Tasted by RKatzDO on 10/21/2023: Wow. Out of a 375 I forgot I had. Smells and tastes like Gangloff Sereine Noir. Stunning balance of garrigue, fruit and acid. Wish I had more. (285 views)
Tasted by Joshvoulters on 9/28/2023 & rated 93 points: Condrieu and Cote Rotie (Must & Lees, N1): Beautifully saturated red and purple fruit, violets, herbs and rich earth. An undercurrent of savoury depth but this is about elegance above all else. A sense of freshness and fine balance between the fruit, aromatics and oak. I just loved the poise of this wine. Fantastic. (572 views)
Tasted by oenanthe on 9/28/2023 & rated 93 points: Condrieu and Cote Rotie; 9/28/2023-10/28/2023 (Must and Lees, N1): Fabulous. Tapenade, mushroom, pepper, spice, totally on song and a splendid bottle. Gorgeous cool fruit, smoked meat and tomato paste. Second favourite wine of the night, close behind the Gangloff. Buy it each year, hide it away for 15 years, reap the benefit. Drink the 2007 now for a giddy experience. (453 views)
Tasted by NickA on 9/28/2023 & rated 92 points: Condrieus and Côte-Rôties of North London (Must & Lees): An attractive nose, with an intriguing combination of bright fruit and ash. Dry and austere on the palate, lots of grippy red fruit. I liked this, and suspect it's at peak, but wanted a bit more substance. The group liked it even more, and voted it #2 red tonight - ahead of the Jamet from the same vintage! (579 views)
Tasted by Jamieson12o on 9/28/2023 & rated 95 points: TWS North London; Cote Rotie and Condrieu at Must & Lees (Must & Lees, N1): This is in a great place right now; loads of fruit (hovering between red and black) left, showing very generously. Oak and those classic savoury cote rotie notes are too, but everything's in lovely balance. Tannins are resolved; this must be at or very near its peak. (358 views)
Tasted by beatles on 11/24/2022 & rated 91 points: Very nice, forward, fruity, local, typical; refreshing even. Certainly a cote-rôtie, very much a 2007, fruit driven, drinkability galore. Will keep. maybe not improve.

Tasted by pbaek on 5/7/2022: I’m drinking these bottles too fast admittedly. The fruit is somewhat ripe, but still cool and blue and underneath the fruit and crushed flowers there is iron and stones in spades. STGT wine that’s perhaps another 5 years from peak. (648 views)
Tasted by kuumies on 10/3/2021: Savory and a bit on the wild side on the nose with plenty of high pitch red fruit and some very attractive floral and bouillon notes. Very autumnal with a wet leaf thing going on. Elegant, complex and most classic. On the palate at most medium-bodied (12.5 % ABV) and on the elegant side. Not high on tannins but still comes off as grippy. Young but delicious, clearly very well made and in a wonderful style. (935 views)
Tasted by forceberry on 10/2/2021 & rated 92 points: The wine is made of mainly Serine clone sourced from multiple lieux-dits in Côte-Rôtie with a tine amount of co-planted Viognier. Fermented spontaneously with indigenous yeasts. Macerated with the skins for 3-4 weeks, after which the wine is aged for 2 years in 228-liter oak pièces (approximately 10-15% new). 12,5% alcohol. Tasted blind in a flight of 2007 Cornas, Côte-Rôtie and Hermitage.

Deep, dark and moderately opaque blackish-red color with a faint, evolved pomegranate hue. Ripe, sweetish and quite fragrant nose with aromas of ripe blackcurrants, some perfumed notes of violets, a little bit of blueberry-driven primary fruit, light lifted notes of VA and floral bretty spice, a spicy hint of crushed peppercorns and a touch of olive. Quite thoroughly classic Northern Rhône Syrah nose with no obvious oak aromatics. The wine is clean, juicy and quite youthful on the palate with a sleek medium body and bright, dry flavors of blackberries and crunchy crowberries, some autumnal notes of damp leaves, light spicy notes of crushed peppercorns, a little bit of floral lift, savory hints of game and blood and a sweet touch of blueberries. The structure relies mostly on the fresh, high acidity rather than on the quite friendly and well-manicured medium tannins. The finish is long, dry and juicy with rather gentle tannic grip and fresh, crunchy flavors of crowberries and ripe bilberries, some floral notes of violets, light spicy nuances of crushed peppercorns, an autumnal hint of damp leaves and a zesty touch of lifted bretty spice.

