Community Tasting Notes (average 91.4 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 82 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by HandmadeHomemade on 11/21/2021: Booze is definitely perceptible to the point where I think it is winning over the nose and back of the palate. Garnet in color with a pitch core. Aromas of eucalyptus, mint, black cherry, and sort of a cedary potpourri. In the mouth, the wine if full body, full of fuzzy tannin that heighten with flavors of dried dark fruits, black cherry, oak, and tons of warming spice on the finish. Med + tannin, med-low acid, very mature and ready to drink.

If it weren't for the perceptible alcohol, this would have been stellar. (1034 views)
Tasted by PSUSteve on 10/7/2020 & rated 92 points: Decanted for 30 minutes and drank over two hours. In a really nice place. (1266 views)
Tasted by HandmadeHomemade on 4/20/2020: Pours an oily dark garnet into the glass, nice bricking on the edges, viscous looking. Closed down aromas of prune, alcohol, and oak initially. Opening up after an hour in the glass (no decant), the wine is much more expressive. Aromas of spent coffee, black cherry, mint/eucalyptus, vanilla, and oak- pretty dense and soft- a little boozy on the finish. Mouth is soft and viscous, silty tannin, lower fruit acid. some stewed fruit, black fruits, and similar taste to the nose. Massive body, and a bit of booze on the finish, again. I'd say it's time for the guys to get up and go- drink up. (1407 views)
Tasted by mgstull on 2/17/2020 & rated 92 points: Cork disintegrated. Strained into a decanter. Right in its prime. Plum, cassis, saddle leather, and a bit of cigar box. Elegant. (1694 views)
Tasted by PSUSteve on 12/6/2019 & rated 92 points: Cork broke again. This bottle had more black fruit but still dominated by tertiary characteristics. It also held up well over 2+ hours. (1466 views)
Tasted by PSUSteve on 9/7/2019 & rated 91 points: Cork started to disintegrate so I needed the CorkPop to get it out. Old world Cab that faded with extended time in the glass. Drink up. (1201 views)
Tasted by Lahontan on 2/3/2018 & rated 90 points: This is my second bottle. What stands out is the mouth feel: velvety, almost viscous, a fair amount of what the French would call glycérine. It has a faint perfume of fruits in the background but nothing too loud. Overall it is elegant but slightly muted. Let's call it understated elegance. (2364 views)
Tasted by IAmVintage on 10/2/2017 & rated 93 points: Don't typically like posting a score without notes, but I just have to honor the wine. No details other than drinking beautifully, fully integrated: tannins, black fruit flavors, depth of structure. Yummy cab was the unanimous consensus. (2145 views)
Tasted by FlyPig on 3/4/2017 & rated 92 points: Leather, cardamom, dark red berries, cocoa, wet earth. Sharp, thick feel, nice finish. Really enjoyable, drinking beautifully. Might have thought it was a well aged brunello if blind. Last one, wish I had more! (2557 views)
Tasted by FlyPig on 11/20/2016 & rated 92 points: Really acidic, jagged on opening, thought this might be done. Day 2, beautiful, lush red fruit, completely integrated. (2745 views)
Tasted by ikkaariainen on 9/10/2016 & rated 95 points: One of the absolute best CA cabs we have recently had. An absolutely outstanding and very mature small producer Napa valley Diamond Mtn district cab that is drinking great and still has at least another couple of years to go with proper cellaring but would recommend starting to drink up any . We had high hopes for this wine and they were well exceeded. Expensive but given how really good this is it is actually a reasonable QPR. Splash decanted briefly and would recommend a short decant of 30 - 60 minutes. A beautiful wine, dark purple with bricking, very well balanced, well integrated, soft but still present tannins, medium bodied, excellent mouth feel and a surprisingly longish aftertaste. Soft floral nose of blueberry, dark cherry, smoke and cigar box with a beautiful well integrated flavor profile of initially soft oak, blueberry and cassis with earth, leather and tar emerging on the late palate. Highly recommend this wine if you can find it with the caveat that this wine needs to be drunk up in the next couple of years...paired utterly superbly with medium rare roasted rack of lamb...this wine goes to show that all good cabernet wines ultimately evolve / age towards a classic bdx profile.  Tasted by Wineaux67 on 8/12/2016 & rated 92 points: Beginning to get the brickish look of an aged wine. Wonderful nose with dark fruits, tar, licorice, cigar.
