Tasted by SchlaepDog on 3/17/2020 & rated 92 points: Oyster shells, lime zest, candle wax, honey, and spring flowers are pungent and precise.

Green apple, Barlett pears, and a honey note greet the palette first, then sweet lime and brisk acidity provides the kicker at the end. The texture is so creamy and finish medium long.

Great effort, drinking well at 10 years. Ready to go, but no rush as I detected no signs of oxidation or over the hill flavors. (640 views)
Tasted by RPerro on 3/19/2016 & rated 85 points: Not my thing, but for the varietal it was quite representative. Sweet lychee and apricot fruit, some interesting floral notes and a funkiness I couldn't put my finger on. From 375ml. (2078 views)
Tasted by wineismylife on 6/8/2015 & rated 90 points: WIML90

Tasted non blind.

Light yellow color in the glass, clear looking throughout. Nose of diesel and yellow pears. Flavors of lemon, yellow pears and Granny Smith apples. Medium acidity, medium body. Drink now. (2430 views)
Tasted by hackey37 on 6/3/2015 & rated 91 points: Clear light gold color and starbright intensity. The aromas are lime, sweet grapefruit, pear, and minerals. The tastes are lime, grapefruit, and floral notes. The finish is citrus tart and very long. Delicious! (2112 views)
Tasted by WaWineFan in TX on 3/6/2013 & rated 92 points: See previous. This is an outstanding wine in the $20.00 price range. Very tough to beat. (5035 views)
Tasted by W2WineGuy on 8/3/2012 & rated 90 points: Super good, similar to past comments, well worth the ticket for admission (5232 views)
Tasted by johnnyo on 7/22/2012 & rated 90 points: As always on of the best Washinton Riesling. (4159 views)
Tasted by fredman on 7/21/2012 & rated 88 points: More green apple than in last bottle. Less "tropical". Still very good. (3863 views)
Tasted by Firefly78 on 6/24/2012 & rated 89 points: Crisp and intense with a long, lingering finish. (2083 views)
Tasted by W2WineGuy on 6/21/2012 & rated 90 points: Incredible wine. Bright and refreshing, off dry with a lingering taste that holds from the acids. Lemon, lime, not bitter, very good drinker (2492 views)
Tasted by fredman on 6/14/2012 & rated 90 points: Just like sipping the tropics: honeysuckle, pineapple, peach, mango, various other wonderful nectar. along with some nice minerality. Very refreshing, with some viscosity. Drink or hold over the next 2-3 years. (2103 views)
Tasted by wahoo70 on 5/31/2012 & rated 90 points: Rich, juicy and beautifully balanced. Floral nose, with lime, pear and peach aromas; ever so slightly off dry, but with mouthwatering acidity for balance; rich orchard fruit flavors, with zippy limes, lemon zest and minerals; long tangy tinish, ending finally in pear peels. A wonderful new world riesling from Washington. (1835 views)
Tasted by beezer6 on 5/7/2012 & rated 91 points: Heritage Grand Wine Tasting (Ritz-Carlton - Chicago, IL): Crisp refreshing. A little petrol. Apple, really balanced. Touch of honeydew and white flowers. Solid bottling every vintage. (2772 views)
Tasted by WaWineFan in TX on 4/5/2012 & rated 92 points: Excellent! There is a reason this is my favorite WA riesling year after year. The Eroica is a close 2nd but for my money this remains unmatched for rieslings coming out of WA. Multiple layers, good acid, very food friendly, lightly chilled it is very hard to beat. The petrol tones which were a little offputting in my last bottle of the 07 was not nearly as pronounced here. (2243 views)
Tasted by RLP805 on 3/11/2012 & rated 88 points: A nice fresh light wine. Slightly effervescent almost clear in color. A hint of citrus and floral notes on the nose with grapefruit on the palate. A clean short finish. Little to no sense of alcohol. Served at cellar temp with a cheese plate of blue, gruyere and cheddar for which it paired nicely. (2025 views)
Tasted by garambler on 3/11/2012 & rated 91 points: Friends and I tasted this at the Woodinville tasting room on 3/11/12. It had a clean, fresh bouquet of pineapple, peach, kiwi and chalky mineral aromas. The palate had great acidity with a tiny bit of sweetness and flavors that followed the nose. (2073 views)
Tasted by bothellwineguy on 2/12/2012: Citrus and grapefruit, hint of kiwi. Long, dry lemon-lime finish. (2205 views)
Tasted by LelouchViBritannia on 2/4/2012 & rated 89 points: Freeload tour in Washington (Bellevue/Woodinville): sweet, lime, tart, not too petro-like, overall good. (2743 views)

