Tasted by Ridgerunner on 2/2/2024 & rated 92 points: It is really nice to see how these wines have stood up to some aging and that the alcohol does burn off to reveal some nice evolution. (172 views)
Tasted by klezman on 1/8/2024: Excellent stuff. Everything I like in cool climate Syrah and showing no signs of being over the hill. (314 views)
Tasted by noni15 on 4/23/2023 & rated 92 points: Way better than my previous one however, they gotta go.....reached its peak..... (440 views)
Tasted by noni15 on 12/25/2022 & rated 89 points: Past its peak unfortunately. Nail polish and tertiary aromas….3 more bottles to go…😩 (514 views)
Tasted by mdefreitas on 6/2/2022 & rated 91 points: It has been nine years since my last bottle. This has improved, as the searing tannins of its youth have substantially mellowed and this has become more a harmonious wine. The fruit has not faded and this remains quite spry. These appellation Syrahs seem to age very well. (839 views)
Tasted by gordoyflaca on 1/25/2022 & rated 91 points: Pretty good, agree with mkribar (858 views)
Tasted by missionpk on 1/19/2022: Really really good right now. (819 views)
Tasted by mkribar on 4/19/2021: Very perfumed nose. Violet, stemmy? Some meatiness. Definitely an umami/savouriness with some violets/dark fruits. Medium tannin still but silky—on its way to resolving. Nice acid, the wine cane across as balanced. More meaty/savoury on the palate, but rosehip, violet, and blackberries as well. Very nice, probably at peak. (966 views)
Tasted by bjamesclark on 3/20/2021 & rated 90 points: Decanted and showing light to moderate sediment.
Dark garnet. Aromas in the glass show layers of dried violets, sous bois, aged meats, old leather, grill smoke, black olive, pepper, baking spices, dried herbs, earth and fruit characteristics of black plum, slightly dried blackberry, and dried blueberry.
On the palate this wine shows a very smooth entry and textured mouthfeel that follows through with juicy acidity and slightly chewy tannins that have softened over time. Flavors follow through from the nose with a more sauvage streak; wild-dried herbs, earth, sous bois, jerky, dried violets, tobacco, leather, pepper, olive, smoke and cinnamon before revealing dried blueberry, plum and blackberry notes.
Nice evolution here. (911 views)
Tasted by tenor12bucks on 2/21/2021 flawed bottle: Cork was dry and crumbled. Wine smelled of sour milk. (943 views)
Tasted by FiggySmalls on 2/12/2021: Ridiculously beautiful nose (861 views)
Tasted by David_T on 2/22/2020: Matches my 2018 note though a bit more aged; still an unbelievable qpr though based on this bottle I’d enjoy in the short term. (1173 views)
Tasted by ucbeau on 10/27/2018: Still crazy primary, with loads of darker fruit and black pepper, a hint of oak as well. Decanted for 3 hours or so without much change. Probably needs another decade to evolve into secondary phase. Chewy tannins surround the ripe fruit and the wine has lovely balance. Seems to straddle the line between old and new world syrah. (1945 views)
Tasted by Tubulus on 9/2/2018 & rated 91 points: This has undoubtably improved in the 5 years since my last bottle. At this point it's a really nicely balanced wine, still with some dark fruit and a bright floral nose, a little bit of development, enough tannin and acidity to complement food. Sitting on the patio with a nice pork chop, it's perfect. It is not, however, a particularly interesting wine, though in fairness that's not the point of this bottling. It's syrah, sure, but it doesn't have much of the meatiness and funk that I love in syrah (partially a function of it being california not rhone, though the other bedrock syrahs have more distinctive notes), and it doesn't have the somewhat slippery texture I associate with Bedrock. It's an interesting question then, if you do not have a huge cellar at home, if it's worth the storage fees to age something like this. I think it is, if only by a bit, as it certainly compares favorably in current drinking pleasure to a good recent-vintage crozes, to name something of a similar net price. (1633 views)
Tasted by prasm on 6/8/2018 & rated 91 points: My last of 4 bottles, still going strong. Nose: Medium expressiveness, boysenberry, raspberry, smoke, sweet chewing tobacco, and saddle leather. Palate: spicy dark red fruit attack, good acidic balance, cherry and sweet tobacco dominate the back-end. Finish: Lengthy 45-60 second finish dominated by spicy dark red fruit, tobacco, and leather. This is probably peaking at the moment, definitely in its prime drinking window. (1901 views)
Tasted by bbcc66 on 5/25/2018 & rated 88 points: Decanted 1/2 hr. Relatively light bodied. After the first glass, it evolved into nice dark fruit tastes. Maybe should have decanted for an hour or so. (1842 views)
Tasted by David_T on 2/1/2018 & rated 91 points: My last bottle was clearly just shut down; this one is singing with raspberry, black cherry, herbs/mint, licorice, bbq sauce and black pepper. The palate is meaty/bbq up front then with fruit that matches the nose on the midpalate and an herbal/pepper finish. Integrated medium acid/tannins. Really drinking well right now, amazing qpr. (2116 views)
Tasted by PSUSteve on 10/25/2017 & rated 92 points: My last bottle of 16. What a QPR! On PnP, this is the same as last moth but maybe even a touch deeper in all aspects. Did not hold up under VinVac on night two. Drink up. (1871 views)
Tasted by packinmn on 10/25/2017 & rated 91 points: Great wine that pairs easily with a variety of foods. Has aged nicely but seems to be in a great place to drink now. (1782 views)
Tasted by PSUSteve on 9/19/2017 & rated 91 points: Huge red fruit and spice nose on PnP. Palate was dark fruit with spice, pepper and a hint of coffee on the finish. I continue to believe it is time to drink up. (1534 views)
Tasted by Ridgerunner on 8/20/2017 & rated 91 points: Just opening up (594 views)
Tasted by PSUSteve on 6/16/2017 & rated 91 points: PnP. This started out with red fruit and evolved into dark fruit, spice and coffee. My gut says it is time to finish these in the next year. (1837 views)
Tasted by prasm on 6/11/2017 & rated 90 points: Consumed over 2 days (vacuvined), note from day 2. Nose: Medium expressiveness, black berry, blueberry, and black raspberry with hints of leather and dark flowers - violets. Palate: Medium-full bodied, red and black fruit attack, good balance and mouth-feel, fruit flavors persist thru the back-end where earth and minerals join in and persist through a medium-plus length finish. It's been a couple years since my last visit with this wine and it appears to be in it's prime drinking window right now. (1744 views)
Tasted by bound4er on 5/10/2017 & rated 91 points: This has matured nicely and seems to be entering its peak drinking window. Meat, tar, hint of flowers and dark cherry on the nose. Palate isn't as expressive as the nose - bright, slightly sour cherry, some meatiness and pepper framed by nice acidity on the finish. This wine straddles a fine line between New World and N. Rhone syrah. Well done. (1694 views)
Tasted by Sijan on 2/4/2017 & rated 91 points: A really classy wine that is punching well above its's $20 price point with an impressive perfumey nose that speaks to the pedigree of the high-end vineyards that were declassified (due to terrible weather in 2011) to make this wine. Very Northern Rhone in style, but with lots of good California fruit (salvaged from a bad growing season). This is a lovely, well-balanced wine with some dark berry & plum notes, cedar, peppery smoked game, and garrigue.

