Community Tasting Notes (average 91.9 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 158 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by lek55 on 3/6/2023 & rated 93 points: Still lots of red and black stone fruit, with good color, aroma, and lingering finish. (771 views)
Tasted by Casanovadineri on 1/14/2022 & rated 90 points: Cassis and Cherries on the nose. Cherries, Blackberries, potting soil and leather. Definitely think that this has far more in the tank then others. (1396 views)
Tasted by LARich on 12/6/2020 & rated 92 points: Aging beautifully but time to drink. (1907 views)
Tasted by Barolo Raymond on 5/8/2020 & rated 92 points: Stood up for 2 days before decanting for 1 hr. Cork broke twice.
Bold, concentrated powerhouse. Deep ruby, black core. Aromas of cooked black fruit, black olive, vanilla, meat notes. Off-dry, medium acidity, muted tannin, excessively high alcohol @ 16% abv, and oversize body. Dense and detailed palate of blackberry jam, black fruits, plum, sweet spice, grilled steak and pepper. Viscous texture, elegant in a powerful way. Very long finish, and despite its boldness it is very drinkable. Balance biased (still?) towards fruit makes it delicious.

Purchased this bottle at Brisbane airport in 2007 and nurtured it during our various moves across the globe. Opened ahead of our departure from Houston. And it did not disappoint!
Drink now. (2324 views)
Tasted by Sanlucar on 4/10/2020 & rated 93 points: Really delicious. Great spiciness and flavors of super-ripe red plums, blueberry pie, vanilla bean, fig paste and damp earth. This Aussie would pair well with black olives, garlic and tomatoes; I'm thinking Italian Puttanesca sauce & a fine Cuban cigar! It's unfined & unfiltered, and alcohol is 16% but not overwhelming. Beginning to slide downhill but should last a couple more years. (2298 views)
Tasted by wino121 on 12/17/2019 & rated 91 points: Still fairly vibrant for an old shoe, not much downside on the age issue, past peak by only a few years,
the only issue is balance, high ABV is the culprit.
No reason to hold this any longer.
Drink now thru 2022. (1982 views)
Tasted by Magnolian on 7/2/2019 & rated 91 points: Perfect cork. Slight bricking but opaque. Opened slightly pruney which was concerning but opened up after about 30 minutes. Still heavy, but intense and complex blackerries, graphite, and sour cherries, all nicely integrated, make this a winner. On the downhill side of its life for sure, but a pleasure to drink right now with a good decant. (1872 views)
Tasted by Andrew67 on 3/15/2019 & rated 91 points: Powerful fruit balanced by some savoury, almost earthy notes. Perhaps past its best, but still quite approachable. (1709 views)
Tasted by buckeye76 on 1/18/2019 & rated 93 points: Still deep in color with big concentrated fruit in the nose and flavor. Dried plums, blackberries, black cherries, licorice, and spice in the nose. Lots of black fruits in the flavor, blackberries, blueberries, black cherries, and plums. Complex wine, full bodied, well balanced, and a long finish. (1543 views)
Tasted by Andrew67 on 9/10/2018 & rated 91 points: Much softer than the last bottle. Still lots of power but well rounded. Vanilla, blackberry and blueberry on the palate. The tannins are smooth, and the acidity is just holding on. Good now, probably won't improve though. (1619 views)
Tasted by rocknroller on 6/18/2018 & rated 87 points: Very dark red/purple red color. PNP, drank a couple glasses over 2 hours. This still has a complex nose with lots of black cherry and plum, smoke, ash, and wood spice. But this had crossed over the line on the palate. Very thin in the middle with a clipped finish. Actually it feels almost medium bodied now with the lack of fruit on the palate; black cherry, spice, pepper, mineral with oak and alcohol now showing across the mid and back end. This was a nice wine at one point, and I'm sure there are some bottles that may be holding, but I'd suggest drinking these sooner than later. (2121 views)
Tasted by PrinceKyrris on 2/25/2018 & rated 95 points: Wow. Last bottle of this wine for me. I have enjoyed watching its development over the past 10 years.

Dark, deep purple. Lovely aroma of dark fruits with a hint of fig and violets. Not decanter but pour through a strainer/aerator as it threw some hefty sediment.

Taste is powerful yet elegant. Notes of spice box, tar, touch of smoke, and preserved dark fruit compote. Enjoyed with dinner of smoked sausage and chicken gumbo.