A very lovely, fresh and wonderfully poised Syrah that I correctly identified as Côte-Rôtie, based on the lighter and more Burgundian style of the wine compared to the other two, more burly wines (Yann Chave hermitage, Clape Cornas). The appearance here seemed relatively evolved, but on the palate the wine was wonderfully fresh and youthful, at times showing almost primary qualities in its juicy, dark-berry driven flavors. Unlike the other two wines, which relied more on heft and quite prominent tannins, this wine was all about finesse and bright acidity, making the wine feel noticeably more "cool climate" in comparison. Drinking wonderfully now, but is still going to have a lot of room for further evolution. A delight. Recommended. (1449 views)
Tasted by 2caveman on 3/28/2020 & rated 84 points: This wine had a varietal feature in spades that I've never liked. On the nose and palate there's a profound beef blood feature that really diminished..... obliterated... my pleasure in this wine. My wife did not share the impression so perhaps others will enjoy-- it's otherwise balanced and big (1401 views)
Tasted by pbaek on 3/24/2020: Still youthful, this is strict and vertical, light and airy, dark-fruited with notes of flowers, iron and broth. Good acidity, fresh. Tannins almost fully resolved. Keep. (1285 views)
Tasted by gazinho on 1/12/2019 & rated 91 points: As delicious as ever - excellent, well integrated wine in perfect condition.
Won't go any further, which is fortunate since we're down to the last bottle. (1580 views)
Tasted by Burgundy Al on 1/5/2019 & rated 89 points: Another Saturday at Chevalier...Mostly Blind Rhone Varietals (Chevalier Fine Wines - Chicago IL): Tasted double blind. Black cherry with anise and black pepper hints. Bright and clearly showing Old World character. Good weight and length, with better balance. (2298 views)
Tasted by jmcmchi on 9/23/2018 & rated 87 points: A village wine. Nice enough, mostly sage and herbs, but acidity does not feel as if it will ever come into balance.

From .375. Bought on close out, but even at that price very poor QPR. Maybe I am being generous with the rating? (1456 views)
Tasted by pbaek on 4/18/2018: Gorgeous Côte Rotie. Floral, airy fruit, en danseuse, all about finesse and elegance. Notes of tea and broth, bright acidity. Has a wild, animal side as as well. I love this. (1499 views)
Tasted by gazinho on 6/11/2017 & rated 91 points: Deserves a decent decant & airing.
Deep lustrous garnet in colour.
Heady dark red fruit in aroma; blackberry, blackcurrant, morello cherry, chocolate too!
Salty minerality, medium to high acidity that brings freshness.
Strawberry on the palate, along with the other fruits and herbal notes.
Tannins more present on the lengthy finish. (2074 views)
Tasted by Italiana on 2/26/2017: Clear dark red. Not giving off much in the aroma department. Spicy on the palate, but despite a lovely medium heft, not much of interest drinking it alone. Perhaps better with food. This bottle not worth the price. Old and tired? Flawed? Defnitely disappointing. (1851 views)
Tasted by linuhage on 1/10/2016 & rated 93 points: Fin doft med mycket vitpeppar, kryddor och blommor. Slankt och svalt men med bra intensitet och längd. Precis vår stil! (2855 views)
Tasted by Tavastgatan on 8/14/2015 & rated 90 points: @Fred_Lund: Used to import Clusel-Roch. This is my last bottle. Elegance and charm. Cote-Rôtie's answer to Michel Lafarge. (3221 views)
Tasted by strickt01 on 6/4/2015 & rated 86 points: Very restrained on the nose to begin with, and never really blossomed. Sadly the same was true for the palate which only hinted at some spice-laden flavours. I could generously describe this as elegant but it would more accurately be described as unfulfilling. (2878 views)
Tasted by aridan on 9/21/2014 & rated 89 points: Great food wine. Nice activity that cuts through. Long and focused. Blackcurrant. No match for the higher-end Clusel, but stands well. (2529 views)
Tasted by aridan on 5/23/2014 & rated 90 points: Excellent food wine. Balanced. Long tasting. Medium body. Black currant. Perfect with duck. (2610 views)
Tasted by Herschel Krustofski on 11/18/2013 & rated 87 points: [J&B Rhone tasting] ok, but nowhere near Rostaing (2198 views)
Tasted by skifree on 3/11/2013 & rated 88 points: Nice color, texture, and mouth feel. Very distinct green olive and herb the first night, but better when paired with meat balls the second night. Acidity made it pair well, and had more classic dark fruit flavors. From a 375 ml. (2446 views)
Tasted by dr g on 2/22/2013 & rated 92 points: very nice at this stage, the grandes places was still closed i loved this fine wine (2409 views)

