Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 92.8 pts. and median of 93 pts. in 14 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Adrian Chmielarz on 1/20/2024 & rated 90 points: On one side a light red that blends elegance with rustic notes, on the other a sea, no, an ocean of delicate tannins. The problem is, those two sides don't necessarily work together well. Either it is what it is, or it needs more years in the cellar. (573 views)
Tasted by Sam-wine on 5/5/2023 & rated 93 points: It took a good while to open, but then this was great. Intense complex nose of dried ripen cherries, delicate roses, balsamic notes, leather. At taste, very fine and still noticeable tannins, medium body, medium acidity. Complex, different layers of fruity notes (cherries, red fruits), together with leathery and more balsamic notes. Medium to long finish.
Excellent barolo (1112 views)
Tasted by kenv on 2/21/2023 & rated 94 points: Baudana Baudana Dinner with Giuseppe Vaira (Popina, 127 Columbia St, Brooklyn, NY): Stunning nose. Great perfume. Big and juicy, this definitely needs time, but there's a lush silkiness to this that makes it appealing to drink now. Still, it will benefit from another 10 years in the cellar. 94-96 (1245 views)
Tasted by SteveHyde on 9/25/2022 & rated 93 points: A much better showing than my last bottle, and better on the second day. Beautifully perfumed, with lovely fruit and spice notes that are just starting to add layers of leather, olive wood smoke, and mineral. Terrific. (1308 views)
Tasted by SteveHyde on 1/4/2020 & rated 92 points: Very well made by Vajra from a plot acquired from Baudana. Lovely sweet fruit, well-structured with fine tannins. Lively in the mouth. Will improve with more age, but fun to drink now. (4872 views)
Tasted by VINNICK on 3/22/2019 & rated 90 points: Very interesting Barolo. Lots of rustic notes in what is otherwise an elegant wine. Will definitely get better with age. Might suggest waiting a couple of years before touching the next one. Glad I tried and lovely wine for $70 range. (3778 views)
Tasted by KVM on 10/13/2018: Medium red. Fresh fruit, but not as expressive as Ravera. Excellent fruit, with licorice, menthol on the finish. Firm, with all the stuff for aging. (4337 views)
Tasted by BradE on 10/11/2018: We all liked this. Built for the long haul. (4089 views)
Tasted by vespasian on 10/8/2018: A more powerful impression on the nose here, some definite blackcurrant & liquorice amongst the complex fruits here. Spice, some florality; lovely fruit which is opening up nicely. Fine tannins. A very well balanced wine. Fresh acidity drives things along. Violet and cassis on the finish. (3429 views)
Tasted by MC2 Wines on 5/10/2018: Vajra & Baudana Barolo Dinner (Ai Fiori (Langham Hotel on 5th Ave)): Theme of the night is on the young side. It's a classy wine though. Good structure and tannin. Some more muted red fruits. Doesn't jump out of the glass at you. It's a quieter wine. (2893 views)
Tasted by rossi.wine on 11/1/2017 & rated 95 points: Tasted after Vajra’s 2013 Albe, Bricco delle Viole and Ravera. Very mineral, dark and brooding, lots of structure, powerful tannins. Wonderful persistence and energy to the finish. Very promising, but needs time. 94-95+ (3216 views)
Tasted by cct on 5/7/2017 & rated 94 points: With Francesca

Great perfume. Roses and spice, underpinnings of meatier and savory tones as well. Sappy and rich, but not heavy. Rose and tar, menthol on th back end. Ripe in a good way. Spice. The best versions of this si have had. (2345 views)
Tasted by Eric Guido on 2/8/2017 & rated 95 points: The nose was dark and rich with brown spices, crushed blackberry, a dusty mix of minerals and spice with a hint of animal musk. On the palate, I found remarkably soft, velvety textures with zesty black fruits, ripe plum and a bitter hint of herbal spice. It was at once youthfully tannic, yet fresh with a dark and imposing persona, finishing long with dark red fruits, saturating spice and a coating of fine tannin. (3525 views)

