Tasted by Dale M on 5/1/2024 & rated 92 points: This has filled in nicely since 2020 - all the more so from a P&P. Both rich and fruit and structure, drink or hold, its your call. (553 views)
Tasted by Zinlady on 2/25/2024 & rated 90 points: Lighter im body and color went well with cheese (1219 views)
Tasted by thelostverse on 2/24/2024 & rated 91 points: Expressive nose of red fruits and kirsch. Palate follows. Excellent acidity and balance. (1071 views)
Tasted by ChateauShiny on 12/16/2023 & rated 92 points: Purchased a 6-pack of this via WineBid. Decanted about 2ish hours and it is interesting to revisit.

Nose of black pepper, savory herbs, blackberry, blueberry, violets, and a bit of lavender. Dense, still very fresh, high acidity, lots of structure, and chewy. Palate of blackberries/blueberries, with a lighter bramble/strawberry supporting the dark fruits, herbs de provance, iron, and dark minerals. Tannins attack sharply and then become chewy. Bringing in a bit of a wood dust along with black tea. Long tannic finish with wood, herbs, graphite, saline, and a bit of citrus peel. Decent amount of alcohol warmth remains after the finish fades.

Totally different wine than the bottle I had 2 years ago. It's almost too dense for me. We are going to revisit tomorrow and see if it lets up any.

Day 2 was very different and forgot to take notes: Veered more red, fresh, but lost a lot of density. Was not as interesting. (1706 views)
Tasted by michigan dogs on 12/12/2023 & rated 92 points: I was surprised that I still had this bottle
in my cellar. It was great, not complex but good acidity and fruit. Dennis and I both enjoyed the bottle and his wife called wanting to buy him a bottle for Christmas since he enjoyed it so much, just a great value. Clearly,no more in my cellar! (1808 views)
Tasted by tomlee on 12/8/2023 & rated 90 points: Crimson in color. 14.4% ABV. Intriguing nose of red and black fruits, leather and white pepper. Medium body with ample acidity. Packed with rustic, earthy fruits. Blackberry, cranberry, blood orange and pepper on the palate. Nice length on the finish. Well made Claret style Zinfandel. As always the value here is unparalleled. Best over the next several years. (1785 views)
Tasted by MunkiMunks on 12/4/2023: This was fantastic. Great QPR - has a nice finesse and not a fruit bomb. (1800 views)

Tasted by Max S. on 8/20/2023 & rated 91 points: Drinking well now. More peppery than last time, the fruit is in balance with the more savory aspects and it's mellowed out a bit. I don't see a reason to keep it longer, but it will definitely live for a few years at least. (2024 views)
Tasted by Z1nnfull on 7/7/2023 & rated 91 points: Just entering drinking window now. While not as robust as some fruit and/or alcohol bomb Zins, this is a varietally perfect expression of the fruit, although hardly timid, it’s complexity and finish really makes this an exceptional offering. Enough acidity to make this quite food-friendly (2127 views)
Tasted by sdahar on 6/18/2023 & rated 91 points: This bottle was totally different from previous bottles. Well rounded with no unpleasant acidity per previous reports. (2067 views)
Tasted by rieslinghoarder on 5/19/2023 & rated 93 points: Glassware: Zalto Universal
Prep: Pop n’ pour

I love checking in on the OVZs about 5 years out from harvest, but was a little hesitant to open this given the structure of the vintage. Did not disappoint at all and didn’t need a decant. Wonderful aromas and flavors of ripe black currant, blackberry, dried blueberry, and raspberry layered on a core of iron and graphite minerality. Lush on the palate, but not in an overly ripe/juicy manner, bolstered by fresh acidity and fine-grained tannins.

As much as I love the SVDs, the OVZ remains a stupid good value and develops so well in the cellar. Wish I bought cases of this. (2560 views)
Tasted by rama on 2/25/2023: Nothing like the bottle I had a few months ago. This one was fine as a pop and pour. I would chalk it up to the closure, but its a DIAM10. No idea why there would be such extreme bottle variation under such a closure. (2740 views)
Tasted by carlsport on 1/15/2023 & rated 92 points: Drinking really well right now with a 20 minute in-glass decant. Fantastic QPR! (2877 views)
Tasted by rama on 12/23/2022: Fecal nose as a PnP. I suspect it will blow off, but was expecting a 4 year old zin to be accessible without heavy aeration or waiting. Quite sweet, good brightness, ferrous. If tasted double blind I would call this a funky syrah or a bojo. Will update if it changes with air.

Update: 1 hour in the funk has dissipated, though its still lacking zinfandel typicity. Meh. (2592 views)
Tasted by azwino on 10/25/2022: PnP and drank over two nights. No formal notes, but needed some time and air in my glass before it got enjoyable. Second day was great from the pour. Classic zin profile, with a fair amount of acidity and mellows out over time. (3112 views)
Tasted by ohne_musik on 10/25/2022 & rated 91 points: Almost 2 years since my last note, and this is still a beast of a wine. Dialed up to 11 in terms of fruit, acidity, and structure. Disjointed at first, and still a bit painful to drink, although it starts to settle after 3 hours in glass. Certainly complex and a bounty of flowers, plums, bramble, and a fair amount of dusty road. Lacks a bit of amplitude in the mid-palate, but the inner mouth aromatics are off the charts and there’s a sense that this will flesh out once the structure starts to soften. A whisper of sweet oak at the end. Probably better in 5 years, and maybe a magnificent wine in 20. (3147 views)
Tasted by DB Lawton on 10/9/2022 & rated 90 points: Drank at Haycraft wedding. Great color, body, and finish. (2780 views)

Tasted by VinCA on 8/26/2022: Rich, deep color, black and blue fruits, medium tannins, med-long finish. Well balanced, well made from good fruit. (2876 views)
Tasted by sdahar on 8/1/2022 & rated 88 points: a little hot with limited fruit. Probably sat on this a little to long. (3121 views)
Tasted by rhyman on 7/30/2022 & rated 88 points: I know, I am lower score than most of you guys. This is one of my favorite wineries and they always produce zins that we love. This zin seems to lack the punch we like in the wine. It is an earthy, black fruit, medium weight zin. Nothing wrong with this, it just seems so different from many of their other vintages. So I have several left and will try again in a year or so. (3020 views)
Tasted by Everything Ahead on 7/30/2022 & rated 90 points: Very nice CA Zin, with balanced oak, spice, blackberries, alcohol and acid in good balance. It is refreshing to have such a drinkable Zin that is not overly oaked. I prefer this producer over Ridge these days due to the latter's excessive use of new American oak. (3000 views)
Tasted by PSUSteve on 7/23/2022 & rated 92 points: Bright lively fruit with very nice finish on PnP (3026 views)
Tasted by t_moderne on 7/2/2022 & rated 90 points: Pop and pour. Tasted on a sail boat and then again at home.
Saved half in a 375ml bottle, refrigerated and under vacuvin.
Dark purple color.
Grape and dark berries on the nose.
Good fruit wine with lots of appeal. Sufficient acidity and character to counter the fresh and sweet berry fruit.
Retained that fresh dark berry fruit in the saved half bottle. (2967 views)
Tasted by comlaw on 6/24/2022 & rated 91 points: Decanted 30 minutes. Nice mix of dark and red fruit with white pepper. Medium body with moderate tannin and acidity. Paired well w/tuna au poivre. Excellent QPR. (2899 views)

