Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 92.8 pts. and median of 93 pts. in 35 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Corgi on 1/29/2021: Cellared for ten years. Lucid gold color. Quite a bit of energy, vibrancy with an attacking bite to it. This has some richness and depth to it. (647 views)
Tasted by Chekib m. on 12/26/2020 & rated 93 points: Medium golden with nice tiny bubbles.
Very intense deep and complex aromas of ginger bread, ripe red Berries : rapsberry, red currant and red cherries. some hints of old oak.
It has a nice frothy mousse followed by a full body for a champagne. High acidity with similar flavours of red berries, confit lemon and spices. Mineral. Very long and complex finish. Still young.
This is a serious champagne that screams for food. I think it needs few more years in bottle to fully integrate. (535 views)
Tasted by Ben H. on 10/14/2019: Everything in harmony. Younger than Ledru's 2006 Brut Nature, but very much ready to drink also. (771 views)
Tasted by brooklynguy on 3/3/2018: Gorgeous wine. It's saline and savory and with such ripe and beautiful jet black fruit, and it takes an hour for it to fully harmonize - this wine is still growing into itself. I wish I'd waited til now on all my bottles because this one is utterly beautiful. (2105 views)
Tasted by Kurtjo on 2/17/2018 & rated 93 points: Note to self. Les forrige notat. Lik forrige flaske. Åpner litt varm i frukten, men strammer seg skikkelig opp med luft. Herlig vin. (1077 views)
Tasted by 5laton on 1/12/2018: A great bottle of this. Still approaching the early peak, with plenty of bubbles. Beautiful fresh cut white mushroom and matsutake, developing golden fruit, gentle richness and some subtle oxidative notes. Wish they were all like this -- unfortunately this wine is closed with a very low-quality agglomerate cork, and so there is significant variation from bottle to bottle. (1082 views)
Tasted by mjf@ulkner on 12/22/2017 & rated 93 points: Light yellow. Bright exuberant mousse. Granny Smith apple and tangerine fruit. Soft brioche on finish. Ridiculously good for <$60 per bottle. This is great now, but will probably continue to develop over next 3-4 years. (896 views)
Tasted by salil on 3/24/2017 & rated 94 points: Last of my bottles, and absolutely outstanding. Layers of citrus and red fruit, brioche, floral notes, and chalky mineral notes that become more intense with air; all coming together seamlessly on a frame that's both powerful yet very light on its feet. There's tremendous focus and elegance here and impressive length, and I wish I had more. (1563 views)
Tasted by Kurtjo on 3/15/2017 & rated 92 points: Herlig pinotvin. Søte epler og bær. Spicy og saltaktig mineralitet. Klar og konsentrert. Masse fine bobler. Knall til pris og årgang. Tror den blir enda mer kompleks med lagring. (947 views)
Tasted by acyso on 1/19/2017 & rated 90 points: January birthday craziness (Chicago, IL): Very dense and powerful champagne. This shows some moderately ripe white fruit, but cloaked with powerful acidity and chalkiness. The acidity has some real lemony qualities, and there's just a slight hint of bread on this. While this is without a doubt good, I'm not totally sure I understand the cult status. (1799 views)
Tasted by brooklynguy on 6/14/2016: A great showing for this wine. Broad and lush with pure and pretty fruit and creamy notes, a saline chalky tone permeates the mid palate and finish. We drank this out of a red Burgundy glass and while I can understand why that seems appealing, I would so much have preferred to drink this out of a narrower stem, like the Riedel Sommelier glass, as this would likely have revealed the wine's inherent focus. Lovely wine from a warm year, wine that has plenty of life ahead of it. (2586 views)