Luigi Baudana

Producer Website
Luigi Baudana is one of the last garagiste wineries of Serralunga d'Alba.
4 hectares are farmed.
4 wines are produced:
Barolo Baudana: single vineyard, south-west exposure, clay soils and "arenarie di Diano", approx. 300 cases made per year.
Barolo Cerretta: single vineyard, south-east exposure, white calcareous marls. approx. 300 cases made per year.
Both single vineyards were listed in the Renato Ratti chart of Barolo.
Starting with 2005 vintage, also a "Barolo di Serralunga d'Alba" is produced, from the younger vines (3-400 cases).
Finally, a white field blend called Langhe Bianco Dragon completes the production (production unknown).
Curiosities:
-the winery is currently run by the Vajra family of G.D. Vajra together with Luigi and Fiorina Baudana.
-wines before 2004 were bottled by hand and by gravity. Wines after 2005 vintage are bottled by machine.

Source: VinConnect (VinConnect.com)
Luigi Baudana is one of the last garagiste estates still operating in the Langhe region. It is also the smallest of all the VinConnect Piemontese wineries.

The estate is a mere 4 hectares in size (~10 acres), but all the vineyards are held in the highest hierarchy of Barolo vineyards, being listed both in the Lorenzo Fantini “Monografia sulla Viticultura ed Enologia in Provincia di Cuneo” (1879) and in Renato Ratti’s “Carta del Barolo” from the early 1970s.

Ceretta may well be the better know cru. Located on the east slope of Serralunga d’Alba, this vineyard has a unique soil composition, made of a very white, calcareous topsoil and a deeper layer of red clay beneath. Wines from Ceretta are all about class and broad intensity.

Baudana, on the other hand, is one of the best-kept secrets among Barolo aficionados. Iconic winemaker Franco Fiorina used to select fruit of Baudana for his highly acclaimed Barolos, until the late 1980s. Today, only three single-vineyard Barolos are released from this cru, and the Luigi Baudana may well be the only one to be exported to the U.S.

It would be enough to mention that Baudana is the name of the vineyard, of the village and of Luigi and Fiorina’s family, to express how deep the roots and how important the family legacy to this very unique place!

In 2009, Francesca, Isidoro and Guiseppe, the three children of famed Aldo and Milena Vajra of G.D Vajra, joined the Baudana family to bring new energies and an uncompromised respect to this story.

Nebbiolo

Nebbiolo is a red grape indigenous to the Piedmont region of Italy in the Northwest. The grape can also be found in other parts of the world, though they are not as respected.

Nebbiolo is often considered the "king of red wines," as it is the grape of the famed wines of Barolo DOCG, Barbaresco DOCG, and Roero DOCG. It is known for high tannins and acidity, but with a distinct finesse. When grown on clay, Nebbiolo can be very powerful, tannic, and require long aging periods to reach its full potential. When grown on sand, the grape exhibits a more approachable body with more elegant fruit and less tannins, but still has high aging potential.

"Nebbiolo" is named for the Italian word, "nebbia", which means "fog", in Italian and rightfully so since there is generally a lot of fog in the foothills of Piedmont during harvest.

Nebbiolo is a late-ripening variety that does best in a continental climate that boasts moderate summers and long autumns. In Piedmont, Nebbiolo is normally harvested in October.

Barolo

Regional History:
The wines of Piedmont are noted as far back as Pliny's Natural History. Due to geographic and political isolation, Piedmont was without a natural port for most of its history, which made exportation treacherous and expensive. This left the Piedmontese with little incentive to expand production. Sixteenth-century records show a mere 14% of the Bassa Langa under vine -- most of that low-lying and farmed polyculturally. In the nineteenth century the Marchesa Falletti, a frenchwoman by birth, brought eonologist Louis Oudart from Champagne to create the first dry wines in Piemonte. Along with work in experimental vineyards at Castello Grinzane conducted by Camilo Cavour -- later Conte di Cavour, leader of the Risorgimento and first Prime Minister of Italy -- this was the birth of modern wine in the Piedmont. At the heart of the region and her reputation are Alba and the Langhe Hills. This series of weathered outcroppings south of the Tanaro River is of maritime origin and composed mainly of limestone, sand and clay, known as terra bianca. In these soils -located mainly around the towns of Barolo and Barbaresco -- the ancient allobrogica, now Nebbiolo, achieves its renowned fineness and power.
