Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 91.2 pts. and median of 91 pts. in 17 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by OttawaB on 6/9/2020 & rated 92 points: Granite in colour. Drinking really well now. Beautiful soft aromas of cassis, dark berries, forest floor, tobacco, old leather. The aromas are subtle and gentle.
Flavours repeat. Lots of secondary and tertiary flavours moving in now. Drying powdery smooth tannins. Medium length finish. Good overall balance. (1882 views)
Tasted by StefanAkiko on 11/27/2019 & rated 94 points: Paris - Stockholm - Umeå - Tokyo in 6 days; 11/26/2019-12/1/2019 (World): Best wine of the flight.
My guess: a mid-90'ies St Emilion.
Super performing for what it should be. (That's what I love about blind tastings!)
Could not possibly guess 2003 as this was such a balanced and well-built wine. A lean athlete. Nothing plump at all.
Will live long!

As far as BDX goes, this is reasonable QPR. (2483 views)
Tasted by Zweder on 12/15/2016 & rated 92 points: Monthly tasting club "The Tasting Club" 2016-?; Bordeaux 2003 and 2004 (@ My place): Beautiful bouquet with cassis and other dark forest fruits and luxurious oaky flavors. On the palate dark berries, graphite, good acidity and tannin. A beautiful and harmonious wine. Ready now and for another 4+ years. (4722 views)
Tasted by olracx62 on 12/21/2015 & rated 91 points: At Cantine Isola's in Milan. Wonderful nose of earth and oak, mouth of wood and bush with some graphite. Medium finish. A very pleasant taste before BIMI Christmas Party. (4879 views)
Tasted by Rani on 1/24/2013 & rated 90 points: Cigar box, blackberry and herbs. A bit of barnyard too, earthy/muddy on the palate with slightly bitter tannins. Nice. (6881 views)
Tasted by Stefanos T. on 3/28/2012 & rated 91 points: Garnet colored wine with nose of medium intensity showing aromas of cedar, tobacco, tar along with some cassis and lactic notes. In the palate the fruit is more evident and riper than on the nose, with plummy nuances along the cedary, tobbaco leaf, earthy, mineral and bitter chocolate notes. A nice mature wine with good acidity balancing ripe but fresh (for the vintage) fruit, slightly astringent tannins but unmistakably Pessac-Leognan in flavor and quite long on the finish. (6526 views)
Tasted by michaelredhill@gmail.com on 6/21/2011 & rated 89 points: Dark ruby and garnet in the glass with a nose of black cherry. Somewhat watery and fugitive on the tongue, but solidly drinkable. Not an overly impressive wine or vintage. (7003 views)
Tasted by Wrighty on 1/20/2009: Started closed even though it was decanted for an hour. Opened up with some tobacco and woody herby blackcurrant. However alcohol and varnish became more prominent as the wine opened and took away from the high point mid evening. (5106 views)
Tasted by newbiewine on 10/7/2008 & rated 93 points: Color: Dark Ruby Blood Red. Short thin wine legs.
Scent: Amazing Herbs. Soy Sauce. Little sweet fruit.
Taste:
First - None
Mid Palate - Spicy, Oaky, Salty Soy Sauce, Semi Bitterish, tabacco, tar, green.
After - Vanilla, Salty Sweet Blackcurrent.Tar finish. No ripe berries aftertaste, although semi long, 60-120 seconds. (4744 views)
Tasted by vinole on 2/3/2007 & rated 89 points: 2003 Bordeaux Tasting at Wine Watch (Ft. Lauderdale, FL): Bottle was opened the previous evening in preparation for a retail tasting. This wine is medium bodied and softer and more accessiible than the other Pessac-Leognan. (5071 views)

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman
