Tasted by MaVino13 on 11/27/2023 & rated 90 points: Wine Rating Methodology
96-100: One of the most enjoyable wines I have ever tasted. I would not hesitate to open this wine for any Master of Wine.
91-95: Extremely enjoyable wine that I would drink and buy again. Fantastic to open up for those who appreciate wine.
85-90: Decent to good wine. Weekday bottle you don’t feel guilty about not finishing.
Below 85: would not drink or buy again.
***Price of wine vs. enjoyment (value) is taken into consideration
***I do not provide tasting notes as everyone’s palate is different and will have a different experience. (1346 views)
Tasted by der Schmecker on 10/9/2023 & rated 95 points: An experience. Not for the faint of heart. Complex. Potent. Exceptional. You have to be up for this, it's something else. Initially, I was not prepared and the intensity was overwhelming. The next day, I came back for a pour, had my expectations in place and was bowled over.

Big. Deep. Smooth. Grapes and raisins. Just a mouthful of red and black grapeness that has it all.

Field blend consisting of Zinfandel and Carignan, Alicante Bouschet, and Palomino (aka Chasselas Doré). Interplanted Muscadelle, Colombard, Muscat of Hamburg, Aramon, Petit Bouschet, Criolla Mediana, and Grand Noir also make an appearance. Saitone Ranch is the oldest of the old-vine vineyards remaining in the Piner-Olivet area of Sonoma with records indicating that the vines were in the ground as early as 1895.

15.3% alcohol. 290 cases. (1382 views)
Tasted by spendergast on 9/19/2023 & rated 95 points: Notes of dark fruit, black raspberry and plum, with elements of herbs and spice. Velvety mouthfeel with some acidity and well integrated tannins. Paired well with grilled BBQ ribs. (1221 views)
Tasted by DrELW on 9/3/2023 & rated 94 points: This wine has a deep, bright violet color. The nose is not very expressive. The flavor is mostly blackberry with some cinnamon and molasses undertones. The body is full with a silky mouthfeel and a fresh, generous finish. The tannins are silky with no bitterness. This wine is pretty young for a heavy red, but it's totally approachable now. It has 15.3% EtOH which is higher than I like, but very typical for a zinfindel. There is some ripeness resulting in some jam, but there's enough acidity to make it acceptable. This is one of my top three vineyards out of the Carlisle portfolio.
This went exceptionally well with our pizza dinner. (1314 views)

Tasted by Adam T 12 on 5/12/2023 & rated 92 points: 92 with room for improvement! Tried to pop and pour and it was disjointed. After a night in the decanter it opened up nicely. Tons of dark fruit. Hold 2+ years. (1147 views)
Tasted by RobbieC on 3/23/2023: Very good. WS 94 and current CT average of 93.5 are legit. (1187 views)
Tasted by Dionysusx on 3/18/2023 & rated 94 points: Dark and brooding at first sip. Blue- and blackberry flavors, licorice, raisin, orange peel. Dusty tannins, earth and the lovely, smooth kick of zest and pepper. Rustic and excellent. Decanted 1 hour. Could use more time.
Enjoyed at home, paired with stuffed bbq chicken. (1137 views)
Tasted by WineJ2019 on 1/22/2023 & rated 92 points: Rich, intense, not over the top, drinking well now. (1010 views)
Tasted by fdub on 1/22/2023 & rated 95 points: Lifted and bramble elements on the nose with pure fruit coming through. In the mouth expansive and blue fruit tones pushing the long cherry inflected finish. (1194 views)
Tasted by Mike Dildine on 12/9/2022 & rated 95 points: 15.3% abv. Medium-dark ruby, moderately aromatic. Raspberry, red cherry, holiday spice, white pepper and a touch of bramble. Excellent depth, length and balance. Intense, but not at all overbearing. Exceptional. (1150 views)
Tasted by Mtnmd1 on 12/4/2022 & rated 93 points: Good on opening but came alive after 2 hours. Long restrained unctuous finish. (1111 views)
Tasted by slywka7 on 10/21/2022 & rated 94 points: Opened 1.5 hours before writing this. Aromas of cherry, blueberry, boysenberry, lavender and licorice. Flavors of blueberry, wild cherry, boysenberry and hint of black pepper. Ends with a long finish of 35+ seconds red berry notes. Nice bottle. (1115 views)
Tasted by rdf58 on 9/9/2022 & rated 94 points: Wow, this is good. Showing some richness and viscosity in an easy drinking style. Lots of up front red fruit balances out some juicy acidity. Not much in the way of tannins. Clearly on the young side but it's a lot of fun at this stage. Nice to see Saitone back in the Carlisle portfolio. (1259 views)
Tasted by Mike Dildine on 8/3/2022 & rated 95 points: Rich, balanced, concentrated fruit and a long finish. A great vineyard and Mike's team did justice to the fruit. (1283 views)
Tasted by RobbieC on 4/9/2022: Lovely! (1519 views)
Tasted by Geoff on 4/7/2022 & rated 94 points: Beautiful zin with dark fruit, balanced tannins, smooth mouthfeel, full body and long finish. (1357 views)

2019 Carlisle Zinfandel Saitone Ranch

From release newsletter

2019 Russian River Valley “Saitone Vineyard” Zinfandel

It’s been a long five-year wait but Saitone is back! Just a few hundred yards north of Papera Ranch, planted in 1895, Saitone Vineyard is one of if not the oldest vineyards in the Piner-Olivet region of the Russian River Valley. Now owned by Williams Selyem, we are incredibly fortunate that they are willing to share some of this very special fruit with us. Picked on September 29th, the must was cold soaked for five days before inoculation with a local strain of yeast, appropriately named Williams Selyem. Pressed to all French oak, 25% new. Lightly fined with gelatin to smooth the palate but bottled unfiltered.

Tasting Note: Medium-dark ruby. Aromas of black raspberry and cherry cola are highlighted by suggestions of black licorice and lavender. Of all our 2019 Russian River Valley Zinfandels, this comes across as the darkest in profile, almost Southern Rhône in character and reminding me of one of my favorite old-vine Châteauneuf-du-Pape Grenache cuvées from the lieu-dit of Chapouin. On the palate, medium-full bodied. Flavors of black and blue fruits persist in the chalky yet gently tannic finish. At once both powerful and graceful, this will benefit from a couple additional years in the bottle. Drink this old-vine beauty from 2024 through 2030.

Saitone Ranch

Once part of the Nicholas Carriger Estate (Nicholas Carriger was a good friend of General Vallejo and an early settler of Sonoma County after striking it rich in the Gold Rush), Saitone Ranch is the oldest of the old-vine vineyards remaining in the Piner-Olivet area. Still owned by the Saitone family today, we know from records that vines were in the ground and growing as early as 1895. Several blocks of Carignane, Zinfandel, Alicante Bouschet, and Chasselas Doré comprise the bulk of the remaining 17 acres of largely dry-farmed old vines. Interplanted Muscadelle, French Colombard, Muscat of Hamburg, Aramon, Petit Bouschet, Criolla Mediana, and Grand Noir also make an appearance. Like Papera Ranch just down the road, picking is generally quite late for this vineyard, often towards the end of October.

Saitone Ranch, which lies next to Papera Ranch in the Piner-Olivet area of the Russian River Valley, was planted in 1896. As one would expect it has a smidge of Petite Sirah, Alicante, and other mixed-blacks in it. Perhaps due to vine age and perhaps due to farming the Saitone is a step up in breadth and intensity from neighboring Papera.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
