Tasted by Geert Swaelens on 9/16/2023 & rated 90 points: Geen nood aan uitleg :-) Enoteca Baldi Panzano einde congé. (179 views)
Tasted by despore on 9/15/2023 & rated 88 points: A: med garnet with loads of bricking
N: sour cherry, mushroom, leather, earth, dried baking spice, dust, some green/herbaceous notes
P: dry, high acidity, med body, 13% ABV, high fine tannins
C: good wine = there is still balance with remaining fruit and tertiary notes present enough to withstand the high acidity and high but fine tannins, med (+) intensity, med (-) concentration, med complexity and med finish. This is at the tail end and just hanging on - it is lacking in freshness and what is left of the fruit will fade soon. (454 views)
Tasted by perrez on 1/5/2023 & rated 92 points: Everything you would expect from a well aged Chianti Classico. 2 hours decanted, beautiful cherry, strawberry palate and easy drinking with a high flow rate, perfectly balanced. Brought for family dinner and had to speed up as my father was nearly drinking up the whole bottle alone. Perfect to duck breast. (776 views)
Tasted by explorer 1016 on 7/24/2019 & rated 88 points: Ok (2684 views)
Tasted by Jeffyboy on 2/22/2019 & rated 89 points: Tuscany 2006 (Winicjatywa): nose - vegetal in the first attack, later some black cherries and pate/boiled meats notes. taste: medium acidity, ripe tannins - large volume. some milky notes, trat, crispy black cherries; sweeter chocolate finish, long. (2736 views)
Tasted by Derek Darth Taster on 11/1/2018 & rated 91 points: Brunello Brunch. Last wine to round up the session. Tasted blind. Pop and poured.
Appearance is clear, deep intensity, ruby colour. Legs.
Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of ripe red cherries, red plums, earth, slight balsamic. Developing.
On the palate, dry, juicy high acidity, medium alcohol (13%), smooth medium+ tannins, full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of savoury tar earth, red cherries, red plums, blueberries, graphite, sweet balsamic, some herbs. Medium+ finish.
Very good quality. Quite clearly some Sangiovese dominant wine. Drinking well now. Could still age another 3-4 years.
85% Sangiovese and the rest Canaiolo with other varietals. (2997 views)
Tasted by Ridgerunner on 11/16/2017 & rated 92 points: half bottle ripe and ready to drink beautifully! (3573 views)
Tasted by JDB on 10/30/2017 & rated 89 points: Drink up (3358 views)
Tasted by Vinogan(s) on 8/31/2017 & rated 88 points: From magnum. Maybe that's why it was better than previous bottles, as there was still life left in this one. Nicely evolved nose, but unfortunately the mouth shows too much bitterness. (2523 views)