Tasted by WMWG on 9/15/2015 & rated 94 points: My WOTN. Just an all-around terrific wine. Bruised red apple skins with a citrusy/ lemon back end. Early on there were subtle brioche notes on the front end but these fell to the background with air. Very well put-together, showing a Krug-esq. bass note on the back side of the palate that goes far to balance out the sharp acids. Super elegant with a suave, refined mouthfeel.
Excellent – Drink or Hold (1577 views)
Tasted by salil on 9/15/2015 & rated 94 points: Thrilling wine, very good at first, but as it warms up a little and sees some air, it shifts gears and a few hours later, it's absolutely compelling. So much going on here with brioche and doughy notes, ripe apple and red fruited flavours, and more savoury, earthy bass notes that emerge with more time. Incredibly polished and graceful on the palate, and I'm glad I have one more. (2026 views)
Tasted by indiscriminate palate on 9/15/2015 & rated 93 points: Lots of lemon on the very pronounced nose, and apple pie (or just apple pie crust). Very creamy, fairly rich palate. Initially, served too cold and showing a shorter finish, but as it opened, became very long, rich. Ripe lemon, pie crust on the palate. This is a big, but very well-baanced wine. Very good. (1820 views)
Tasted by Gian on 6/26/2015: the nose was little dirty , no fruits and no citrus, on the palate little better but not good as usual . definitely not a perfect bottle (1571 views)
Tasted by ekallio on 4/30/2015: Full-bodied, very ripe flavors, quite soft mouthfeel. Complex on the palate, layers of flavors open up when you chew on the wine. Overall somehow autumnal in style, quite broad and ripe as opposed to something sleek and elegant. Excellent, though I still think it could use a bit more acidity and persistence on the finish. (1289 views)
Tasted by NostraBacchus on 1/23/2015 & rated 93 points: Saline mineral notes, crushed rocks, a touch of smoke, some tobacco, orange zest and yellow fruits. Medium+ body with high acidity providing lots of tension. Very good length. A razor-sharp Blanc de Noirs full of tension with saline acidity. Really nice! (1801 views)
Tasted by 5laton on 9/21/2014: Subtle, lovely toasted bread nose, some mirabelle plum. Ripe yellow fruit palate with subtle spice and toasty richness. A bit closed, but with air it shows more personality. Needs a few years I think. (1139 views)
Tasted by salil on 9/14/2014 & rated 93 points: Another excellent bottle, very similar to the one I had in June this year. Bright fruit, sweeter doughy and biscuity elements, and more exotic floral and gingery notes coming together very seamlessly, and constantly evolving and becoming more complex with air. (2012 views)
Tasted by bill00 on 8/31/2014 flawed bottle: Off, overripe aromas that were bordering on rotten. Opened two bottles with similar notes. Not sure what to make of this, as have had great bottles of this wine in the past. Hopefully just a couple of off, perhaps poorly stored bottles. (1495 views)
Tasted by Atreyu on 7/27/2014 & rated 91 points: spiced rum, rich, acidic. Is putting on weight fast. Still more to come, but won't last forever. (1545 views)
Tasted by salil on 6/4/2014 & rated 93 points: In a great place. Really complex with layers of pure red and white fruited flavours accented by doughy, brioche, toasty and chalky notes, very polished and slightly creamy on the palate though with great purity and focus, finishing long. A fantastic Champagne. (1838 views)
Tasted by mjf@ulkner on 3/9/2014 & rated 93 points: Prominent fresh baked bread aroma. Oxidative style. Piercing minerality, very dry, crisp. Well balanced, with Granny Smith apple and ripe pear flavors on finish. Still young. Very distinctive unique wine. (1533 views)
Tasted by Atreyu on 9/7/2013 & rated 90 points: rich ripe spicy yellow apples. Elegant and refined, could have more complexity. Should improve with age. (1820 views)

