Community Tasting Notes (average 92.6 pts. and median of 93 pts. in 63 notes)

Tasted by ghanbai on 7/18/2021 & rated 98 points: Better than all Shiraz I had ever tasted, other than the over 10 cases of Marquis Philips Integrity & ‘9’ over the past 15 years (774 views)
Tasted by wine4ever on 8/17/2017 & rated 90 points: The last of our case. We decanted (had lots of sediment), and drank over 3+ hours. Amazing how well these have stood the test of time. It was great to taste these evolve over the years. Though past it's peak window now, it was still delicious - awesome nose, huge fruit with vanilla and some hints of licorice, cedar, spice. A huge wine, great body, and still fresh tasting. Tannins completely resolved, low acidity, and alcohol well concealed. It did seem to decline rather quickly near the 3 hour mark, so I'd recommend drinking over next 2-3 years if you have any left. (2683 views)
Tasted by danielbleier on 7/7/2017 & rated 87 points: This wine felt a faded, although not terrible by any stretch. We moved on to some better wines quickly, however. (2631 views)
Tasted by Senso-beak on 1/26/2017 & rated 94 points: Opened with dinner. Dark, purplish/deep red showing the slightest hints of maturity. Jammy nose that needs to be coaxed out of the glass, but there's humidity, bramble, spice and everything nice - cherry, blackberry, raspberry, plum. Full bodied and bombastic fruit bomb to be sure. Amazing this is 16 years old - could have been bottled 2 years ago. I can't imagine what this tasted like in 2003. Massive core of fruit - almost confected and candied syrup qualities. The full cornucopia of reds and blacks is here - and there are the hints of evolution in there too - some very mild tea, tar, cedary elements as well. This is a monster wine still at this stage, and I think the fruit will drive this for another 5-10 years. You could call this a late harvest Shiraz or a near-Port. To some this might be too much - as there is a wickedly full throttle fruit profile - but it's not overly alcoholic, or pruney or sappy - no cooked elements, or anything. It's fresh and jammy all the way. (2845 views)
 Tasted by wine4ever on 6/3/2016 & rated 91 points: Really good....as always. (3421 views)
Tasted by Ex-Ray on 3/24/2016 & rated 93 points: Garnet with lighter edges, still almost opaque. Very aromatic, with typical Aussie shiraz components. Medium-full flavors, soft and very drinkable, slight touch of prunes and sherry after a few hours. It's slightly beyond its peak though still very enjoyable, but definitely time to drink up and drink within a couple of hours after opening.

Tasted by wine4ever on 10/24/2015 & rated 90 points: Still very good. Believe it or not, this wine has totally mellowed out. Great fruit and spice. Caution....the alcohol, while no longer noticeable on the palate, will still make you goofy after a couple glasses. This is some very nice juice. (2241 views)
Tasted by Montecalvo on 6/14/2014 & rated 91 points: This was a great surprise. It was totally intact. No flaws. No weird Aussie fruit issues. Just a great syrah nose and palate. Good concentration and length. Still more youngish than old but it has some maturity. This has many years ahead. (3429 views)
Tasted by Taronti on 6/8/2014 & rated 85 points: Dark red. Small amount of fine sediment. Gamey nose blew off after 30 minutes revealing dark fruits, stewed plum and vanilla. Alcoholic. Full fruit palate spoiled by metallic, saccharine finish - think diet soda - which may not bother others but I find most unpleasant. Guess I just don't have the taste phenotype for aging, South Australian fruit bombs! This wine was more impressive on release. (3069 views)
