Tasted by Mike Kopanski on 1/26/2013 & rated 86 points: Giant Wine Sale & Tasting Cellar on Greene 1/26/2013 (Cellar on Greene, Columbia, SC): When I first tasted this wine, I was unaware it was produced in California. I thought it was somewhat light in viscosity, but tasty. When I realized it was a New World wine, and my first taste of this varietal outside of Spain, I got pretty excited. Though not a spectacular wine, there is lots to admire. The nose has a nice combination of green garden vegetative aromas, with spicy, tangy, citrus, especially tangerine. The fruit across the palate is fairly light and dry in style, citrus, melon and guava. Nicely balanced with moderate yet refreshing acidity. Fairly short finish. (4518 views)
Tasted by ecola on 8/29/2012 & rated 88 points: Melon flavors with a little lemon lime. Has some acidity, but not as much as the Spanish versions. Crisp finish. (4373 views)
Tasted by jwells on 7/4/2012 & rated 88 points: Straw yellow. Strong fruit up front with nectarine and peach prominent. Medium finish. (2489 views)
Tasted by lushlife on 6/10/2012 & rated 88 points: bright fruit, a touch of pineapple on the nose, medium body with nice acidity. (2525 views)
Tasted by yorknh on 6/5/2012 & rated 86 points: Pale gold color. Tart green apples, but not too tart. Generally an easy drinking white that should be served chilled, but not cold. (3050 views)
Tasted by spmulligan on 3/2/2012 & rated 82 points: Floral nose with just a bit of green melon; grapefruit and melon on the palate; medium good (3154 views)
Tasted by rrschrumjr on 2/26/2012 & rated 88 points: Full, floral nose, with tart green apple, and some citrus fruits. On the palate, spicy, crisp grapefruit, limes, a tad waxy. Lingering finish, nice acidity. Very refreshing. Would probably feature best as an aperitif, absent food. (3143 views)
Tasted by rjonwine@gmail.com on 2/4/2012 & rated 88 points: 2012 - 8th Annual The Golden Glass: Slow Food Wine & Food Tasting Event (Herbst Pavillion, Fort Mason, San Francisco, California): Light yellow color; tart green apple nose; tart green apple, citrus palate; medium-plus finish (2278 views)
Tasted by ctbob on 1/29/2012: Tasted alongside the '08, and I preferred this one -- livelier, crisper; both were delightful (970 views)
Tasted by rjonwine@gmail.com on 9/17/2011 & rated 87 points: Light yellow color; focused, tart pear, tart peach nose; tart peach, apple skin, mineral palate; medium finish 87+ points (605 views)
Tasted by Tim221 on 6/3/2011 & rated 90 points: I recognize that everyone has different tastes and so on, but this is a FANTASTIC white wine! It is a light golden color in the glass, with a mild bouquet of lime and floral notes. The taste has an initial tartness, not too strong, followed by a grapefruit flavor and a light, almost sweet aftertaste providing a superb balance on the palate. Goes very well with salad, fish, or sipping on the deck on a quiet evening. If you are hardcore on Chardonnays this wine may not be what you're used to, but if you prefer Sauvignon Blancs or Pinot Gris you will likely really like this wine! I would go out of my way to buy this wine again. (1836 views)

Albariño

Varietal character (Appellation America)

Albariño (Galician pronunciation: [albaˈɾiːɲo]) or Alvarinho (Portuguese: [alvaˈɾiːɲo]) is a variety of white wine grape grown in Galicia (northwest Spain) and Monção (northwest Portugal), where it is used to make varietal white wines.

Albariño is actually the Galician name for the grape, with Albarín Blanco an occasional synonym. In Portugal it is known as Alvarinho, and sometimes as Cainho Branco. [1]

It was presumably brought to Iberia by Cluny monks in the twelfth century. Its name "Alba-Riño" means "the white from Rhine" and it has locally been thought to be a Riesling clone originating from the Alsace region of France, although earliest known records of Riesling as a grape variety date from the 15th, rather than the 12th, century. It is also theorized that the grape is a close relative of the French grape Petit Manseng. [2]

It should not be confused with the Alvarinho Liláz grape of Madeira.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