(COTE ROTIE Clusel Roch) Rhone Dear Friends, Here's an impressive wine at a very fair price for the genre. We previously offered the 2006 version of Clusel Roch Cote Rotie (to a feeding frenzy of sorts) and the 2007 has now been released. I know this sounds like retailer-speak but...wow. In my verbose opinion, this is the finest regular bottling from Clusel Roch in a long time. The 2006 is certainly excellent for its velveteen red fruit impression and sense of place but the 2007 has a nervous mineral structure that is like elegant rock mixed with the same weave of divine fruit. From a terroir-chase perspective, this wine hits the bulls-eye and it reflects its pedigree and hillside in a beautiful way. It should age for a number of years as well. Compared to Syrah grown anywhere else, this example of Clusel Roch reminds us why the Northern Rhone is unmatched for transparent and medium weight reflection of the varietal (not to mention a gorgeous bouquet of perfumed, smoky fruit that draws the taster in like a ravenous spider to its web)... HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for perfumed and structured low-alcohol Syrah that could only come from this western ridge above the Rhone River. ONE SMALL SHIPMENT ONLY at this price (about the same as in France). VERY HARD TO FIND outside of Europe: 2007 Clusel Roch Cote Rotie ...oh yeah, a few of you may be interested in this as well... 2007 Clusel Roch Cote Rotie "Les Grandes Places" EXTREMELY LIMITED (less than 10 cases for the entire US market) Thank you, Jon Rimmerman Garagiste Seattle, WA Rhone7108 Rhone7109

Founded by René Clusel in 1969, the winery is now run by his son, Gilbert. In 1989 the domaine changed its name to Domaine Clusel-Roch, borrowing the name of Gilbert's wife, Brigitte Roch, and giving the newer, larger winery its own identity.

Today the property is still tiny: just 3.5 hectares in Côte Rôtie and just half a hectare in Condrieu. The vines are planted on terraces along the Côte Rôtie, with two wooden stakes tied above each vine to help protect against the region's occasionally howling winds. Having officially converted to organic farming practices in 2002, most work in the vineyards is done manually, without the use of any chemical fertilizers.

In order to even better express the tradition of the vineyard, the domaine only uses vines from their own selection of Syrah plantings, which are grafted in their own small nursery. According to Gilbert, these traditional Ampius vines are less productive and give more complex aromas than available modern selections. When harvest time comes, the grapes are manually selected, and fermented with indigenous yeasts, furthering the site purity in each wine.

With annual production hovering at about 1250 cases per year, Domaine Clusel-Roch is able to focus all their attention on each aspect of the winemaking, from vine to bottle, and it shows!

Syrah

Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.

Northern Rhône

Guide to the wines and appellations of the Northern Rhone Valley -

The Rhône Valley/Le Vins de la Vallée du Rhône (Comité Interprofession des vins AOC Côtes et vallée du Rhône)

Regional History:
Phocaean Greeks established viticulture in the Rhone as far back as 600 BC, but until the 14th century the wines were not seen outside the region. The establishment of the Avignonese Papacy (1305-1377) brought fame to the region's wine-so much so that their Burgundian neighbors to the north banned wines from the Rhone in 1446, a measure that effectively cut off trade with England and other Northern European markets for over 200 years. Stretching southward from Lyon to just south of Avignon, the Rhone produces a wide variety of wines, with the appellations north of Valence producing the least (in volume), and the towns south of Montelimar producing prodigious amounts. As in other regions, the most interesting wines come from small farms. Saint-Joseph, in the northern Rhone, extends for some distance between Condrieu in the north to Saint-Peray in the south. The reds are made from Syrah and the rare whites from Marsanne and Roussanne, and Viognier.

Guide to Cote Rotie - Read about the Northern Rhone Valley

• The Appellation cover three communes - Saint-Cyr-sur-Rhône, Ampuis and Tupin-Semons - on the right Rhône river bank, within the Rhône "département".

• Soils : In the northern part of the vineyard, the Côte Brune, consists of extremely steep, terraced slopes of ferruginous mica schists which are covered with schist sand (arzel). The Côte Blonde has a varied geology with gneiss and granite predominating at the most southern side of the appellation.

• Climate : tempered continental. Dry, hot summers and frequent rainfalls during the other seasons. History : one of the oldest vineyards in France, first developed by the Romans. It is said that during the Middle Ages, "The Seigneur de Maugiron" bequeathed a hillside to each of his daughters, one was brunette and the other fair. Thus, were born the names of "Côte Brune" and "Côte Blonde".

• Area planted : 230 hectares (568 acres), for an annual production of 8,400 hectoliters (93,333 cases). Authorized maximum yield is 40 hectoliters/hectare (2,3 US tons/acre).

• Grape Varieties : Syrah (80% minimum). An addition of up to 20% of Viognier grapes in the crop is allowed.
