Community Tasting Notes (average 89.4 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 35 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by El_Dougo on 12/30/2022 flawed bottle: Cork dried out and wine dried out too. Fruit gone. Vinegar left. Such is life. (558 views)
Tasted by WineCPA on 3/28/2016 & rated 90 points: Came across two more bottles at ta local retailer. Eucalyptus and fading red fruit. Consistent with my prior note. Definitely time to drink or I fear you will regret it. Still holding its ground from two years ago. (4004 views)
Tasted by augustwine on 1/24/2015: It's still drinking ok, but won't hold much longer. Tannins and oak are present. Not much fruit, but a round, balanced taste. (4472 views)
Tasted by Duderino on 10/25/2014: Done. (4712 views)
Tasted by WineCPA on 5/12/2014 & rated 89 points: Mature with hints of brick in the color. Dried fruit and unresolved tannins are present. Nose shows dried cherry and eucalyptus. If you enjoy a California Cab with age on it, go for it. But drink this one soon. I'm afraid the remaining fruit may fade by waiting much longer. (5143 views)
Tasted by ekenneth on 11/21/2012 & rated 90 points: Nice, mature old napa blend; a decent facsimile of a medium-aged bordeaux. (6242 views)
Tasted by ruth3 on 3/7/2012 & rated 95 points: At Sampler tasting, brick colour, cough mixture and strawberry nose, raisin, eucalyptus? soft tannins. Gorgeous. (4744 views)
Tasted by gblacave on 10/2/2011 & rated 91 points: Similar to my note from 5/19/2011. This is a delicious bottle of wine and was a steal for $20. (4395 views)
Tasted by ml1 on 7/2/2011 & rated 91 points: drinking very well right now. earthy, leathery, black fruits, spice and hint of raisin. sad to say this is my last bottle. (4183 views)
Tasted by gblacave on 5/19/2011 & rated 91 points: Pop and pour, this had been standing up for a week to settle and I wanted to follow it through its evolution. Upon opening the nose was somewhat reserved, showing a slight musty note with mushroom, forest floor and only hints of fruits. Within 10 minutes, the nose opened into a very nice bouquet of blackcurrant, dark berries, leather, and mineral-rich earth. It was soft, but had great presence and as the night went on it gained more complexity and weight, adding some red fruit notes and graphite to the nose. On the palate this was still young and fairly tannic. With a medium-bodied profile, but nice weight and depth of flavor. Despite the tannin, this had a velvety soft texture and a finish that lingered well. An outstanding bottle of wine that has room to improve and cries out for a nice steak. No hurry on this as it has plenty of life left. That said I am looking forward to my other 5! (3966 views)
Tasted by Xtriguy on 4/28/2011 & rated 89 points: Interesting nose of cigar box, tart berry, dark fruit, and a hint of eucalyptus. An early harsh "hot" note blew off. Cassis and grilled meat on the palate with a bit of a tangy finsih. Some grip still vibrantly present, leaving somewhat of a chalky finish. (3063 views)
Tasted by BillyT on 4/4/2010 & rated 89 points: Decanted for 2 hours. Color was medium translucent dark garnet. Despite the 14.1 it had modest legs and they didn't 'hang on' yet there was a distinct alcohol nose. Alcohol somewhat dominated so it was difficult to pick out the fruit. Dark berries with notes of vanilla, oak and eucalyptus but beyond that it was just not coming through some 3 1/2 to 4 hours in. On the palate were very nice integrated tannins with dark fruit going in and then suddenly the fruit fell flat and there was an acidic tanninic, spicy finish. If I knew better I would say this wine had peaked and was on the downside. There just wasn't much going on. I was concerned upon opening that there had been some possible oxidation going on since the cork was very loose and the color looked rather opaque and dark brownish so possibly this was a flawed bottle. I know it came from an impecable cellar so it had nothing to do with the storage. Let's see what happens tomorrow. (3759 views)
