Tasted by beatles on 6/15/2022 & rated 91 points: Still holding up fine, the vintage speaks. Alcohol showing, whiffs off with air, sound Grenache here, mature, no hard edges. Drinking a point, no need to wait.

My #4, Group's #1 (50 pts). Tasted blind. (1123 views)
Tasted by Château de Farmer on 4/4/2020 & rated 92 points: Lovely bottle. Several years past ideal peak but still within (at very end) top drinking window. Plum, mint, licorice, black pepper, leather, forest floor. Acid fading but still medium. Spiciness upon popping, but that faded fairly quickly along with acid. Round and balanced, maybe even a little too round at this point. (1422 views)
Tasted by GGinSF on 3/18/2020 & rated 92 points: I thought this was at peak in 2014, but it's as good or even better now. Plum fruit and kirsh is still fresh and at the forefront, but perhaps the garrigue notes have faded (going by memory). On the modern side of CdP vs VT, but has enough Old World style to remain true. (1483 views)
Tasted by CHarder on 12/8/2018 & rated 91 points: Gave it 30mins decant. Drinks perfectly now (1615 views)
Tasted by spineguy on 11/12/2018 & rated 93 points: What a treat. Probably at its peak and will remain for 4+ years. Dusty leather with forest (and no Bret) on the nose. Cassis, dark red and dark fruit berries, hint of prune, brambles and anise, all harmoniously playing on the palate. Not a wimpy wine, but seamless. Great with or without food. Glad I waited until now to open. (1498 views)
Tasted by mrecknor on 6/6/2018 & rated 92 points: Our first CDP in a while. What a treat! Gentle tannins, although present. Soft fruit, but still quite available. Beautiful color. Delicious mouthfeel. Aerated from the bottle to a pitcher, let sit for 30 min. then aerated back into the bottle for serving. Vacuum pumped and refrigerated for overnight, then finished the second day at room temp. No discernible deterioration on the 2nd day. (1687 views)
Tasted by beatles on 4/10/2018 & rated 90 points: Time to drink this, I think; the overall impression is brownish, alcohol showing a wee bit. Very nice local feel, certainly a decent effort, very much a châteauneuf-du-pape, lacks maybe only a bit of precision ... (1594 views)
Tasted by yinha on 1/20/2018 & rated 88 points: May have peaked already? (1413 views)
Tasted by henrygjeffreys on 9/16/2017: Deep red colours still lots of colour, pale rim,
Dark spices on the nose, roast meat and gravy _ nearly bisto (one for British readers)
Ripe and full, meaty with chestnut notes, lots of power though tannins now very soft, bramble fruit
Quite noticeable alcohol but I'd just had some Burgundy so the difference as quite noticeable
An enjoyable and no hurry to drink (1650 views)
Tasted by burgund on 4/17/2017 & rated 89 points: Rustic - a bit over the top (1663 views)
Tasted by yinha on 9/24/2016 & rated 91 points: Delightful after a relatively short airing in the glass. Mid weight, drinking well. (1825 views)
Tasted by wineappreciation on 8/17/2016 & rated 90 points: Unripe blackberry, squid ink; lively, rustic, earthy, spicy, with a fairly long finish; somewhat deteriorated (1904 views)
Tasted by Jochems on 4/5/2015 & rated 93 points: This wine is in great shape, maybe not at its peak but very enjoyable. It needed about an hour to open up.

Dark ruby color with some hints of amber at the rim. Enticing aromas of blackcurrant, pepper some tobacco and wt earth evolving with hints of licorice and lavender. Full bodied and smooth with some chewy layered tannins, ripe fruit and fresh acidity. The finish keeps on lingering for very, very long.
There still is quite a bit of structure left to develop further for many years to come but it is in great shape right now. Drink now - 2025 (2944 views)
Tasted by gout on 10/26/2014 & rated 90 points: This second bottle was even more appealing than the first. Good colour, attractive bouquet and oh so silky smooth on the palate with chewy fruit and lovely balance. One of the past CDPs I have drunk in many a year. Drinking well at present. A producer to note. (2691 views)
Tasted by gout on 9/21/2014 & rated 89 points: Mature complex bouquet, good structure and well balanced. Drink now (2487 views)
Tasted by GGinSF on 9/15/2014 & rated 92 points: At peak. Silky and full of fruit. Still youthful, but tannins have softened so the wine is just a perfect CdP experience. Drink now, but should hold for another 4 years if well stored. (2228 views)
Tasted by pigdaddy on 8/4/2013 & rated 91 points: 3rd of 6, decanted 30 minutes. deep red, paling at rim; kirsch, cherries, potpourri on the nose; med + weight; lush cherry liqueur, blackberries, sweetly ripe but oh so balanced, anise, bramble & underbrush behind the pure fruit; just a pleasure at this stage of life (mine and the wine's).