Tasted by joraesque on 12/9/2011 & rated 87 points: I get butterscotch on the nose, lime and citrus on the palate; crisp and minerally, with good acidity that leaves your mouth watering; short finish. This is a very good dry Riesling that's a joy to drink. Serve slightly chilled. 87+ (2451 views)

Long Shadows Wineries Riesling Poet's Leap

Poet’s Leap and Armin Diel of Schlossgut Diel, Germany
Armin Diel joined the Long Shadows project in 2003 with his Poet’s Leap Riesling. Poet's Leap is fermented off-dry, offering flavors of freshly peeled grapefruit, appealing minerality and hints of ripe pears. Bright acidity gives the wine its vibrance, and a clean underlying touch of sweetness contributes to its engaging finish.

Armin Diel selects his grapes from a dramatic block of German clones in The Benches. Armin also works with a 1972 planting of Dionysus and fruit from the Yakima valley.

To maximize the grapes’ freshness and lively acidity, Armin asks the vineyard team to maintain an extensive canopy during the growing season. The fruit is hand-picked and whole-cluster-pressed. It is then fermented at cool temperatures in stainless steel tanks to capture the grapes' bright fruit character before selecting the best lots for the final blend.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

Washington

Washington Wine
Washington State is a premium wine producing region located in the northwest corner of the United States. Although a relatively young wine industry, it is now the nation's second largest wine producer and is ranked among the world's top wine regions. Washington wines are found nationally in all 50 states and internationally in more than 40 countries.

Wineries
With 30,000+ acres planted, the state has ideal geography and conditions for growing premium vinifera wine grapes. Primarily grown on their own root stocks, the vines produce grapes of consistent quality, resulting in strong vintages year after year. While its focus is on Chardonnay, Riesling, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah, the region also produces a wide range of other spectacular whites and reds.

Growers
Winemakers from all over the world have chosen to establish themselves in Washington, where they can create wines reflecting this region's unique characteristics. Their hand-crafted wines are receiving wide acclaim from critics regionally, nationally and internationally for their consistently high quality. Many of them have received scores of 90 and above from the major wine media. Overall this is a higher percentage than other leading wine regions.

Regions
As the state's fourth largest fruit crop, the Washington wine industry is an important contributor to the long-term preservation of Washington agriculture. The industry is committed to sustainable agricultural practices and conservation of water resources.

Varieties
Washington produces more than 20 wine grape varieties - a ratio of 56 percent white to 44 percent red. As the industry matures and experiments, it finds many grape varieties that thrive throughout Washington's microclimates. There are more than 16,000 vineyard acres of red wine varieties statewide.

History & Vintages
Washington's wine future is limitless. As consumers discover the quality of Washington wines, demand continues to grow nationally and internationally. New acreage and wine varietals are being planted and new wineries are opening at a remarkable pace. Washington State is recognized as a premium viticultural region around the world.

State Facts
Washington's wine industry generates more than $3 billion to the state economy. It employs more than 14,000 people, directly and indirectly, with projections to add nearly 2,000 more jobs by 2006. In terms of tax revenues accrued to the state and federal government, wine grapes are among the highest tax generators of any agricultural crops. Furthermore, Washington wine tourism attracts nearly two million visitors annually contributing to the positive growth of local and regional economies.
Washington State - the perfect climate for wine = ideal growing conditions, quality wines, business innovation, lifestyle, and social responsibility. All are key elements of this world-class wine industry.

Vintages
"2008 and even more so 2010 and 2011 were cool, even cold vintages (think: 2002 in the Barossa) without the extreme ripeness, extract and higher alcohol that had become the norm in the state’s post 1995 world. 2008 was manageable but the duo of 2010/2011 nearly caused a “great depression” in Washington State." - Jon Rimmerman

Columbia Valley

Columbia Cascade Winery Association

The Columbia Valley AVA lies mostly in Washington state, with a small section in Oregon. The Cascade Range forms its western boundary with the Palouse regions bordering the area to the east. To the north, the Okanogan National Forest forms a border with the AVA and Canada. It encompasses the valleys formed by the Columbia River and its tributaries, including the Walla Walla River, the Snake River, and the Yakima River. The Columbia valley stretches between the 46th parallel and 47th parallel which puts it in line with the well known French wine growing regions of Bordeaux and Burgundy. The northern latitude gives the areas two more hours of additional daylight during the summer growing season than wine regions of California receive. The volcanic and sandy loam soil of the valley offers good drainage and is poor in nutrients, ideal in forcing the vine to concentrate its resources into the grape clusters.