Tasted by Stephen Rash on 12/21/2021 & rated 90 points: Dark garnet in color and clear in the glass. Aromas of raspberry, black cherry, black licorice, sweet spice, and damp earth on the nose; tastes of black cherry and pepper on the palate. Great acidity which lasted on the tongue through the long finish. Tannins were still young and drying but what a great QPR!! (3500 views)
Tasted by ElJefeTX on 12/20/2021 & rated 89 points: Ample strawberry and raspberry liqueur on the nose interwoven with new leather and licorice. While there’s a little heat present on the nose and palate, this 2018 shows a refined, “anti-jammy” fruit profile with juicy notes of boysenberry and red cherry with a nice backbone of white pepper and vanilla spice. Acidity is firmly present but doesn’t overpower while the mildly drying tannins fade on the finish. Improves with an hour+ decant. (3493 views)
Tasted by pakabear on 12/16/2021 & rated 91 points: Classic new world Zin, ripe cherry, raspberry, cherry cough medicine, leather, dried roses, white pepper, good structure and balance. As usual, a great QPR. (3605 views)
Tasted by corkscrews on 12/11/2021 & rated 91 points: A nose of black cherry and spices, dark garnet in color. A medium to full bodied Zin, with black cherry, black raspberry, licorice and spices on finish, easy drinking, a very good QPR. www.winelx.com (3169 views)
Tasted by jstrovel@gmail.com on 11/25/2021 & rated 91 points: It has gotten to a good place now. A burst of red fruit. I taste cherry and/or raspberry. A good every day drinker. (3303 views)
Tasted by td1836 on 10/29/2021 & rated 91 points: Really good in this vintage. Raspberry, blackberry, well balanced. It tastes young and will develop i’m sure. (3858 views)
Tasted by Neecies on 9/27/2021: Beautifully perfumed nose with bright boysenberry fruit and spice. Uncommonly balanced and graceful--really, everything I want and hope for from this grape. Also in my top three. (4632 views)
Tasted by Janstan on 9/6/2021 & rated 88 points: Not as robust as I expected, perhaps it was the heft of the competition that night (4235 views)
Tasted by JohnMcIlwain on 8/30/2021: I’ll confess to not remembering the last time I drank a young Zinfandel (maybe Sky Zinfandel a few years ago?), but it’s been a minute. And despite having a few bottles of Bedrock Evangelho, I’ve been remiss in checking in on the Old Wine Zinfandel. But a wonderful bottle of 1987 Ravenswood enjoyed with a colleague and a chance sighting of the 2018 reminded me that I probably could use more dry-farmed California heritage wines at the table. Served at cellar temperature. The robe is a dark ruby, rather than inky purple and translucent to the meniscus. The nose is brambly and red-fruited, with notes of game, spice, and black raspberry seed. The palate is concentrated—but by no means over-extracted or roasted—with a fine thrust of plummy red fruit, wild hedge fruit, and despite it being “entry level,” there’s plenty of deep earth and soil tone to maintain interest. There’s fine acidity and certainly some tannins, which keep things ‘upright.’ And while there’s a bit of discernible wood here (nothing overt, dear reader), this carries itself with aplomb despite the ripeness of the vintage. Terrific with binchotan-grilled lamb loin chops from Dickson's and a sautée of corn and chanterelles; it certainly stood up to the grass-fed lamb, while not overwhelming the corn and wild mushroom. This is a lovely bottle and worth the tariff. And structurally, I can see this gaining complexity and interest with 7-12 years in the cellar. Re-buy? Sure, there’s a plenty of interest here, but I’d certainly advocate for serving at cellar temp and allowing the wine to open up. Also, it bears mentioning, this is a real bargain. Not “cheap,” but an excellent value. Well worth seeking out. (4540 views)
Tasted by boozebythecreek on 8/6/2021: Still one of the best bangs for the buck out there. (4826 views)
Tasted by Bozekt on 7/31/2021 & rated 90 points: Deep ruby to purple, moderate plus staining. Nose of ripe blackberries, boysenberry, violets, and peach. Silky palate confirms nose with subtle oatmeal cookie notes. Dry, moderate tannin, acidity is med plus, ABV med plus, med plus body. A very elegant yet textbook California zin. I always have a bottle of this on hand! (4224 views)
Tasted by Laz4wine on 7/31/2021 & rated 91 points: No formal note but similar impressions to recent favorable reviews and professionals. (4176 views)
Tasted by Old Joe on 7/6/2021 & rated 90 points: A rather smooth Zin with a notable finish (4055 views)
Tasted by ocassiuso on 6/30/2021: Medium ruby, not perfectly transparent. Elevated aromatic intensity, including some volatility. A piney aroma, smoke, earth, dark fruit. Dry, elevated acidity, moderate drying tannins, medium bodied, 14.4°. Moderated concentration of fruit and spice — not an in-your-face zin — Might benefit from a little time in the cellar. Homespun but not simple? (4141 views)
Tasted by bwillia on 6/26/2021 & rated 91 points: An elegant style of Zinfandel. Semi transparent in color. A subdued nose but plenty of character on the palate with a peppery finish. I’m a fan of this new, less jammy style of Zin. (3757 views)
Tasted by gmbdds on 6/5/2021 & rated 90 points: A punch of blackberry and zesty berry. High toned acidity to compliment the bold fruit flavors. Quality fruit wins out over secondary notes, though there is a touch of Syrah tarriness. (4241 views)
Tasted by jstrovel@gmail.com on 5/16/2021: A bit more cellaring for this one. (4571 views)
Tasted by Bob in NC on 5/14/2021 & rated 91 points: A beautiful, drinkable and youthful juicy Zin from 80 year old vines. This wine has a certain elegance to it with a softness in the palate, and great fruit and spice balance. The finish is superbly smooth, long and lush. Went perfectly with our bison burgers. We can see this drinking well over the next 5+ years. (4028 views)

