Community Tasting Notes (average 90 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 523 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by brigcampbell on 4/7/2024: Last bottle. Starting to show it's age by fading color. Slightly brown hue around the edges. Nose is bright fruit. The fruit is fading on the palate, not sure this will last another 5 years without losing more. Nice sandalwood and rawhide flavors. (1420 views)
Tasted by m.lupus on 4/7/2024 & rated 92 points: I think this vintage has come around very nicely by now and delivers great value (for the money paid at the time). Not the most complex wine, but just really yummy. (1335 views)
Tasted by Bordeaux_Jon on 3/29/2024 & rated 89 points: Underwhelming. I heard all the Cru Riservas were declassified in 2010 but they did not elevate this wine. Simple but an easy drink. This does not set serve the 90 points that a “fine wine” earns. (1678 views)
Tasted by Jerrywine on 3/19/2024 & rated 91 points: Very enjoyable wine with flowers, cherries and some dark fruits and earthy notes. Very smooth from start to long finish. (2062 views)
Tasted by Nutty08 on 3/14/2024 & rated 92 points: Showing some maturity with some dried fruits lovely elegantly on the nose. Doesn’t have the intensity and power of some years. In a good spot. Has softened from my last bottle. (2045 views)
Tasted by MLipton on 3/13/2024: Impatience will be my fatal flaw: I couldn’t keep my hands off my last bottle. Consumed tonight with an ersatz pasta dish of pomodoro puttanesca with Aidell’s garlic-artichoke smoked chicken sausage, peppers and onions, it was in fine form. Not the most complex Nebbiolo but an immensely satisfying one. (1857 views)
Tasted by asgerG on 3/5/2024 & rated 89 points: DnP
Really fine Nebbiolo. Elegant and tannins on retreat, dried roses, red fruits, tar, mT, h-A, mB, dry.
Drink now - 2030 (2009 views)
Tasted by xwine on 2/17/2024: Double decanted about an hour before starting on it. Very little sediment to speak of (it's filtered, but still threw a tiny bit). This is drinking very well, though I imagine it will be even better with more age. No specific notes taken. (2285 views)
Tasted by td1836 on 1/22/2024 & rated 92 points: This is coming together so well. Classic nebiollo, pure fruit, tar, ample structure. (2477 views)
Tasted by Casa HeRo on 1/5/2024 & rated 90 points: Se siste notat. Er nok på middagshøyden nå, og ser ikke den store utviklingen videre. (2531 views)
Tasted by Bonesetter on 1/3/2024 & rated 93 points: Classic Nebbiolo. This is the dictionary definition. (2597 views)
Tasted by 2caveman on 12/26/2023 & rated 88 points: This seems to be moving in the wrong direction. Tanins still very pronounced and fruit fading. Disappointing after 2 hours in carafe but softened a bit day 2 (2244 views)
Tasted by MindMuse on 12/24/2023 & rated 89 points: Solid, but did not pay any dividends for parking it in cellar a decade. You'll certainly want to have with food. (2196 views)
Tasted by chefdilletante on 12/10/2023: Nose isn’t very expressive. Palate is classic sour cherry and tar, though it doesn’t extend much in complexity. It has great acid and freshness, and is beautifully food-friendly. With some lingering hard tannins, you’ll want to serve with a good protein. (2388 views)
Tasted by Bob H on 11/30/2023: From magnum, and this is drinking great. Delicious sour cherry fruit on the palate, nice acidity, good persistence. I'm enjoying this. (2594 views)
Tasted by pinoteer on 11/5/2023 & rated 92 points: Decanted for an hour. Everything you'd expect from an aged Barbaresco. Raspberries, cherries, roses, and tar. Very silky, with a nice finish. Great QPR. (2630 views)
Tasted by bobadopolis on 10/27/2023 & rated 93 points: 30 minutes in the decanter, then spectacular (2451 views)
Tasted by Neecies on 10/22/2023: WT's wine, which had been open three days. Pleasant, but not memorable. (2583 views)
Tasted by WST on 10/13/2023: A Charity event plus two days of birthday celebration; a memorable three day weekend.; 10/13/2023-10/15/2023 (Samish Hill, Bellingham, WA): Restrained red fruit, still youthful and tannic. We opened this to compare and contrast with the 64 year old Barolo. It was best on day three. However, I was expecting a worthier showing of a vintage where all of the reserve crus went into the normale. (2790 views)
Tasted by mikelikewine on 9/27/2023 & rated 92 points: My first try from this producer. This is so much better than the 89.9 score implies. In a really good spot after a 2 hour decant. The nose is amazing, sour cherry, strawberry, lots of black tea. Palate is more of the same with just enough tannic grip. Really delicious wine. Not sure it quite warrants a 93 score but it could get there with a bit more time. (2581 views)
Tasted by Motz on 9/12/2023 & rated 94 points: Did not give this the respect that it deserves...and still it showed beautifully and powerfully.

Reticent bouquet upon opening, it features all the finest elements of high quality Barbaresco once it breathes for an hour+.

Striking, bracing structure from the outset, which was not the case until the last year or two. This tannic monster bears its teeth right about when the bouquet opens...on a level that I once saw described as soul destroying.

Why the house chose to declassify this and the '12 will remain a mystery...if not for New-World-palate-oriented (How is that for a compound word?) marketing.