Tasted by ikkaariainen on 2/12/2010 & rated 91 points: Again really outstanding, enjoyed two nights ago with Kim at home with a dinner of grilled beef tenderloin tips. This is a great wine with big grilled meats. Big, bold, black, ever so good and smooth - a very typical mature Napa cab. This wine is in a great drinking window but really improves with a decant or time - the remnants were better the second evening. Overall tasting experience very similar to previous bottles - nose aromatic with stone fruit and dark cherry, primary flavors include well balanced oak, classic Napa cassis, dark stone fruit, tar and leather. Probably too expensive to be a real good QPR but we just really love this wine and highly recommend it. Plenty of fruit and tannic structure left for at least an additional 5 years of cellaring but this is drinking so well right now I am not sure it will further significantly improve - recommend starting drinking up any holdings.  Tasted by ToddR911 on 8/24/2009 & rated 85 points: Had my previous bottle about 8 months ago which was very good but this one is quite ordinary. I did bring it on a plane (checked baggage) so hopefully that did not ruin it, but excepting that it seems to be going downhill. Unfortunately I don't sense the fruit that I did on the last bottle. It is described as meant to be drunk young, so drink up! (4176 views)
Tasted by NiklasW on 8/23/2009 & rated 91 points: First CT meeting in Helsinki, Finland (Loli's place): My first real Cali Cab, and yes, it is really good! Very expressive with lots of cassis and oatmeal (yum!) on the nose. Very smooth tannins, lots of cassis, this is a big power wine, and I like it. Thanks to ikkaariainen for bringing it to our Helsinki CT meeting! 50+5+12+16+8=91 (4528 views)
Tasted by AllRed on 8/23/2009 & rated 91 points: Garnet color. Opens with a subtle meaty note, followed by cherries, herbs and roasted bell pepper aromas. Good depth to the fruit on the palate. Picks up a nice herbal quality on the finish. (3875 views)
Tasted by beezer6 on 3/27/2009 & rated 90 points: Dominus Vertical Tasting (Binny's South Loop - Chicago, IL): Medium light ruby. Some signs of age. Blue fruit. Plums and chocolate on the nose.
Palate shows medium blue fruit. Ripe blueberry, leather and a clean pure balanced finish. (5059 views)
Tasted by grrrpor on 3/17/2009 & rated 90 points: i think everyone nails it with the 90 points here. so very drinkable and smooth right now. pop and pour on a tuesday - not deep and dark and big, but everything is nicely integrated and it's drinking really well. (4279 views)
Tasted by ikkaariainen on 3/11/2009 & rated 90 points: An absolutely outstanding second label high-end CA Napa cab, good QPR and highly recommend this wine. Enjoyed with Kim over dinner at home with grilled tenderloin tips. Great surprisingly floral bouquet on the nose. Smooth with tannins well balanced, strong blackberry flavor with hint of cherry, cedar, blackberry, cassis and very good aftertaste. (4255 views)
Tasted by ToddR911 on 12/28/2008 & rated 90 points: Always good. Well structured. Balanced. Blackberry and cherries. Worth its $40 price point. Opened this bottle to celebrate that the Carolina Panthers got their win and the Bye for the playoffs. (4224 views)
Tasted by ikkaariainen on 12/25/2007 & rated 90 points: Excellent wine as always, drinking extremely well - great bouquet on the nose, smooth with tannins well controlled at this point of maturation, strong blackberry with hint of cherry flavors (4553 views)
Tasted by ToddR911 on 11/1/2007 & rated 88 points: Always good (4606 views)
Tasted by Porthos on 10/14/2007: Tasty, would purchase again. (4885 views)
Tasted by EyeDoc on 8/25/2007 & rated 88 points: solid second wine of Dominus (4178 views)
Tasted by jbshows on 7/16/2007 & rated 90 points: Ruby colored and very balanced. Fruit is on the decline, but it is still very nice right now. Drink 'em if you got 'em. (4204 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

Napanook Red

The Napanook Red Wine was first created in 1996. It is a 'second wine' to the main Dominus Estate wine. Confusingly, some mid-90's vintages of the Dominus Estate (1991 through 1996 we believe) were labeled as Napanook Vineyard, so people often try to create older vintages of this wine. None should exist before 1996.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
