Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 91.3 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 55 notes)

Tasted by drfloyd on 7/31/2022: Nice dark color - just a gorgeous, deep nose - seductive, luscious - dark, dark cherry - hints of sage, mint, etc. The nose is the star of this wine - faded tannins but still present - nice acidity gives it a juicy and long finish. Impressive here - still rather youthful. (868 views)
Tasted by OttawaB on 6/6/2022 & rated 92 points: Nice balance of aged notes. But still with red berry fruit. Very enjoyable overall, dusty tannins, not bitter but not sweet. (838 views)
Tasted by Bosbevok on 3/13/2022 & rated 94 points: Garnet to russet coloured with a distinctive clay rim. Wonderful nose of delicate red and white petals that are spring fresh. Followed by lots of light red fruit such as raspberries and ripe red grapes. The red fruit continues the delicate pattern on the palate bringing a silky mouthfeel. The wine is now 16 years old and shows lots of old world flavours too like dark choc and farm notes. At perfect equilibrium of constituents. Drink now! (950 views)
Tasted by SchlaepDog on 11/12/2021 & rated 95 points: Beautiful nose of sour cherry, underbrush, spring flowers, balsamic, and saddle leather.

On the palate, it shows tremendous depth and exuberant youthfulness. Layers of red fruit are balanced by fine tannin and complimented by mineral, tobacco, and leather.

