Alba" is produced, from the younger vines (3-400 cases).
Finally, a white field blend called Langhe Bianco Dragon completes the production (production unknown).
Curiosities:
-the winery is currently run by the Vajra family of G.D. Vajra together with Luigi and Fiorina Baudana.
-wines before 2004 were bottled by hand and by gravity. Wines after 2005 vintage are bottled by machine.

Source: VinConnect (VinConnect.com)
Luigi Baudana is one of the last garagiste estates still operating in the Langhe region. It is also the smallest of all the VinConnect Piemontese wineries.

The estate is a mere 4 hectares in size (~10 acres), but all the vineyards are held in the highest hierarchy of Barolo vineyards, being listed both in the Lorenzo Fantini “Monografia sulla Viticultura ed Enologia in Provincia di Cuneo” (1879) and in Renato Ratti’s “Carta del Barolo” from the early 1970s.

Ceretta may well be the better know cru. Located on the east slope of Serralunga d’Alba, this vineyard has a unique soil composition, made of a very white, calcareous topsoil and a deeper layer of red clay beneath. Wines from Ceretta are all about class and broad intensity.

Baudana, on the other hand, is one of the best-kept secrets among Barolo aficionados. Iconic winemaker Franco Fiorina used to select fruit of Baudana for his highly acclaimed Barolos, until the late 1980s. Today, only three single-vineyard Barolos are released from this cru, and the Luigi Baudana may well be the only one to be exported to the U.S.

It would be enough to mention that Baudana is the name of the vineyard, of the village and of Luigi and Fiorina’s family, to express how deep the roots and how important the family legacy to this very unique place!

In 2009, Francesca, Isidoro and Guiseppe, the three children of famed Aldo and Milena Vajra of G.D Vajra, joined the Baudana family to bring new energies and an uncompromised respect to this story.

Nebbiolo

Nebbiolo is a red grape indigenous to the Piedmont region of Italy in the Northwest. The grape can also be found in other parts of the world, though they are not as respected.

Nebbiolo is often considered the "king of red wines," as it is the grape of the famed wines of Barolo DOCG, Barbaresco DOCG, and Roero DOCG. It is known for high tannins and acidity, but with a distinct finesse. When grown on clay, Nebbiolo can be very powerful, tannic, and require long aging periods to reach its full potential. When grown on sand, the grape exhibits a more approachable body with more elegant fruit and less tannins, but still has high aging potential.

"Nebbiolo" is named for the Italian word, "nebbia", which means "fog", in Italian and rightfully so since there is generally a lot of fog in the foothills of Piedmont during harvest.

Nebbiolo is a late-ripening variety that does best in a continental climate that boasts moderate summers and long autumns. In Piedmont, Nebbiolo is normally harvested in October.

Barolo

Regional History:
The wines of Piedmont are noted as far back as Pliny's Natural History. Due to geographic and political isolation, Piedmont was without a natural port for most of its history, which made exportation treacherous and expensive. This left the Piedmontese with little incentive to expand production. Sixteenth-century records show a mere 14% of the Bassa Langa under vine -- most of that low-lying and farmed polyculturally. In the nineteenth century the Marchesa Falletti, a frenchwoman by birth, brought eonologist Louis Oudart from Champagne to create the first dry wines in Piemonte. Along with work in experimental vineyards at Castello Grinzane conducted by Camilo Cavour -- later Conte di Cavour, leader of the Risorgimento and first Prime Minister of Italy -- this was the birth of modern wine in the Piedmont. At the heart of the region and her reputation are Alba and the Langhe Hills. This series of weathered outcroppings south of the Tanaro River is of maritime origin and composed mainly of limestone, sand and clay, known as terra bianca. In these soils -located mainly around the towns of Barolo and Barbaresco -- the ancient allobrogica, now Nebbiolo, achieves its renowned fineness and power.
