Tasted by jfslikeswine on 4/10/2024 & rated 94 points: What a beautiful wine! Took this to dinner with some co-workers and it did not disappoint! This is a big and bold wine that has aged gracefully. It could have stayed in the bottle a year or two longer. It opened up after about 30 minutes. (392 views)
Tasted by Andreessen on 3/21/2024 & rated 96 points: damn. absolutely stunning. had this wine in a lineup with SQN, Ehrlich, Vinum Dei and this was just showing fabulously well. Ehrlich and Vinum Dei, are new producers in Napa, and Vinum Dei was the wine of the evening but the Pahlmeyer was a close second. beautiful aromatics, rich mouthfeel...jam, spice, black fruits. tightly wound, still a baby. beautiful. (319 views)
Tasted by cubswinws on 2/2/2024 & rated 93 points: Big bold Napa cab with solid fruit core but a bit heavy on the oak for my taste. Still quite young. No rush on this one. (751 views)
Tasted by Markjams on 12/25/2023 & rated 96 points: Outstanding with Christmas steaks! (755 views)
Tasted by suarezd on 12/3/2023 & rated 90 points: Needed 30-60 minutes of air to open up. Complex fruit, medium tannins. Very good, but not outstanding. (1079 views)
Tasted by TwoSmoochies on 9/2/2023 & rated 91 points: Am I losing my loving feeling for Napa? This was a bit to fruity, a bit to sweet. Say it isn't so... (1310 views)
Tasted by wino121 on 7/11/2023 & rated 94 points: Not sure it gets much better, absolutely stunning right now.

Tasted by Hi.its.Don.4.Wine on 10/25/2022 & rated 96 points: Greatness Continues (DDF)

In my review of the first Napa Cab enjoyed by myself, my daughter, and her fiancé, the 2012 Stewart Cellars Nomad, I mentioned the impact of that great vintage along with the winemaking abilities of Paul Hobbs. Today’s wine transitions from that beautifully balanced and slightly more demure vintage to 2013, where fruit took center stage and wines became even bigger and richer in style, if that’s even possible.

What better choice for 2013 than the likewise Bordeaux-esque wine:

Pahlmeyer Proprietary Red 2013

All mountain fruit, mostly from their estate vineyard with additional fruit coming from Rancho Chimiles and Stagecoach vineyards, is composed of 81% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, 6% Malbec, and 3% Petit Verdot, we were once again regaled by this Bordeaux-styled wine, that for lack of a better descriptor was a “showstopper!”

While still in its youth, the wine was bright and full of wonderful acidity, firm tannins, and the all-to-present 2013 extracted fruit of cassis and dark blackberry and blueberry were offset by what some might call crushed stone, I use the term earthiness or rustic. On top of all that, the wine lingers on your palate for what seems like ages.

As is my custom, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention that Pahlmeyer had been acquired in 2019 by E. & J. Gallo and have yet to try the wine since that acquisition and the winemaker has changed a couple of times since 2013. Although from the reviews, it seems as though it continues to shine.