Tasted by VoVo on 4/6/2021 & rated 92 points: An absolutely delicious pizza wine that needs more time to age and come into its own. Decant, decant, decant to enjoy now or in next couple of years. We remembered to bring it to temp and decant, and it was lovely. (4971 views)

Tasted by lvjohn on 3/22/2021 & rated 93 points: No notes (4762 views)
Tasted by Tenpasttwo on 2/26/2021: Bit surprised at the high acidity which remained after a 1hr decant. Seemed to have trouble balancing. On the nose red fruit and dark plum with a hint of spice. Dense berries, smokiness and a very noticeable amount of black pepper in the mid palate. Tannins and acidity are bold and linger on a long medium dry finish. I was put off on the finish and it did not smooth out on 1st night after a few hours. A bit too young for me to appreciate now. Holding my other bottles. Seems like it’ll develop into a very nice mid complexity wine in a couple of years.
2nd night - 24 hrs after decant, kept at room temp. Significantly improved, lost virtually all of the sharp bite on finish but also lost some bouquet and fruit. Much more balanced. The peppery finish was very good, long, lingering and fairly smooth where I could not enjoy it on the 1st night. Went very well with homemade eggplant parmigiana. This should be worth the wait to hold a few more years. (5032 views)
Tasted by Grand12 on 2/21/2021 & rated 86 points: Little too spicy for me. Fruit is medium, rather sharp. (4897 views)
Tasted by C.W.Birdies on 2/19/2021: Great nose of bramble, dark fruits and some spice. Fruit flavor was muted on night 1 but much more juicy and balanced on night 2. Great bargain but will let other bottles sleep for awhile

4.0 (4491 views)
Tasted by sid_loves_wine on 2/13/2021 & rated 92 points: Very nice stuff. Was interesting to compare to the 2018 Ridge 'Three Valleys' Zin (although that's a blend, with the majority zin- not sure about this one.) The Ridge won out slightly, but this was still solid- although I should say this felt like a lot more of a "typical" zinfandel, which isn't usually my jam (JAMMY!! GET IT??) The Ridge was cooler, more blue fruit, vanilla, florals, very "pure"- this had sunny red fruits and a slightly more rustic feel to it. The oak components were different, but about the same quality.

Sweet, pretty and bouncy nose of strawberry or raspberry jam, interesting in that it smells "fresh" but still very much like preserves- the fruit itself isn't baked or hot, it's just showing more like a marmalade than anything else. Eventually almost showed enough depth to evoke a fruit liqueur such as Chambord. If you like the cute jammy thing, this does it very well- reminded me of a Turley Dusi vineyard zin that cost nearly 3x as much. The Turley was much more intense of course, but this showed a very similar profile, right down to the dark red fruit preserves and interesting oak nuances of cinnamon and caramel corn.

Palate is about the same as the nose, pretty homemade jam but with a bright energy that makes it feel pretty rather than cloying. Solid medium acidity, and surprisingly chalky tannins.

Brighter and more red-fruited than the Bedrock 2017, which was a darker and earthier wine, maybe more complex, but also less expressive.

Good QPR in the low $20 range, maybe not the best in the $30 range, unless you're into Zin a little more than I am. (4806 views)
Tasted by ChateauShiny on 2/12/2021 & rated 88 points: Decanted 60 minutes. Medium dark clear ruby. Mild nose of blackberries, cherries, and umami – was expecting more of a nose than this. Medium bodied, medium-high acidity, and dry. Palate swings to the red fruit side of things with raspberries, red cherries and vanilla with the blackberries in the background. Mid palate is spicy and warm. Tannins attack the mouth sharply, quickly smooth out, and then fade with the finish. Medium-short crisp finish of vanilla, eucalyptus, and black pepper.

