Community Tasting Notes (average 87.4 pts. and median of 87 pts. in 5 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Adonisd1956 on 3/11/2011 & rated 89 points: Garnet in color, tight nose, dusty earth, cherry, really drying tannins, which I kind of like, not much fruit on the palate. This is my last bottle. Would love to revisit in a couple more years. (1654 views)
Tasted by gbm on 11/17/2008 & rated 88 points: Color: Garnet, purple. Nose: Floral, cedar - very different from the last bottle, in a good way. Still the heat, but it fits better. Taste: Moderate tannins, still grapey, a little sweet. Overall: Still a very nice wine. Worth a try, but not a case. Definitely a good restaurant choice if you are only having a glass.  Tasted by gbm on 9/28/2008 & rated 86 points: Deep garnet color. Very earthy nose - maybe some pencil lead - but you could smell the alcohol. Taste - Grapey, moderately strong tannins (more than I like, but about average for a Merlot in my recent, limited experience), and a little too much heat. Nice finish, though nothing special. Overall a decent Merlot. (4/5+10/15+16/20+6/10) (1723 views)
Tasted by Adonisd1956 on 5/3/2008 & rated 87 points: Lots fruit upfront, very dusty, earthy first impression, looking forward to trying again after it breathes and opens up. (1808 views)

Merlot

Merlot is a dark blue–colored wine grape variety, that is used as both a blending grape and for varietal wines. The name Merlot is thought to be a diminutive of merle, the French name for the blackbird, probably a reference to the color of the grape. Its softness and "fleshiness", combined with its earlier ripening, makes Merlot a popular grape for blending with the sterner, later-ripening Cabernet Sauvignon, which tends to be higher in tannin.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson

Napa / Sonoma

SONOMA: The Yorkville Highlands AVA, approved in 1998, is located in the southwestern corner of Mendocino County, between Sonoma County's Alexander Valley to the South and Mendocino County!s Anderson Valley to the North. The region is 25 miles long, roughly in the shape of rectangle and bisected by Highway 128 which runs the length of the AVA. The region!s terrain is hilly and forested, with elevations ranging from 1,078 to 2,442 feet above sea level.
The distinguishing features of the Yorkville Highlands AVA are rocky soils with a high gravel content and the climate, which is cooler than Alexander Valley but warmer than Anderson Valley, and significantly cooler at night than the surrounding areas.

Carneros

Straddles the southern ends of Napa & Sonoma Counties.
