Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 95.4 pts. and median of 96 pts. in 39 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Jeremy Holmes on 4/3/2024: Incredibly youthful, but also quite giving in its own way. The nose draws you in with white peach and citrus, and notes of flint, fennel tops and seaspray. The palate is full, layered and so deep and precise. It has awesome presence and a finish that is focussed and oozes minerality. Wonderful length. (317 views)
Tasted by llink on 2/19/2023 & rated 96 points: Chablis Tasting at a collector's home (San Mateo, CA): Decanted for 3 hours, served blind in a flight of 08/12 Les Clos, Wine E. My 1st rank, groups 1st rank. Pale yellow. This is a Raveneau nose, waxy, some funk, sea breeze, iodine, lemon and sage spice. Slightly exotic, with a rich deep palate that is a touch ripe but oozes juicy fruit on the long chalky finish. (1325 views)
Tasted by BenBlu on 10/29/2022 & rated 96 points: A mighty performance by this great vintage for Clos. Started off painfully mineral with typical Chablis crushed oyster shell. Decanted in a wide decanter and served in Zalto Burg once it drew enough air it gained noticeably in stature, depth and blossomed into a remarkably ample wine with salinity but also waxiness. Terrific and there is probably the potential to add 1-2 points in 5 - 10 years which is when this should really be at its apax. Of the Clos I had I think this is second only to the 2010 and a touch ahead of 2012, but while the 2010 is already near proper prime the 08 might have time on its side… (1584 views)
Tasted by BenBlu on 11/19/2021 & rated 96 points: Raveneau Grand Cru with Maxime Raveneau (110 Taillevent London): During Raveneau dinner with Maxime Raveneau sampling all three GCs 12/10/08/05 at 110 Taillevent London. No formal notes taken. This wine has come a long way since I last had it 3 years ago (when it was painfully tight for my taste), now it has opened up and is the real deal - for me marginally better than the also great Blanchot, and probably my 2nd WOTN if I had to pick (after Clos 10). Very impressive stuff indeed! (2555 views)
Tasted by fcxj on 9/23/2021 & rated 96 points: Wonderful tension and acidity. Peak of drinking window. (2346 views)
Tasted by bill00 on 8/22/2021 & rated 94 points: Very, very good but not quite as impressive or expressive as prior bottles or recent '08 Valmur bottles. Served a little too warm which likely contributed. (2172 views)
Tasted by tinybubbles on 4/7/2021 & rated 96 points: Still young but showing well balanced tart citrus, ripe orchard fruit and mineral notes. (2137 views)
Tasted by tinybubbles on 12/26/2020 & rated 94 points: Closed but also thin, this was a somewhat underwhelming encounter with this wine. Tracked over the course of one hour. (2031 views)
Tasted by western on 4/5/2020 & rated 94 points: Delicious. (1826 views)
Tasted by BenBlu on 6/4/2019 & rated 94 points: Chilled down and decanted in large carafe. Initially so painfully mineral, almost volcanic rock expression, dry to the bone, crushed rock, pronounced oyster shell. As it warmed up an hour plus in it got much more generous with lemon peel, red apple. Quite a change. On the very young side. Will be a bruiser in ten years. 93-95 (2163 views)
Tasted by lepetitchateau on 4/23/2019 & rated 97 points: Had this last in July 2017, and I would say that time has been good to this wine! Clearly an OMG wine, it is amazingly dynamic, pure, powerful combined with divine elegance. A beauty. (2222 views)
Tasted by HowardNZ on 10/6/2018 & rated 96 points: Served blind by Con but, even just on bouquet, obviously classy Grand Cru Chablis. Baking spices, wet limestone, tidepool, meadow flowers, peach and yellow apple aromas. An attractive, powerful and complex bouquet. On palate, weighty and driven. Beautiful balance with persistent, racy acidity. Complex and layered with grapefruit, yellow apple, river boulder, pear, blanched almond and flint. Also, some green apple and greengage and a touch of very 2008 phenolic bitterness. Long, finishing dry. Ideally, it could use 2-3 more years in the cellar. (2757 views)
Tasted by rlove on 8/19/2018 & rated 95 points: Broad scale but impressively focused nose of lemon curd, oyster shell, and algae. More open and expressive than my last bottle, texture evolving toward lush, with stony minerality on the palate leading to a long finish. Curiously this hasn't developed that tell-tale Raveneau honey. Drink starting 2019. (2382 views)
Tasted by tinybubbles on 7/14/2018 & rated 95 points: Started a little simple, but blossomed over the course of an hour. A lot of oyster shell and a long finish. Just needs a lot of time. 95-96 (2162 views)
Tasted by LWI on 4/17/2018 & rated 92 points: Clean, smoke, very young (2271 views)