Over the evening the wine became more composed but it did not gain any additional complexity.

This is a nice wine and is a crowd pleaser, but it really needs something extra to push it over into greatness. Personally I would rather pay a bit more and get one of Bedrock’s single vineyard or heritage wines instead. (4135 views)
Tasted by HFLED on 2/5/2021 & rated 91 points: These are drinking very nicely now, well integrated, good fruit flavor with a touch of eucalyptus, and nicely balanced acidity. Great QPR. (4574 views)
Tasted by jmull on 1/30/2021 & rated 91 points: These continue to impress, having smoothed out nicely over the last 18 months or so and settled into a lovely balance. No rush to drink these but I’d hate to lose the fruit so would probably drink remaining bottles in next 2-3 years. (4270 views)
Tasted by dchapman100@gmail.com on 1/29/2021: Rich notes of cooked cherry, blueberry, and white tea. Mild tannin on the finish. Very good and drinking well. (4169 views)
Tasted by MdeCarabas on 1/22/2021 & rated 88 points: Plush caramel blackberry nose
Smooth and “rested” texture
Darker end of berries - blackberry, huckleberry, some feel of over-ripeness, unilateral flavors, no development, but does have Zin character
Tannins are puckery like unripe persimmon but not that pronounced
Somewhat abbreviated finish
Not a favorite

Tasted by pdr_urrutia on 1/16/2021 & rated 92 points: Great value. Vibrant spice with juicy black cherry and raspberry with earthy pepper and light spice, adding depth to a wine that already punches above its weight. (4111 views)
Tasted by ohne_musik on 1/4/2021 & rated 91 points: Coming along nicely, but I think it still needs 3-4 years to really hit its stride. Dense layers of berry fruit, licorice, salted plum, violets and oyster shell. Fairly burly tannins for OVZ - seems more like Mountain Zin. Has tension and acid to keep the abundant flavors in check but seems a little top-heavy at the moment... but huge upside with patience I think. (5147 views)
Tasted by tomlee on 12/28/2020 & rated 92 points: Purple in color. 14.4% ABV. Delightful nose of red and black fruits, plums, earth and pepper. Full bodied with mouth watering acidity. Packed with lush, bright fruits. Strawberry, raspberry liqueur, baking spices and pepper on the palate. Tremendous length on the finish. Fantastic Zinfandel from a super vintage. Best over the next few years while you allow the single vineyard wines to sit in the cellar. (4778 views)
Tasted by Rbhan12 on 12/27/2020 & rated 91 points: Pretty good. Slow ox in bottle for a few hours.

Nose of blackberries, maybe some gaminess, black pepper and other spices. Palate has medium full body, good acidity, red fruits and drying tannins. Finish is smooth with some red fruit and smokiness that comes through. I would not describe this is jammy, and in terms of Zin, I think this is rather restrained.

If you served this to me blind, I wouldn’t have pinned this as a Zinfandel. The other Zins I’ve had were much more jammy with layers and depth of dark fruits and spice. I would’ve said this could be a *bold* Cabernet or maybe even a Syrah.

Nonetheless a good wine that I would feel confident opening for others. Might need to pick up some more. (4566 views)

Tasted by jcassi01 on 10/4/2020 & rated 90 points: First bottle was a pop and pour, and that was a huge mistake. The nose was overwhelmingly stemmy, I couldn’t enjoy the wine

Next bottle I decanted about 30 hours and it was a different wine. The stemminess had blown off and the wine was very enjoyable. Bright red fruit with high acid. Midpalate is a little thin.

