Community Tasting Notes (average 90.5 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 79 notes)

Tasted by d'Artagnan on 7/23/2023: Un vin encore massif, concentré et paraissant trop extrait. Besoin d’air. Je l'ai mieux goûté l'an dernier à pareille date. (553 views)
Tasted by d'Artagnan on 7/24/2022 & rated 89 points: Beau vin du Rhône, plein, épicé, en pleine forme. 89-90 pts (1299 views)
Tasted by SLOFred on 1/17/2022 & rated 92 points: Still has fruit and tannins and at least 5 years of life. Great QPR. Seemed a little heavy in the Syrah, which is fine with me. Tannins have not softened yet, but are soft enough. (1407 views)
Tasted by sdahar on 12/25/2021 & rated 89 points: past peak. Fruit mostly gone but worked with my beef in wine stew. (1357 views)
Tasted by zinnut on 12/22/2021 & rated 93 points: Wow! This is great. A big wine full of blackberry. A lot of structure still at this age suggests more potential down the road. This is just delicious. Wish I had some more of this. (1402 views)
Tasted by Hansvo on 7/14/2021 & rated 91 points: I was surprised how youthful this wine still is; as well as it drinks right now, I would be inclined to give this a couple more years in the cellar. (1443 views)
Tasted by Altonplace on 1/20/2021 & rated 87 points: Mild and well balanced but without any sign of boldness. Could have lost edge with age. Pleasant but unremarkable. (1312 views)
Tasted by 312 on 12/31/2020 & rated 93 points: This wine is drinking even better than our two prior reviews on 3/10/2013 and 7/18/2020 when we gave it a 92.

7/18/2020 - I LIKE THIS WINE: 92 Points
Popped and poured. Dark ruby. Licorice, black cherry, cassis and pepper on the nose. Full legs. Excellent mouthfeel, well structured. After a decade the fruits are still fresh and lively. Notes of black cherry, blackberry, plum and licorice with good tannins. Long finish. All in all, an excellent wine that is drinking very well now with every indication that it will continue to do so for years to come.

3/10/2013 - I LIKE THIS WINE: 92 Points
Popped and poured at home. Writing notes on second night, which is very similar to first night. Deep purple to blackberry color. Nose of grape and clove. Well balanced tannins. Notes of licorice, black tea, violet and vanilla. Good lingering finish with light touch of acid. Drinking well now. Will enjoy seeing how our case ages. (1004 views)
Bouteille imparfaite? 89-90 pts (1499 views)
Tasted by Amerique on 11/26/2020 & rated 94 points: Rich, delicious huge dark black raspberry fruit, excellent structure, deep complex flavors, needs time to open up, clearly this wine has emerged beautifully with 10 years of aging, probably needs another 5 years before its peak at least, great wine (1118 views)

Tasted by Eudemis on 6/8/2020: 14.5% alcohol. G, S, Mrvdr in unspecified proportions. Distinctive embossed bottle. Superb long dense cork. The colour is dark and youthful.
The nose is promising with blackberries and some black olive. The mouth has good elements like acidity and sappiness, but it is thrown out of balance by the protruding alcohol. Very little enjoyment as a result.

PS: comparing with my previous notes, I see that there has been precious little evolution since 2017, and I am beginning to wonder if this will ever calm down. Do not repurchase. (1142 views)

4/5 (1224 views)
Tasted by petec-s on 4/1/2020 & rated 91 points: An absolute delight. (1223 views)
Tasted by SLOFred on 3/22/2020 & rated 91 points: Nice Rhone. Not tarry like my prior bottle, but more accurately described as "smokey." Very rich, full bodied, tones of dark fruit. Good QPR. (1160 views)
Tasted by Eudemis on 2/6/2020: 14.5% alcohol. G, S, Mrvdr in unspecified proportions. Very good cork with no wine penetration. Very deep colour showing a youthful purple hue upon pouring; this is getting annoying, am I the only one who ages around here? (premoxed whites do not count!!).
The nose does not escape displaying a whiff of alcohol, but there are also aromas of liquorice (faint) and red berries. In the mouth, the wine shows better balance than what I was expecting, with liquorice, some herbs and excellent acidity in the finish. A good match for striploin steak aged in Himalayan salt (seriously good).
I like this wine a lot better than the last time I sampled it; hopefully this is the start of a new era as we both age gracefully...
I am now more optimistic about the potential of this wine in the next ten years. (1158 views)
Tasted by WineDuq on 1/15/2020 & rated 93 points: Popped and poured. Took a half hour or so to open up. Dark almost purple (the Syrah), no bricking at all. You can smell the Syrah on the nose with notes of licorice and tar. Also has that dusty southern Rhone character. Silky and medium to full bodied on the palate. Nicely ripe with decent acidity. the fruit is fresh not baked in any way. Decent length on the finish, a bit hot, white pepper, plummy red fruits. Still has some tannic bite to it. Really nice, especially considering the price. Blew away a 2015 Charvin I had a few days ago, (1133 views)