grilled herb-rubbed pork loin chops w/Cherokee Purple tomato marmalade; lady pea hoppin' john w/cucumber relish; grilled romaine, garlic-buttermilk ranch dressing

9/01/14 decanted 30 min. not quite as ebullient & polished as the last bottle a year ago, but still a dependable, representative chateauneuf. still in its best window, although inclined to consider for nearer term consumption. (89)

grilled BF pork chop w/marinated tomatoes, fresh mozz, aged balsamic; tender, slow-braised roma beans w/guanciale & torpedo onions (2949 views)
Tasted by smphelps on 4/29/2013 & rated 92 points: Excellent. Natural CDP, and in a good place now, with a real balanced palate. Blackberry, pepper, and grittiness. The sort of stuff that you come to Chateauneuf for. (2386 views)
Tasted by GGinSF on 5/5/2012 & rated 92 points: Drinking very well now. Bridges the gap between older and more modern CdP's. (2920 views)
Tasted by DanB on 3/17/2012: Very clean wine. Cherry liquor exploded out of the glass. Very polished and great value. A (3172 views)
Tasted by bubbachumps on 3/16/2012 & rated 90 points: Complex nose, of iron, earth and high toned fruits. Nice finish. Very interesting wine. (3101 views)
Tasted by willmark on 2/12/2011 & rated 95 points: 12th Feb 2011: never fails to disappoint. Colour was deep red, nose exciting with positive expectations, drawing you in with delight and the the first mouthful filled with met promise, and the finish, one of full satisfaction, immense flavours bursting in the mouth and yet a balance that is to be savoured....wish i had more of this vintage, alas, am down to my last 4 bottles... (2972 views)
Tasted by jupiter33 on 9/9/2010 & rated 92 points: I thing DUCHAMP below nailed it. This wine went great with a game hen dinner. By late in the evening it became very smooth and silky. (3072 views)
Tasted by 2Travel on 8/7/2010 & rated 91 points: Drank with a dinner of lamb and risotto. Med to full bodied. Went especially well with the mushroom risotto and the rosemary encrusted lamb. (2892 views)
Tasted by firespeed_1 on 7/28/2010 & rated 90 points: Dark garnet coloured. On the nose, figs, red fruits, tobacco, cedar wood and spice. On the palate, it was medium-full bodied, rich, nicely balanced with some acidity and had some firm grainy tannins. The finish was long. Drink now-2020 (3551 views)
Tasted by GGinSF on 5/5/2010 & rated 90 points: A classic & classy CdP. Tannins are still pronounced, but with food the wine starts to show a soft silkiness. Dark plums, garrigue and a hint of anice. Drinking very well now and should do well for at least 5 more years. After that, I'm not sure. At the current (reduced) price of $30 I think this is a great buy. Tasted the 2007 at the winery and preferred the Reserve over their higher-end Prestige. (3139 views)
Tasted by duchamp on 5/2/2010 & rated 93 points: Dark ruby, big nose of dried figs, cassis, iodine, spicy oak, brown sugar and floral notes, palate is sweet and complex with crushed dark berries, kirsch, star anise and cherry liqueur, finish lingers with red and black fruits, garrigue and exotic spices (3057 views)
Tasted by pmilne on 11/27/2009 & rated 88 points: A rather bland CdP. Nose held some of the expected CdP flavors, but the taste did not deliver. It had a long 1+ hr decant and still didn't deliver on taste. Even the second day the taste was rather muted. (3356 views)
Tasted by willmark on 10/2/2009 & rated 90 points: 2 Oct 2009: the nose was inviting, setting expectations of something good to follow. the taste did not disappoint, some cherries came through, wine was balanced and easy to drink...wine was enjoyed by all at the table...a good CDP wine.. (3391 views)
Tasted by Hazeo on 2/16/2009 & rated 90 points: Dark cherry. On the verge of being over-ripe for my tastes, but the brooding meaty licorice came by and pushed the fruit side ... in a polished gentlemanly fashion, of course. Nice rounded tannins and was drinking well especially after 30 minutes. Good long finish. (3593 views)
