Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 87.1 pts. and median of 88 pts. in 90 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by HitAnyKey on 4/25/2015 & rated 89 points: This wine just keeps getting better, and going to be sad when we finish the last bottles. Love the nose and the dark fruity spice notes it provides. A true to character PS of dark blueberry and mild spice. Fully and perfectly integrated at this point, with mild tannins. Does not need decanting, but a little air before drinking is still a good idea. (4838 views)
Tasted by Zinlady on 12/17/2014 & rated 90 points: popped and poured. Nice. Medium bodied. Fruit a bit muted. Mellowed by its age. Had with cheese and fruit. (5112 views)
Tasted by Wicked Panda on 9/2/2013 & rated 88 points: Cellared in the open. Still turned out well. Some jam, some spice. Tannins were gentle. Overall, turned out to be a pretty good bottle. (6400 views)
Tasted by wtianseter on 3/31/2012 & rated 87 points: This wine was all about trueness to the grape. Color, nose and taste all screamed Petit Sirah. Well made and tasty. Dark Black-blue plum. Nose with fruit and earth. Taste leads with lots of grape and a touch of Oak; smooth and finishes with a solid but not overpowering Petit Sirah bite. (8194 views)
Tasted by winethoughtsfromT on 1/22/2012 & rated 87 points: pleasantly surprised for that price. A bit light in body but nicely made for under $10 and I say that about very few wines in that price category.

A few things going on in the nose. Hint of oak. Haven't tried Concannon anything in many years. Seem to be doing a nice job in the lower end of things. I would buy again. (8193 views)
Tasted by daver852 on 11/19/2011 & rated 89 points: Thought this was quite nice. Strong nose, but not much fruit in it; more like brambles, cut grass and peppers. Nice dark color, as one would expect from a Petite Sirah. Lots of dark fruit, blackberries, blueberries, and spicy notes. A little short on the finish. Did not detect the harshness others have mentioned. This is ready to drink and will hold for several years. All in all, a nice representation of this varietal and very reasonably priced. Not a stunner, but a well-crafted and tasty wine. Good value. (4972 views)
Tasted by Gunman on 6/16/2011: Opened for grilled tri-tips (sirloin roast). Decanted about an hour beforehand to help take a bitter edge off. Popular with the cheese plate as well as the seasoned beef. Good stuff. (5280 views)
Tasted by Gunman on 12/19/2010 & rated 85 points: Not as drinkable as prior PS from Concannon. Not sure what role the 1.5L format played in that. Decanted to a large glass pitcher to try to take the edge of a bitterness from pop and pour. Seemed to open up some, but never really found its legs. Dark fruit and some earth -- no detailed notes. Served it at a party, so the entire bottle was emptied. Would have liked to see what an extra 12-24 hours of air would do for this. (4816 views)
Tasted by jjlobi on 10/26/2010 & rated 86 points: Softened a lot on the 2nd day. Prior to that it seemed a bit rough, smoothed out quite a bit later. (4421 views)
Tasted by HitAnyKey on 9/11/2010 & rated 89 points: Wonderful wine, brought to a BBQ. Opened & poured through vinturi into glasses. Very smooth and balanced, lots of blueberries on the nose & palate. (4731 views)
Tasted by iByron on 7/3/2010 & rated 82 points: Nice enough for the price, especially for a magnum on sale. Big hit with cookout fare. Drink now and share. (5638 views)
Tasted by kaptainreboot on 4/30/2010 & rated 86 points: Was very harsh on day one but smoothed out & much better on day 2 while still retaining the fruityness & good tannins. (5410 views)
 Tasted by h2o on 4/27/2010 & rated 88 points: with venison/blueberry sauce (5430 views)
Tasted by PackerJon on 3/27/2010 & rated 85 points: Nothing profound here, but a nice enough wine for the price. (5529 views)
Tasted by cortisj2 on 3/11/2010 & rated 87 points: Drank with some friends with pizza. a nice value wine. medium purple colored. plums on the nose and some earth. medium+ body, good tannins. blueberry jam, some white pepper and earthyness. nice toasty notes and some good chocolate on the finish. (5445 views)
Tasted by nytiger on 3/9/2010 flawed bottle: not impressive (5476 views)
Tasted by pmarlo on 3/4/2010 & rated 89 points: Purple stained cork but not as dark as some syrahs I've opened. This is the third bottle of this producer I've opened and it seems to have returned to better form than the last. Possible vintage variation. It feels like there are some good tannins in this wine and it was pretty decent for it's price point. More fruit in this than last time as well. I can see this wine being one of the better values in budget table wines. right now, some budget malbec from Alamos are one of my go to table wines, but this has joined the ranks. Recommended. I would be interested in how it would age as well. Had a few producers of petite syrah, and this one has been my favorite. (1742 views)
Tasted by eyeiser on 1/24/2010 & rated 85 points: Nice berry flavor. Dry finish. Very good wine. (5835 views)
Tasted by jwilkey on 12/28/2009 & rated 86 points: Though still a great value, this 2005 was a bit of a dissapointment as I had recently tasted the 2002, which was superior. Nevertheless, if you enjoy Pitite Sirah, this wonderful wine from Cancannon will not disapoint you. (5907 views)
Tasted by sichuanpeppercorn on 12/2/2009 & rated 87 points: Big flavor, still had good tannin, stands up well to various foods. (6201 views)
Tasted by h2o on 12/1/2009 & rated 89 points: really good with cassoulet (6225 views)
Tasted by crowino on 11/22/2009 & rated 86 points: Mid weight. Softish, good fruit, light tannins and acid. (6195 views)
Tasted by grdnbrrtt on 10/16/2009 & rated 84 points: Not sure about the pairing this time; a steak might have been better. A dry, deep berry flavor. (6280 views)
Tasted by GregGH on 10/2/2009 & rated 88 points: drink few PS ( remember Madrigal as being a huge grippy bottle - but then it was 3 times the average street price and a lucky find for us in Ont as it was being cleared out. Lets see how this opens up over the next 24 hours - will get a few more if still available at LCBO. (6494 views)
Tasted by Epic Tale on 9/21/2009 & rated 77 points: color: purple crossed with red velvet; nose: faint raspberries and some musty vanilla; taste: light-medium mouthfeel tasting initially of red fruit, non-descript and hollow mid-palate that transitions to sour cherry finish backed by chalky tannins; overall: meh -- a dull, disappointing package with no pop or strong point -- mediocre wine lacking the advertised "full-bodied richness" and "silky finish", which I would not buy again (6508 views)

