Tasted by forceberry on 9/16/2014 & rated 89 points: A Tuscan Pinot Noir? Who would've thunk?

Translcuent charry red color. Surprisingly complex and serious nose with savory aromas of red cherries, leather, earthy sous-bois, some floral violet tones, a little bit of barnyard and manure and a hint of aromatic oak character. The wine feels medium-bodied, savory and surprisingly crisp on the palate with high acidity, yet the overall feeling is quite rich and mellow, thanks to the bottle age. There are complex and even a bit wild flavors of tart lingonberries and cranberries, pronounced peppery spice, some savory woody notes, a little bit of barnyardy funk and a hint of cherry. Overall the wine feels surprisingly tightly-knit, not just because of its high acidity, but also because of its surprisingly ample and grippy tannins as well. The finish is dry, savory and moderately grippy with long flavors of earthy Pinosity, peppery spice, sour cherry bitterness, some black raspberries, a little bit of toasty oak and a hint of leather.

A surprisingly stern, big and tannic Pinot Noir - not exactly what you'd look for when opening a bottle of Pinot. Nevertheless, this is a surprisingly good, balanced and serious for a Tuscan red wine with very nice, bright and crunchy acidity. This really might not be that Pinot Noir in style, but at least it is seriously structured and not overripe nor drenched in new oak. The wine is still quite firm and even somewhat youthful for a Pinot Noir at 8 years of age - most likely thanks to the spectacular vintage of 2006 - so I would not hurry with this one. There's still a lot of room for further development. Good for now, most likely will get better with age. (1877 views)
