Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 93 pts. and median of 93 pts. in 3183 notes) - hiding notes with no text

 Tasted by Benoit Hardy on 5/20/2024 & rated 95 points: era 2004-2011. We therefore have wines mainly from the 90s.

Very powerful nose of rancio. The aroma is finely dosed, with assertive vinosity on red fruits and nuts.

Creamy and dense mouthfeel, first time I have had such a powerful GC. The wine is perfectly structured in such a way that the vinosity and power gradually fade in the mid-palate to give way to a superb minerality, all layered, with successively chalk, wet stone and saline flavors. Perfectly balanced, with a magnificent freshness which gives life to this ample and complex juice.
Finale which synthesizes the wine, between powerful, assertive vinosity and vibrant length on mineral salts.

Great champagne where everything is there: texture, power, finesse, complexity, longevity… (1165 views)
 Tasted by kayintse on 5/8/2024 & rated 94 points: After more than 10 years of maturing in bottle, this particular bottle of Krug NV (edition 4 according to an champagne expert friend) has evolved so much and exhibited high level of complexed flavors such as honey and caramel, with mellowed down fine bubbles. The slight oxidation complemented with toasted flavour. Really outstanding and rewarding for the years of wait! (1684 views)
 Tasted by Rogershkg on 4/30/2024 & rated 92 points: Mellow and rounded taste, very frothy when poured - no hint of sharpness (1877 views)
 Tasted by D'Yquembe Mutumbo on 4/17/2024 & rated 92 points: Lots of life in this bottle, but dominated by citrus in a way that tamped down the brioche and saline elements of the wine. Fresh and good with oysters and funky cheese (2284 views)
 Tasted by Eric Wright on 4/6/2024 & rated 91 points: Classic profile. Toasted brioche. Better with 30 minutes of air (2512 views)
 Tasted by jsmorris707 on 4/5/2024 & rated 95 points: 162ème Édition, PNP, lovely & went perfectly with my seared salmon salad for lunch at Cap Grille, ready to drink (2370 views)
 Tasted by jmoore431 on 4/3/2024 & rated 94 points: My last bottle of the plain label (without the numbered edition). Medium gold with fine steady beading; Mature, ripe apple, crushed almond, hazelnut, some pleasantly sweet character; rather clean style; long finish. 94+ (2741 views)
 Tasted by DCHawkeye on 3/16/2024 & rated 96 points: Popped to start the festivities for a milestone birthday dinner at the Inn at Little Washington, this bottle predates the current Edition numbering so it obviously included some older vintages. This was drinking beautifully, with a delicate bead and excellent acidity, great depth and complexity, tho not as "yeasty" as I usually think of with Krug. A perfect way to start.
Wines:
Krug Grande Cuvée NV;
2010 Bonneau du Martray Corton Charlemagne Grand Cru;
2010 Clos des Lambrays Grand Cru;
2009 d'Angerville Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Ducs;
1989 Chateau Montrose; and
1988 Chateau d'Yquem (750 ml). (1780 views)
 Tasted by andrewstevenson.com on 3/15/2024 & rated 94 points: A bottle I've had in the cellar about 20 years. V511 on the cork, if anyone can decode that.
Fairly deep straw colour. Nice mousse on pouring, and lovely persistent stream of tiny bubbles in the glass.
Lots of buttery brioche on the nose, pear fruit and some kaffir lime leaf florality. Lovely depth and complexity on the nose.
Remarkably fresh tasting (much fresher than the colour would have you believe). Perfectly balanced, and really rather satisfying. Has more of the weight and character that I associate now with English Sparkling Wine rather than other French grande marques.
Nice richness, even the slightest hint of caramel on the finish. (2731 views)
 Tasted by PSPatrick on 3/14/2024 & rated 96 points: On a Singapore Airlines flight from New York to Frankfurt. Light lemon colour. Zesty lemon, green apple, light almond, light nuts, light biscuit, brioche, smoke, and chalky minerality, with great acidity, and great persistence. The mousse is ultra-fine, soft, and creamy. Beautifully balanced. Simply great! (2495 views)
 Tasted by Lordswood on 3/10/2024 & rated 93 points: V 731 on the cork, so disgorged apparently in 2007, which makes sense as I purchased on release in 2008. Pale golden colour, good bubbles. Beautifully balanced, fresh and an absolute delight to drink now. Probably needs food to show its power and character at its best…. (2464 views)
 Tasted by The Vines That Bind on 3/8/2024 & rated 94 points: Determined to be 156ème based around 2000 harvest, no Krug ID, no code on the label, but found a code engraved on the bottom of the glass. Makes sense as this was both fresh and bright with plenty of acidity but had developed weight, richer golden fruit flavours, and some of that stylistic Krug sherry character. Excellent wine, excellent condition, in a great place for drinking now but good bottles clearly have runway ahead. (2151 views)
 Tasted by cct on 3/3/2024 & rated 94 points: V721 2001 base disgorged in 2007

Not much different than the last couple bottles. This bottling is in the zone right now. Not the most profound bottling but giving all its got right now.

Maillard mature terrific nose, a little honeyed with toast, orchard fruit and chalk. Intense yet lifted and poised. Mouthwateringly fresh and confused. Drinking at peak. Lifted intensity and poised. At peak. (2547 views)
 Tasted by Asmiller on 2/14/2024 & rated 100 points: Best ever! (3627 views)
 Tasted by kenv on 2/3/2024 & rated 92 points: Bring a Great Nebbiolo (Chez Goldberg, Greenwich Village, NYC): [This has V721 printed on the cork. We were told this means this is a 2001 base disgorged in 2007.] Light gold color. Mature, elegant. Yeasty. (2694 views)
 Tasted by cct on 2/3/2024 & rated 94 points: V721 Disgorged 2007- 2001 base

Again a terrific nose. toast, bright orchard fruit, honey and chalk. Lovely Maillard notes. This is in a great spot right now. Some honeyed, nutty notes juxtaposed to the still vibrant fresh fruit notes and beautifully integrated dosage. Not the most incredible version of the GC, but certainly giving all it can, at peak. This is in a great spot right now. 94 (2928 views)
 Tasted by SH Wu on 2/2/2024 & rated 96 points: Best guess from us is ~152-154eme based on purchase date (pre-labels having eme or a code). The acidity was searing as it was poured from magnum. Buttered toast and white fruit richness hide in the background on open.