Bedrock wines can be enjoyable, but they require an overnight decant or a lot of bottle age. I don’t have to plan ahead with Ridge and Carlisle. (4946 views)
Tasted by Cyclingtrivialities on 10/3/2020 & rated 91 points: This is excellent and only getting better, enjoyed it more than in the spring when it presented a little tight. This was a crowd pleaser by the grill, elegantly red+blue fruit without being too ripe/jammy. Not a ridiculous QPR but solid at $30. I'll be buying more, expecting it to be even better in a year or two. (4659 views)
Tasted by jgkost on 9/25/2020 & rated 85 points: Not sure what the excitement is all about. Grassy nose, similar to a GSM but without the depth.  Tasted by La Cave d'Argent on 4/27/2020 & rated 90 points: Sourced from multiple vineyards with vines averaging over 80 years in age, this Zin diverges from the mean by virtue of its impressive structure and restraint. Deep ruby and beautifully fresh, it delivers an attractive payload of black raspberries, white pepper, savory herbs, clove and tapenade. Medium-bodied and with nicely integrated alcohol (listed as 14.4%), it stays dense on the middle palate but flexes more than a modicum of tannic grip. Long but tart and tannic on the back end, this is one of those rare cases where I would recommend patience with a Zinfandel, much less one labeled with a humble California appellation. Drink 2022-2026. (5089 views)

Tasted by Mark1npt on 4/14/2020 & rated 90 points: Toyed with giving this more than a 90 the first night, but it's an 89 now...had two-thirds of the bottle two days ago, so this last glass has sat in the bottle with the cork for the last 48 hours. It has only degraded a little. To me this zin was a bit formuleic, in a simple way. It had nice zin fruit, pepper/spice and alcohol. The mildly fragrant nose that was present 2 days ago is pretty much gone, yet some decent flavor profile and pepper remains which is a testament to the great fruit in '18 and decent winemaking. There's just nothing there to make you go, 'wow!'. I paid $23 for it and I would say that's a fair price for what you get. (6011 views)
Tasted by bestdamncab on 4/5/2020 & rated 92 points: Nose of black berry, allspice, with hints of black cherry. Raspberry, and earth, on the palate, big body, tasty, rich, needs 2 years to peak or decant for 4 hours, better day 2 as it drinks richer, slightly chilled helps too for some reason, and a long, flavorful finish, photo uploaded.  Tasted by ohne_musik on 3/18/2020 & rated 92 points: Side by side with the 2018 North Coast Syrah. Boy this is a beaut after a couple hours of air. There is sweetness and ripeness, plums and tutti-frutti, but I would not call this a fruit forward wine. Plenty of savory/umami, but very different than the Syrah - more like Japanese salted plum candy rather than meaty. Orange peel, fennel, and brown sugar without the sweetness. Alive and changing on the palate. A crowd pleaser and enough stuffing for the geeks. To me, it’s the best OVZ Bedrock has made, and it’s better than many single vineyard wines in other years. 92

Day 2: This has closed up a bit, showing less aromatically, more puckerish acid and a bit firmer on the palate. 90 (4005 views)
Tasted by jmull on 3/14/2020 & rated 90 points: In a different spot than a few months ago, showing a lot of ripe, primary fruit and juicy acids that keep it from being cloying. Tannins have already softened a tad, making this an easy drink. It remains a fantastic $25 bottle but I do miss some of the 2017’s rusticity and complexity, altho the latter may show up with a little more time sideways. (3569 views)

Tasted by hutch on 2/20/2020 & rated 87 points: I love the first impression. I got spices, and classic Zinfandel flavors. But when I went back to it after some time, and with more ability to focus on the wine, I was a little disappointed. Is there some oak here? My thing with this wine is that people always talk about this being $20 but it's $30 in my market and I just don't think I am excited about this for $30. This is a super solid Zin, and in no way overextracted, but I have some difficulty at $30, whereas at $20 I am like, sure, that's cool. Honestly, its a little flat. (4244 views)

Tasted by RoyaltyCoins on 1/10/2020 & rated 89 points: Medium purple

Nose: Blackberry pie, anise, blueberry, baking spice. Huge, candied projection.

Mouth: Blueberry and smashed blackberry notes come in on a relatively light frame, riding a zippy acidity that leads into a lightweight finish of peach preserve, orange peel, white pepper and spice.

Overall: While a fine effort, this does not have the thrust and complexity of past years. A bit zestier, with lighter weight on the palate and a shorter finish than past years, this is a bit disappointing vs what I expected. Drink now to 2025.

