Tasted by Chris Jephcott on 11/27/2021 & rated 92 points: I’ve kept onto this for a good few years.

Love a good Chateauneuf Du Pape

N: plum, cherry, fig, raisin, tobacco and graphite

T: smooth, powerful wine. Plum, dark fruit, tobacco, leather, a hint of blue cheese. Fades to raisins and spice. A lovely warning winter wine.

Consumed with cheese and biscuits. A perfect match. (484 views)
Tasted by theRealPepe on 7/21/2020 & rated 92 points: I picked this up inexpensively back in the day, and always found it a bit clipped until now. What an appropriate name though. The wine has enough olives to rival any northern Rhône! This, despite being 80% Grenache, 10% Cinsault and only 10% Syrah! Olive, plum and Kirsch on the nose. Olive, game and just-ripe dark fruit on the palate. Excellent. (803 views)
Tasted by bergkamp10 on 11/9/2019 & rated 89 points: Very god mature CDP, drinking well at the moment. Ripe Raspberry, black fruits earth and spice on the nose. Quite inky in the glass, ripe dark berry with some spice garrigue and kirsch. Clean slightly sweetish finish with well resolved tannins and a hint of pepper. Overall, pretty good. Lacks a bit of depth and complexity, but holding up ok and very nice with tri-tip. (914 views)
Tasted by NDLanoue on 6/16/2019 & rated 86 points: 15JUN19 at Bacchus Wijnfestival: Medium+ ruby color; found this to be a bit light, medium- body, with mild tannins; supple mouthfeel with notes of cranberry, dark plum, and just a touch of stone/graphite on the finish; perhaps the bottle at the festival had been open too long, but I found this to be a bit simple and on the thin side; for advertised 24 EUR/bottle this would be a good deal, assuming you're not looking for an in-your-face wine for pairing (1056 views)
Tasted by theRealPepe on 12/17/2016 & rated 90 points: Dark red with just a touch of bricking. Aromas on night 1 of tapenade and kirsch. Night 2 is barnyard, olive and red berry. Palate has more olive, kirsch, red berry, earth and a mild acid streak. This paired well with night 1's lamb steak and Brussels sprouts, and surprisingly well with a squash, leek and potato soup on night 2. Of the 3 bottles of this I have drunk it is the first to have a suggestion of its olive namesake. It was actually surprising, given the cepage of 80% Grenache, 10% cinsault, and just 10% Syrah. Excellent. (2192 views)
Tasted by Uglypinga on 7/8/2015: Very savory nose wet leather, dried meat. The palate is also savory with some mild meats but a nice underripe blackberry note in the back end that does not last very long. Decent wine. (2701 views)
Tasted by theRealPepe on 9/3/2014: As I prepared to enter this note saw my previous one from last year and chuckled - it's very similar! Spicy, savoury cherry aromas and cherry, spice and pepper on the palate. Perhaps a bit short and dry on the finish but a nice overall package. Still no idea where this will be in 2020 or so, but right now Excellent. (3009 views)
Tasted by sleepyhaus on 1/2/2014: Lo and behold: a CDP that doesn't suck. Okay, this does flirt with being over the top but manages to stay on the right side of the line. You can feel the alcohol after a glass but don't taste it while drinking, so that is a plus. Good complexity without veering too far into medicinal. Hardly traditional, but well made nonetheless. At the price paid a very good deal and one that is sure to please many, especially for one glass, as it becomes a bit heavier handed after that. (3576 views)
Tasted by theRealPepe on 10/30/2013: This everything you want in a*basic* CDP. Gorgeous savory aroma and good meaty, spicy (garriguey?) palate with interesting finish. Lovely drink at present but have no idea how it will age. Right now - Excellent. (3656 views)
Tasted by RickyT12 on 9/24/2013 & rated 93 points: Dark chocolate, black berry jam and raspberry nose. Very delicious. Little bread type hints on the nose. Some gaminess hints of salt Great raspberry and blackberry flavors and nose. Much more fruit than meat. Big fan would love to try again. (2470 views)
Tasted by SonnyChiba on 9/24/2013 & rated 92 points: 91-92pts. Very nice Chateauneuf du pape. Immediately picked up a lot of white pepper followed by venison/jerky on the nose, wrapped in some crushed berries. Soil, smokey, then followed by underlining dark chocolate and raspberry, with some more of that spice mixed in on the finish. Very beautiful creamy texture and finish. A rich wine, good balance of new/old world style. Big fan of this one. (2889 views)
Tasted by Average Wine Guy (MH) on 8/25/2013 & rated 88 points: The 2010 Roger Sabon Châteauneuf-du-Pape Les Olivets is medium purple in colour with a charming nose of slight saltiness and dustiness alongside green olives, leafiness and dark cherries.

On the palate, an entry with slight saltiness and purple currants with green flavours coming up towards the end. Medium finish, quite a basic entry level Roger Sabon CDP with a decent value. (1536 views)

Roger Sabon

Producer website - Read more about Roger Sabon

The Sabon family has a long history in Chateauneuf du Pape. Quote from the homepage of the domain: "One of the oldest documented landholders in Chateauneuf du Pape, the Sabon family has controlled vineyards in the zone since 1540".
Roger Sabon is the father of the three brothers who run the domain today Jean-Jacques, Denis and Gilbert Sabon.
The vinification is since 2001 in the care of Didier Négron, son-in-law of Jean- Jacques Sabon.
Denis and his son Julien take care of the fields. Delphine, daughter of Denis is often in the reception.

Today the property has 15 ha. in AOC Chateauneuf du Pape and owns 17 ha. of vineyards in Roquemaure from where Lirac and Cotes du Rhone are made.

Red Rhone Blend

Read about the different grapes used to produce red and white Rhone wines
On CellarTracker, Red Rhone Blend is the term for a wine consisting of two or more of the traditional 13 Southern Rhone grape varieties. Typically it's the Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre or Cinsault grapes, but can also contain the Muscardin, Counoise, Clairette, Bourboulenc, Picpoul, Roussanne, Terret Noir, Picardan or Vaccarese grapes.

A 'food' wine. Lacking pretension and intended for local consumption with local cuisine. Lacks the 'high' notes on a Bordeaux, more earthy and sharper so often a better partner to meat dishes with a sauce.

"As I have written many times in the past, the sweet spot for drinking Châteauneuf du Papes is usually the first 5-6 years after the vintage. Then they seem to go through an adolescent, awkward, and sometimes dormant stage, only to re-emerge around year 10-12, where the majority of wines are often fully mature. The best of them will continue to hold on to life (but rarely improving) beyond 15-20 years. It is only the exceptional Châteauneuf du Papes that will evolve for 20-25+ years, and those are indeed a rarity. However, things may be improving dramatically in terms of the longevity of Châteauneuf du Pape, although Grenache-dominated wines, the vast majority of wines produced in the appellation, are wines that do not have the polyphenol (extract and tannin) content of top Cabernet Sauvignons, Merlots, or Syrah-based wines. Nevertheless, the younger generation in Châteauneuf du Pape has taken seriously the farming in the vineyards. There are more organic and biodynamically run vineyards here than in any other appellation of France. The yields, which were already low, are even lower today (20-35 hectoliters per hectare), and of course, the proliferation of top luxury and/or old-vine cuvées gives a significant boost to the number of wines that will evolve past 25 or 30 years. The advantage of these wines is their broad window of drinkability." - Robert Parker