5/5 (1253 views)
Tasted by Lordswood on 7/15/2019 & rated 90 points: I enjoyed this bottle more than previously. Smokey tarry fruit on a bloody, full bodied carriage. Tannins work well holding it all in check and bringing structure. (1369 views)

90+ pts (2143 views)
Tasted by Lordswood on 8/23/2018 & rated 87 points: Lovely nose of blackberries wafts out of the glass. The palate is a little dumb in comparison, with plenty of tannin and acidity still around. Will the fruit prevail as it opens up? I think it does... (1967 views)
Tasted by SLOFred on 6/9/2018 & rated 92 points: This is a great wine with great QPR. It has a lovely smoky/tarry character up front that I really like. I would definitely buy this wine again. (2266 views)
Tasted by petec-s on 3/3/2018 & rated 91 points: Big bold stuff, liquorice and herbs, dense across the palate, needs a few years. (2393 views)
Tasted by Loren Sonkin on 4/26/2017 & rated 91 points: Gidgondas and Lirac (Chris H's home): This finished in second place (behind the 2007). Deep purple in color. The nose has nice black cherries. On the palate, black raspberries. Fierce tannins. Deep but tight. Nice juicy texture. I suspect that this eventually ties or exceeds the 2007 but it will certainly need time. (4360 views)
Tasted by sbern on 3/30/2017 & rated 91 points: Deep dark fruit, smooth tannins. Delicious. (3158 views)
Tasted by Eudemis on 3/12/2017: 14.5% alcohol on the label (maybe more by my reckoning). Long cork of reasonable density and little wine penetration. The colour is very youthful with a purple tinge. The nose is rich and penetrating, but obviously carried by the alcohol, with some dusty notes (in a good way). The mouth is again dominated by the alcohol, with some fruit trying hard to get through.
At this stage, the wine is clearly unbalanced (for my palate at any rate), but there are enough promising elements to stop me giving it the thumbs down. To be revisited in five years time. (2880 views)
Tasted by Hermosabritdad on 2/4/2017 & rated 90 points: Really coming into its own. Tasting like a decent cndp. Significantly better than the 2009. Lovely nose and palette. Red berries with a hint of spice and slight chocolate. Nice and long and some complexity. Seems significantly better than before. Feels like it's right in it's drinking window right now. (2808 views)
Tasted by Golf_Wine on 1/12/2017 & rated 86 points: Fairly decent wine. Needs air. In my glass for at least an hour before I started to enjoy it. Oak, tannin, blue fruits, cherry, some violets, leather, dark chocolate. A bit of a hard/edgy wine but if you like Rhones as a whole I think you'd be happy. (2702 views)
Tasted by Villon on 1/7/2017 & rated 92 points: Très riche et décadent. me semble encore un peu jeune et sur le fruit primaire. 91-92 (1657 views)
Tasted by The Fickle Palate on 12/24/2016: Super-concentrated, blackcurrant jam and prune on the nose with a silky, smokey texture. The tannin has all but softened out which leaves the alcohol as the driving force and the heat does dominate on the finish. That being said, it's a rich, warming, hearty Rhone blend that punches well above its weight and ready for drinking now ***1/2 (1358 views)
Tasted by SLOFred on 10/31/2016 & rated 91 points: This is a lovely wine. An immediate Vinturi is beneficial. Tremendous purple color, tarry nose, very Rhone like flavors. Lirac is clearly an areal that is on the upswing. I would buy this producer in a heartbeat in the future. (1658 views)
(2514 views)
Tasted by SLOFred on 3/11/2016 & rated 90 points: Great wine, but still clearly too young. I initially decanted 30 minutes, but way too tannic to drink. Ran it through a Vinturi and what a difference. The fruit is great, so more bottle aging will be rewarded. If you drink before 5 years from now, I would recommend an immediate Vinturi. (2386 views)
Tasted by Amerique on 1/5/2016 & rated 93 points: Wine opened up 1 day after using the coravin. I love Domaine de la Mordoree! (2753 views)
