Community Tasting Notes (average 91.7 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 53 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by kabert on 12/14/2023 & rated 94 points: What a dynamite chardonnay - the first bottle I had back in October was awesome, and it wasn’t a fluke! This second bottle (of @5) was just stunningly good. Incredibly delicious white fruits; full bodied; no noticeable oak or alcohol/heat. Half yesterday and half today (recorked in fridge overnight) — tasted just as good/perhaps even better today. Bravo! (665 views)
Tasted by Slaz on 11/30/2023 & rated 90 points: This time/bottle tasted overextracted and possibly too oaky. Benefited from decanting, though, still has plenty of energy. (777 views)
Tasted by kabert on 10/27/2023 & rated 93 points: An American Beauty. Delicious crowd pleasing white fruits, full-bodied; got better and better as it warmed up from cellar temp. (734 views)
Tasted by buckeye76 on 8/8/2023 & rated 94 points: Similar notes as previous tasting. Pears, citrus and floral in the nose. Concentrated flavors with apples, citrus, and hints of minerality. Very smooth going down with very nice acidity and great mouthfeel. Complex, medium to full bodied, well balanced, and a long finish. (817 views)
Tasted by buckeye76 on 8/7/2022 & rated 94 points: Pears, citrus, nuts, and floral in the nose. Concentrated flavors with apples, citrus, and hints of minerality. Very smooth going down with very nice acidity and great mouthfeel. Complex, medium to full bodied, well balanced, and a long finish. (1892 views)
Tasted by rmalloy on 2/12/2022 & rated 89 points: Big, creamy, a little too alcoholic. Polished but not much character. (2245 views)
Tasted by jlgnml on 1/30/2022 & rated 92 points: Drank over 3 nights and progressively got better each night. A good decant is required. Hold/drink (2190 views)
Tasted by gmbdds on 12/29/2021: Mild oxidation on the nose. Advanced golden color. Apple, citrus and tropical fruit. Not bad, but not quite right. Not scored. (2087 views)
Tasted by jlgnml on 7/22/2021 & rated 93 points: Delicious. Good mouthfeel. Hold. (2611 views)
Tasted by rmalloy on 7/19/2021 & rated 92 points: Good chardonnay with excellent concentration. Moderately oaky. Excessively buttery to my tastes, but not gross, and there is plenty of acidic balance. Brightened by flavors of meyer lemon and sea salt. Has room to improve with age. (1229 views)
Tasted by Ben Christiansen on 4/16/2021: A touch of evergreen to the strong and full fruit note. That is evolved and in perfect form right now. (1796 views)
Tasted by jvphoto on 6/25/2020 & rated 90 points: Overall a solid wine. Ripe yellow apples, apricot chutney and Meyer lemon, there's the vanilla/oak but is pretty defined with acidity and minerality. Didn't think it flabby at all. (808 views)
Tasted by Donjcorleone on 5/3/2020 flawed bottle: Poxed! Not what it should have been as it was aromatically challenged and soft and unfocused on the palate. (2509 views)
Tasted by smphelps on 3/21/2020 & rated 88 points: Interesting given the note of just over three years ago that the wine "appeared older than it was". Still does, now tasting older than it is. Fruits fully reserved, and a touch of unpleasant harshness is present. Medium length. (2602 views)
Tasted by JM_MadTown on 3/17/2020 & rated 89 points: This wine is showing okay with some oak and nice citrus fruit. I was hoping for a little more, but nevertheless it is an enjoyable wine. (741 views)
Tasted by JM_MadTown on 3/6/2020 & rated 89 points: So this bottle is not as nice as our last one. While still very good, it lacked the complexity of the previous bottle. It does have nice citrus fruit, a little oak on the palate followed by good acidity and minerality. The finish is sort of off, however. Maybe some bottle variation. (706 views)
Tasted by Barry JoAnn on 2/22/2020: Every bitter (717 views)
Tasted by jreis on 12/31/2019: From magnum. Still a baby, but lovely nonetheless. Beautiful golden color, nose of pears, quince and limestone. Excellent texture and body, nice blend of sweet apple/pear fruit and crisp limestone filled acidity. Has some coiled power that promises even better things down the road, but a great way to kick off New Year’s Eve. (2468 views)
Tasted by PMJak11 on 11/20/2019 & rated 98 points: One of the best whites I’ve ever had! Dark gold color. Deep nose of butter and nuts. Extremely complex but well balanced. Butter, cream, pineapple, and camomile. Long finish. Absolutely fantastic! (2530 views)
Tasted by JM_MadTown on 10/3/2019 & rated 92 points: So we opened a 2nd bottle of this wine tonight and it was in good condition. Hurray! The nose is a little wooly, but it has subtle oak and some vanilla, good citrus fruit, including lemon and lemon curd, a full mouthfeel, nice acidity and a medium finish. (767 views)
Tasted by JM_MadTown on 10/2/2019 flawed bottle: This bottle was oxidized, unfortunately. Just purchased from a wine shop. (697 views)
Tasted by Slaz on 9/7/2019 & rated 94 points: Gorgeous take on mountain Chardonnay fruit. So much vigor, energy, and vibrancy. Full throttle but also with excellent balance and great backbone/structure. Benefited from air and kept improving over 2 hours of breathing. Not yet at its peak. Worth the money and more. A very much memorable wine. (2539 views)
Tasted by Bob23 on 2/22/2019: Oxidized. Fascinating creme brûlée notes, and nice toast. (2520 views)
Tasted by spendergast on 2/6/2019 & rated 94 points: Wonderful chardonnay but needs some time. (2493 views)
Tasted by andrewdodd86 on 2/3/2018 & rated 91 points: Heavy on the oak, but still nice. Needs time. (3222 views)

The Chardonnay Grape

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson

Santa Cruz Mountains

Santa Cruz Mountains Winegrowers Association | Wikipedia

Once referred to by wine writers as the Chaine d'Or -- or "golden chain" -- the Santa Cruz Mountains AVA sits above Silicon Valley, running along the craggy range next to the Pacific on some of the prettiest parts of Northern California. The area supports more than 75 wineries, despite being limited by geography and high land prices.

In 1981 the Santa Cruz Mountains Viticultural Appellation became federally recognized, one of the first American viticultural areas to be defined by geophysical and climatic factors. The appellation encompasses the Santa Cruz Mountain range, from Half Moon Bay in the north, to Mount Madonna in the south. The east and west boundaries are defined by elevation, extending down to 800 feet in the east and 400 feet in the west.