Pinot Noir

Varietal character (Appellation America) | Varietal article (Wikipedia)
Pinot Noir is the Noble red grape of Burgundy, capable of ripening in a cooler climate, which Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot will not reliably do. It is unpredictable and difficult both to grow and to vinify, but results in some of the finest reds in the world. It is believed to have been selected from wild vines two thousand years ago. It is also used in the production of champagne. In fact, more Pinot Noir goes into Champagne than is used in all of the Cote d'Or! It is also grown in Alsace, Jura, Germany, the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Romania, Switzerland, Austria, Croatia, Serbia, Italy, and so forth, with varying degrees of success.

Pinot Noir is one of the world's most prestigious grapes. It is very difficult to grow and thrives well in France, especially in Champagne and Burgundy. Pinot Noir thrives less in hot areas, is picky on soil, and deserves some oak storage.

Pinot Noir, or Blauburgunder / Spätburgunder in German, is a blue grapevine - and, as the German name suggests, the grape comes originally from Burgundy in France.

The grape, which thrives in calcareous soils, is used primarily for the production of red wine, and it is widely regarded as producing some of the best wines in the world. The wine style is often medium-bodied with high fruit acidity and soft tannins. It can be quite peculiar in fragrance and taste, and not least in structure - which may be why it is referred to as "The Grapes Ballerina".
Pinot Noir is also an important ingredient in sparkling wines, not least in champagne since it is fruity, has good acidity and contains relatively little tannins.
The grape is considered quite demanding to grow. The class itself consists of tightly packed grapes, which makes it more sensitive to rot and other diseases.

Pinot Noir changes quite easily and is genetically unstable. It buds and matures early which results in it often being well ripened. Climate is important for this type of grape. It likes best in cool climates - in warm climates the wines can be relaxed and slightly pickled.
In cooler climates, the wine can get a hint of cabbage and wet leaves, while in slightly warmer regions we often find notes of red berries (cherries, strawberries, raspberries, currants), roses and slightly green notes when the wine is young. With age, more complex aromas of forest floor, fungi and meat emerge.

In Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Hungary, it often produces light wines with less character. However, it has produced very good results in California, Oregon and New Zealand.

With its soft tannins and delicate aroma, it is excellent for white fish, chicken and light meat. For the stored wines you can serve small game. Classic duck breast is a matter of course, a Boeuf Burgundy and Pinot Noir are pure happiness.

Pinot Noir loses quality by over-harvesting.
Pinot Noir is prone to diseases, especially rot and mildew. Viruses cause major problems especially in Burgundy.
Pinot Noir are large round grapes with thin skins. Relatively high in alcohol content. Medium rich tannins and good with acid.
As a young person, Pinot Noir has a distinctly fruity character such as raspberries, cherries and strawberries.
A mature Pinot Noir, the taste is different. Cherry goes into plum and prune flavors. It smells of rotten leaves, coffee, moist forest floor and animal wine. This must be experienced.
In warm climates you find boiled plum, some rustic, little acid.
If the grapes are over-grown, the wine will be thin, with little color and flavor.

France - When it comes to wine, France stands alone. No other country can beat it in terms of consistent quality and diversity. And while many of its Region, Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne most obviously, produce wine as rare, as sought-after and nearly as expensive as gold, there are just as many obscurities and values to be had from little known appellations throughout the country. To learn everything there is to know about French wine would take a lifetime. To understand and appreciate French wine, one only has to begin tasting them. Click for a list of bestselling items from all of France.
Sub-Region:

Champagne - The French region of Champagne (including the cities of Rheims, Épernay, and Aÿ) was the first region in the world to make sparkling wine in any quantity. Today, the name of the region is synonymous with the finest of all sparkling wines, and wine-making traditions of Champagne have become role models for sparkling wine producers, worldwide. Surprisingly, the region of Champagne is now responsible for only one bottle in 12 of all sparkling wine produced. Styles of champagne range in sweetness ranging from an extra brut or brut 0, to the basic brut to demi sec to doux; some houses produce single vintage champagnes and others produce non-vintage (or incorporate wines/grapes of multiple vintages), often to preserve a specific taste; combinations of grape varietals; and colors, including a rosé. There are several sub-appellations, including the Valley of the Marnes river running from Épernay west, Massif de Saint-Thierry north and west of Rheims, Valley of the Ardre, the Mountains of Rheims (between Rheims and Épernay), Côte des Blancs, Côte de Sézanne, and Côte des Bar in the South. Champagne wine only uses three grape varietals (cépages): Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier.