With air, the butter browns and the bouquet evolves to a soothing waft of lemon zest and white flower florals. Acidity softens and gives way to a rich texture on the palate.

This is the best grand cuvee I've had by a long shot, and I'm glad we got a mag. (3245 views)
 Tasted by aquacongas on 1/28/2024 & rated 100 points: Krug Lover Dinner with Olivier Krug (Daniel Dal Ban 1876 (Tafelspitz) Düsseldorf): not blind, Magnum, 2nd Generation
A perfect Grande Cuvee 1st and 2nd Generation from Magnum side by side. For me both are perfect champagnes. You get everything what you wish. Both with bubbles, both fresh and the most multi-layered champagnes you can imagine. But the finish is fresh, filigree and precise. Olivier Krug never had both bottles from Magnum side by side. For him the most faszinating bottles of the evening. 100 (3513 views)

 Tasted by Dmax808 on 1/8/2024 & rated 95 points: 2004-2011 edition. Could have used another 5 years but great as usual. (4137 views)
 Tasted by Peech on 1/1/2024 & rated 91 points: ID 319028 (169ème Édition), en demi-bouteille - acidity was much higher than I had expected. Good marmalade notes on the nose with good ripeness, and certainly yeasty. Definitely more lean on the palate. (3301 views)
 Tasted by LittleLeaguer on 12/28/2023 & rated 93 points: 169em. Half Bottle. Had it at home with some cheese and ham.

First impression feels dense—both citrus and stone fruits along with sweet/waxy characters. It’s young but you do get the layers of different notes.

You taste it, and it feels “large”. The wine feels expansive and wide. There’s so much to experience here. It’s fruits, it’s acid, it’s loads of flowers, and the texture feels it’s gliding.

A standard with which all of my future Champagnes will be judged on. Note to self: take time drinking (2982 views)
 Tasted by Colinred on 12/25/2023 & rated 93 points: 166 edition, base year of 2010. This wine is lovely and refined, but still quite young. I will keep for a couple more years before opening my next bottle. (2735 views)
 Tasted by JulianSkeels on 12/15/2023 & rated 98 points: From an October 1987 released bottle (base vintage 1982). Amazing bottle with faint bubbles. Intoxicating nose of jasmine, honeysuckle, dried mango and gingerbread. Broad, deep and long and impossible to not drink (repeatedly). My favourite champagne of the year (3922 views)
 Tasted by NoTrollingerPlease on 11/18/2023 & rated 90 points: Krug tasting (Freiheit Vinothek, Ulm, Germany): Glass: Riedel Superleggero Champagne
Magnum, assumed from the 90ies. Clear, deep golden color. Ripe nose. On the palate a bit sweet, slightly oxidized, lacks energy and tension. But still balanced and harmonious with a lively acidity. A bit past, but still joyful. 90 (4365 views)

Sommelier Journal, July 2008
(NV Krug Champagne Grande Cuvée Brut) A Chardonnay-based blend of as many as 10 different vintages, primarily from grand cru vineyards. Krug’s tête de cuvée, like the wines of Bollinger, is first barrel-fermented in neutral oak. Golden yellow in color, it has fresh, bold aromas of Bosc pear, Macintosh apples, nutmeg, and lemon meringue. On the palate, it is full-bodied and rich with caramel, earth, and baking spices. The finish is long. The Shifting Landscape of Champagne

Rockss and Fruit (12/1/2004)
(NV Krug) New label which is kind of boring and even ugly. Old label was really classy. Don't know what they were thinking. If it ain't broke don't fix it. The wine was gorgeous. Just gets better every time I have it. Easily one of the most conisistent wineries in the world. Massive concentration allied with a seamlessness and utterly mindlowing complexity.

France - When it comes to wine, France stands alone. No other country can beat it in terms of consistent quality and diversity. And while many of its Region, Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne most obviously, produce wine as rare, as sought-after and nearly as expensive as gold, there are just as many obscurities and values to be had from little known appellations throughout the country. To learn everything there is to know about French wine would take a lifetime. To understand and appreciate French wine, one only has to begin tasting them. Sub-Region:

Champagne - The French region of Champagne (including the cities of Rheims, Épernay, and Aÿ) was the first region in the world to make sparkling wine in any quantity. Today, the name of the region is synonymous with the finest of all sparkling wines, and wine-making traditions of Champagne have become role models for sparkling wine producers, worldwide. Surprisingly, the region of Champagne is now responsible for only one bottle in 12 of all sparkling wine produced. Styles of champagne range in sweetness ranging from an extra brut or brut 0, to the basic brut to demi sec to doux; some houses produce single vintage champagnes and others produce non-vintage (or incorporate wines/grapes of multiple vintages), often to preserve a specific taste; combinations of grape varietals; and colors, including a rosé. There are several sub-appellations, including the Valley of the Marnes river running from Épernay west, Massif de Saint-Thierry north and west of Rheims, Valley of the Ardre, the Mountains of Rheims (between Rheims and Épernay), Côte des Blancs, Côte de Sézanne, and Côte des Bar in the South. Champagne wine only uses three grape varietals (cépages): Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier.