Tasted by wine4ever on 8/27/2013 & rated 92 points: An Espresso with blueberry syrup anyone? Whoa, at 12 years old, this wine is still going strong. Still plenty of tannins and acidity so it goes great with food (had with lasagna - a surprisingly perfect match). I can still feel it's alcohol bite. Sometimes I wish this was a more tame wine, other times, I love it's exuberance. (3370 views)
Tasted by GimmeTheBottle on 11/19/2012: Awesome fruit. Really big, a real mouthful. The next day it really lost out. I wish we didn't wait omit and had finished it the day we opened it. (4374 views)
Tasted by Gargamel on 6/9/2012 & rated 95 points: i didn't keep notes on this as it was consumed at the end of a dinner party. has a lightning bolt of acidity which carries dark fruit, espresso and chocolate. this was palate refreshing even at the end of the night. best i have ever tasted by far from the now defunct partnership. i would call this a drink now bottle. decanted for 2 hours, lots of sediment. (4336 views)
Tasted by Jason on 4/5/2012 & rated 89 points: Bought on release and cellar stored since then. On release this was a monster in all aspects. Now after 11 years it is still alive but it's not a better wine. The nose is solid with loads of smoke and fruit. The palate has calmed down considerly. At first the palate was thin and short. After an hour of air it has really opened. Lots of blackberry and vanilla. Little sign of tannins. I don't get any secondary development. Overall it is a good wine but lacking any complexity. If you have any of these left, they have life left but I wouldn't wait for more aging. (3843 views)
Tasted by rmcnees on 12/10/2011 & rated 88 points: Consistent notes with earlier tastings of this ten year old shiraz. Super ripe and rich Amarone-like raisin scents and spice flavors overpower the forward blackberry liquor, ripe plum fruits, tar and licorice - much more so than earlier tastings. Not nearly as polished as other vintages. (3938 views)
Tasted by Jack on 3/21/2011 & rated 93 points: One of the best showing yet. Very nice for a big Aussie. (3870 views)
Tasted by StainedGlass on 12/2/2010 & rated 91 points: Lots of debris, so it needed decanting. A big dark purple brooding wine that must have settled down, as it does not have (or no longer has) the heat of a wine with 16% alcohol, and the tannins have settled down as well. Rich, and the fruit fruit is almost port like, with raisins, licorice, dark cherries, and tobacco. Quite enjoyable now. (3684 views)
Tasted by Charlie Carnes on 5/12/2010: I just cannot believe the coconut-vanilla oak. Hey, many of my friends really liked it. I think it is way overblown and over the top... but I knew that going into it. (4076 views)
Tasted by OneLastSyrah on 12/29/2009 & rated 92 points: 16% ABV. Dark garnet in the glass, somewhat translucent and slightly clear at the rim. No longer quite as black and primary as it was closer to release. Baking spices (clove, cinnamon) on the nose initially then a touch of sweet vanilla. Medium-full bodied with red and black berry fruit and a chocolate nuance. This seems to have lost some of its freshness, but for a moment I think this actually seemed more youthful with a few minutes of air, and then the bottle was empty, my last. Good. (4448 views)
Tasted by wine4ever on 9/14/2009 & rated 92 points: Will be drinking this over 2 or 3 nights.....