Concannon Vineyard

Producer website

Concannon Vineyards was founded in 1883 in Livermore, California and is a registered historical site. They were the first to bottle a varietal petite sirah in 1961. Owned by conglomerate The Wine Group, the Concannon family, including patriarch Jim Concannon, is still involved in running the winery, which produces several tens of thousands of cases a year.

2005 Concannon Vineyard Petite Sirah Limited Release

Concannon's entry level petite sirah. The designation "Limited Release" is meaningless, and should not be confused with their "reserve" or "heritage" bottlings. Extremely heavy bottle with moulded logo.

Petite Sirah

Varietal character (Appellation America) | P.S. I Love You: A Petite Sirah Advocacy Organization

Petite Sirah is a variety of red wine grape grown in France, California, Israel and Australia. Recently, wineries located in Washington State's Yakima Valley, Maryland, Arizona, West Virginia, Mexico, Chile's Colchagua Valley and Maipo Valley, and Ontario's Niagara Peninsula have also produced wines from Petite Sirah grapes. Though developed in France, it is nearly extinct there as of 2002, hanging on in limited plantings in the Isère and Ardêche regions of the Rhône Valley and in Palette, a tiny appellation in Provence. It is the main grape known in the US and Israel as Petite Sirah with over 90% of the California plantings labeled "Petite Sirah" being Durif grapes; the US Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms recognizes "Durif" and "Petite Sirah" as interchangeable synonyms referring to the same grape. The grape originated as a cross of Syrah pollen germinating a Peloursin plant. On some occasions, Peloursin and Syrah vines may be called Petite Sirah, usually because the varieties are extremely difficult to distinguish in old age.

The 'petite' in the name of this grape refers to the size of its berries and not the vine, which is particularly vigorous. The leaves are large with a bright green upper surface and paler green lower surface. The grape forms tightly packed clusters that can be susceptible to rotting in rainy environments. The small berries creates a high skin to juice ratio which can produce very tannic wines if the juice goes through an extended maceration period. In the presence of new oak barrels the wine can develop an aroma of melted chocolate.

Petite Sirah produces dark, inky colored wines that are relatively acidic with firm texture and mouth feel. The bouquet has herbal and black pepper overtones, with plum and blackberry flavors on the palate. Compared to Syrah, the wine is noticeably more dark and purplish in color. The wines are very tannic with aging ability that can eclipse 20 years in the bottle.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