Tasted by stokeme on 1/9/2020 & rated 88 points: Did not purchase the 2017 OV. So after a year’s break, & opening this earlier in its life cycle than my normal, I am struck by how “red” dominates the overall character. Medium ruby, higher % of Grenache or Carignane? IMO, much lower % of blacks & Petite than OV’s from the 1st half of the decade. The Zin component seems less ripe than typical & hints at more Lodi fruit. Still, it follows careful, measured winemaking as the balance & structure are fine tuned offering a food friendly rendition. Pie cherry mingled with red berry.
1-2 years in cellar should enhance fresh tomato & basil pasta. Italian-esque. (4378 views)
Tasted by poppacork on 1/5/2020 & rated 88 points: This wine has a profile of blackberry on a slightly weedy background. The coarse tannins are quite prominent and the wine has elevated acidity and alcohol. Seems like a blend of overripe and underripe grapes. (4251 views)

Tasted by jmull on 12/31/2019 & rated 91 points: After reading a bunch of positive reviews, couldn’t resist popping one of these. And was not disappointed. Similar flavor profile to the 2017; the differences are primarily in the impression of structure. Where as the 17 is almost cab-like in its tannic structure, this feels more like a Turley or some other traditional, well-made zin, which makes it a little friendlier at this young age. Loads of fruit and some earth here. No evident alcohol. Still could use a little time to soften/open but, if you have multiple bottles, don’t be afraid to crack one early. That seems to be the theme of Bedrock’s 18s, at least at the entry level. 91+ (3599 views)

This shows fresh across the palate, lighter bodied, a melange of Sonoma, Contra Costa and Amador fruit with a Trousseau-like grip on the finish. As much as I love the SVD’s I could easily just buy 4 cases of 2018 Old Vines and not be disappointed. I may not say that after tasting all the ‘18s but right now... My EXC; [Check with this vendor if interested in their very COMPETITIVE price.]

Note: 1st tasted on 9/14/19, notes fairly consistent (3959 views)
Tasted by rougeamore on 11/2/2019 & rated 89 points: Nose of dark berries and plum. This wine has a nice freshness upon tasting with blackberries, dark mocha and some pepper notes. It lacked enough complexity and aftertaste for a 90's rating but has potential to get there with age. (3616 views)
Tasted by Matt T on 11/1/2019 & rated 89 points: High toned acid. Really preferred this on the second night after some of the hard edges disappeared. My preference would be to hold for another couple years, but others might enjoy this now. (3471 views)
Tasted by Vinnut on 10/27/2019 & rated 92 points: Deep reddish-purple garnet in color. Full, forward, & attractive nose of ripe fruit aromas of cherries, blackberries & dark plums with overtones of dusty/earthy & spice notes of cloves, earthy/dusty, herbs, some anise notes, dark cocoa & minerals. Full bodied with a very good concentration of well balanced, & smooth textured, lush & rich, ripe fruit flavors of dark cherries, blackberries & mulberries with spices, herbs, minerals & dark cocoa. Lingering finish. Drinks quite well at present with decanting & extended airing. More accessible & forward than past vintages, but has the structure to develop further with additional aging.  Tasted by Jazz Nut on 10/23/2019 & rated 92 points: Like others have said, this may be the best early drinking OVZ from Bedrock I have had. I coravined a few glasses of Bedrock Heritage (Bedrock Vineyard), Old Hill Vineyard, and OVZ. For drinking today, OVZ is such a pleasure, it's open for business, with so much finesse, flavor, and tension. Tannins on the back end, which only add to the story, but indicate this will continue to improve. The balance is SO there. Bedrock Vineyard was extremely shy, despite 3 hours in the decanter, Old Hill Ranch is going to be killer in a year or two (or more), as it's showing very well after a decant. But for me, OVZ is such a pleasurable wine. Sorry for the lack of descriptors, but again, many tasting notes recently are spot on. I just cannot say how well this is drinking for a 2018. I'll be sure to source more in addition to my recent Bedrock shipment. Fantastic QPR. For drinking enjoyment now, it may well be higher than 92. (4278 views)
Tasted by jgreco on 10/21/2019 & rated 92 points: I cannot think of a better $20 bottle. The Zinfandel Old Vine incorporates declassified single-vineyard fruit with the trademark Bedrock winemaking style. The 2018 has expressive nose of cassis, blackberry, and strawberry. On the palate, it is all delicious juicy red and black fruits. Good to drink now while you wait for the rest of your Bedrock to age, but should reward another 6-12 months in the cellar. (3976 views)
Tasted by scubaberman on 10/20/2019 & rated 92 points: Blackberries and raspberries, earthy notes, mild smoke and hints of new leather. Earthy with grippy tannins. Delicious wine already. (3747 views)
Tasted by ohne_musik on 10/19/2019 & rated 92 points: Nose is vibrant, showing lush blackberry jam, a hint of incense, and clods of freshly turned earth. On the palate, it’s surprisingly savory and grippy (what’s the stem inclusion here?), providing good structure for the copious blackberry jam that gives a fleeting impression of sweetness but is quite dry, with zingy acid and supporting elements of orange peel, ash, black licorice, and fennel seed. Quite plush and round, with a long finish. Clearly needs some time to shed some baby fat, but there’s an underlying tension and snap that demands one sit up and take notice. Easily one of the best young OVZs I’ve had from Bedrock and a killer value. (3814 views)
Tasted by pakabear on 10/19/2019: Consistent to last nights ratings, reall nice, fruitier than previous vintages. (3668 views)
Tasted by pakabear on 10/18/2019 & rated 91 points: Cherry, strawberry, pomegranate, cream, anise, vanilla and white pepper. Very good QPR as usual. (3624 views)
Tasted by Mootsie on 10/14/2019 & rated 91 points: A young’n, but with all the typical Bedrock spicy, high acidity, brambly, Zin goodness.

