Community Tasting Notes (average 91.1 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 79 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by wiscgrad on 10/29/2022 & rated 93 points: as others have noted, plenty of sediment so run thru a screen and a good decant helped as well. plenty of black pepper. dark and red fruit. nice nose as well. seems like plenty of life left (841 views)
Tasted by Grapetimescomin on 7/24/2021 & rated 93 points: Yum! Decanted for sediment then poured. Tasted fully mature. More earth forward than fruit forward with notes of pepper, meat, and blood. Dark fruits were present but tasted secondary to the earth flavors. Tannins were soft and integrated. Really good wine. There was half a glass left on day 2 which was thin and lost all its power. Would definitely drink up here. (1358 views)
Tasted by NY Wino on 4/12/2021 & rated 93 points: Nice nose, Excellent fruit, long tasty finish (1428 views)
Tasted by mac-eye on 4/8/2021 & rated 93 points: Very nice; a positive surprise. Seems to be at its peak or approaching - nowhere near the end of its window, which should go out to at least 2023. Lots of fine sediment; ran it twice through a Rabbit decanting screen to clear it out. If you don't screen and decant it might taste rough. This is a treat. Mature fruits still going strong, tannins very present yet fine and in balance, as is acid. No apparent sweetness but there may be some to taste the fruit. (1410 views)
Tasted by napasoutherner on 5/2/2020 & rated 91 points: Fun wine; had with fillets and haricots verts. Garnet color with some age on the rim of the wine. Nose of dark blue and red fruit, mint and baking spices. Had some grittiness on the finish, which was medium in length. Agree with other reviews there was lots of sediment so recommend a good decant. (1615 views)
Tasted by Bwalter17 on 4/26/2020 & rated 92 points: Dark red. Mint, blueberry and tobacco on nose. Viscous on palate, lots of sediment. Black pepper and wet leather on palate. So much sediment it is slightly chunky. Guess I should have decanted. Smooth otherwise. Medium length finish. Still has a few years left with tannins and powerful fruit. (1140 views)
Tasted by dbay on 3/8/2020 & rated 91 points: Deep purple. On the nose aromas of med + intensity- black cherries, jasmine, black tea, black plums, sandalwood, baking spices, and salami. On the palate the wine is dry with medium plus acidity, medium plus fine tannins, silky and ripe, medium plus alcohol, full body. The finish is long with black fruit, cloves, vanilla. The wine demonstrates length, intensity on the nose and the palate, and complexity with primary black fruit and floral aromas, secondary - spice, vanilla and toast and some tertiary meaty aromas. However, there is a bit of heat in the mouth, finish resulting in a lack of balance. Would drink now, probably at its peak or within the next 1-3 yrs. (833 views)
Tasted by OldHick95 on 8/9/2019 & rated 93 points: Dark purple in the glass. Floral aroma, a hint of candied fruit and a bit of alcohol burn. Taste is blueberry, cobbler, with a pleasant peppery note. Finish is smooth. This is a subtle wine at this point with great structure. Very nice by itself and held up to a range of food quite well. (992 views)
Tasted by Paul Lin on 6/1/2019 & rated 85 points: Displays a lot of richness for its age. Robust notes of black plums, fig paste, beef blood, and espresso roast. Dense and extracted on the palate, with a persistent, if somewhat tiresome, finish. Good for what it is, but I didn't want to drink more than glass of it. (1199 views)
Tasted by TashNYC on 5/4/2019 & rated 88 points: I was disappointed with this wine vs. my expectations and the hype. Some good fruit notes of blackberry, plum and smoke, but not as big or showy as I expected. Savory and with a certain restrained elegance. A good pairing with our buffalo strip steak, which brought out the flavors, but not a wow on its own.

Our experience diverges from the others here so we must not have a good bottle.