Tasted by Kim Gerner on 3/9/2018 & rated 95 points: Great white Burgundy - Wine tasting dinner (At home): 4 flights tasted
1. Chablis: Vincent Dauvissat Les Clos magnum '08 (typical Dauvissat - compared directly to Raveneau it is richer, the intensity is a little too high, it is less delicate and less complex. It is an extremely good wine indeed, but Raveneau is even better 94/100) against Raveneau Les Clos '08 (i must admit my favourite Chablis - none beside or above Raveneau - takes time to open in the glass! Almost no flavours in the beginning but it opens up… Extremely delicate, high complexity and very good balance. Missed a little intensity in the aromas and flavours 95+/100)
2. P-M vs Meursault: Domaine Leflaive 1. cru. les Pucelles '12 (Pucelles is in general Leflaives best 1. cru. I love the minerality and the toast, no premox at all which makes sense since it is from 2012, 95/100) against Coche-Dury 1. cru Genevrieres '06 (lots of tertiary notes including hazelnut, I believe it is on the top or a little over the top, extremely good, drink now, 96/100)
3. Le Montrachet: Bouchard Pere & Fils Le Montrachet '09 (Definitely a good wine but not better than the Pucelles and Meursault above, it is Le montrachet and I would have expected a little more intensity, 95/100) against Comtes Lafon Le Montrachet '09 (The winner of the tasting, a little too intense but closed in the beginning but opens up in the glass and the intensity, complexity and balance end up being very nice. A top quality glass 97/100. Not many wines are better - but there are examples: I can recall DRC Le Montrachet '11 which was one step above)
4. Sundry: Kumeu River Hunting Hill '13 (Tasted blind - Recognised as a new world wine, more intensity than Bourgognes, 90/100). Penfolds Chardonnay Yattarna '15 (93/100). Vocoret et Fils Chablis Grand Cru Blanchot '14 ( better than expected, a light wine, 90/100). (1387 views)
Tasted by CamWheeler on 1/6/2018 & rated 96 points: SLDS January BBQ: Smoke, pear, lemon, flint and orange aromas. Spellbinding on the palate, fresh with beautiful balance and depth. Crackling acidity, with wonderful length. Exceptional purity, with pristine fruit and cut. Brilliantly on song tonight. (2717 views)
Tasted by lepetitchateau on 7/14/2017 & rated 96 points: Massively too young, but will be astounding with sufficient time... scored on potential (2392 views)
Tasted by rlove on 2/24/2017 & rated 96 points: Bright golden yellow. Laser-like focus and precision, with lemon curd, floral honey, iodine, and crushed rock all lifting expressively from the glass. Penetrating minerality, clean & focused flavors with gobs of dry extract, framed by welcome acidity. The 2008 Les Clos is an ideal Chablis. Best starting 2020 and will age for over a decade. (2926 views)
Tasted by Sleepy Dave on 12/30/2016: Raveneau Clos, basically I don't need to say much, do I? Razor Sharp precision, expansive, almost painfully intense fruits that well balance with solid minerality and ripe rounded acidity. Seductive and classy. Still a baby and highly structure compared to the lusher 2010 & 2012 I had later this year. (1585 views)
Tasted by astroman on 9/13/2016: SL Birthday Dinner: clean and lean, chalky, flint with super intensity. Mineral on the palate with chrysanthemum like finish that goes on and on. Well balance. (3032 views)
Tasted by muchomaas on 4/1/2016 & rated 96 points: Wonderful chablis with great clarity, mineral, rocks, and a bit of exotic fruit. (3495 views)
Tasted by dcwino on 2/26/2016 & rated 97 points: Francois's 70th Birthday Celebration - Kelly and Kevin's another excellent adventure; 2/26/2016-3/1/2016 (Paris and Bordeaux): Laser like focus and precision. Dense coiled nose displaying ripe yellow fruits, lemon curd, honey, wet limestone, white flowers and rain water. Incredible concentration, beautifully layered fruits, strong presence of mineral, mouth puckering acidity and long finish that resonates. Although it opens up a bit with air, it remains pretty coiled. It clearly reflects the vintage, producer and vineyard. Very serious wine that is very impressive now but will improve for a couple decades for certain. (4574 views)
Tasted by llink on 2/9/2016 & rated 95 points: 2008 White Burgundy PremOx blind tasting and dinner. Tied for 1st in flight on my ballot with Raveneau Blanchots.
Lemon, iodine and chalky minerals on the nose. Very stony and flinty palate, with gobs of latent intense fruit flavors, tons of acidity and energy that leave a long finish. Loved it. (3428 views)
Tasted by CamWheeler on 9/16/2015 & rated 94 points: Close to Clos: Flint, lemon, mineral, herb and orange. The fruit has a fullness about it, but there is superb balance, length and poise. Extremely classy and full of potential, it is good now but will be a killer with time. (2868 views)