Drinking well now, but recommend drinking sooner rather than later as this is likely at or past its peak.

This was a highlight of a comparative tasting of 7 Syrahs/Shirazes from around the world (N. Rhone, Sonoma, Chile, Australia, Italy, Idaho's Snake River Valley AVA) in the $15-25 price range. Other producers in the tasting included 2009 Domaine des Miquettes St. Joseph, 2014 Montes Alpha Colchagua Valley Syrah, 2006 Lengs & Cooter The Victor, 2013 Cinder Syrah, 2014 Coiled Sidewinder. 2011 Bedrock Wine Co. Syrah North Coast

From release mailer:

2011 North Coast Syrah: In 2011 I decided to take the painful step of declassifying both Alder Springs and Hudson T Syrah into a North Coast Syrah bottling along with Shanel Vineyard, a trace of Griffin’s Lair, and a dollop of Viognier from Steiner Ranch on Sonoma Mountain. The end result is a more complete wine, dare I say the best QPR Syrah bottling I have released, but it certainly makes for a slim margin! Alder Springs, which was harvested on Oct. 31st at 21.6 brix, adds lovely high tone perfume, while the Hudson fills out the mid palate and contributes its usual savage, animal character. Shanel was all pepper and anise. Add the mountain flowers of Steiner Vio and you have got yourself a killer wine. Though I liked the 2009, loved the aromatics on the 2010, this is the most complete introductory bottling Bedrock has released.

Syrah

Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

California

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson

North Coast

The North Coast American Viticultural Area (AVA) in California, covering more than three million acres, includes Napa, Sonoma, Mendocino and Lake counties, and portions of Marin and Solano counties. (see The Wine Institute for more information)