1st night...Great nose (matches the palate), and youthful appearance....blackish purple. Heavy bodied. Still very fruit driven....blueberries, licorice, chocolate, vanilla, american oak...still tastes like it is out of the gate. A big wine...yet creamy, silky texture....seductive, makes you want more. Has lost it's babyfat. No brett. It also went great with food (I didn't think I would ever say that). My leg 'o lamb was a 99 on the food scale, btw. Overall....if you like highly alcoholic beverages (16%), this would be a 94-95 pt wine, but I don't, so that brings it down a good bit...to a 92. For $28 at release...a killer QPR.

2nd night..... I'd describe this night as an 'Aussie Campfire night".....wood, smoke, eucalyptus, smores, blueberry cobbler, and a shot of bourbon. If this appeals to you, find yourself a bottle. Alcohol doesn't seem as noticeable tonight. Still a 92 though. Sorry, not gonna make it to night 3....(that's a good thing). Drink over next 5 years. (4472 views)
Tasted by cadamson on 9/12/2009 & rated 85 points: Youthfully dark, with some violet bricking on the edges. Pretty typical Marquis Philips nose. Lots of tar, dark fruit, vanilla and pepper on the nose. Rich, decadent, jammy dark fruit, lots of oak, lots of alcohol. Better balanced than I expected, still too over the top for me, better than later vintages. Fell apart by day 3. (4479 views)
Tasted by Jack on 5/26/2009 & rated 91 points: Weakest showing but still very good. (4620 views)
Tasted by numcwrt2 on 7/3/2008 & rated 95 points: My 6th and final bottle of this. Rich nose of tar, black cherries, black rasberries and loam. The palate was a super rich, silky smooth with a finish that went on and on. Dense, black fruits with hints of licorice. I've drank ~1 per year since release and this is the best bottle and is in the realm of RP loft 96 pts. It has shed the most of the baby fat and gloppy fruit that many experienced in the first several years of life and has taken on nuance and depth. Wish I had more as this will continue to improve and evolve. (4931 views)
Tasted by rjonwine@gmail.com on 4/10/2008 & rated 91 points: 2001 Cali Syrah vs. 2001 Aussie Shiraz Blindtasted (Tom's House, Palo Alto, CA): Group's #4 (my #3) – 69 pts.; 6, 0, 2, 2 - black red violet color with cherry red meniscus; ripe berry, blue fruit and American oak nose; ripe, juicy blueberry and blackberry palate with milk chocolate edges; medium finish 91+ pts. (16% alcohol) (3730 views)
Tasted by Winevestor on 9/24/2007 & rated 91 points: This is a heavy, heavily fruit forward Marquis shiraz. As it ages it is becoming a little less balanced - the fruit is receding and the tannins are still there. Interestingly is was better on it second night than on its first (5449 views)
Tasted by Jack on 9/23/2007 & rated 93 points: Some of the in your face jammyness of youth is gone but what's left is still a rich slightly sweet mouthful of shiraz. (5521 views)
Tasted by tcfishler on 8/23/2007 & rated 86 points: This bottle suffered for having not been consumed with food or with friends. Dark red. Rich milk chocolate dominates the somewhat high-toned nose. Coarse in the mouth, even rustic perhaps, with oak drying up the considerable fruit and flesh. Alcohol makes its presence known not with sharp heat but with palate fatigue and mind-numbing. (5510 views)
Tasted by tcfishler on 7/7/2007 & rated 90 points: Opaque purple. Huge aromas of lackberry liqueur, charry oak, and Bailey's. Thick and sweet, though not cloyingly so, and presented on a velvety surface of extract and glycerin. Evolving at a geologic pace, but at its current phase it's still an excellent cap to a grillfest. (5545 views)
Tasted by mouton45 on 4/7/2007 & rated 88 points: Good for about an hour after opening, then started to fall apart. Oak masked the fruit. Last bottle (6143 views)
Tasted by cgrimes on 2/8/2007 & rated 90 points: Wine Club BYO (The Grapevine, Salem, MA): Tasted blind. Purple opaque. Blast of dark fruits on the nose. On the palate, chunky blackberry, raspberry, licorice, pepper with enough age to subdue the heat. Well-balanced. Not my style but very well-crafted and yummy. (6670 views)
Tasted by GlenD on 9/21/2006 & rated 93 points: Great concentration, creamy mouthfeel, nice finish. Lots of sediment in the last glass. Just great to drink now. (6827 views)
Tasted by GlenD on 8/5/2006 & rated 94 points: Here's proof that a wine that was once too hot can come together. Velvety, silky, fruit and spice. Great pairing with lamb. (6755 views)
Tasted by PHerreid on 4/30/2006: Shishkebobs--lots of deep berry fruit, almost jammy (7008 views)
Tasted by GlenD on 4/1/2006 & rated 93 points: This bottle threw a curve ball at me. On the first evening, it was not giving up a lot of fruit and seemed lean and a touch hot compared to previous bottles. It never woke up at all that evening. The next day, it had gained weight, depth and spice. The heat was gone and much more like I expected. (7148 views)
Tasted by Hand Doc on 3/4/2006: Really coming together nicely. Several years ago, a little hot an disjointed. Now with a great mouthfeel, silky/creamy but not the velvet glove of some of the more opulent aussie shiraz. Packed with blueberries and vanilla with spicy pepper in the background. This will go for a while. 94pts (7167 views)
Tasted by johnleeper on 2/19/2006 & rated 95 points: Fabulous concentration of blueberries, glycerin and spice. This is the real deal. (7258 views)

Tasted by texaswino on 8/31/2005 & rated 94 points: 2001 Marquis Philips Shiraz 9