$26 at Winebid. Not great value, but other bottles might drink better. Drink now. (995 views)
Tasted by Bob in NC on 12/31/2018 & rated 92 points: While this DuMOL has more great years ahead of it, it was drinking wonderful tonight. We thought it's earthiness and tannins paired the best with Anita's enchiladas. (1149 views)
Tasted by drrobvino on 12/2/2018 & rated 90 points: Almost black in color, yet the viscosity does not stain the sides of the glass as I would have expected.
The nose shows off perfectly ripened plum and blueberry fruits, with bacon drippings and olive paste all poured over wet rocks.
There is also essence of smoke and embers in the upper register.
On the palate, full bodied and bold, the flavors present as tart plum skin, olive pit, barbeque, black pepper flakes, and espresso grounds.
The finish is bold and upfront, with well-rounded and chewy tannins, and medium acidity, but slightly clipped in length of flavors on the finish.
Drink now. Not a repurchase for me at $67 USD. (1066 views)
Tasted by andrewdodd86 on 1/5/2018 & rated 96 points: Sweet Jesus was this good. Total crowd pleaser packed full of dark blue/black fruit. Upon release these may be fruit bombs but wow are they good with some age. (1608 views)
Tasted by rustyRudy on 7/23/2017 & rated 94 points: Dark purple. Big nose of black fruit, grilled herbs, and baking spices. Rich and luscious , blueberries, blackberry cobbler, with tart berry and vanilla notes that wonderfully balance the fruit. Long and gorgeous finish. Drinking well now, but many good years ahead. (2152 views)
Tasted by wineotim on 3/21/2017 flawed bottle: Tart, tangy, too much acid...cork was pristine but this may have had some heat exposure, or just an off bottle. Very disappointed. (2786 views)
Tasted by mattdathan on 3/7/2017 & rated 94 points: Wonderfully smooth, integrated - lovely. Plenty of remaining structure to age. (2117 views)
Tasted by Bob in NC on 9/9/2016 & rated 90 points: Big, Bold and Blueberry...
A very masculine Syrah with rich blue fruit, spices, oak and smoked jamón. This wine needs food. Our charcoal grilled lamb was the perfect pairing for this aggressive beauty. Great finish. (2434 views)
Tasted by Redrum on 6/29/2016 & rated 95 points: This was outstanding. Intense concentration, almost syrupy, but somehow balanced out by tannin and structure. Superb. Ought to hold at this level for half a decade. (2056 views)
Tasted by pjhr on 5/19/2016 & rated 92 points: Delicious syrah! Cassis, blackberry and a hint of floral aromas and flavors on the palate with refreshing tannins on the finish. (1641 views)
Tasted by dbay on 3/30/2016 & rated 92 points: On the nose, salami and black plums, and intense ink. On the palette, full bodied smooth velvety mouthfeel with black plums, cinnamon and cloves. Long finish. (1641 views)
Tasted by plitton on 5/31/2015 & rated 90 points: Tasted along side a 2005 Dehlinger Syrah East Face. The Dumol was noticeably hotter with alcohol more prominent. Some bright fruit of raspberries and bing cherries. (2506 views)
Tasted by jshufelt on 4/5/2015 & rated 90 points: Decanted for an hour before service. Looking back on my previous tasting notes, it seems we've shifted from a fruit-driven profile to a more Rhone-like profile; lots of minerality and saline/blood notes. Still significant tannins on the finish. (2038 views)
Tasted by PinotPaul on 12/27/2014 & rated 91 points: Wonderful, simply wonderful. Enjoyed with Prime Rib. (2265 views)
Tasted by Bob in NC on 12/20/2014 & rated 94 points: Drank along side an '11 Booker Vertigo Syrah. This wine was the best with our smoked ribs with BBQ sauce. Had a thick chewy mouth feel with brooding darker fruit, big black pepper and a longer lingering finish. (2096 views)
Tasted by wpiers on 12/8/2014 & rated 92 points: Deeelish. Berry, dark cherry, luscious mouth feel. Very, very good (2175 views)

Syrah

Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