Tasted by Badfish on 2/7/2009 & rated 91 points: Garnet purple throughout with medium legs. Rich and meaty right off the bat with aromas of kirsch, beef blood, blackberry liqueur, crushed stones, and herbs. Concentrated licorice fruit on the palate with ripe firm tannins and herbal tinge to the finish. Good but not noticeably better than most of the 07 Côtes du Rhônes I have been drinking. Could probably use a few years for the tannins to settle down. (3595 views)
Tasted by Paul S on 12/27/2008 & rated 92 points: 2005 CdP and others (Alex's place): This was more like it after two rather mediocre 2005 CdPs. Grenache and Syrah seemed to peek out more here, with leather and meat coming to the fore on the nose, all rather savoury. Rather tight otherwise, with pepper and damp, woody scents only giving way to some plums and fresh prunes later on. The palate was every bit as savoury, very muscular and meaty, with roast lamb and lean, lithe dark cherry flavours lifted by clean acidity. Lovely balance to this wine. Finish seemed shortish at first, with the typical 2005 drying tannins, but grew longer with time, ending in a dash of wood spice. This was a classy wine, with lots of body paired with stately elegance and a finer structure than the first two CdPs we had. (4168 views)
Tasted by Alex H on 12/27/2008 & rated 84 points: Horizontal of 05 CdPs and more (My House): At first, this was pretty closed up with just a deep dark infusion of sweet ripe dark fruits. However, upon the second round of tasting after allowing the wine to sit in the glass for a bit, the true characteristics of the wine shows with nice floral and licorice kirsch spice notes more distinguishable from the main concentrated core of raspberry fruit. What is more enjoyable is the very garrique meaty horse-y nuances that distinguishes it from the rest of the CdPs of the night. A hard toss up between this and the Clos du Caillout as WOTN.  Tasted by willmark on 12/25/2008 & rated 90 points: 25th Dec 2008: this was the second of this wine we consumed; does not disappoint :) (3622 views)
Tasted by willmark on 12/25/2008 & rated 90 points: 25th Dec 2008: served a little chilled but very balanced and drinkable...lovely deep red colour, very easy on the palette... (3602 views)
Tasted by willmark on 11/22/2008 & rated 92 points: 22nd November 2008: the first bottle we drank on the day, the wine was enjoyable and full.... (3641 views)
Tasted by BarneyBuzz on 5/23/2008 & rated 90 points: This was my 2nd blind tasting of the night! It had a stinky/herbal nose of cherries that had me guessing New Zealand pinot noir, but on the palate, it tasted like a familiar earthy matured Faugeres from the regional French Coteaux du Languedoc village. There were notes of black cherries. Its smooth tannins were somewhat mellow that I would never have guessed it was a CDP. An enjoyable CDP for drinking even now. Surprising. No Decanting, straight from bottle. (4021 views)
Tasted by willmark on 5/15/2008 & rated 90 points: date of consumption: 17th April 2008. the nose was very refreshing and young....the taste was fruity and balanced though i believe it will develop more body in the next few years... (3915 views)
Tasted by bajayngo on 5/7/2008 & rated 91 points: took a lil sniff and sip before decanting. the nose was tight but on the palate it exploded with berries. Decant for bout 1.5hrs. Nice nose of pencil shavings, ink, loamy, some baked raspberries. On the palate it was pretty intrusive cough medicine or black licorice cough drops and a huge ink finish! But after about 30mins in the glass it really rounded out the flavors. Really big nose of kookaburra red licorice bits. (if you've had them you'll know exactly what i mean! YUM) Some pepper in the background, really nice balance with that great acidity. I keep getting an herb note that I can't place. I don't know what garrigue smells or tastes like but read it in a lot of tasting notes of southern rhone wines. So maybe that's it. Very nice wine, probably would have been better with some age on it but it was a special bottle for a cool person that I wanted to open early with!