Tasted by SLOFred on 8/3/2015 & rated 91 points: Very nice wine. Color is deep, deep purple. Nose typical of Rhone. Flavors are great with some tar from the Syrah. Definitely a decant is helpful. Really opened up after 2 hours. I would recommend more aging. This wine has plenty of "stuff" to last. If you drink before 2-4 years from now, consider a 2 hour decant through a Vinturi. (3449 views)
Tasted by petec-s on 12/19/2014 & rated 89 points: Huge complex and well made beast of a wine, surely needs a good few years yet. 89-93+ ish (4364 views)
Tasted by SLOFred on 11/17/2014 & rated 91 points: This is a beautiful wine. Deep, deep almost black garnet color. Classic Rhone tones on the nose. No trouble telling where it is from. Only mistake I made is drinking it now! It either needs a 2-4 hour decant or another 3-5 years in the bottle to really show itself. I think it has 93-94 point potential and at $30. . . . (3779 views)
Tasted by SLOFred on 6/22/2014 & rated 92 points: Not quite as good as the last bottle I had, but still nice. i will definitely age this a bit more. (4441 views)
Tasted by Amerique on 5/24/2014 & rated 91 points: Rich, full-bodied dark strawberry fruit, very well balanced and integrated, restrained, lots of tannin, short finish, needs time to soft and open up (4064 views)
Tasted by BMG Wine on 1/26/2014: Way too young. 9 hour decant wasn't even close to enough. Will revisit in 2015 (4192 views)
Tasted by Loren Sonkin on 9/15/2013 & rated 91 points: Lots of wines at Tommy's Clambake (Tommy's): Love this wine. As good or better than a whole of CdPs. Purple in color. A nose of spice, dark cherries, black raspberries and floral notes. Still young and will make great drinking for a decade. (4726 views)
90-91 + pts (3424 views)
Tasted by kostaslonis on 7/12/2013 & rated 88 points: Clear, deep ruby color.
Clean, medium intensity, strange assembly of aromas here with a thick ripe fruity core of red and black berries and currants, plum jam, iodine, curred meat, young
Dry, body medium, intensity medium, medium+ alcohol (14.5%), medium+ acidity, medium+ tannins which are round, ripe red and black fruis (same as nose), juicy blackcurrant marmelade, it brings out the warmth of the terroir, medium finish.
Very good wine, mid priced. Drinking now but could age further. A nice alternative to Châteauneuf-du-Pape. (3295 views)
Tasted by Miceri on 7/8/2013 & rated 86 points: Dark purple color; deep fruit, alcoholic nose; quite biting tannins, cooked, good powerful fruity body but appearing too unbalanced, tannic and cooked (3014 views)
Tasted by cliffo41 on 3/13/2013 & rated 92 points: Dark red in the glass, seemed a little hotter than the 14.5% abv would lead one to expect. Long finish with smooth tannins at the end. A really big wine that could probably benefit from some more time in the bottle. (3057 views)
Tasted by 312 on 3/10/2013 & rated 92 points: Popped and poured at home. Writing notes on second night, which is very similar to first night. Deep purple to blackberry color. Nose of grape and clove. Well balanced tannins. Notes of licorice, black tea, violet and vanilla. Good lingering finish with light touch of acid. Drinking well now.  Tasted by S1 on 12/26/2012: Drank while watching "Bottle Shock."
Is it French? Is it American? I'm having a difficult time deciding. From the initial nostril-burning whiff I can see why someone gave it 95 points. It certainly has lots of mentholized dark cherry extraction and plenty of heat. As it gets some air I detect hints of black tea and some earthy wild herb with sweet licorice and some mint. The Mourvedre does give it a funky backbone that I find appealing but mostly it tastes alcoholic and disjointed. After several hours it has calmed quite a lot and is beginning to balance a bit. Even now it is definitely in the modern style but it has settled into a wine with some structure which should age in the medium term. By the end of the bottle and the film I have made my decision--it is French.

