Tasted by B&PBaker on 5/20/2018 & rated 86 points: Average all the way through. No flair like I was expecting. (1089 views)
Tasted by Ceo on 2/7/2016 & rated 92 points: Still rocking (1929 views)
Tasted by jeffreylubowski on 11/29/2015 & rated 91 points: I usually think petite sirah has a very important role to play in the vineyard - plant it on the edges and let the birds and deer have at it so we don't have to drink it. But this one is special - there is no alcoholic heat nor is it clunky or flabby. It has acid, it has acceptable tannins, and the alcohol can't be felt. It is fruity but it doesn't smack you upside the head. Blackberry Licorice violets. The nose is an incredible perfume. Probably the best PS I've had. Drink up. (2426 views)
Tasted by montepulciano man on 10/23/2015 & rated 90 points: This is the 3rd bottle I've had.... last one before this was about 6 months ago. tasty but I think it's not getting any better at this point - will hold where it is for a while though. I was getting a lot more French oak then I recall in the past, which I would have like dialed back. Alcohol heat has really dissipated (2039 views)
Tasted by jeffreymmckay on 7/1/2015 & rated 94 points: Decanted and enjoyed over a 1.5-hour dinner at L'Abattoir in Vacouver, BC. Paired with chicken skins and snails, veal tongue & sweetbreads, and tendersirloin. Wow!!! Hot alcohol and blackberries in the nose, mineralized black cherries in the middle, med long finish with notes of toasted vanilla cherry and spice. (2375 views)
Tasted by westcoastwannabe on 5/14/2015 & rated 88 points: Notes consistent with previous entry. (1549 views)

Tasted by KVM on 6/17/2014: Ink-like. Dark berry fruit and vanilla. This is very concentrated with dark fruit, vanilla. It has texture but avoids heaviness. Good for roasted meat and BBQ. Good today. (1405 views)
Tasted by westcoastwannabe on 11/23/2013 & rated 88 points: Not overly complex, but still full of fruit. Nice lasting finish. (1842 views)
Tasted by Dono1212 on 7/26/2013 & rated 89 points: Kathy: love the deep dark purple color. Rich and very smooth, with a dominant berry nose & touch of cherry: 89

Tasted by Ceo on 2/10/2013 & rated 92 points: This is a beautiful wine. (2730 views)
Tasted by noahbw on 10/5/2012 & rated 91 points: 3 hours in decanter. Thick dark purple in the glass. Nose or dark ripe fruit, smokey black pepper, leather, spices, caramelized sugar, dusty wood, branches and bark. Palate is broad yet full of concentrated black berry and pronounced tannin that sings. Jammy notes give way to chocolate and an earthy, herbal and concentrated fruit finish that lingers so nicely. PJG: 91 (3406 views)
Tasted by WI WineLover on 8/31/2012 & rated 93 points: Really nice petite...popped and poured - 30 minutes later: voila! (3013 views)
Tasted by cbbrown3 on 8/24/2012 & rated 91 points: This was decanted for about an hour. The wine is a deep, dark purple color. There are blackberries, black pepper, smoke, licorice, dark chocolate, dried herbs, underbrush, and some earthiness on the dark and pleasing nose. This is medium to full body with fairly solid, ripe tannins and very nice acidity. There is a lot of fruit and spice on the palate with just a bit of earthiness coming in on the back end with dark chocolate and black pepper. Nice length on the finish where the dark chocolate really kicks into high gear. This is very young but already very nice. (2667 views)
Tasted by Ceo on 5/31/2012 & rated 94 points: This wine is showing well after a venturi and decant. It is young but it will be even better in a few years. Hard to beat Girard P.S.!! (2631 views)

Petite Sirah

Varietal character (Appellation America) | P.S. I Love You: A Petite Sirah Advocacy Organization

Petite Sirah is a variety of red wine grape grown in France, California, Israel and Australia. Recently, wineries located in Washington State's Yakima Valley, Maryland, Arizona, West Virginia, Mexico, Chile's Colchagua Valley and Maipo Valley, and Ontario's Niagara Peninsula have also produced wines from Petite Sirah grapes. Though developed in France, it is nearly extinct there as of 2002, hanging on in limited plantings in the Isère and Ardêche regions of the Rhône Valley and in Palette, a tiny appellation in Provence. It is the main grape known in the US and Israel as Petite Sirah with over 90% of the California plantings labeled "Petite Sirah" being Durif grapes; the US Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms recognizes "Durif" and "Petite Sirah" as interchangeable synonyms referring to the same grape. The grape originated as a cross of Syrah pollen germinating a Peloursin plant. On some occasions, Peloursin and Syrah vines may be called Petite Sirah, usually because the varieties are extremely difficult to distinguish in old age.

The 'petite' in the name of this grape refers to the size of its berries and not the vine, which is particularly vigorous. The leaves are large with a bright green upper surface and paler green lower surface. The grape forms tightly packed clusters that can be susceptible to rotting in rainy environments. The small berries creates a high skin to juice ratio which can produce very tannic wines if the juice goes through an extended maceration period. In the presence of new oak barrels the wine can develop an aroma of melted chocolate.

Petite Sirah produces dark, inky colored wines that are relatively acidic with firm texture and mouth feel. The bouquet has herbal and black pepper overtones, with plum and blackberry flavors on the palate. Compared to Syrah, the wine is noticeably more dark and purplish in color. The wines are very tannic with aging ability that can eclipse 20 years in the bottle.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