Nice flavor. Medium body. A little disappointing finish that is a bit bitter. (2292 views)
Tasted by FlyPig on 7/24/2016 & rated 92 points: Drinking so well. (1930 views)
Tasted by HandmadeHomemade on 6/27/2016 & rated 92 points: A little boozy on pop and pour, but a 2 hour decant soften the opening and the wine began to show black cherry and vanilla notes. There's a bit of age showing with some bricking around the edges. The wine came off a little one dimensional in the nose, but was backed up in the mouth by a full bodied, well integrated wine with flavors of black plum skins, black currant, sweet tobacco and vanilla. A really nice wine that I think is ready to drink now. (1518 views)
Tasted by FlyPig on 5/6/2016 & rated 92 points: Drinking beautifully. Smooth but not soft, balanced wine with a beautiful Cali cab dark red fruit profile. Didn't get any sense this wine was at the end of its rope. (1557 views)
Tasted by SumCellar on 12/31/2015 & rated 93 points: 13 years in, this wine is still showing well. The tannins have moderated, but the fruit is still strong. This California Senior is a winner. (1522 views)
Tasted by mouton45 on 1/1/2015 & rated 92 points: A wonderfully complex Diamond Mountain cabernet. First of all, I don't find this is past its prime; in fact, I think it will continue to improve for another couple years. Excellent balance and richness. Soft, lush tannins but they are still there 12 years after vintage. Had it the first night with rack of lamb and the second night with frilled chicken fajitas. Paired nicely with both. Wish I had bought more of the 2002, especially for the bargain price of $28. Oh well.... (2128 views)
Tasted by bigdomer on 11/21/2014 & rated 85 points: Past prime...crumbled cork. Drink now or prepare to dump. (2315 views)
Tasted by Shook on 10/3/2014 & rated 85 points: Stellar! All I have read said this is past its prime, but I just bought a case. If this is past its prime I cannot imagine what its prime was. So complex and layered. I ordered a case for my restaurant as well. Last of it in NC. (2234 views)
Tasted by jen&pat on 1/18/2014 & rated 92 points: Oh boy that was a really good cab. I'm glad we waited to enjoy this one. Very smooth but plenty of fruit and a great bold flavor. Peter does it again. I'm just sorry that was our last 2002. (3104 views)
Tasted by merlot78 on 12/11/2013 & rated 90 points: Very astringent at first but after about an hour after decanting, this wine really showed its stuff.
The wine looks Crimson colored. The legs are Medium. It smells like Black currant (cassis), Nutmeg, and Vanilla. It tastes like Black currant (cassis), Plum, Hint of Oak, Dust, and Vanilla. The body is Medium/Full. The wine has Smooth texture. The wine finishes Long. This wine was a great example of mountain cabernets. (2529 views)
Tasted by capacious on 12/11/2013 & rated 91 points: Still drinking well but fully mature. Wouldn't hold on to this. (2283 views)
Tasted by jen&pat on 11/17/2013 & rated 92 points: Excellent and even better after about 1.5 hours of decanting (2040 views)
Tasted by jen&pat on 11/3/2013 & rated 92 points: Outstanding! Really enjoyed this full flavored Cab with an Octoberfest Brat meal. Diamond Mountain continues to impress. (1956 views)
Tasted by Shoomon on 10/13/2013 & rated 74 points: Cork leach and crumbled. Oily feel with light fruit. Poor showing but maybe just a poor bottle. (1492 views)

Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is probably the most famous red wine grape variety on Earth. It is rivaled in this regard only by its Bordeaux stablemate Merlot, and its opposite number in Burgundy, Pinot Noir. From its origins in Bordeaux, Cabernet has successfully spread to almost every winegrowing country in the world. It is now the key grape variety in many first-rate New World wine regions, most notably Napa Valley, Coonawarra and Maipo Valley. Wherever they come from, Cabernet Sauvignon wines always seem to demonstrate a handful of common character traits: deep color, good tannin structure, moderate acidity and aromas of blackcurrant, tomato leaf, dark spices and cedarwood.

Used as frequently in blends as in varietal wines, Cabernet Sauvignon has a large number of common blending partners. Apart from the obvious Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the most prevalent of these are Malbec, Petit Verdot and Carmenere (the ingredients of a classic Bordeaux Blend), Shiraz (in Australia's favorite blend) and in Spain and South America, a Cabernet – Tempranillo blend is now commonplace. Even the bold Tannat-based wines of Madiran are now generally softened with Cabernet Sauvignon

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
