Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 90.5 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 34 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Pknut on 2/7/2016: I've had mixed results with the older Ellner releases over the years. Some have been baked and over the hill, none have been great. This bottle was ok, not advanced, just not that great, rather foursquare. 60% Chard, 40% Pinot. Superbowl, my place. (3040 views)
Tasted by winepog on 2/3/2016 & rated 88 points: Would have rated higher, but I think it missed its peak. Good. Baked, yeasty, bready, but lost its mojo. (2574 views)
Tasted by Nanda on 12/13/2014 & rated 89 points: This bottle was fairly advanced for a 1999. Light effervescence. Mature nutty profile on the nose. Palate has mature apple fruit, mushroom and yeasty notes. Nice flavor complexity and good balance with enough cut. I would drink up - already seems long-in-the-tooth. (3312 views)
Tasted by Two Winos on 3/8/2014 & rated 90 points: Very nice. Not much yeasty, brioche quality. A little sweet, which surprised me. Maybe I'm just not used to drinking bubbles with a little age on them. Although the 90 Dom I recently had was very different (yes...and a very different price-point!). It is easy to drink and not at all offensive. (3842 views)
Tasted by bags on 2/15/2014: right: definitely on the way down. 18 months after my last bottle which was terrific, this was barely enjoyable, but clearly oxidizing. Undrinkable for the first 15 minutes, it settled into something pleasant. Drink soon and give some thought to pairing. (3945 views)
Tasted by dkstar1 on 2/2/2014: Past it's prime for sure. But nice caramel notes and a nice hue. Drink up. (1987 views)
Tasted by brooklynJ&O on 1/3/2014 & rated 79 points: bleh. OTH? (2087 views)
Tasted by thesternowl on 12/23/2013: No formal notes but this bottle exhibited some characteristics that I would more readily associate with a nice tawny port. It's not unpleasant but quite a shock after the Lallier and P-J we drank earlier. (1682 views)
Tasted by scott w on 9/12/2013 & rated 90 points: Just delicious! creamy yeasty apples and plenty of acid. Drank one donated one wish I had more. (1404 views)
Tasted by Didman on 12/2/2012 flawed bottle: Undrikable. Plenty of bubbles, but dark color and nasty flavor. Totally unlike prior bottles opened. (2254 views)
Tasted by bags on 7/29/2012: outstanding. very yeasty entry with terrific acidity on the back. this is a very versatile champagne: delicious by itself or with food (2747 views)
Tasted by winepog on 5/20/2012 & rated 92 points: nice foamy, creamy, yeasty.....aroma of baked bread with apples... (2767 views)
Tasted by Didman on 5/14/2012 & rated 92 points: Nice fine bubbles with a taste that dances on the palate. (2754 views)
Tasted by winepog on 5/3/2012 & rated 92 points: Rich and creamy, very nice, golden and toasty...yeast and baked apple (2555 views)
Tasted by thesternowl on 4/16/2012 & rated 90 points: Popped and poured into Reidel Sommelier Vintage Champagne glasses. Rich, golden color with a very decent amount of fine bubbles. I get brioche, marcona almonds and this intense mineral component that I quite fancy. Nice acidity. Anyway, I found this to be a great compliment a Bond film and a baguette with some Chaource. Although I don't think there is much to hold out for in terms of evolution, it should have plenty of stuffing to keep it real for the forseeable future. That being said, I've got two bottles left and I'll get to them at my leisure. (2326 views)
Tasted by pbaek on 4/7/2012: A very rich, full Champagne that shows its age by flavors of yeast, brioche, ripe apple and nuts. There is also lime and minerals underneath. A wine that should be served with food as opposed to as an aperitif. With Niels and AD at home. (1883 views)
Tasted by David_T on 3/20/2011 & rated 91 points: Smooth nose of apple and ginger. A bit dessert-like on the palate, with continued apple, ginger, and spice notes. Very smooth and delicious. (2904 views)
Tasted by Dave Canada on 1/1/2011 & rated 93 points: This was rocking! fullbodied with autolytic character! (3258 views)
Tasted by Dave Canada on 11/18/2010 & rated 91 points: I just love this.....citrus, yeast, minerals....nice finish.. (3411 views)
Tasted by Todd French on 10/21/2010 & rated 91 points: Again, a screaming bargain if you caught it at $25.00 as I did. It is gaining in complexity as well, with more of a nutty component in the nose, and the fruit has moved from a citrus type to more of a sweet/tart apple. (3592 views)
Tasted by RobinHeimdahl on 8/15/2010 & rated 89 points: Very interesting champagne! More of red apples, brown sugar, figs and spices than the usual green apples and citrus. Overall very good! (3528 views)
Tasted by DaleW on 4/5/2010: Nice larger framed bubbly, bready, good acidity under the big body. This isn't the most complex, but for price it's a good deal if you like heavier styles. B (3832 views)
Tasted by pizzler on 4/3/2010 & rated 90 points: Great QPR...vintage champagne that tastes good at a cheap price. While it lacked precise facets and definition, it had good balance and worked well with food. (3761 views)
Tasted by Todd French on 1/31/2010 & rated 93 points: The color is quite beautiful on this wine - a deep golden color, not a rather light yellow as with most Champagne. An expressive nose of crusty bread, yeast, nuts, citrus, and perhaps a bit of mushroom as well - definitely a preferred style of mine. The palate is rich, some custard, nuttiness, sweet and tart citrus characteristics, and a brioche-like finish combined with some light citrus and floral components. A highly enjoyable Champagne for me, more for the fact that it focuses more on the yeast/bread/brioche components than the citrus. (4173 views)
Tasted by Ekoostik on 1/22/2010: I dont want to rate because this is just not my style of champagne. Heavy, buttery, toasty and quite like an evolved still wine of sorts with minimal bubbles. Seems evolved, yet does have some zip and zest on the finish which is quite nice. I bought a sixer of these from the $25 Zachys sale and I still feel its good value even though its not in my wheelhouse style. But beware if you like crisp, sharp, bubbly champers. (3938 views)

France - When it comes to wine, France stands alone. No other country can beat it in terms of consistent quality and diversity. And while many of its Region, Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne most obviously, produce wine as rare, as sought-after and nearly as expensive as gold, there are just as many obscurities and values to be had from little known appellations throughout the country. To learn everything there is to know about French wine would take a lifetime. To understand and appreciate French wine, one only has to begin tasting them. Sub-Region:

Champagne - The French region of Champagne (including the cities of Rheims, Épernay, and Aÿ) was the first region in the world to make sparkling wine in any quantity. Today, the name of the region is synonymous with the finest of all sparkling wines, and wine-making traditions of Champagne have become role models for sparkling wine producers, worldwide. Surprisingly, the region of Champagne is now responsible for only one bottle in 12 of all sparkling wine produced. Styles of champagne range in sweetness ranging from an extra brut or brut 0, to the basic brut to demi sec to doux; some houses produce single vintage champagnes and others produce non-vintage (or incorporate wines/grapes of multiple vintages), often to preserve a specific taste; combinations of grape varietals; and colors, including a rosé. There are several sub-appellations, including the Valley of the Marnes river running from Épernay west, Massif de Saint-Thierry north and west of Rheims, Valley of the Ardre, the Mountains of Rheims (between Rheims and Épernay), Côte des Blancs, Côte de Sézanne, and Côte des Bar in the South. Champagne wine only uses three grape varietals (cépages): Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier.
