Tasted by ILarsen on 1/24/2023 & rated 91 points: The wine is now 16 years old an still drinking well - the fruit is mature dark cherries - menthol and leather - the wine is showing its age but still medium acidity and tannins and a good balance - happy to stay at 91. (349 views)
Tasted by ILarsen on 12/5/2020 & rated 91 points: This is the entry wine of Castell in Villa - and we all now that the lady of Castell in Villa produces her Chianti Classico riserva with very long aging potential - this entry wine is 13 years old and it is drinking very well - the fruit is dark cherries - you also get menthol and leather - medium acidity and tannins and a great balance. Happy to give well deserved 91 for at great entry wine. (706 views)
Tasted by ILarsen on 7/30/2016 & rated 91 points: I had this wine 2 years ago - and it is still great - just better - I wrote my rating will be higher next time and this is the case - read my last rating and add a bit extra because that is what you get from castelll'in villa - there wines can last for a very long time and they get better every time you taste them.  Tasted by ILarsen on 5/31/2014 & rated 90 points: cleary a good wine - powerful good nose - medium on acidity and tannins. The wine had opened up a good balance lots of pepper and lots of black cherries - good long aftertaste - this wine is clearly drinkable now but can still develop the next at least 5 years - I think my rating will be higher in a couple of years.  Tasted by Sheila62 on 1/2/2014: I normally love this producer but the ripe warm 2007 vintage bores me. Fruit is too ripe and everything is too forward..just simple and not to my palate

Wow retasted on 1/9/2014 and this wine now reveals it's great structure, minerality and acidity. For my palate these need to be held for years (2913 views)

Excellent CC. (2841 views)
Tasted by Karlaar on 3/10/2013 & rated 85 points: Has been one of my favorites. However, I found it more neutral than before. It might have been the setting (many powerful wines were drunk before this) or it might be that the wine is more closed now, than 6 months ago. Despite this - the wine is elegant and can easily be kept for another 4+ years. (2921 views)
Tasted by lessrof on 8/1/2012 & rated 89 points: Traditional well made CC. (2750 views)
Tasted by Karlaar on 7/28/2012 & rated 89 points: This wine is authentic. Deep red color, red berries on the nose. On the palate: Quite intense start, pepper and spice in good harmony with cherry fruit in the middle, long aftertaste. Nicely structured, can be kept for 5 plus years. Not the cheapest among the classicos, but certainly one of the best normales. (1873 views)
Tasted by Karlaar on 6/30/2012 & rated 88 points: A very reliable wine. Classic, clear fruit, long aftertaste. Can be stored for another 5-10 years. (1697 views)
Tasted by Karlaar on 5/18/2012 & rated 88 points: Described before. Very good and long lasting classic chianti. (1600 views)
Tasted by kfinsrud on 11/12/2011 flawed bottle: FLAW (1219 views)
Tasted by Karlaar on 9/3/2011 & rated 89 points: Color: Rather kind of light red, maybe pure red. Nose: Sweet berries, a hint of spice - very inviting.Palate: Smooth at the start, tannic, broad and intense in the middle clear cherry fruit, elegant after taste. A verry good wine that can be stored 5 years +. (1825 views)
Tasted by Karlaar on 6/28/2011 & rated 92 points: For me this is in the top 5 list of wines <$40. Cherries on the nose, some sweetness at first, nicely integrated tannins and a long aftertaste. Can be stored for another 5-6 years, but is very good now. (1872 views)
Tasted by Karlaar on 4/11/2011 & rated 89 points: A very good Chianti. Smell of sour cherries. Rich and powerful in the start, tannic and dry in the middle segment, long aftertaste. For me this is a perfect standard chianti classico. (1992 views)

Sangiovese

SANGIOVESE: (Pronounced "sahn-joh-vhe-se").
Sangiovese - Italy's claim to fame, the pride of Tuscany. Traditionally made, the wines are full of cherry fruit, earth, and cedar. It produces Chianti (Classico), Rosso di Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino, Rosso di Montepulciano, Montefalco Rosso, and many others. Sangiovese is also the backbone in many of the acclaimed, modern-styled "Super-Tuscans", where it is blended with Bordeaux varietals (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc) and typically aged in French oak barrels, resulting a wine primed for the international market in the style of a typical California cabernet: oaky, high-alcohol, and a ripe, jammy, fruit-forward profile.[16]

Semi-classic grape grown in the Tuscany region of Italy. Used to produce the Chianti and other Tuscan red wines. Has many clonal versions, two of which seem to predominate. The Sangiovese Grosso clone Brunello variety is used for the dark red, traditionally powerful and slow-maturing "Brunello di Montalcino" wine. The other is the Sangiovese Piccolo, also known under the historical synonym name Sangioveto, used for standard Chianti Classico DOC wines. Old vine derived wine is often used in the better versions, needing several years ageing to reach peak. A third clone, Morellino, is used in a popular wine blend with the same name found in the southern part of the province. Recent efforts in California with clones of this variety are very promising, producing medium-bodied reds with rich cherry or plumlike flavors and aromas. Among the available clonal versions are R6 and R7, derived from the Montalcino region of Italy, having average productivity/ripening and producing small berries on medium size clusters. R10 and R24 are well-recommended. R23, listed as deriving from the Emilia-Romagna region, has good vigor with medium-small clusters with earlier ripening. R102 derives from the Montepulciano region and reported to have average vigor with moderate productivity that results in higher sugar levels and good acidity from medium-small berries on medium-small clusters. Has synonym name of Nielluccio where grown in Corsica.
