Community Tasting History

Community Tasting Notes (average 91.8 pts. and median of 92 pts. in 62 notes) - hiding notes with no text

Tasted by Winiac on 6/4/2023 & rated 93 points: Beast of a wine! Dark purple, almost Malbec black. Acid plus and structured. Some secondary flavors. Still quite tight. I would revisit this wine in 5 to 7 years to let it show its stuffing. (561 views)
Tasted by hsacks on 1/14/2023 & rated 92 points: Deep red color. Aromas of black cherry, licorice, black pepper and wood spices. Medium-bodied fruit in the mouth with very good depth and length and well-integrated tannins. Very fresh and supple on the palate. While delicious now, at very beginning of its peak drinking period. (660 views)
Tasted by Winiac on 5/16/2022 & rated 91 points: Has thrown tremendous amount of sediment. Austere with acid plus.I am just curious what this bottle will taste like in 20 years. Right now is just a solid dry wine without any charm. (1037 views)
Tasted by timewithwine on 12/12/2020: We’ve just been in the New-to-Us-House for 2 weeks and still living with contractors, so a lot of things are still out of place and yet-to-be-placed and still being unpacked resulting in wine notes being a low priority. Nevertheless, when L-M is poured, I take note. We decanted this for about an hour. Otherwise, the wine would have been monolithically tight. What came through a still very young wine was a touch of black olive, plum, caramel, and black cherry. The tannins still require more integration, but the wine is nonetheless approachable now. Some sediment. 14.7% alc. With assorted blue cheeses and smoked duck with French country loaf from Reunion. 12.12.20. Recommended. (1302 views)
Tasted by pgm on 10/15/2020 & rated 93 points: Crushed blackberry, pepper, tobacco, and baking spices on the nose, with minerally character and leather added in the mouth. Outstanding bottle. On the basis of this showing I’d wager that it will last another 10 years. (1739 views)
Tasted by PSUSteve on 9/13/2020 & rated 92 points: On PnP, explosive black fruit leaps from the glass. With time in the glass, the black fruit mixes with a layer of savory meat and a coffee like finish. A lot of sediment. (1471 views)
Tasted by Maphill01 on 12/17/2019: In a great place. Nose of black olive and black cherry. Same flavors on the palate, fruit balanced with pepper and secondary notes of leather. Medium plus body, tannins. Classic style. Drink now and over the next few years. (1685 views)
Tasted by Robert Pavlovich on 9/27/2019: In a good place now, turning secondary with good freshness to its dark fruit. Savory hints, though a little more sweetness from the fruit make this a very accessible Syrah. Could be had with or without food. Good for drinking now and over the next few years at least. (1771 views)
Tasted by Diane (LI) on 2/12/2019: Very intense and nothing about it suggests California. The nose is black cherry and cloves. The palate has black cherry, black olive, black pepper. Dark, brooding, and delicious. (1632 views)
Tasted by Wineorr on 1/18/2019 & rated 93 points: I was surprised to find this LM syrah in such fine form. Lots of blackberry dominated dark fruit, pepper, clove, and touch of cigar box. The tannins are there keeping it all in check. Still has a few years to go if you have any in the cellar.
Paired very well with a peppercorn rib eye. (1485 views)
Tasted by ephorn on 12/2/2017 & rated 95 points: Fascinating wine! Old works style, very dry. Dark impenetrable purple color. Gorgeous berries in palate plus a savory streak and pepper. medium plus acidity and tannin. Plenty of fruit depth, palate penetration and length.
A classic. (1897 views)
Tasted by oldwines on 11/25/2017 & rated 92 points: I didn't take precise notes but this was very deep dark purple garnet with a powerful profile and rich ripe fruit and more than adequate acidity. Ripe black fruit like blackberry, black currant and black plum and decent minerality. Enjoyable, somewhat Hermitage-like. Will take some additional age in the cellar. (1917 views)
Tasted by spidersva on 8/2/2017 & rated 92 points: Yum diddy yum diddy yum. Lush with structure. (1961 views)
Tasted by Tarpon222 on 5/29/2017 & rated 91 points: Very enjoyable, dark, rich mouthfeel. Drank over 2 nights and it continued to improve. (2057 views)
Tasted by joet626 on 4/29/2017 & rated 86 points: Very disappointing. Thin and weak. Not much here. (1935 views)
Tasted by AllRed on 3/25/2017 & rated 93 points: 4th Saturday Group brown bagger (R&D's): Double blind. Opaque color with aromas of spice, pepper and dark fruit, developing blue fruit and brown sugar notes. On the palate, the tannins are on the firm side, but there's also plenty of fruit. Black fruit, grapey- in a good way- with pepper and brown sugar flavors. Long finish. (2154 views)
Tasted by EMark on 2/17/2017: Quite dark purple in the glass. Slightly floral nose, but, really, more dark fruit. Nice hit of tart dark fruit on entry. Not particularly big tannins as the wine passes back, but slightly bitter puckeriness is noticed. I’m a bit surprised that the tartness noticed on the tip of the tongue seems to diminish quickly as the wine passes back. (1727 views)
Tasted by mgstull on 12/6/2016 & rated 90 points: Pretty consistent with my note from 11/2015 note with a notable exception. Although I gave this 3 hours of air, the tannins were much more evident than previous bottles. (1718 views)
Tasted by MattMauldin on 1/16/2016 & rated 95 points: Dark, dense, glass-coating-black purple-ruby color. Secondary aromas of melted-iron minerality, dried violet, blood sausage, balsamic vinegar, with plum sauce and black cherry fruit- evolving and complex. Massive on the palate, yet with great tension and energy. Impactful black currant and cherry fruit notes with flowers, mineral, spice, and savory rich mid-palate depth. Big smooth tannins, finishing with intense juicy dry fruit and further minerality. Stellar, showing well, long life ahead. (2812 views)
Tasted by Chrisinroch on 12/24/2015: Drank over two nights; a lot of structure and acidity that makes this wine a bit of work right now. The nose is lovely and the dark fruit and pepper are supported by a herbal and herbaceous backup chorus. Its more potential at this point. I'm not sure about the acidity. (2200 views)
Tasted by mgstull on 11/30/2015 & rated 91 points: Dense purple black. After an hour in the decanter, offered up puckerery mulberry, black fruit, black pepper, and nice acidity. The tannins are smooth and well integrated but still quite evident. This could use 2-3 hours of air. (2421 views)
Tasted by SimonG on 9/11/2015 & rated 88 points: Keith's Blind Challenge 2015 (The Medlar, London): Blind. Very dark. Sweet and dense with a minty lift. A touch of wet soil too. A bit too much after the class that's preceded it. Probably well made but not my thing. ***? (3165 views)
Tasted by cdp1276 on 6/15/2015 & rated 93 points: Nice structure with long tannins. Paired great with ribs and has a nice smooth finish. Was #30 on Wine Spectator 2013 top 100. (2727 views)
Tasted by PT insurgent on 3/14/2015: Very jammy, ripe, modern, powerful wine.
Nose: ripe fruits, jam, compote spice, vanilla, blackberry, blueberry, clove, pepper.
Palate: high acid, high tannin, tad astringent, jammy fruits, pepper, blackberry, blueberry, spice. (2164 views)
Tasted by bugdoced on 12/28/2014 & rated 90 points: musk at first dissipated quickly