My last bottle of the 01. I decided to hold one for a couple of years to see how it evolved. The aroma takes me back to the several bottles of this I consumed after release. Licorice, blackberries, chocolate and pepper. The palate is similar with sweet dark fruit and pepper. Super stuff that will surely last for several more years. Wish i had a few more. 94-95pts (7160 views)
Tasted by GlenD on 8/13/2005 & rated 96 points: The Best for The Best 2005 (Chicago NW Suburbs): Bam. Just wonderful. I had given up on this wine as being too hot. I read a very favorable tasting note and decided to include it in a dinner party. Deep blueberries, structure, spice and smoke. No heat. Huge pure fruit. Six people out of eight at dinner voted this in their top 3. The top wine by my palate. (8124 views)
Tasted by OneLastSyrah on 5/5/2005: Aussie's at Momo's: Blind Red 3 - Big nose. Concentrated vanilla and black cherry-black berry fruit. Liqueur. Sweet, concentrated, lengthy. A touch hot. Pretty good. (3417 views)
Tasted by Jason on 3/18/2005 & rated 94 points: Dinner with Coffee Rubbed Ribeyes, Grilled Potatoes, Endive, Baby Bok Choy, and 01 MP 9 Shiraz (Issaquah, WA): This wine continues to settle down and become a good drink. The nose is fainter than before (I gave it less air this time. It really seems to need 3-4 hours.). It shows chocolate, smoke, ripe blackberry, and only a hint of heat. The palate seems less dense than before but better balanced. I find flavors that match the nose. The most memorable part is the initial rush of sweet, smoke blackberries. This wine may lack a bit in finesse, but it makes up for it in power and purity of fruit. (6483 views)
Tasted by John on 1/5/2005 & rated 94 points: WOW! this is so thick I felt like I could spread it on a piece of toast. Talk about Jammy! looks like a black hole. Nothing gets through this beast. After letting it sit for an hour the heat went away and gave place to thick blueberry along with a touch of smoke and roasted meats. I can't really describe it but it seems to be a meal by itself. this is a WOW wine! (5826 views)
Tasted by OneLastSyrah on 10/4/2004: ($30) My first thought was, "this has really calmed down and mellowed out." Then I began to think it was a little disjointed and showing some alcohol late. Anyway, it was still pretty tasty, and a huge fruit bomb of vanilla, raspberry, and blueberry milkshake. (1982 views)
Tasted by RAD on 8/24/2004 & rated 96 points: Viscous, inky purple black. Effusively fragrant nose of blueberry pie, graham cracker, and vanilla. On the palate, loads of blueberries and blackberries, with some pepper, and nicely integrated, drying tannins. Looooooong finish. A meal in itself. Stupendous. (5074 views)
Tasted by fine137 on 6/15/2004 & rated 93 points: Almost port like, but really good! No food required. (5050 views)
Tasted by Eric on 5/14/2004 & rated 93 points: Seattle Tasting Group does Syrah (Seattle, WA, USA): The nose shows blueberry and smoke. Oh my goodness, the palate shows a very sweet attack with searing, tannic power. This shows a creamy vanilla and blueberry personality, and the finish is very long and shows blueberry pie. Tasted blind, I in fact picked this wine correctly. (6454 views)
Tasted by Jason on 5/2/2004 & rated 95 points: This wine has settle nicely in the year since I have had it. The nose has hints of MP wines but is a bit more refined. It shows chocolate, blackberry, and a bit of the MP signature Graham cracker. The palate is lush, deep, and seamless. I found more chocolate and blackberry with hints of mint. Long, smooth finish. I don't know how much this will improve with age, but there is not much reason to wait. (4949 views)
Tasted by OneLastSyrah on 2/4/2004: ($25) Dinner Out at Suze with Mona: Yummy once again. Effusive, sweet blackberry vanilla Shiraz juice. Oozing with fruit. Creamy, lush. Nice! (1923 views)
Tasted by SacredCow on 10/1/2003 & rated 94 points: Tasted at an informal Denver offline on 10/01/03.

The tasting began after seven hours of decanting time. This is a huge wine, my number one of this tasting. It displays blackberry, licorice, and creamy oak on the nose, with a bit of black pepper. On the attack, the fruit really shines through, with some blueberry and raspberry chiming in through the midpalate. Creamy vanilla oak throughout, with pepper becoming more prominent towards the back of the palate. A very long finish of one minute plus, the longest of the tasting.

Round two began after about 8-1/2 hours of decanting. Lavender makes an appearance on the nose. On the palate, one taster now notes a hint of green bean to go along with the fruit. Mid to late palate, the pepperiness seems to have morphed into more of an Asian spice taste. Throughout the rest of the tasting and the after tasting, all of the tasters kept commenting on the Asian spice component. The alcohol, while present, is not overwhelming.

This is probably the best this wine has ever shown for me. This could have been one of Sparky’s hand picked bottles. It was also the first empty decanter we had. Now, I need to keep my hands off my two remaining bottles. (4058 views)
Tasted by OneLastSyrah on 7/3/2003: ($30) Big, sweet vanilla and black fruits in this wine. The creamy oak quality seemed somewhat reduced from my last tasting. Nice. (1693 views)
Tasted by Eric on 2/9/2003 & rated 94 points: Seattle Tasting Group does Syrah & Shiraz (Seattle, WA, USA): On pure points this was the WOTN and was truly impressive. Pepper, smoke, blackness, and loads of blueberry. On the palate this had searing tannin, massive extract and reams of fruit. The finish was a little dry but exuded power, power and more POWER! The average rating of the group was over 93 points. (7553 views)
Tasted by Jason on 2/9/2003 & rated 96 points: Toasted Vanilla, blackberry, portlike. Tastes of toasted vanilla, minty, and black fruit. Decadent nose. Huge (4974 views)
Tasted by OneLastSyrah on 12/2/2002: ($30) Served blind - Cinnamon, vanilla, and creamy chocolate on the nose. More rich creamy fruit on the palate. Spike of late structure. Nice fruit bomb. (1713 views)
Tasted by RAD on 11/6/2002 & rated 96 points: Couldn't wait! Saturated, opaque, purple-black ink. Unbelievable concentration. Grilled herbs, blackberry jam on the nose and palate, where it's even more dense. Long finish. Seamless; phenomenal. (4697 views)