This bottle needed a decade to loosen its structural grit and grip. Likely to hold form through 2040. Crazy QPR! (3260 views)
Tasted by Robert Pavlovich on 9/3/2023: The nose is rather shy. Palate is getting nearer to maturity, quite ripe as I noticed some prune notes with the rose accents and darker red fruit. The structure is at least halfway resolved, though still with a little sizzle left on the tannins. It showed as a nice dinner wine in casual company, a touch below expectations but other collectors seem happy with this lately, so there’s some bottle variation to be expected. There’s lots of sediment so a decant is recommended. (2675 views)
Tasted by Bob H on 8/7/2023: How about that - wine kismet ;^)

I just looked at my previous TNs and the last time I had this was almost a year to the day, and on that day I also chose to pair this with the 2004.

Today, though, I would have a different opinion of the two wines. The 2010 seems to be hitting its stride, with a heady mixture of red & black fruit on the nose, and this really spreads out on the palate. I am nibbling on some parmigiana reggiano as I type this and I have a smile on my face. (3032 views)
Tasted by Buick455 on 8/3/2023 & rated 91 points: PnP. Drank over 2 days. Second day the best. Color is dark brick red. Lots of fruit, red berries, cherries, spice, tannins. Medium to Long finish. (2639 views)
Tasted by JonathanP on 6/11/2023 & rated 92 points: A complete package that's just a pleasure to swirl, stick your nose in, and take a deep breath. Doing so floods you with wonderful flavours of wild strawberry, cherries, dried rose, anise, leather and some musky-earthy notes. There is excellent acidity and focus on the palate and while there's a wall of finely powdered tannins, they are moderately supple and well integrated. Evolved slowly over the 30+ hours I had it open, but it didn't really move that much. This vintage contains all the Produttori Riservas and clearly has a long life ahead of it. (3319 views)

Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco

Producer
Prior to 1894, Nebbiolo grapes were sold to make Barolo wine or simply labeled ”Nebbiolo di Barbaresco”. But in 1894, Domizio Cavazza, headmaster of the Royal Enological School of Alba and a Barbaresco resident, created the first cooperative, the ”Cantine Sociali”, by gathering together nine Barbaresco vineyard owners to make wine in the local castle that he owned. Cavazza understood that there were differences between Nebbiolo grapes grown in the Barolo district versus the same grapes grown in the Barbaresco district and, for the first time, recognized it on the wine label. The ”Cantine Sociali” was forced to close in the 1920’S because of fascist economic rules. In 1958, the priest of the village of Barbaresco, recognizing that the only way the small properties could survive was by joining their efforts, gathered together nineteen small growers and founded the Produttori del Barbaresco. The first three vintages were made in the church basement, and then in the winery built across the square from where the Produttori is still located. United once again, the small growers continued the work started by Domizio Cavazza, producing only Barbaresco wine and enhancing both the reputation of the wine and the village. The proud past of Barbaresco and the dedication of its creators have made the Produttori one of the greatest producers in a great wine-producing area; it... ”continues to set some of the highest standards of wine making for any cooperative in the world”. (Robert M. Parker, Jr.; The Wine Advocate, 2-28-90). The Produttori del Barbaresco, founded in 1958, now has 56 members and 100 hectares (250 acres) of Nebbiolo vineyards in the Barbaresco appellation, which amounts to almost 1/6 of the vineyards of the area. Each family is in full control of its land, growing Nebbiolo grapes with centuries old skill and dedication. The winery produces a Barbaresco D.O.C.G., a blend of Nebbiolo grapes harvested from different vineyards, and a simpler Nebbiolo Langhe suited for earlier consumption. In great vintages, nine single-vineyard Barbarescos are produced from nine classic premium sites within the Barbaresco village boundaries: Asili, Rabaja, Pora, Montestefano, Ovello, Paje, Montefico, Moccagatta and Rio Sordo. These are the geographical names of sites where Nebbiolo grapes have always been cultivated. The names of the single-vineyards, the total number of bottles produced, and the name of the owners of the vineyards are marked on the labels. The Produttori del Barbaresco, which vinifies only Nebbiolo grapes, produces around 420,000 bottles (35,000 cases) per year. In a good vintage they are divided among Barbaresco (40%), single vineyard Barbarescos (40%) and Nebbiolo Langhe (20%). Produttori del Barbaresco s.a.c.

Nebbiolo

Nebbiolo is a red grape indigenous to the Piedmont region of Italy in the Northwest. The grape can also be found in other parts of the world, though they are not as respected.

Nebbiolo is often considered the "king of red wines," as it is the grape of the famed wines of Barolo DOCG, Barbaresco DOCG, and Roero DOCG. It is known for high tannins and acidity, but with a distinct finesse. When grown on clay, Nebbiolo can be very powerful, tannic, and require long aging periods to reach its full potential. When grown on sand, the grape exhibits a more approachable body with more elegant fruit and less tannins, but still has high aging potential.

"Nebbiolo" is named for the Italian word, "nebbia", which means "fog", in Italian and rightfully so since there is generally a lot of fog in the foothills of Piedmont during harvest.

Nebbiolo is a late-ripening variety that does best in a continental climate that boasts moderate summers and long autumns. In Piedmont, Nebbiolo is normally harvested in October.
