Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 86.9 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 12 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by oldwines on 1/12/2019 & rated 94 points: In my cellar since the late 1980’s and my last bottle, served to my daughter and new son-in-law (and a few others) at their wedding, representing his birth year. Double decanted at 11am and tasted around 9pm. Some of the recent tasting notes on the wine seem rather disappointing and I was fearful this might not be very good but I was quite surprised. When first tasted while decanting this was clearly inferior to the 1984 but to my pleasant surprise it put on considerable weight and exploded with fruit and layers of secondary flavors much later in the evening. There was some brett present to be sure but this was a case where it did seem to enhance the experience of the wine. Very earthy, barnyardy but also with leather and chocolate along with some brighter cherry fruit rather than darker fruit that showed in the 1984. I think on the whole the 1984 was a touch better but this was a very pleasant experience. (3126 views)
Tasted by DanielleRose on 1/12/2019: A delicious wine provided and decanted by my father for my husband at our wedding reception. Lovely! (3002 views)
Tasted by Bodyfxr on 9/22/2017 & rated 83 points: Tasted at a Ridge wine tasting at City Winery in Atlanta. This was the last wine of the flight. Pale flat red to the edge with a dark cloudy brick middle. The nose was a bit musty with hints of dried raisin and earth/dirty mushrooms. This bottle was not flawed. Little to no fruit on the palate with elements of earth and mushroom, extending into a lengthy finish. The Som said that this wine is currently at its peak however I disagree. I believe that this wine is a good 10 years past its prime. (4108 views)
Tasted by POBlund on 3/23/2017 & rated 91 points: Tasted at 12 vintage vertical by Michel Jamais.
First nose was odd but opened up after 30 min. Mature and elegant.
Nice elegant body palate of truffels, cedar, mushrooms, 11,5%
Almost overmature. (4501 views)
Tasted by Steve Jones on 3/25/2012 & rated 89 points: Nose: dusty saddle leather, muskiness, sour cranberry, cassis, . Flavors: dusty saddle leather, red fruits (cranberry), some oak, dried mushroom/earth with light body. I really felt it was starting to fade. Had it any decent finish I might have gone 90 pts.  Tasted by agbailey on 1/8/2011: Wineterfest 2011: Opened about 2 hours before serving, no decant. Enjoyed over the course of 90 minutes. Garnet / claret color showed the most age - lightest color of the flight, and faded towards the edge. Wonderful nose with lots of secondary flavors that you look for in an aged cabernet. Saddle leather, muskiness, vanilla, cranberry, cassis on the nose. Flavors were of leather, red fruits (cranberry), oak (not overdone), mushroom, terroir. Wine had a light body. Very good.

3 seconds, 1 3rd place vote. (7334 views)
Tasted by brucegolfer on 2/8/2009 & rated 90 points: Decanted for an hour. Very full bodied, still vibrant and with adequate fruit. Worked well with duck. (6975 views)
Tasted by Siggy on 1/24/2005 & rated 90 points: This bottle was purchased by my in-laws in the mid-eighties, and lived in the basements of several houses over the years. We finally opened it over an extended family dinner. By the numbers, this is a 96% Cabernet, 4% Merlot blend with 11.5% alcohol (how different the prevailing style of winemaking was then!). The wine had thrown a moderate amount of sediment; I didn't decant because I wanted to capture as much of the remaining fruit as possible. The cork was in excellent shape, with a crumbly last half-inch. Very evolved brick red/brown/amber color; I was surprised to find quite a bit of black cherry fruit on the palate, and little or no trace of oak. Interesting notes of eucalyptus, spearmint, leather, and an earthy/mushroomy quality that really grew on me over a few glasses. The tannins are completely evolved. This was the oldest California wine I've ever tasted (23 years after the vintage), and while it should ideally have been drunk up 5-10 years ago given its uneven storage history, it was still excellent.  Tasted by bestdamncab on 2/1/1990: Open, fruity nose with lots of earthy, cabernet flavors that detract from the wine. Finish is fruity and long lasting with hints of tannin. (4072 views)
Tasted by MicklethePickle on 7/11/1989 & rated 62 points: At home watching the All-Star game. Dark brick red. Clearly an older wine. Nose unappealing-bark, vinegar, and dried out fruit. On the palate, very disappointing. Almost completely dried out, hollow. There's very little to like. Harsh, charmless finish doesn't help. 4–6–1-1:62/100. (367 views)
Tasted by bestdamncab on 5/1/1988 & rated 83 points: Open, floral, fruity nose, same in mouth, great wine near peak. (1350 views)

Ridge

Producer website | Wikipedia

Ridge Vineyards is a California winery specializing in premium Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, and Chardonnay wines. Ridge produces wine at two winery locations in northern California. The original winery facilities are located at an elevation of 2,300 feet (700 m) on Monte Bello Ridge in the Santa Cruz Mountains AVA near Cupertino, California. The other Ridge winery facilities are at Lytton Springs in the Dry Creek Valley AVA of Sonoma County.

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson

Santa Cruz Mountains

Santa Cruz Mountains Winegrowers Association | Wikipedia

Once referred to by wine writers as the Chaine d'Or -- or "golden chain" -- the Santa Cruz Mountains AVA sits above Silicon Valley, running along the craggy range next to the Pacific on some of the prettiest parts of Northern California. The area supports more than 75 wineries, despite being limited by geography and high land prices.

In 1981 the Santa Cruz Mountains Viticultural Appellation became federally recognized, one of the first American viticultural areas to be defined by geophysical and climatic factors. The appellation encompasses the Santa Cruz Mountain range, from Half Moon Bay in the north, to Mount Madonna in the south. The east and west boundaries are defined by elevation, extending down to 800 feet in the east and 400 feet in the west.