Tasted by rbrater on 10/3/2022 flawed bottle: On the nose, the bottle is very slightly corked. On the palate, still enjoyable but might be missing a bit due to it being slightly flawed. (2255 views)
Tasted by capacious on 5/27/2022 & rated 93 points: Pahlmeyer is reliable year after year, always a crowd pleaser. Not for those who only love old world, this is full of sweet fruit, mouth filling luscious. Wouldn’t hold long, for me it’s where it should be. This isn’t built for secondaries. (2809 views)
Tasted by tdurst on 5/21/2022 & rated 94 points: Did not disappoint; very nice, smooth, and big, without being overpowering; would have been even better with more breathing time (2434 views)
Tasted by PhilOSU on 2/2/2022: Fulmer stole it lol (483 views)
Tasted by capacious on 1/21/2022 & rated 93 points: One of our favorite Calif cabs, this has been reliable for decades. Young at this point, it is still eminently drinkable now with an afternoon decant. Mouthfulling, classic California, beginning to edge to the expensive side but I’ll continue to buy my annual case, and I do less and less of that at this age (74). Proprietary red is always a crowd pleaser, and so everything older is already consumed. (2995 views)
Tasted by Agunner23 on 12/5/2021 & rated 93 points: I think the wine is at its sweet spot, very juicy, and the tannins are well rounded with a 15 to 20-second finish with minimal acidity, enjoyable wine to drink by itself. I don't know if I would pay $180 for it because I got it for $120 a bottle, and I think it performs great at the $120 price point. I will be picking another bottle or two up and seeing if a couple of years will do anything, which I don't suspect it will need since it is already eight years old. (2607 views)
Tasted by Agunner23 on 12/5/2021 flawed bottle: Corked, wine saturated 90% of the cork. Sad. I will get an exchange. (2385 views)
Tasted by Markie_Sharkie on 10/19/2021 & rated 94 points: Dark violet color. Nose of blackberry, cedar, hint of licorice. On palate similar blackberry, slight licorice. Medium finish. Better after 4 hours open (no decant) and still solid on second night. Lots of time left. (2211 views)
Tasted by 1964vintage on 4/16/2021 & rated 96 points: In a beautiful place right now. Outstanding. (3063 views)
Tasted by Ricky99 on 12/7/2020 & rated 94 points: huge firm tannins gripping here... fruit working its way.... should be special (3412 views)
Tasted by DrBad on 11/21/2020 & rated 93 points: Drank over several nights. Coming together better than the bottle from several years ago which was overly tannic and burly. In line with most notes of dark berry, licorice, cedar. At this point not enough here to justify the high price for me but this seems like it will go for a long time so I'm going to put my other bottle in deep storage and forget about it for a decade or more. (3315 views)
Tasted by jcampano on 10/2/2020 & rated 93 points: Floral aromatics with black fruit and pencil lead. Black cherry and licorice with cedar and light oak. Edgy tannins, this wine needs at least 3 hours in a decanter. Drink over the next 5 - 10 years. (3271 views)
Tasted by vpoms on 3/20/2020 & rated 94 points: Opened this bottle by mistake as I had 2007 and 2013 on the same shelf. Nevertheless, I very powerful and enjoyable wine. I think it need a few more years in the bottle before it reached its full potential. (4021 views)
Tasted by Kenny_Powers on 12/31/2019 & rated 93 points: One of my favorites. Tastes like great wine. Too drunk to come up with anything clever...at least that's what my wife is telling me. (3766 views)
Tasted by KTelaak_Buffalo on 11/8/2019 & rated 95 points: I think it's spectacularly big and bold. Fruit forward and a pleasure to offset some oak on the mid-palate and the finish. If you like deep, dark and bold, this is your wine. No noticable tannins. Drinking great now. (3686 views)

Tasted by jgreco on 12/27/2018 & rated 92 points: Wow, this is a big wine with deep concentrated black fruit! Nutmeg and Licorice round out the flavors. The finish is elegant and sweet, with the merlot in the blend taking center stage. Like almost all of its contemporaries in the 2013 vintage, this has the legs to develop for another decade or more. (5263 views)
Tasted by mactheknife on 11/4/2018 & rated 95 points: Decanted for four hours then put back in a bottle and took to dinner. Very balanced and a beautiful wine all around, with dark fruit and graphite notes. Plenty of life in this one (4616 views)
Tasted by SLMTcellar on 7/8/2018 & rated 94 points: Ama Ama at Aulani for $275 (4847 views)
Tasted by gteran76 on 7/7/2018 & rated 90 points: We were in a rush so we only had 30-40 min to decant it and I think this may need 2+ hours. So it was close and didn’t reflected all its potential... (4397 views)
Tasted by Castle Peak on 5/30/2018 & rated 94 points: Strong and powerful. Really good. Will benefit from for time in the bottle and/or a healthy decant. (3851 views)
Tasted by Otaku Oenophile on 5/23/2018 & rated 94 points: Beautiful notes of cassis, flowers and oak leap out of the glass. Blueberries, cassis with a green olive and meaty note at the end. Stony minerality and graphite as well. Over many hours I get flint, iron and a hint of gun powder.