The finish lingers long and clean, no astringent drying that can be often found in aged Sangiovese. Great bottle that could have gone longer and it got better and better through dinner. Just entering prime drinking window, drink now - 2026. (1073 views)
Tasted by SICILIAN-SOLE on 11/3/2021 & rated 95 points: Pours a dark garnet in the glass. The nose has red berry compote, soil and dried, woody herbs. On the palate there is mature red fruit, rich soil and orange peel. All wrapped up in a fine grainy acidity. A truly fine wine in a great drinking window. (1016 views)
Tasted by winemaker on 7/27/2021 & rated 92 points: Nice solid BdM. (627 views)
Tasted by Counselor Chris on 1/2/2021 flawed bottle: Yet another corked Italian wine. (989 views)
Tasted by Bosbevok on 11/15/2020 & rated 92 points: Definitely into its drinking window. Wide clay brick edges with a garnet belly. Notes of fig, cherry some graphite on the nose. With some decanting brings more red aged fruit. Cigar box and rose petal, classic old world flavours on the palate. (1010 views)
Tasted by jdreillyjr on 5/17/2020 & rated 89 points: A bit jammy, maybe past prime (1010 views)
Tasted by chablis28 on 5/16/2020 & rated 93 points: Stood btl up for a day to drop sediment. Turns out, there wasn't much. Opened 3 hours prior to dinner and finding this fully open and elegantly resolved decided to merely slow ox in glass and btl. Not opaque nor translucent ruby - garnet color with lighted edges. Aromas of light berries, dried roses and underbrush. A seamless, svelte and weightless palate with supple red fruit, tobacco leaf, mineral, spice and herbs. I really like the lift, balance and finesse of this wine. A very real, un-manipulated version of Brunello, many of us, hope for. Fully mature. Ill aim to drink my last btl within the next 3 years. Not sure this goes 5 more without drop off. 13.5% Alc 93pts+ (1271 views)
Tasted by wynnewood500 on 12/22/2019: Served at Holiday party. No tasting notes. Drinking nicely. (1057 views)
Tasted by SICILIAN-SOLE on 7/7/2019 & rated 94 points: Mature red fruit, wet forest, leather and tobacco. At it's peak. Drink up! (1021 views)
Tasted by Vinnut on 7/1/2019 & rated 93 points: Dark reddish-garnet in color with ever-so-slight clearing at the edges. Forward, fragrant & attractive nose of ripe fruit aromas of dark cherries, blackberries & plums with overtones of earthy/dusty & floral notes of roses, spices, dried herbs, some tar, mocha, sandalwood & cedar in the background. Full bodied with a very good concentration of well balanced & smooth textured, ripe fruit flavors of cherries, blackberries & plums with spices, earthy, herbs, minerals, cocoa & a hint of oak. Long lingering finish. Drinks quite well at present with decanting & airing but has the structure & fruit to continue development with additional aging if cellared properly. (1008 views)
Tasted by kronfeld on 3/16/2018 & rated 90 points: This has finally come around — my last bottle, of course. None of the faults noted in earlier tasting notes. Integrated, balanced, seamless feel and taste. (1386 views)
Tasted by kronfeld on 5/5/2017 & rated 88 points: saddle leather nose with dark fruit, sour cherry palate. Harsh mouthfeel and overall unbalanced. Didn't improve over three hours, although softened just a bit. (2321 views)
Tasted by guido23 on 3/14/2017 & rated 90 points: Pleasant Brunello with occasional flashes of brilliance. Popped, decanted, and consumed over five hours. Most of the time this was tasty but on the lean side. Every so often, though, it seemed to be really opening up - only to revert to its previous state. I'm not sure what to make of the "sparks" of potential but hopefully they will become more enduring with age. (2205 views)
Tasted by kronfeld on 12/14/2016 & rated 88 points: Bit rustic and woody. Needs more time or extensive aeration. (2224 views)
Tasted by Eurocave on 3/27/2016 & rated 89 points: Easter dinner with family. (2490 views)
Tasted by Eurocave on 2/14/2016 flawed bottle: flawed (2352 views)
Tasted by nschmidt on 11/9/2015 & rated 92 points: Tasty sangiovese that could use a little more time. (2126 views)
Tasted by TedescoCellars on 4/23/2015 & rated 94 points: Very good. 2006 is an outstanding vintage! Ripe cherry, fig, hint of tobacco on nose. Medium tannins and finish, dark ruby red color. (2555 views)
Tasted by gquigs on 5/9/2014 & rated 90 points: I enjoyed this more than most. Cherries and went well with cheese we had (3724 views)
Tasted by GoBlue2002 on 4/30/2014 & rated 91 points: This opened up slowly, but in the end I really enjoyed it.
Old world aromas and flavors of leather, tar, dried cherry, plum, and spice. Full mouthfeel with enough tannins for grip but still smooth enough to drink on its own.
My wife, who prefers new world fruit to old world charm, gave this an 88 -- I enjoyed it much more.
I have 1 more bottle of this, and will attempt to hold another 3-5 years. (3158 views)
Tasted by cephomer on 2/8/2014 & rated 90 points: Red crimson color. Nose of cherries, some tobacco. Medium bodied, lots of sour cherries, some tar, soft tannins. Not much else going on. Somewhat enjoyable bottle, if not overly complex or memorable wine (3513 views)
Tasted by mreinhard74@gmail.com on 8/27/2013 & rated 89 points: Never really developed in the glass. One dimensional. (3952 views)
Tasted by Pebben on 8/25/2013 & rated 90 points: From memory: Tart red cherries, dried autumn leafs, earth and stable on the nose and palate. Medium bodied with high acidity and pretty rough tannins. Has potential, but still too young. Hold for another three to five years. (3487 views)
Tasted by Rezy13 on 5/3/2013: Medium density crimson with copper rim; nose of cedar, red and dark fruit, a little tar, bitter chocolate; slightly bitter red fruit on the palate, some thought it was Barolo, a little muddy and hot; put on weight with air, almost good but slightly disjointed. (2699 views)
Tasted by Foodievines on 4/21/2013 & rated 90 points: Nice old world brunello. (2788 views)
Tasted by gigmoney on 12/25/2012: Too young to rate. Starting to come around. Bricking on edges. (3019 views)
Tasted by pbjosh on 12/14/2012: Fully ripe but not overly so, quite dusty and irony. Well concentrated, vibrant and energetic with healthy but not obtrusive acid. Very nice and the pieces are there for a long and positive evolution. (3569 views)
Tasted by Delli on 11/24/2012 & rated 89 points: Crimson with brown notes and modest transparency. Earthy nose with sage and understated cherries. Tuscan minerality dominates the palate and finish. Tannins are already quite round for such a young wine Clearly a brunello but I expected more. 5+12+15+7=89 (2635 views)
Tasted by jwsmith on 10/31/2012 & rated 91 points: Oddly the 2005 taste better right now... along with 2004 (2447 views)
Tasted by SanPietroJohn on 10/2/2012 & rated 91 points: Great brunello (2617 views)
Tasted by chablis28 on 7/8/2012 & rated 91 points: Much more open on the nose and palate both with lovely texture on day 2. Which means I should have given this a lot more air on day1 instead of popping and pouring. Classic Brunello flavors. Leave my remaining btls for 2016+. (2744 views)
Tasted by jwsmith on 5/25/2012 & rated 89 points: One dimensional not as good as past bottles. (2808 views)
Tasted by Maestro on 5/12/2012 & rated 89 points: Muscular and full of taste, but quite edgy, a bit disjointed, almost rustic at times. An honest wine that goes well with honest food, but not elegant or restrained. Secondary aromatics will help, so give it more time and it may become better integrated. (2931 views)
Tasted by halprewitt on 4/5/2012 & rated 94 points: Requires air time for the taste to come alive. (2939 views)
Tasted by steffenpelz on 2/19/2012: This one marks three winners in a row. I have had many Pertimali Brunellos reaching back to the 80s, but the 2006 is really the best Pertimali Brunello I have ever tasted. It is everything that I look for in Brunello. It is almost a wine from a bygone era. No over-extraction, no massive oak treatment, no non-sense winemaking. The fruit is wonderfully ripe yet restrained, the acidity is in perfect balance which is making it a wine that's primed to be had with food, and the wine has soul. There is tons of plush cherry and plum fruit with a smattering of earth and dried herbs. Sage and rosemary aromas in particular seemed to crop up. The complexity of this wine is astounding, and even at this early age, the greatness of this wine, vintage, and appellation is crystal clear. 100% Sangiovese Grosso. This is a wine to own by the case. (3166 views)
Tasted by Loren Sonkin on 12/28/2011 & rated 94 points: A bunch of Brunellos: The group's WOTN. Purple/ruby in color. Great nose for my tastes. Cherries, cherry powder, slight mint, earthy. Mild tannins. Sour cherries. Good acidity. Long finish. Opened up with cheese and air beautifully. (4236 views)
Tasted by jwsmith on 12/9/2011 & rated 89 points: Disjointed at the moment hope for improvement tin the future, (3371 views)
Tasted by Philippe_C on 5/21/2011 & rated 88 points: Medium nose of ripe dark cherries, pain d'épices, hint of volatile acidity, herbal... in the mouth, red berries, nice acidity, a bit too tannic and short (3680 views)