Tasted by Loren Sonkin on 11/21/2012 & rated 91 points: Eric Keating Wines and a few others (Lou's): Tommy brought this sample in from the car. I think he said he had been showing it to customers in the afternoon. Purple in color. The nose is nice. Black and red raspberries on the nose. some spice and some violets. Tastes like a very nice CdP. (4409 views)
Tasted by Philippe_C on 10/27/2012 & rated 92 points: Powerfull nose of black cherries, touch of vanilla, coffee, bacon... in the mouth, very silky tannins, very mineral, ripe black fruit, juicy, great wine!! (3840 views)
Tasted by Double D on 10/15/2012 & rated 92 points: A nice vintage in Lirac not just CdP. A bit on the tannic and acidic side but went great with a Chinese take out meal. Probably has some staying power. (3238 views)
Tasted by MotoMannequin on 9/21/2012: Decanted at cellar temp, poured a small glass and returned the decanter to the cellar for about an hour. Initially the nose is very much shut down. A little bit of wood, and nothing else. I fear some amount of TCA. But, on the palate the wine explodes with a rush of raspberry and blackberry, black pepper, then quickly morphs into oak, with mouth-coating, chewy tannin. Super-intense wine that's probably misbehaving just a bit given it's just a toddler. All the stuffing is there, for those that like the Mordorée style, this is one to stock up on, and give some time sideways. (3417 views)
Tasted by drwine2001 on 8/18/2012: A Rhone Flight (K&L Wines, San Francisco): Dark color. Lots of wood evident and like an essence of black licorice in the mouth. Just short of being syrupy, but still, not at all a style I enjoy. (3854 views)
Tasted by rjonwine@gmail.com on 4/28/2012 & rated 90 points: 2012 Hospice du Rhone Grand Tastings; 4/27/2012-4/28/2012 (Hospice du Rhone, Paso Robles, California): Opaque purple red violet color; roasted plum, mineral nose; tart black fruit, roasted black fruit, mineral palate; needs 3 years; medium-plus finish 90+ points (4746 views)
Tasted by Miceri on 4/8/2012 & rated 87 points: Very dark purple red, almost to the black side; very dense nose of dark fruit, a bit marmelade; fresh and tannic attack, not jammy at all, a bit flat, various bits haven't quite come together, but also very young, a bit shallow with limited depth (3430 views)
Long, finement réglissé…..danger explosif!!! (3734 views)

U.S. Importer (Addt'l Info)

Started in 1986 by the Delorme brothers, Domaine de la Mordoree (woodcock) has become one of the top estates in the Rhone, with arguably the most consistent quality. Christophe Delorme's objective as a winemaker is to be unintrusive and maintain total respect for his terroir and the fruit it produces, striving to achieve a perfect balance between concentration and terroir. The domaine consists of 55 Hectares, on 38 different parcels, providing a rich, wide range of soils and climates. They practice "culture raisonnée", with minimum intervention in the vineyards, and as close as possible organic viticulture.

The Story:

"The end never justifies the means" is the motto at Christophe Delorme's revered Domaine de la Mordorée. He believes that the means of achieving greatness is as important as the result itself. For Christophe, the "means" consists of total respect for Mother Nature, a philosophy that has guided him for the last 15 years. In 1986, Christophe Delorme decided to dedicate himself to his passion for wine. He started his estate with the objective to produce the best wines in each appellation while maintaining preservation of the environment. The majority of Christophe's vineyard sites are organic and biodynamic and they have established their own ecosystems within each site.

The improvements at the domaine have been incredible: new pneumatic presses, new stainless steel vats, new destemmers, new vinification techniques and ageing in the best quality oak barrels for their top wines. Only natural products are used to fertilize the soil in order to propigate biological activity with weeds grown between rows of vines to inhibit soil erosion and harmful insects. The yield is reduced in the vineyard by ébourgeonnage (de budding in spring) and "vendanges vertes" in summer (green harvesting). Machine Harvesting is forbidden and against the domaine's natural focus. The complex integrated pest control system which utilizes natural ecosystems is used instead of manmade intervention. No expense is spared at the Estate of this dynamic and advanced Rhône Producer.

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.
