Tasted by yurcek on 6/21/2020 & rated 89 points: I was pleasantly surprised with this wine since I was 3 years past the drinking window. Bright Cherry color. I noticed the effervescence when I decanted it and on drinking it showed that on the tongue. Medium bodied on the tongue. Less than 1 tsp of sediment with this 2009 vintage. Wish I had another bottle. Purchased from WTSO in January 2013. Held up well in the cellar. (558 views)
Tasted by CieloVista on 7/11/2014 & rated 88 points: ...similar to the last bottle. (4993 views)
Tasted by 1H2oMan on 8/24/2013 & rated 91 points: Decanted for 3 hours it made a big difference. Great wine tonight (6445 views)
Tasted by CieloVista on 7/6/2013 & rated 88 points: This was much better than my previous bottle. I allowed it to open up over a few hours. The oak and red fruit was more integrated. The finish was medium and clean but with richer levels of raspberries and cherries. (6927 views)
Tasted by Ecoenophile on 6/21/2013 & rated 89 points: Solid red blend. Nothing outstanding about it... but no rough edges either. Purple fruit and some coffee on the nose. Blueberry, blackberrt and a little spice on the palate. Smoth finish... not much of a tannin backbone. I'd be drinking these now. (6958 views)
Tasted by df1962 on 3/12/2013 & rated 90 points: PnVnD let air for 1 hour. Consistent with previous note. Great nose of black fruits with a touch of earth and oak. Flavors nice balance of Bordeaux and California. Lingering blackcurrant pastille and tobacco. Great rich mouthfeel. (7935 views)
Tasted by df1962 on 2/14/2013 & rated 90 points: Decanted half the bottle through Vinturri and let air for 2hrs. Bright garnet/claret color with slightly brickish rim. Cassis and slightly pruny nose with a touch of tobacco. Medium weight with velvety tannin. Nicely ripe cassis plum and macerated cherry flavors with a touch of herb at the end. Drink up. (4211 views)
Tasted by 1H2oMan on 1/30/2013 & rated 90 points: Love this wine (3159 views)
Tasted by df1962 on 1/17/2013 & rated 90 points: PnVnD let air for 2hrs. Consistent with previous notes with more integration and smoother tannins. (2996 views)
Tasted by CieloVista on 12/19/2012 & rated 87 points: Dark Ruby red with cranberry aromas. Tastes of red fruit, medium smoothness, tannins and finish...typical Napa Cab - nothing special. (3655 views)
Tasted by thalver on 3/10/2012: meh....previous tasting note pretty much sums it up. A bit of bottle age has...well, made the disparate elements more harmoniously disparate (6327 views)
Tasted by DesMarteau on 12/29/2011 & rated 86 points: The 2005 Haven's Bourriquot I had was something special....very Bourdeaux like....restrained and yet powerful. This is nothing like that...really just a decent Napa cab blend in a bottle with the Havens name...not to mention half the price. A good $10 napa cab. Blueberries and vanilla...very fruit forward, approachable, no tannins...soft fruit mush that isn't a bad drink. (6330 views)
Tasted by Steve2262 on 12/28/2011 & rated 92 points: Real smooth, lots of fruit. It really imporves after 2 hours. me and my buddies really enjoyed it. (6368 views)
Tasted by thalver on 11/22/2011: meh....The disingenuous back label raised raised red flags with its implications that this was from the original Havens winery. It could have talked about continuing the Havens tradition, but instead it clearly implies that the winery had been in continuous production. Slimy. The wine inside tastes like generic negociant plonk. No apparent Rutherford signature. On the nose: Oak, then hints of fruit, and oak again dominant on the "finish". If, as advertised, Aaron Potts is associated with this wine I'd like to know in what way. Did he bless the tanker full of bulk juice as it rolled past his office? In fairness, it did get a smidge better after a few hours in a decanter. For those that believe in travel shock, it was opened the day it arrived. Score withheld until it has laid down for a bit. (6681 views)
Tasted by df1962 on 11/6/2011 & rated 89 points: PnVnD let air or 4hrs. Very claret color not saturated with crimson rim. Red currant cranberry and black currant aroma with a touch of rosemary and sage. Medium(-) weight with black tea tannins. Red fruits on the palate with a bit of plum and cassis, herbal elemants and black tea. Blind you would think Bordeaux not Napa which is a bit of a Havens hallmark still would like a little more black fruit. Really improved over the course of the evening. Will give it at least a year before trying again. (6114 views)

Havens Wine Cellars

Producer website

The original Havens winery was liquidated in 2009. Many of the wine assets were sold with some being released by Cameron Hughes. In 2012, the physical winery itself was acquired and the brand revived.

Red Bordeaux Blend

Red Bordeaux is generally made from a blend of grapes. Permitted grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and rarely Carménère.Today Carménère is rarely used, with Château Clerc Milon, a fifth growth Bordeaux, being one of the few to still retain Carménère vines. As of July 2019, Bordeaux wineries authorized the use of four new red grapes to combat temperature increases in Bordeaux. These newly approved grapes are Marselan, Touriga Nacional, Castets, and Arinarnoa.

Wineries all over the world aspire to making wines in a Bordeaux style. In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify wines made in this way. Although most Meritage wines come from California, there are members of the Meritage Association in 18 states and five other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Canada, Israel, and Mexico.

The Meritage Association

What Is Meritage?
In 1988, a group of American vintners formed The Meritage Association to identify hand-crafted wines blended from the traditional "noble" Bordeaux varietals including: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot and Malbec or Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, and Sauvignon Vert."Meritage," pronounced like "heritage," was selected from more than 6,000 entries in an international contest to name the new wine category. Meritage is an invented word that combines "merit" and "heritage" - reflecting the spirit of members of The Meritage Association. Meritage® is a registered trademark of The Meritage Association. USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