Sangiovese

SANGIOVESE: (Pronounced "sahn-joh-vhe-se").
Sangiovese - Italy's claim to fame, the pride of Tuscany. Traditionally made, the wines are full of cherry fruit, earth, and cedar. It produces Chianti (Classico), Rosso di Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino, Rosso di Montepulciano, Montefalco Rosso, and many others. Sangiovese is also the backbone in many of the acclaimed, modern-styled "Super-Tuscans", where it is blended with Bordeaux varietals (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc) and typically aged in French oak barrels, resulting a wine primed for the international market in the style of a typical California cabernet: oaky, high-alcohol, and a ripe, jammy, fruit-forward profile.[16]

Semi-classic grape grown in the Tuscany region of Italy. Used to produce the Chianti and other Tuscan red wines. Has many clonal versions, two of which seem to predominate. The Sangiovese Grosso clone Brunello variety is used for the dark red, traditionally powerful and slow-maturing "Brunello di Montalcino" wine. The other is the Sangiovese Piccolo, also known under the historical synonym name Sangioveto, used for standard Chianti Classico DOC wines. Old vine derived wine is often used in the better versions, needing several years ageing to reach peak. A third clone, Morellino, is used in a popular wine blend with the same name found in the southern part of the province. Recent efforts in California with clones of this variety are very promising, producing medium-bodied reds with rich cherry or plumlike flavors and aromas. Among the available clonal versions are R6 and R7, derived from the Montalcino region of Italy, having average productivity/ripening and producing small berries on medium size clusters. R10 and R24 are well-recommended. R23, listed as deriving from the Emilia-Romagna region, has good vigor with medium-small clusters with earlier ripening. R102 derives from the Montepulciano region and reported to have average vigor with moderate productivity that results in higher sugar levels and good acidity from medium-small berries on medium-small clusters. Has synonym name of Nielluccio where grown in Corsica.