Les Clos

Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos exact outline

Les Clos is arguably the finest grand cru vineyard. Les Clos has greater density and power than the more elegant Vaudésir It is a deep and compact wine. The strong mineral core is of polished steel and this is enveloped in a luscious depth of fruit. If Vaudésir is the queen of the grand crus, Les Clos is the king. It ages wonderfully – a minimum of 10 years. It’s a large sunny vineyard, (28.39 hectares) facing south. It is quite rocky and has a higher level of limestone.

It is also a vineyard in Bussières

2018 vintage: "marked by a wet spring, a superb summer and a good harvest"
2019 vintage reports
2021: "From a general standpoint, whether for white, rosé or red wines, 2021 is a year marked by quality in the Rhône Valley Vineyards. Structured, elegant, fresh and fruity will be the main keywords for this new vintage."

Burgundy

Les vins de Bourgogne (Bureau interprofessionnel des vins de Bourgogne) (and in English)

Burgundy - The province of eastern France, famous for its red wines produced from Pinot Noir and its whites produced from Chardonnay. (Small of amounts of Gamay and Aligoté are still grown, although these have to be labeled differently.) The most famous part of the region is known as the Cote d'Or (the Golden Slope). It is divided into the Cote de Beaune, south of the town of Beaune (famous principally for its whites), and the Cote de Nuits, North of Beaune (home of the most famous reds). In addition, the Cote Chalonnaise and the Maconnais are important wine growing regions, although historically a clear level (or more) below the Cote d'Or. Also included by some are the regions of Chablis and Auxerrois, farther north.

# 2013 Vintage Notes:
* "2013 is a vintage that 20 years ago would have been a disaster." - Will Lyons
* "low yields and highly variable reds, much better whites." - Bill Nanson
* "Virtually all wines were chaptalised, with a bit of sugar added before fermentation to increase the final alcohol level." - Jancis Robinson

# 2014 Vintage Notes:
"We have not had such splendid harvest weather for many years. This will ensure high quality (fragrant, classy and succulent are words already being used) across the board, up and down the hierarchy and well as consistently from south to north geographically apart from those vineyards ravaged by the hail at the end of June." - Clive Coates

# 2015 Vintage Notes:
"Low yields and warm weather allowed for ample ripeness, small berries and an early harvest. Quality is looking extremely fine, with some people whispering comparisons with the outstanding 2005 vintage. Acid levels in individual wines may be crucial." - Jancis Robinson

# 2017 Vintage Notes:
"Chablis suffered greatly from frost in 2017, resulting in very reduced volumes. As ever, the irony seems to be that what remains is very good quality, as it is in the Côte d’Or. Cooler nights across the region have resulted in higher-than-usual acidity, with good conditions throughout the harvest season allowing for ripe, healthy fruit." - Jancis Robinson

# 2018 Vintage Notes:
"The most successful region for red Burgundy in 2018 was the Côte de Beaune. The weather was ideal in this area, with just enough sunlight and rain to produce perfectly balanced wines naturally." - Vinfolio

Chablis

Chablis (Fédération de Défense de l'Appellation Chablis) | Chablis (Burgundy Wines)

2014 Vintage Notes:
"... a hybrid of 2004/2007 and 2010. The stone, citrus and limestone amalgam is exactly what we search for in Chablis as the style harkens to a day in the Cote de Beaune proper (1960's - 1980's) when wine was not meant to be consumed the week it was released, battonage was not used by all and new oak was rarely seen ... the texture is natural and 'of the vintage' not 'of the winemaker' .... Like Sancerre or the Loire in general, 2014 in Chablis is one of those rare years with extract and transparency. It appears to be a vintage for the "neoclassic" ages and those of us intent on cellaring the most terroir-driven (but still powerful) examples of vineyard, site-place and varietal will want to invest (heavily) in the magnetic and electric 2014's." - Jon Rimmerman

2018 Vintage Notes:
"There’s not that razor sharp Chablis acidity in 2018,” says Patrick Piuze. “But there is good definition of place. The dry conditions drove vines to drink deeper down in the soil profile."