However at this age everything doesn't seem to be integrated properly yet. Probably will get better in 3 years yet intriguing to experience now. (3417 views)
Tasted by DJWoodTX on 3/23/2018: Tremendous amount of sediment. Be sure to give it plenty of time to settle before decanting. All the refinement of Bordeaux with a hedonistic Napa nose. Wound tight for plenty of aging potential. (3497 views)
Tasted by buckeye76 on 12/26/2017 & rated 95 points: Second tasting of this wine within a couple of months. My notes were very similar. While I know this wine will go for a long time and continue to improve, again, I was impressed by how good it is now! A big wine with deep concentrated fruit, it is very well balanced, full bodied, and shows nice complexity. (3307 views)
Tasted by buckeye76 on 11/8/2017 & rated 95 points: Big wine with deep concentrated fruit. Blueberries, black cherries licorice, and a bit of smoke in the nose. Blackberries, black cherries, and currants in the flavor with a touch of spice in the long finish. Well balanced and nice complexity. This wine needs more time but was impressive now. (3979 views)
Tasted by Badmonkey on 11/2/2017 & rated 91 points: Plum Market luxury wine tasting. Dark ruby/purple fruit - blackberry, blueberry, currants, and dark raspberry. Smooth mid-palate with decent depth but I expected a little bigger/fuller fruit in light of the 96 rating from WA. Decent finish but not overly long nor deep. Apparently the bottles were opened a couple hours before the tasting. According to the winery, best after 2020 which I believe makes sense - this vintage needs more time in my opinion for the fruit to open-up and hopefully fill-out some. 81% cab, 7% merlot, 3% cab franc, 6% Malbec, and 3% petit verdot. (5360 views)
Tasted by Ben Christiansen on 9/20/2017: Big raspberry fruit and black fruit on the nose, needs some time, opened today. A decantable wine I am being told and I would definately agree. (4617 views)
Tasted by mikemboutiquewines on 7/29/2017 & rated 95 points: Really opened up beautifully after about an hour. Looking forward to drinking my other bottles over the next bunch of years! (4495 views)
Tasted by andrewdodd86 on 4/27/2017 & rated 90 points: Still somewhat tannic, nice nose, simple red fruit. Raspberry. Disappointing compared to previous tastes, been on the tasting machine too long? Dumb phase? Needs air? Crap vintage specifically for Pahlmeyer? (4446 views)
Tasted by RayT on 4/7/2017 & rated 93 points: Big nose. Soft entry and good mid palate. Finish was a bit soft. While good not sure this is worth the money. (4493 views)
Tasted by floridawinedrkr on 1/29/2017 & rated 90 points: Really rough finish. Huge alcohol at 15.2%. Not bad upfront and mid-palate but the finish is abrasive with some off notes. Very rich and full bodied. Like Caymus SS. Lots of blueberry and vanilla. The finish has some prune, raisins, tea leaves, and mushrooms I didn't care for. I believe this will change with time. Its to early to drink this. (4994 views)
Tasted by rjonwine@gmail.com on 1/19/2017 & rated 94 points: Very dark red violet color; bright, cassis, black raspberry nose; delicious, cadsis, black raspberry palate with good balancing acidity; long finish (81% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Merlot, 6% Malbec, 3% Cabernet Franc, 3% Petit Verdot) (1349 views)
Tasted by Niagara on 12/1/2016 & rated 85 points: Man, they just whiffed on this vintage. Out of balance with too much black fruit and stewed prunes. Just not up to the usual standard. (5246 views)
Tasted by nzinkgraf on 11/18/2016: VERY blackberry aromas. Medium fine-grained tannin. Big acid, super juicy. The genesis of Root Beer to the palate. (4489 views)
Tasted by Ultimatewinekick_Andreas on 11/5/2016 & rated 91 points: Very ripe and heavy fruit on the nose but also some menthol, spices and oak notes. Very jammy and almost thick on the palate with an abundance of blackcurrant fruit and leafs but also green paprika. The finish leaves a rather inky impression. This is extremely heavy and concentrated wine that does get rather overwhelming and I lack something to balance all the fruit. (4238 views)
Tasted by bestdamncab on 10/24/2016 & rated 92 points: MW Institute 2013 American Cabernet Tasting, nose of black cherry, red cherry, blackberry, and a touch of licorice, same on the palate, big body, small amount of soft tannins, fairly fruit forward, lovely, nice and easy to taste, very tasty, but a short finish. At $150, not a buy for me. (4116 views)
Tasted by RajivAyyangar on 10/24/2016: Institute of Masters of Wine - 2013 Cabernet Walk-Around Tasting (Hyatt, San Francisco): Aromatic. Intense black fruit. Ripe on the palate. Not super refined. (no score - quick impressions). (4490 views)