Had this against a Zin from Walla Walla that was so influenced by oak we just couldn't drink it. Opened a btl of turley to tasted against the w2 zin and it blew it out of the water! It was cool to go back and forth between the new world zin and the old world cdp! We loved them both but they were worlds apart. Except for the balance....the balance of both killed it! (3921 views)
Tasted by pizzler on 5/4/2008 & rated 92 points: This was my first taste of the 2005 CDP's and while it is still young and has plenty of development ahead of it, you could see its potential in the nose alone. Subtle, feminine, and smooth taste that could evolve in a thousand directions. This will be a fun one to watch evolve, but it will be a year before I pop another one. (3929 views)
Tasted by Cahill on 3/17/2008 & rated 91 points: Interesting experience. Upon opening, there was a strong herbal/tapenade note with black fruit and a big, big everything. Over time, the tannins came to the fore and brought with it a raspberry granache. Interesting now, will probably be terrific a long time from now. (3977 views)
Tasted by pgm on 2/5/2008 & rated 91 points: It shows more oak than typical for CdP, but that's not to say it's a lot, just that there's perceptible vanilla spice that's quite enjoyable. Otherwise, dense black cherry on the nose, a little garrigue, but not much; a clean mouthful of black fruit, and an elegant finish.
Definitely outstanding, but not the most exciting representation of an exciting vintage. Not overpriced, but there's some phenomenal wines to be had for not too much more money. (4090 views)
Tasted by ERoss on 1/20/2008 & rated 92 points: Dark ruby red. Initially aromas include beef blood, roasted sweet tomato/olive, ripe black raspberry, smoke, anise, and lavender; closed down after an hour or so in the glass to a core of black fruits, licorice, and spice. Flavor profile was rich with crème de cassis, black cherry, and soy sauce. Medium/heavy in texture with a richness nicely set off by acidity; finish loaded with tannins and lasted more than 30 sec. While surprisingly approachable now (may shut down at some point?), this seems set up for a decade or more of aging. The perfect accompaniment to Herbs de Provence crusted lamb loin chops.  Tasted by violahenny on 11/20/2007 & rated 90 points: 30 min to open up. Very nice. (4010 views)

Roger Sabon

The Sabon family has a long history in Chateauneuf du Pape. Quote from the homepage of the domain: "One of the oldest documented landholders in Chateauneuf du Pape, the Sabon family has controlled vineyards in the zone since 1540".
Roger Sabon is the father of the three brothers who run the domain today Jean-Jacques, Denis and Gilbert Sabon.
The vinification is since 2001 in the care of Didier Négron, son-in-law of Jean- Jacques Sabon.
Denis and his son Julien take care of the fields. Delphine, daughter of Denis is often in the reception.

Today the property has 15 ha. in AOC Chateauneuf du Pape and owns 17 ha. of vineyards in Roquemaure from where Lirac and Cotes du Rhone are made.

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.

"As I have written many times in the past, the sweet spot for drinking Châteauneuf du Papes is usually the first 5-6 years after the vintage. Then they seem to go through an adolescent, awkward, and sometimes dormant stage, only to re-emerge around year 10-12, where the majority of wines are often fully mature. The best of them will continue to hold on to life (but rarely improving) beyond 15-20 years. It is only the exceptional Châteauneuf du Papes that will evolve for 20-25+ years, and those are indeed a rarity. However, things may be improving dramatically in terms of the longevity of Châteauneuf du Pape, although Grenache-dominated wines, the vast majority of wines produced in the appellation, are wines that do not have the polyphenol (extract and tannin) content of top Cabernet Sauvignons, Merlots, or Syrah-based wines. Nevertheless, the younger generation in Châteauneuf du Pape has taken seriously the farming in the vineyards. There are more organic and biodynamically run vineyards here than in any other appellation of France. The yields, which were already low, are even lower today (20-35 hectoliters per hectare), and of course, the proliferation of top luxury and/or old-vine cuvées gives a significant boost to the number of wines that will evolve past 25 or 30 years. The advantage of these wines is their broad window of drinkability." - Robert Parker
