Tasted by Combo on 2/12/2022 & rated 93 points: My last bottle - sadly. Opened an hour before pouring. Was concerned it might be on the back side of the curve but this bottle was fantastic. Has to be about peak right now. Still sufficient tannin to hold up to a grilled fillet mignon, but softened and smooth. Great expression of a big, juicy, Napa cab. Delightful and sad to say this was my last bottle of this vintage. (828 views)
Tasted by Combo on 12/19/2020 & rated 92 points: Opened an hour before pouring (did not decant). A bit tight at first at cellar temp but after 20 minutes in the glass and warming up a bit it opened up wonderfully. Nice, ripe dark cherry and blackberry fruit well balanced with leather and tobacco notes. Rich mouth feel, age-softened tannins, long savory finish. Drinking great right now, can’t imagine it getting much better. (1372 views)
Tasted by cayman andy on 12/26/2017 & rated 94 points: Drinking very well at the moment. (2852 views)
Tasted by aaronsoj on 6/14/2017 & rated 93 points: This bold cab continues to show deep color with some light garnet tones on the rim. The nose was dark fruit tones of raspberry, plum and maybe a hint of prune. The palate was dark fruit as well with plenty of tannic structure. The alcohol feels a little out of balance as there was considerable heat through the finish.

For some reason I don't love Alex Valley cab but this wine is alive and kicking and a good representation of the region.

Enjoy in good health! (3156 views)
Tasted by drdebs on 11/3/2016 & rated 92 points: Excellent cab, with cassis, plum, and eucalyptus notes. Fine grained tannins. Well balanced. Drinking perfectly now. (3622 views)
Tasted by NV ME on 6/23/2015 & rated 99 points: One of the best cabs I've ever had (4474 views)
Tasted by Doc90 on 1/19/2015 & rated 88 points: Dense and opaque red color. Lush raspberries, blackberries, and plum accompanied by a moderate amount of oak on the nose. Full bodied, rich raspberry palate with oak and currant undertones. This was good, but was begging for a juicy steak. Perhaps a little overpriced. (4353 views)
Tasted by Frank&Steph on 6/16/2014 & rated 90 points: très jeune encore, attendre facilement 5-6 ans (4138 views)
Tasted by Brett and Megan on 5/10/2014 & rated 91 points: cherry, plum, very long legs, smells a tiny bit hot, but not apparent in the taste (3243 views)
Tasted by ptmotr on 4/21/2014 & rated 90 points: Lovely mellow, smooth, well integrated cab. Still dark, no bricking at the edges yet. Not overly complex, but lovely flavours of dark fruit and earth. At this point with the manurity of the tannins and low acid wouldn't stand up to strong flavours like spicy barbecue, but was perfect with an aged cheese. (3146 views)
Tasted by Winiac on 11/23/2013 & rated 90 points: A bit low on acidity but still luscious wine with loads of blueberry and dark fruit. Has the delicious factor, it is a real crowd pleaser! (2550 views)
Tasted by jfurey21 on 11/7/2013 & rated 92 points: Wine is improving. Won WOTN last night. Very enjoyable. I would say it peaks starting next year and has about a 5 year optimal window after that.

This requires at an least hour decent. Vastly better after breathing. (2215 views)
Tasted by jfurey21 on 10/29/2012 & rated 91 points: Opened for Mimi's birthday. This was a very nice bottle of wine. Great tannins and nice fruit with earthy undertones too it. We decanted for an hour and drank with a nice rib eye. This is a nice offering from RS. The wine's finish was a just slightly tart and not overly long - so couldn't rate much higher. Some aging potential here - so it could improve over time. (3523 views)
Tasted by diane.forgy@dianeforgy.com on 5/18/2012 & rated 92 points: Bought a bottle in DC while on a business trip for $50 at a LWS. Popped and poured and it was ready to go. Tannins had grip but extremey well integrated. Perfect dark berry fruit, chocolate and smoke. Lush and full bodied. Would have been worth buying them out and shipping home at that price. (4177 views)
Tasted by ecola on 3/13/2012 & rated 94 points: An extraordinary bottle of wine. Bursting with black cherry and cassis. Full body with sweet gripping tannins. Tastes so good now, but will easily last for 15+ years. (4320 views)
Tasted by RussK on 9/15/2011 & rated 91 points: RUSSK Outer Limits Trade Tasting at Marriott HBeach. (4189 views)
Tasted by BigBoy_Sonoma on 8/28/2011 & rated 90 points: Minerality, and fine tobacco, hint of blackberry jam, smokey oak. Very earthy style. A- (4214 views)

Tom Klein

Proprietor

A fourth generation California farmer, Tom earned a business degree from Stanford and spent the first part of his career as a management consultant at the San Francisco office of the prestigious global management firm McKinsey & Company. One project during this time was evaluating a small winery in the Russian River Valley called Rodney Strong Vineyards and, in a chance meeting, he was introduced to founder Rod Strong and winemaker Rick Sayre. Already developing an interest in wine, this encounter planted a seed that would grow into a lifelong passion.

Rick Sayre

Head Winemaker

Rick began his winemaking career at the age of 19 as an assistant winemaker and cellar master at Simi Winery in Sonoma County. He had the opportunity to train under the world-renowned winemaster André Tchelistcheff, who instilled in his young trainee a deep passion for the art of winemaking and a desire to not only master his craft, but continually push the boundaries of creativity. “André taught me that a winemaker must live with his wine,” Rick recalls, “from walking the vineyards to the careful craft of guiding the wine into bottle. Even the smallest details can have a lasting effect.”

When Rod Strong decided to take a step back from the demanding role of winemaker, he called upon Rick Sayre, who joined the team at Rodney Strong Vineyards in 1979. In more than three decades in the cellars, Rick has guided the wine collection to include world-class Reserve, Symmetry and Single-Vineyard releases, an outstanding line of Estate wines and best-in-class Sonoma County wines that continue to please vintage after vintage. His voracious appetite for new winemaking knowledge has taken him around the world, including trips to the wine regions of France, Australia, New Zealand and Spain

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
