Community Tasting Notes (average 92.4 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 82 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by natap on 1/27/2024 & rated 92 points: Auge: Klares, intensives strohgelb

Nase: Sauber. Mittlere Aromen von reife Birne, Zitrone, Vanille, Melone, Nuss, Quitte. Voll gereift.

Tasted by The_Cat on 12/1/2023 & rated 92 points: Pale golden. Still fruit driven elderberry honey melon and pronounced roasted oak and vanilla. Full bodied with well balanced acidity and excellent length (939 views)
Tasted by Irish_Wine on 10/7/2023 & rated 92 points: Gold in the glass. Slightly restrained nose but layered and complex. Spiced baked apple, honey biscuits, hazelnut and grilled pineapple. Full bodied. Fresh acidity. Long, savoury, nutty finish. Based on this sample, no reason to wait, in a great place to drink. Less expressive than other Chevalier blanc I've had but personally more enjoyable due to the level of development and nuance.

WSET Notes:

Medium gold.

Medium plus intensity on the nose with lemon, peach, pineapple, baked apple, biscuit, cinammon, hazlenut, caramel, beeswax and honey. Fully developed.

Pronounced and dry on the palate. Full body, high acidity, high alcohol, long finish.

Can drink now but has potential for aging. (1092 views)
Tasted by sjfunkenhauser on 10/3/2023 & rated 92 points: Medium gold colour.

Medium (+) intensity aromas of bruised apple, bruised peach, grilled pineapple, cinnamon, nutmeg, baked apple, fresh lemon, lemon tart, hay, grilled hazelnuts.

Pronounced palate.

Medium (+) body, high acidity, long finish. (1097 views)
Tasted by djhammond on 8/21/2023 & rated 96 points: Third time of tasting, this has delivered again, and is a real class act, and exceptional value for money. Taste profile is as previous note. It does benefit from decanting, and ideally with 2 or 3 hours of aeration. (1371 views)
Tasted by fussyeater on 6/30/2023: Similar nose to the 07 although there are some green notes and a suggestion of yellow fruit although it is quite muted. Yellow fruit on the palate, it seems a bit more spiky. It's musty with a hint of petroleum. Seems sharper and more acidic and less inviting. Doesn't have the pronounced oak of the 07. Butterscotch on the finish. Settles after some time in the glass. Clearly decent but not my favourite. (741 views)
Tasted by chatters on 4/14/2023: Coravin fun - Domaine de Chevalier (My place, Kent Street): From Coravin. Medium plus intensity aromas of gooseberry with a bit of cats pee and herbaceous underpin, there is a slightly meaty quality here as well as a touch of cedar, quite bold. And equally bold on the palate, juicy, fleshy, woody tannic grip is talc textured. plenty of gooseberry here as well as some sweet spice, slight cream. Long. Yum. (1535 views)
Tasted by signotim on 3/25/2023 & rated 92 points: A bit shy on the nose with honey, floral and citrus notes. Medium weight, sensuous, fresh citrus and hint of melon. Long. Better on night 2 (1223 views)
Tasted by Paul D on 3/22/2023 & rated 91 points: At Noize, with FC and AW. Nose shows grapefruit, grassy notes, medium bodied, lovely creamy weight, fresh acids, quite long. Drink now. (1192 views)
Tasted by Montesquieu on 2/19/2023 & rated 94 points: Drinking great right now. Round lanolin mouthfeel. Soft complex flavors of pear, guava, honeysuckle. Someone noted pistachio, which I agree with. Oak/wood still present, which turned off one lover of crisp SB, but not me. Lovely with sushi tonight. (1453 views)
(2010 views)
Tasted by timothynbond on 8/10/2022 & rated 86 points: Translucent straw. Aromas of pear juice, fresh forest, and brioche. Medium body with medium-plus acid. Rich round, with flavors of lemon bar and wood, especially on the finish. This felt like it was holding back, and perhaps a decant would have helped. (1641 views)
Tasted by djhammond on 7/18/2022 & rated 96 points: I had to revisit this after tasting it for first time 3 months ago to check if it was as good as I had thought it was or was I seduced by the 98 point rave review given by James Suckling. It transcends grape varietals and it really could go nose to nose with a prestige Burgundy. That said, the Sauvignon is apparent with pineapple and mango notes on the nose and palate. End palate and finish, close your eyes and you could swear you were drinking a Grand Cru Burgundy. This is still retailing at under £70 sterling all taxes included, and really is a no brainer. At this stage it benefits from 2 or 3 hours in a decanter. (2117 views)