Tasted by Kento61 on 1/13/2017 & rated 90 points: The wine is drinking wonderful right now. Very well balanced for a chianti. One of the finer years. (2363 views)
Tasted by Kris G on 11/1/2015 & rated 87 points: the balance wasn't there, rather disappointing showing (4458 views)
Tasted by Euge67 on 10/27/2015 & rated 87 points: Difficile recensire questa bottiglia.
Appena aperto e nelle ore a seguire, un chianti molto banale, slabbrato, senza corpo e "dignità".
Avanzata mezza bottiglia.
(3710 views)
Tasted by fraundor on 9/29/2015 & rated 89 points: - Crimsom color. (2976 views)
Tasted by IconeWino on 8/22/2015 & rated 84 points: Can't believe this was Chianti. Dark stewed prunes/raisins. Tasted like a bad Amarone. (3379 views)
Tasted by j30 on 7/13/2015 & rated 88 points: A bit aged upon opening with nose of tea and alcohol. Became younger and more fruity on the second day. Wouldn't risk buying more bottles from this year though. (3149 views)
Tasted by JSOL on 2/17/2015 & rated 87 points: Quite advanced. Not especially expressive nose - hints of white tea, prune and dust. Balanced and smooth but not especially complex palate. Quite an international style reminiscent of burgundy in the mid-palate and finishing almost like a feminine elegant bordeaux. Blackcurrant and cedar on the finish or am I imagining things?  Tasted by TheWineMonkey on 5/30/2014: Perhaps I didn't leave this enough time to breath but I found the oak influence a little to much for my taste. (3482 views)
Tasted by Filippo on 2/28/2014 & rated 88 points: Honestly disappointed. Was expecting a glorious Chianti Classico from a classic vintage...and one of the best producers....but found an overly austere wine. (3734 views)
Tasted by Rick and Debra on 12/26/2013: Xmas 2013 (3660 views)
Tasted by whits on 12/2/2013 & rated 88 points: cherry and wood on the nose, medium body with a plush feel, the palate shows traditional flavors of dried cherry, wood, leather and focused mineral on the finish, finesse and balance? yes; wonderful with a tomato based beefy stew (2997 views)
Tasted by lobsterww on 7/31/2013 & rated 92 points: Really smooth and elegant. Needs a few hours to open up. (3271 views)
Tasted by Baron Slick on 5/31/2013 & rated 90 points: Mature, mahogany cherry core. Old wine aromas of dark cherries, leather, earth, smoke, dried flowers, and a whiff of cinnamon. Displays a medium weight, round body, texture, balance, and length, with mouth coating flavors of cherries, raspberries, a spice box undertone, and a persistent crushed rock minerality on the finish. Excellent. (3536 views)
Tasted by Wigbert on 5/18/2013 & rated 90 points: Not bad. Will last for a while yet. Reasonable value for money. (3139 views)
Tasted by cweiss on 4/11/2013: From 375, pleasant enough but fruit opened up much more by last pour at end of dinner. (3156 views)
Tasted by fc1910 on 3/1/2013 & rated 86 points: had not drunk a fine Chianti Classico for some time, so for another try bought a high priced wine (30.- euros for a normal annata) from a well recommended producer, should be a very good year for Chianti too......., typical smell, little mineralic, cherries, on the palate fresh, tart, still packed with acidity, seams still so too young, with some air in a big glass the wine not really evolves, keeps a little harsh, midweight body with a fine fruit of amarenacherries, long finish, but...... let me a little disturbed......, should evolve by some more years of cellaring, 85- 89? (3455 views)
Tasted by md20 on 2/8/2013 & rated 92 points: Sehr feiner, duftener Chianti. Zeigt bei mittlerer Struktur sehr gute finesse und Klasse. Sehr empfehlenswert, bester Jahrgang im vergangenen Jahrzehnt! Prost! (2512 views)
Tasted by PaulHig on 1/25/2013 & rated 85 points: Fruit seems to have dried out, just left with herbaceous bitterness! Not sure this is my favourite style of wine! But did drink alongside Pergolia 07 which has richer, riper fruit and was much more to my taste. (2524 views)
Tasted by looiwt on 3/26/2012 & rated 90 points: As Chianti Classicos go, this is something in the Champions League. Pricier as well but well worth it. Had this over a steak dinner at the glitzy steakhouse Cut. Wow, the nose is rustic seduction - almost Brunello-like in its offering of sweet, dusty cherries. On the palate this is rich and dense as a brick, with dark cherry fruit, ripe tannins and a slight mineral streak, with a medium length finish. As often, there are some odd bitter wood, chlorine like notes that disappeared as the wine aerated. 2006 was a very even vintage offering well-balanced wines, and I think this can go on for a long while yet, a good 5-8 years. (4770 views)
Tasted by EMTAME on 2/16/2012 & rated 90 points: Very consistent. Nice bottle of chianti, if a bit less substantial than I'd hoped. (4099 views)
Tasted by EMTAME on 1/29/2012 & rated 90 points: Similar to my 6/22/11 review. Wish it had a bit more on the mid-palate. (3960 views)
Tasted by DaleW on 1/24/2012 flawed bottle: corked (375) (3892 views)
Tasted by jamesdoeser on 12/19/2011 & rated 72 points: disappointing. maybe drank too young. very tight. (4165 views)