Noticeably higher acidity than I remember from past vintages. (3994 views)
Tasted by ROrmand on 10/12/2019 & rated 90 points: Another winner. Great food wine. Interesting, complex mix of sweet Zin fruit and a tangy, citrusy component. A bit of a pucker--but in context that's a good thing. Tremendous value; a must buy every year. (3672 views)
Tasted by srh on 9/14/2019: Winebar [2 Rosés, 2 Whts, & 8 Reds] from 09/13/19 + 8 Shared Bottles (Vintage Wines Ltd., San Diego, CA): "A blend of 85% Zin filled out with Mataro, Grenache, Alicante Bouschet, Carignan, P.S., & scant amounts of the many other varieties that can be found in California’s older, multifarious vyds; Many of our most venerable vyds contribute to this wine, including Bedrock, Teldeschi, Esola, Pagani, Papera, Evangelho, & Pato, filled in with lots from other old vyds throughout the state."

N: RIPE berries with notes of earth & HINTS of vanilla? Intensity lurking?

P: Med body; RNIDSH entry with NICE, almost swtish frt met by just a smidgen of astringent pucker which fairly seamlessly remains into & through the LONG, BALANCED finish with an almost elegant tangy/swtness to the few, firming, dusty tannins. A *beautifully* made wine with food right now, could improve for 6 mos or so, then drink into '23. My EXC-/EXC, the higher arguably for QPR. 2018 Bedrock Wine Co. Old Vine Zinfandel

From release letter:
2018 was a brilliant year for Zinfandel across California, and this wine reflects it. I have said it before, but it bears repeating—though this is one of the least expensive wines we make, in many ways it is the most important. First, it is the one Bedrock wine that trickles out to most markets, so if someone gets introduced to our wines, there is a good chance it is through this one. As such, it has to be reflective of the vibrant, fruit-filled yet fresh style we look for while crafting California’s great variety. Second, this is the wine that allows us to rehab old vineyards by giving us a place to put the fruit while we upgrade farming, pruning and soil health; at an average of 80 years of age, these lovely old vines appreciate the attention. The 2018 is a blend of 85% Zinfandel filled out with Mataro, Grenache, Alicante Bouschet, Carignan, Petite Sirah and scant amounts of the many other varieties that can be found in California’s older, multifarious vineyards. Many of our most venerable vineyards contribute to this wine, including Bedrock, Teldeschi, Esola, Pagani, Papera, Evangelho and Pato filled in with lots from other old vineyards throughout the state. This will provide great drinking pleasure with a decant early on, but as with most iterations of this bottling, it will develop nicely for a number of years.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.