Tasted by djhammond on 4/18/2022 & rated 96 points: With white wine over the years I've become more of a Burgundy man, but this is something very special. It transcends grape varietals, and goes head to head with top notch Burgundys. The nose is deep with pineapple and mango, and the palate is multi-layered and complex. The finish is out of this world with perfect balance and acidity, and an delicate amount of citrus ensuring a residual freshness. I decanted this for 3 hours and it paid dividends, and it continued to develop in the glass, mellowing the fruit and honeyed notes taking it to a different level. 96+ (2166 views)
Tasted by edjBoca on 3/13/2022 & rated 95 points: This opens after 2-3 hours. Light aromas, great balance, complexity as it opened up. Great finish. So satisfying right now.... (1611 views)
Tasted by winot on 3/10/2022 & rated 92 points: Medium yellow gold, rich lanolin/herbal nose, nice palate, still fresh, with lots of time left, but drinking perfectly, smooth and balanced, very nice. (1385 views)
Tasted by ElGreco on 3/5/2022 & rated 97 points: An absolute monster right now. Drinking perfectly. The bouquet is a gorgeous medley of lime, guava, florals, and herbs. The palate is where things really take off though. Key lime pie, caramel, honey, creme brûlée, hazelnuts, and pistachio are having a party. Silky and luxurious mouthfeel. The finish is incredibly long with an interesting flinty-caramel nuance. No heat whatsoever, and despite the aged notes there is so much wonderful acid. The acid gives the whole wine a graceful balance. White Bordeaux at its best. (1577 views)
Tasted by chatters on 2/24/2022: Coravin fun - Domaine de Chevalier; 2/23/2022-3/6/2022 (My place, Kent Street): From Coravin. Fresh herbs, meaty underpin, with time an almost tomato leaf note, toast. Acidity is a little sour and there is a touch of bitterness here. It's quite green. Not as nice as I remember. Meh. (1835 views)
 Tasted by levicn on 1/30/2022 & rated 92 points: (1796 views)
Tasted by marc.fyon@skynet.be on 12/5/2021 & rated 90 points: Seems to be at peak already. I quite doubt it will remain drinkable until 2040. (1628 views)
Tasted by Hanibal on 9/28/2021 & rated 92 points: This is in a good drinking zone. Nose on grapefruit, honey and some tropical fruit. On the palate the wine coats the mouth with a waxy/honey feel but remains very dry. Nice acidity and good length. (2568 views)
Tasted by NickA on 9/25/2021 & rated 90 points: Obviously well-made, but had an overwhelming Sauvignon (TM) character to it. A bit of air and warmth brought out a subtext of complexity, with a little nuttiness to the nose, but drinking this now was not hugely rewarding. Strange, as the '09 and the '10 were a lot more fun at 10 years' old. (1874 views)
Tasted by Derek Darth Taster on 7/24/2021 & rated 93 points: Sat wine swap sharing. Drank in Gabriel Standart.
Appearance is clear, pale intensity, lemon colour. Legs.
Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of green guava, goosberries, greengages, citrus lime, bit of oak barrel integration. Chrysanthemukm + lees with more air. Developed.
On the palate, dry, very high acidity, medium alcohol, medium body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of salty minerality, hot gravel, integrated cream oak, sweet spices, grapefruit, green guava, gooseberries, citrus lime, mealy lees. Textured feel yet sharp acidic long finish.
Very good quality. Excellence of top notch White Bordeaux. Probably at peak already. (2413 views)
Tasted by MattTM on 4/20/2021: MM Zoom Tasting (Vancouver, BC): Drank next to the 2010 Domaine de Chevalier Blanc. Quite green and grassy...tighter and more focused yet fairly simple compared to the wine tasted along side. Plenty of acidity however stylistically I much preferred the 2010. (2459 views)

Bordeaux Wine Guide

Vins Bordeaux (Conseil Interprofessionnel du Vin de Bordeaux)

History of Bordeaux

History of 1855 Bordeaux Classification

"2009 is all about ripeness, with wines impressively packed with ripe fruit and high alcohol levels. They are showy, in-your-face, and full of pleasure. The 2010s have the fruit and alcohol levels of the 2009s, but with a compelling freshness on the finish that balances the fruit and provides a perfect sense of structure." - Ben Nelson

"2016 is a landmark vintage in certain spots of Bordeaux and it should be remembered as one of the most inspired campaigns of the last 40-50+ years." -Jon Rimmerman
"The quality of red Bordeaux in 2016 was universally lauded – although the response to the en primeur campaign was muted. Quantity was high too, with the equivalent of 770 million bottles of wine produced. An exceptionally dry summer with cool nights eventually, thanks to mid September rain, resulted in small, thick-skinned, ripe grapes, and the wines are marked by high tannin and acidity, with superb aromatic fragrance." - Jancis Robinson

"2017 was complicated, but there are some excellent wines. Expect plenty of freshness and drinkability from wines that will offer excellent value, and others that will rival 2016 in terms of ripeness and ageability. But they are likely to be the exception not the rule, making careful selection key." - Jane Anson

"In the past, a vintage such as 2022 may have been overripe, raisined and low in acidity but 2022 had a sneaky little reservoir in its back pocket - a near perfect marriage of cool/cold/rain the previous winter and the previous vintage that literally soaked the soils (a key to why 2022 is not 2003...or 1893)." - Jon Rimmerman