Rich lush powerful nose and palate. Quite primary. Nice but very full bodied. (2949 views)
Tasted by ColluraJ on 9/17/2016 & rated 89 points: Dark purplish color and clear. Powerful aromas of oak, blackberry, leaves and loam. Aged. Bone dry and full-bodied. Crisp acidity with high dry tannins. Fair balance and moderate flavors of red berry, simple syrup and saplings. Long finish. Excellent. (3259 views)
Tasted by Matt Scott on 8/28/2016 & rated 94 points: Decanted for an hour. A noir, almost purple colour. Dark chocolate pudding, black licorice, lilies, vanilla bean and blueberry. Velvety tannins and still distinct layers. A forward, masculine style. Drink 2017 - 2032. (3645 views)
Tasted by wineguy75 on 8/22/2016 & rated 94 points: Big wine, good balance slight coarseness. Drank well despite limited decant time. (3290 views)
Tasted by Niagara on 7/16/2016 & rated 91 points: Somehow I think Pahlmeyer has fallen off a bit the last few vintages ... still a good wine, but doesn't seem to be cruising at the same altitude as previously. (3822 views)
Tasted by rustyRudy on 6/16/2016 & rated 97 points: Wine store large tasting pour. Huge wine, this runs the gamut of red and black fruit, terrific concentration, young but enjoyable, nice expression of oak, crisp cherry tartness , graphite, and a superb finish. I paid $100 for the 2007, so the price has jumped in the last few years, so not a bargain, but it is good juice. (3786 views)
Tasted by Millennial Drinkers on 5/14/2016 & rated 90 points: NFN - Same as the merlot. Ruby red with purple hues. Dark fruits and a slight stinkiness on the nose. Moderate plus tannins (7.5/10). Seems too young. Lots of red cherries and very grippy. 90+ (3314 views)
Tasted by yeti575rider on 5/14/2016 & rated 91 points: 2016 Bassin's California Barrel Tasting (Mandarin Oriental D.C.): I haven't been a huge Pahlmeyer fan for some reason but this is one of the better ones I've had. This is still opening up as the nose is a bit closed but pretty classic blend profile. I still question the QPR a bit as I think it's a bit much. (3884 views)
Tasted by englishman's claret on 5/5/2016 & rated 92 points: The website says that this was inspired by mouton but I don't really find much resemblance. This is big and hot, lots of dark liqueur, vanilla. Sweet fruit on the palate. (3918 views)
Tasted by Ben Christiansen on 5/4/2016: Big and huge in every way. (3274 views)
Tasted by Eric Guido on 4/5/2016 & rated 94 points: What a nose on this dark beauty of a wine. The bouquet was intense and alluring with soaring dark floral tones, leading to crushed ripe cherry, cassis, currant, sweet spice, licorice and minerals. It was focused with silky, dense textures and vibrant acidity giving way to brilliant cherry, blackberry fruit, infused with sweet herbs. This was structured and refined with a long and saturating dark fruit finish. Color me impressed. (3903 views)
Tasted by Millennial Drinkers on 4/18/2015 & rated 95 points: 30th Addy Bassin's California Barrel Tasting (The Mandarin Oriental Hotel): 95+
besides bevans, one of my favorites of the day, lots of cassis but needs to smooth out and open up (7098 views)
Tasted by cab blends on 4/18/2015 & rated 91 points: California Tasting (Barrel Tasting and an slight older): Strong heavy tannins 8.5/10. Hardly any nose - this seems closed and is probably just in a tough patch at the moment. The fruit is closed and it seems to have less depth than normal?? (5014 views)

Pahlmeyer

Producer website

Jayson Pahlmeyer, recently joined by his daughter Cleo Pahlmeyer, have been producing highly sought-after, seductive, hedonistic wines since 1986. Pahlmeyer's flagship wine is the Proprietary Red, a Napa Valley Bordeaux blend. Chardonnay, Merlot and Pinot Noir round out this stunning portfolio. These wines are produced from exceptional mountain vineyards in the Napa Valley and Sonoma Coast, including the Pahlmeyer family’s Waters Ranch (Atlas Peak AVA) and Wayfarer Farm (Fort Ross/Seaview AVA). These vineyards, coupled with winemakers Kale Anderson and Bibiana Gonzalez Rave's passion and talent, turn out wines with power and finesse.

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.