Wish I had more bottles. Not sure if it will get better but it is drinking beautifully right now. (1870 views)
Tasted by pablor on 1/27/2018 & rated 92 points: Good but not excellent the first 2 hours in decanter. After hour 2 1/2 started to prove its mettle. Sadly by that time almost half the bottle was gone. If someone out there is hearing, my advise is do not drink it before a good 3 hour decant, it would be a pity to miss the excellent stuff this turns into after that airing span. Deep dark color and showing almost no signs of aging at rim. This and the amount of air it required to untight indicates this wine should continue to evolve and stay at top for at least another 10 years. (1761 views)
Tasted by drmarclevine on 1/21/2018 & rated 92 points: Black cherry cream and some dried herbs, basel, and rosemary. Solid core of blue/black fruits with a big hit of vanilla. Dense and chewy. Will hold but likely won't gain in complexity though the fruit isn't going anywhere. (1702 views)
Tasted by LARich on 10/12/2017 & rated 93 points: Stunning. Goes on 45 seconds and still a massive fruity wine. Needs a little decanting and a few more years. (2127 views)
Tasted by Hi.its.Don.4.Wine on 1/22/2017 & rated 93 points: Just as Vinous said "Explosively perfumed bouquet" it still is all of that. The palate is still big and dark red fruit driven with that Plum and slight vanilla note. Tannins are there, but after 11 years, they have softened. Spice notes still there but softer than upon release. One more bottle and I think I'll try to wait at least 2 to 3 years before consuming. (2975 views)
Tasted by VinCrush on 12/20/2016 & rated 92 points: Powerful, yet refined. Delicious, yet not overly complex. All-in-all, a delicious bottle. Poured a dark purple with just a bit of sediment. Obviously the expected black and blue fruits with some vanilla and clove. Not a lot of secondary flavors. And I didn't pick up much of the raisin or prune as noted by some others. Silky smooth with no detectable tannin, but a little bit of acidity still poking through. The high alcohol wasn't a distraction at all. A very nice product of 50+ and 100+ year old vineyards. (2664 views)
Tasted by Radzimir on 12/4/2016 & rated 88 points: Fine wine. But even after 11 years aging never noticed great development of secondary flavors. Balanced but straight forward. (2697 views)
Tasted by gmbdds on 11/26/2016: I opened for company and didn't get a chance to make a note. I will simply add that this has aged quite well and has a lot to offer still and has shed its big fruit-forwardness. I last tasted in 2008 and gave it a 93 at that time. (2701 views)
Tasted by dsiii on 11/22/2016 & rated 89 points: Very nice wine, beautiful nose, but fruit is on the jammy side. May just not be my style of syrah. Holding up well, though. (2318 views)
Tasted by williamswhine on 11/13/2016 & rated 97 points: Absolutely stunning wine! Deep dark hue. Dark berries, blueberry. Great harmony-- smooth, velvet, great structure. Ate with short ribs and this paired beautifully. Overtones of blueberry, slight vanilla, long finish. Must say, very nicely surprised and glad Hol and I were able to drink together. (1441 views)
Tasted by Andrew67 on 4/25/2016 & rated 91 points: The question with Barossa Shiraz for me is whether there is enough structure and complexity to manage the intense fruit you almost always get. This wine passes the test, though the fruit is probably a bit too full-on for this wine to be great. There's blackberry and vanilla on the nose. Blackberries, plums, cloves and earth on the palate. The tannins are quit grippy, which for me is the main counterpoint (along with the earthiness) to the fruit. It is still very fresh and so has a few years ahead of it, however I am not convinced it will improve much from here. So start drinking and enjoying this soon. (2142 views)
Tasted by afu on 4/2/2016 & rated 94 points: Another Aussie Shiraz that has successfully evolved from one dimensional fruit bomber to a more complex and layered wine. Yes it's an Aussie Shiraz with a nice mouth feel and long finish. The usual dark fruit and terroir specific earthiness. We are thoroughly enjoying our Australian Shiraz as they round into form. (2498 views)
Tasted by rocknroller on 10/31/2015 & rated 90 points: A Tasty Halloween Wine Lunch (Judith's House, WI): Purple color. Decanted for 1 hour plus. Drank 1 glass over 90 minutes. Powerful forward nose of black fruits; creme de cassis, blackberry, vanilla, spice. The palate is unfortunately marred by a lot of heat today that just doesn't want to settle down, long and still tasty, dense and chewy, pepper, wood, black raspberry and cassis, along with blackberries. 90+pts. Not as good as previous bottles. (3055 views)
Tasted by Chainthroer on 10/30/2015 & rated 94 points: Last tasted four years ago. Initially the American oak on the nose reminded me of an older Torres Grand Coronas Reserva. Aromas of American oak, blackberry, creme de cassis, raspberry, forest floor and some hints of road tar. Similar flavors, with the addition of a little bit of licorice. Same as last time, the fruit was big and somewhat chewy. The wine is now drinking at its apogee. For me, a quite pleasurable wine. (2556 views)

Kaesler Shiraz The Bogan

Our ‘Bogan Block’ is in the Marananga sub region of the Barossa, planted in 1899, we are the grateful custodians of these vines that have seen many things including the Federation of a Nation, two world wars and several generations of blood sweat and tears. This amazing fruit is combined with our 1965 Old Vine blocks that are from the same clonal material as our Old Bastard vineyard

The Kaesler Vineyards were established in 1893. The family, sprung from Silesian pioneers who came to the Barossa Valley in the 1840s, took up 96 acres in 1891. They cleared the scrub and in 1893 planted out the entire holding with Shiraz, Grenache, Mataro (Mourvedre) and White Hermitage vines.

Some of the gnarled dry-grown Shiraz still remains and provides the backbone of the intense wines produced from the sandy loam of this prime viticultural block.
