Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 89.5 pts. and median of 90 pts. in 29 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by KidC on 10/25/2020 & rated 91 points: Wet rocks, saline, citrus and juniper berries. The wine is in such a sweet spot right now. Wide open, no tartness at all. Complex, balanced and 30 second aftertaste. Blindly I would have said 1cru Chablis, but then comes the salt water feel in the end that you really only find in great mature Muscadet. 91 - 92. Only had one bottle, should have both a full crate. Tres Bon! (423 views)
Tasted by MarkLA on 7/12/2020 & rated 90 points: Lime zest, grapefruit pith, gooseberry, lemon curd, smoke, flint. Rich, with a GG-like impact, the wine is textured with brisk acidity. Razor sharp finish. This stands out from the rest of the lineup -- neither good nor bad, just different. Drink now and over the next few years. (361 views)
Tasted by cweiss on 6/24/2018: Metro Bistrot magnum dinner. The only time I've tasted the "Trois" and while I certainly liked it I didn't find it all that different from a Clos de Briords from a richer vintage. But I guess that's a good thing. Certainly good, the expected acidity and minerality, and full-flavored enough to match with scallops in a tomato-tinged sauce and skate in a saffron cream sauce. (866 views)
Tasted by rhit on 1/19/2018: Trending slightly toward the more golden, secondary side of things, but otherwise still svelte and bright. (903 views)
Tasted by jkuanl on 11/10/2015: Medium bodied, lemon, saline, minerals, fine acids. (2269 views)
Tasted by Pierre-Yves on 8/3/2015 & rated 90 points: Very nice and fresh. Lost some of the bigger fruit, bit did not gain yet the aged roundness.
It was more lemony, rock and saline. I love checking the evolution on this one. (1981 views)
Tasted by Krassens on 6/6/2015 & rated 90 points: Dry, nutty, salty minerals, gray pear on the nose, on the palate green apples, finely tuned acidity, creamy undertones. Light and bright, nice with seafood or white fish. (1700 views)
90 (1446 views)
Tasted by JohanPe on 12/29/2014 & rated 87 points: No in-depth notes. Clean fruit and high acidity, sharp expression. (978 views)
Tasted by Charlie Pendejo on 4/5/2014: For all the "round" and "plush" notes, this really didn't seem to me obese for Muscadet. Maybe it has shed some baby fat per Coremill? Struck me as exemplary of its breed: fruit secondary to intense seashell minerals and very good cut. Some leesy richness, but overall my bottle presented as very, very fresh. It's certainly worlds apart from the 01/02 Domaine du Haut Bourg Côtes de Grandlieu bottlings which spent 7 & 9 years sur lie. (1394 views)
Tasted by coremill on 3/14/2014 & rated 91 points: Light in weight, but still carrying a load of flavor, this has lost some of the baby fat. It's now much more about the oceany minerality and the leesy-ness than the rounder fruit it was showing last summer, and there's a wonderful, slightly nutty savory quality that reminds me a bit of a good parmagiano-reggiano. Finishes long and intense. Lovely wine. (1591 views)
Tasted by Billigan on 2/25/2014 & rated 89 points: A little more richness and depth to a classical Muscadet profile of lemon and sea spray and chalk (although the minerality seemed a bit subdued here), but it's not worth the markup in price. There is much better bang for the buck in the Pepiere lineup than this (still very fine) wine. (1385 views)
Tasted by Bob H on 2/2/2014: As a couple of tasters already mentioned, atypically ripe and "round" for a Muscadet. That said, very impressive. While I haven't had them side-by-side, I remember the 2005 version of this wine as also being quite different/unique. (1386 views)
Tasted by EMichels on 11/25/2013 & rated 87 points: Very green; Tight; Green (1430 views)
Tasted by WineArchitect on 9/2/2013 & rated 85 points: Beautiful clear light golden color. Sharp acidic nose as well as citrus flavors, sauvignon blanc like. The finish was flat on this wine was very disappointing to say the least. Melon de Bourgogne is not my favorite! EG #WineArchitect #Muscadet (1071 views)
Tasted by drwine2001 on 6/15/2013: A Flight of Muscadet (Dig Wines, San Francisco): Complex leesy aromatics. Creamier feel than any other wine-wood elevage? Quite deep, good acidity, fruit in the background. Not typical by any means but pretty profound for the varietal. (1385 views)
Tasted by coremill on 6/10/2013 & rated 90 points: This is a very ripe muscadet, with less lemon than is typical and more green apple and honeydew. But the ripeness gives the wine a depth and intensity and roundness to the fruit that while atypical is still quite delicious. And there's still a lash of seabreeze, and there's still plenty of acidity, and it still matches wonderfully with seafood. (1270 views)
Tasted by tooch on 4/30/2013 & rated 90 points: Mostly mineral and apple. Somewhat plush, but has good character and nice acidic cut. (1444 views)
Tasted by tooch on 3/10/2013 & rated 91 points: Aromatics of pear, minerals and sea water. Palate had some sappy fruits, beautiful acid and great length. A bit fleshier than some Muscadet, but boy is this nice. (1336 views)
Tasted by isaacjamesbaker on 2/24/2013 & rated 89 points: MuscaDay 2013 (Tom's House - Washington, DC): White flowers, margarita salt, lime and crushed rocks on the nose. Full and plush on the palate, with white peach and lemon curd, but the purity of the acid and minerals never stops. Rich, long finish. A "richer" style, but this is Muscadet, so it's all relative. (1644 views)
Tasted by manonthemoon on 2/24/2013 & rated 90 points: Nose of floral, lemon, salt, little mineral.
Palate of lemon, floral, flint. (1065 views)
Tasted by Pierre-Yves on 2/9/2013 & rated 92 points: Great ! So much material, smooth, saline, evolving through couple days, versatile. This is a winner, and given the evolution through couple days I am enclined to say that it will age beautifully. (928 views)
Tasted by liteagilis on 2/7/2013: This is really profound. Where the Clisson was hot and a bit tight last year this is more open and loose knit. Dense, salty and long. No fruit to speak of, just citrus. More salt. Lots of acid. Finish lasts forever. Brilliant. This is far better than most premier cru Chablis (1008 views)
Tasted by peternelson on 2/4/2010 & rated 88 points: Zucca: EWG: Low aromatics on this, but really tight and acidic with pure lemon juice sucking in my checks in the back end. Good mineral aspect and slight yeast element in this. (803 views)

Melon de Bourgogne

Melon de Bourgogne or Melon is a variety of white grape grown primarily in the Loire Valley region of France. It is also grown in North America. It is best known through its use in the white wine Muscadet.

In the U.S., Federal law prevents "Muscadet" from being used for American-produced wine; only the full name of the grape, or the shortened "Melon" can be used.

Muscadet de Sèvre-et-Maine

Muscadet (mus-ka-DAY) is a region in the western part of the Loire valley, near the city of Nantes. White wines from Muscadet are made from the Melon de Bourgogne grape. They tend to be light in color and body, and are intensely mineral driven. They are thought to be a perfect complement to raw oysters from the nearby coast. Muscadets are gleefully paired, though, with any fresh shellfish or other seafood.

There are a couple of appellations in Muscadet, the best of which is considered to be Muscadet de Sevre et Maine. And the best bottles from that appellation are aged sur-lie, or on the lees, the musty mix of yeasts and other post-fermentation solids. This aging provides flavor complexity that can be missing in other bottles.