Tasted by PSPatrick on 11/26/2011 & rated 88 points: From a half-bottle. I poured the wine into a decanter and served the first glass after a few minutes. The wine was bright medium ruby in colour. It offered cherry, dried fruits, roasted notes, nuts, spices and clove on the nose. On the palate the medium-bodied wine showed cherry, baked fruits, nutty flavours, spices and clove, with dry tannins, medium-level acidity and medium length. The wine was drinking well, might improve with another year or two in the cellar and should keep well for about five years. (3926 views)
Tasted by DaleW on 10/18/2011: Big, a bit tannic, raspberry and cherry, a little hint of oregano. I think this will be good, but not showing that well for now. B- f (4033 views)
Tasted by fraundor on 9/17/2011: leider verkühlt daher keine Stellungnahme, dürfte noch einiges Lagerpotential haben! (4094 views)
Tasted by dedrislee on 7/12/2011 & rated 90 points: Last bottle. See my last note, still I think it is drrunk too early. QPR 90/43 A5P5C5 (5415 views)
Tasted by EMTAME on 6/22/2011 & rated 90 points: Starts off promising and has a lot of nice black cherry fruit with some complementary spice notes, but seems to be lacking a bit of heft/stuffing in the mid-palate at this point. Certainly a good wine, but I was hoping for a little more based on Galloni's review. (4826 views)
Tasted by dedrislee on 6/14/2011 & rated 90 points: Light ruby-red, looks diluted and too young. Aromatic nose of warm forest fruits, spices, with earth, mineral and Tuscan undergrowth. On the palate, rather closed, fair balances of concentration of black fruits, blackcurrants, smoke, oak, velvety long finish with fair firm tannin, bitterness lingering. Further tasting may improve rating, still may not overwhelm 2004. (4752 views)
Tasted by PaulHig on 5/13/2011 & rated 86 points: Smooth silky chocolate on entry, but bitter, slightly course tannin on the finish. Also lacks a splash of acidity. (4982 views)
Tasted by j30 on 5/8/2011 & rated 90 points: Delicious wine. Dark fruit, chocolate, herb. Plush mouthfeel, mild tannins, nice acidity upon finish. (4786 views)
Tasted by JohnFalstaff on 4/28/2011 & rated 90 points: Nose: leather, earth and limestone. Taste: evident yet not obtrusive tannins. Flavors as detected by nose plus roasted almonds. Long finish. Overpriced in Russian market. (4821 views)
Tasted by rjonwine@gmail.com on 3/2/2011 & rated 91 points: Castello di Ama tasting with owner Lorenza Sebasti Pallanti (Beltramo's Wines and Spirits, Menlo Park, California): Medium dark red color; dried cherry, tangy, tart plum nose; tight, tart plum, tart red fruit palate with medium-plus acidity, needs 2-plus years; medium-plus finish (5583 views)
Tasted by Eric Guido on 2/8/2011 & rated 89 points: The Italian Wine Masters (Hilton, 1335 Avenue of the Americas, New York): The nose showed dark red fruits, savory beef notes and animal musk. On the palate, I found red fruit against a balanced frame but little else before the wines tannin numbed my palate. With age, this wine may blossom but on this day it was dwarfed by the structured 2004 and the rich 2007. (6942 views)
Tasted by JDB on 12/13/2010 & rated 90 points: Such a tasty Sangiovese at such a young age , I am very pleasantly suprised (5406 views)
Tasted by TexasBob on 10/13/2010 & rated 88 points: Lite red color. Strawberries abound. The finish reminds me of a nice cabernet franc. Mild sweetness and vegetal notes on the finish. Some tobacco. Fairly fruit-forward. Drunk in Tokyo with Alessandro and Paul from KG. (5523 views)
Tasted by peternelson on 9/21/2010 & rated 92 points: This wine is very aromatic, showing prunes, stewed fruit notes, amazing mix of spices, and the like. So enticing...The body is soft and rich with excellent concentration, but still elegant and structured with notes of earth and underbrush. One of the best Chianti's I've had in a very long time. This is a very fine wine, and is the entry level bottling for this producer! (1782 views)
Tasted by wingc123 on 8/30/2010: Decent wine with emerging cherry and tar notes. Not overly complex. Still tannic and young. Good with pasta dish last night. (5843 views)
Tasted by hubas on 7/12/2010 & rated 84 points: A bit of truffles was all i really got from this wine. (5665 views)
Tasted by dcb10 on 3/7/2010 & rated 85 points: Light red colour, cherry nose which also comes out on the palate. Subtle tannins and a nice long finish. Wanted more fruit. Easy drinking, needs food. (6048 views)

Producer website
Location on Google Map

Castello di Ama’s 65.38 hectares of specialised vineyards, officially enrolled in the Chianti Classico Register, are located at elevations between 390 and 530 metres in calcareous-clay, pebble-rich soils.
Part of the vineyards were planted between 1974 and 1978, at an average density of 3,000 vines per hectare, while newer plantings at a density of 5,300 vines per hectare, starting in 1996 and continuing to the present date, replace the outdated vineyards.
The vines are vertically trained, to the open lyre pruned to the Guyot system, and to spurred cordon.
The varieties, grafted onto rootstock 420, are 80% Sangiovese and 20% Malvasia Nera, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc.

Sangiovese, Canaiolo, Malvasia Nera, Merlot

Sangiovese Blend

Sangiovese blend is used in CellarTracker for Italian wines to represent wines predominantly made of Sangiovese and blended with traditional Italian grapes. It is different than SuperTuscan which is a blend of Sangiovese with non-traditional (eg Bordeaux) varieties, often in closer to equal portions. For example, Chianti is at least 80% Sangiovese and will always be listed Sangiovese blend.