second nite more earth and fruit in the background

Lagier Meredith

Producer website

"Syrah is our flagship wine. We’ve grown it since we began in 1994. Our vineyard site, with shallow rocky soil derived from an ancient uplifted seafloor and bathed in cool marine air from the nearby San Pablo Bay, brings out the best of Syrah’s savory, spicy, and floral attributes. Our wines are balanced, complex and long-lived. They reflect the restraint imposed on the vines by our mountain setting."

Syrah

Varietal article (Wikipedia) | (Wines Northwest)

Note that some producers in the Northern Rhone distinguish between simply Syrah and "Serine", the latter described as ‘an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah’ by producer Tardieu-Laurent.

USA

American wine has been produced since the 1500s, with the first widespread production beginning in New Mexico in 1628. Today, wine production is undertaken in all fifty states, with California producing 84% of all U.S. wine. The continent of North America is home to several native species of grape, including Vitis labrusca, Vitis riparia, Vitis rotundifolia, and Vitis vulpina, but the wine-making industry is based almost entirely on the cultivation of the European Vitis vinifera, which was introduced by European settlers. With more than 1,100,000 acres (4,500 km2) under vine, the United States is the fourth-largest wine producing country in the world, after Italy, Spain, and France.

2021 vintage: "Unlike almost all other areas of the state, the Russian River Valley had higher than normal crops in 2021, which has made for a wine of greater generosity and fruit forwardness than some of its stablemates." - Morgan Twain-Peterson
