Community Tasting Notes (average 88 pts. and median of 89 pts. in 9 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by timewithwine on 4/6/2019: A more international style than some of the other traditional Cornas on display this evening. A bit tight and needing to be decanted. Despite the tightness, it offers up violets, smoked meat and mineral. Not quite as satisfying as some of the other Corans (such as the Allemand). Very little sediment. 13% alc. For the first day of R&RR with beef daube and other goodies such as incredible blue cheeses. Recommended. (417 views)
Tasted by Nostromo99 on 7/5/2018 & rated 87 points: Slightly flat, uninteresting nose. Lacks concentration in the mouth. Still quite grippy on the shortish finish. Drinkable enough, but could do with a bit more going on. (885 views)
Tasted by timewithwine on 1/30/2015: The deep purple almost reminds you of a California Syrah, as does the scent of brown sugar on the nose. But with time, the violets, smoked meat and mineral speak of the old world. Heftier than the Chave St. Joe served along side it, and showing a much more international style than the Chave St. Joe also. This is much more novice friendly and doesn’t ask for food the way the Chave St. Joe does. The weighty mouthfeel coats the palate with flavors. The tannins are not yet resolved, but are not in any way angular or hard. Over time, this may well become a silky wine. Currently, no sediment. 13% alc. With cheeses (aged gouda, goat gouda, Edmont “Earthquake,” Italian truffle and others), black olives and crusty bread. For special day. Recommended, but with time, it may well be Highly Recommended.  Tasted by pjaines on 3/7/2013: Reasonably solid Cornas, although lacks a touch of energy and terroir. Veers more towards a Crozes Hermitage for me and lacks the nuance of its more serious Cornas neighbours. (2445 views)
Tasted by rossi.wine on 5/10/2012 & rated 89 points: The Jugged Hare, London. Very approachable now, excellent match with the roast we had. Balanced, fresh and rather long. (2096 views)
Tasted by pdxwineguy on 3/26/2012 & rated 89 points: Nicely balanced drinker right now. It might open with age but went very nicely with grilled onion salad and mild sausage. (1948 views)
Tasted by Bisty on 3/28/2011 & rated 89 points: Bottled only one week ago. Warm fruit, reminiscent of a more southern climate. Good acidity. (2275 views)

Syrah

Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.

Guide to the wines and appellations of the Northern Rhone Valley -

The Rhône Valley/Le Vins de la Vallée du Rhône (Comité Interprofession des vins AOC Côtes et vallée du Rhône)

Regional History:
Phocaean Greeks established viticulture in the Rhone as far back as 600 BC, but until the 14th century the wines were not seen outside the region. The establishment of the Avignonese Papacy (1305-1377) brought fame to the region's wine-so much so that their Burgundian neighbors to the north banned wines from the Rhone in 1446, a measure that effectively cut off trade with England and other Northern European markets for over 200 years. Stretching southward from Lyon to just south of Avignon, the Rhone produces a wide variety of wines, with the appellations north of Valence producing the least (in volume), and the towns south of Montelimar producing prodigious amounts. As in other regions, the most interesting wines come from small farms. Saint-Joseph, in the northern Rhone, extends for some distance between Condrieu in the north to Saint-Peray in the south. The reds are made from Syrah and the rare whites from Marsanne and Roussanne, and Viognier.
